Holiday Haul Cross off your gift list in style with this curated shop crawl By FEIFEI SUN

FROM CLOTHING BOUTIQUES to home goods stores, Savannah has no shortage of shops to satisfy every person on your gift list. And in a year that saw small businesses face unprecedented challenges because of COVID-19, we’re more excited than ever to spotlight this particular local talent. As the holiday gift-giving season heats up, we’ve curated two shopping experiences — an express edition for those short on time and a longer itinerary for those with more leisure in their schedule — that highlight the best of Savannah’s local designers, shop owners and makers. THE EXPRESS EDIT

Boutiques on Bull Street

Start your afternoon at Harper Boutique (118 Bull St.), which sits on the corner of Bull and State streets. Founded by best friends Leah Riffle and Thu Tran-Litts, this whimsical and minimalist

shop offers a well-curated mix of clothing, shoes and accessories for women. Afterward, walk south on Bull Street through Wright Square to refuel on briny oysters and cocktails crafted with housemade ingredients at Husk (12 W. Oglethorpe Ave.). If time permits, keep heading south, and hit shopSCAD (340 Bull St.), where you’ll find artwork, accessories and unique goods from SCAD student artists and alumni. End your express shopping adventure at Leah and Thu’s sister store, Red Clover Boutique (224 Bull St.), named after a plant with unique bloom — “unique” is how the owners see their customers, too. From python sandals and tie-dye sweater sets to festival-style stacked bracelets, Red Clover is a wallet-friendly stop for the people on your list who aren’t afraid of bold sartorial choices. Red Clover also offers a well-edited selection of jewelry pieces, including the Keepsake necklace, which features a rope chain and locket pendant perfect for storing a small photo.

THE TAKE-YOUR-TIME ITINERARY

A Downtown Day

Start your day of downtown shopping in City Market at Spartina 449 (309 W. Julian St.), named after the cordgrass found in saltwater marshes along the Carolina coast (Spartina alterniflora) and the address of the Daufuskie Island cottage where the idea for the company was hatched. The boutique is filled with wallets, totes and other bags in a range of floral, geometric and abstract prints and designs. The resort tote, which has double-hoop handles and a crossbody strap, comes in multiple pattern options and is a versatile gift for the style lover always on the go. Among Savannah’s longest-running independent shops, J. Parker Ltd. is a must-stop for the discerning man on your gift-giving list. Here you’ll find soft cashmere and wool sweaters from Peter Millar, colorful, pattern-covered bow ties from Brackish and an extensive collection of needlepoint wallets, koozies and keychains adorned with various SEC logos — prime stocking stuffers. You can also choose your location: head to the Broughton Street store (20 W. Broughton St.), or wait until the end of the crawl to scope out its newest outpost in Plant Riverside District (300 W. River St., Bldg. A, Unit 6C.) Take a break for bites and beverages at Edgar’s Proof & Provision (15 E. Liberty St.), located inside The DeSoto Savannah, where classic dishes get a Southern spin (think Caesar salad with cornbread croutons). The drink menu offers classic cocktails, like a pisco sour or aviation, and a solid wine selection, too. For the full downtown experience, Savannah’s Downtown Design District is a must. As its name implies, the area houses several interior designfocused shops, like Circa Lighting and Gaston Crue. For gifting? Try PW Short General Store (414 Whitaker St.) and Mercer House Carriage Shop (430 Whitaker St.) for quirky finds and gourmet treats at palatable price points. For a one-of-a-kind present for the one-of-akind person on your list, don’t miss the new Plant Riverside District location of 13 Secrets Jewelry Gallery (300 W. River St., Bldg. C, Unit 4), founded by Chad Crawford. In addition to Crawford’s own line, 13 Secrets also features jewelry artists from around the world and an impressive offering of Shinola watches. But the standout collection here is the shop’s fine jewelry: From traditional diamond bands to an elegant diamond paper clip ring, 13 Secrets has plenty for shoppers ready to splurge.

Head Space Looking for peace during the pandemic? Andrea Goto embarks on a journey in search of mental health. Illustrations by ALEKSANDRA STANGLEWICZ

S A V A N N A H M A G A Z I N E . C O M / 2 0 2 0 Ho l i d ay L o o k B o o k

FROM THE PANDEMIC and politics, to the economy and the environment, I’m overwhelmed with worry. Granted, I’m lucky: I’m healthy, employed and supported. But I’m worried about those who aren’t. I’m worried about our kids, our schools and our teachers. I’m worried about our community, our country, our planet. And I bet you are, too. We know this worrying isn’t good for us. Chronic stress can affect blood pressure, increase risk of heart attack and weaken the immune system. For some, it goes beyond mere worry. They’ve found themselves thrust into profound bouts of anxiety and depression. I’ve tried to suppress my worry, to just keep on truckin’ and not to focus on the things I cannot change, but sometimes that tactic feels like it’s contributing to a growing, festering ball of repressed emotion in my gut that’s just one more 2020 tragedy away from emerging. As the holidays kick into high gear (compounding anxiety levels for many), I set out to find practical strategies for keeping all the feels — so many feels! — in check.

M I N D OV E R M AT T E R “Think of it kind of like grief,” explains psychiatrist Chad Brock of Shrink Savannah. “There was a lot of grieving going on early in the pandemic, when vacations, weddings and other events were suddenly canceled. When our external motivators were removed, we experienced this kind of dysphoria that seemed to happen overnight.” The people Brock sees handling these disappointments best are those who are open to new experiences. “They’re the ones who say, ‘OK, I can’t do the sport or activity I used to like, but I’ve taken up something new,’” he says.

Keeping perspective seems to be a theme. “Anxiety has a purpose in the short term, but big-picture wise, you miss the forest for the trees,” he explains. “You’re so focused on this thing in front of you that you can’t see anything else, and that’s a bad way to live day in and day out.” Something as simple as getting outside may be helpful, Brock says. When people experience the outdoors, “they can see that there’s life beyond this work crisis or COVID-19. I think it helps you see that this is a momentarily unpleasant experience.” Brock does acknowledge, however, that some of us have a harder time pulling ourselves out of the weeds. “Anxiety and depression can be partially learned

“Sometimes, medicine can allow patients to see what is meant by ‘stop worrying about things you can’t control.’ They finally get it. They get calmer, get some insights and maybe come off of the medication” — Chad Brock, Shrink Savannah behaviors, but they also have a physiological factor,” he says. A naturally occurring amino acid in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, appears at different levels in different individuals; studies show that people who are prone to anxiety don’t produce as much GABA, Brock says. For these people, medication might be helpful. “Sometimes, medicine can allow patients to see what is meant by ‘stop worrying about things you can’t control.’ They finally get it. They get calmer, get some insights and maybe come off of the medication,” Brock says.

INTO THE DEEP Seeking out a therapist when we can’t get out of our own way sounds like an excellent idea, but is there an option that doesn’t involve me talking about my feelings? Can I get a quick fix? Yes, says Thom Safrin, a certified hypnotist who specializes in weight loss, smoking cessation and anxiety. “I’m results-oriented,” Safrin says. “There’s a framework for treating generalized anxiety; it’s a three-session program. I’ve never seen anyone for more than five sessions. I set the expectation that I don’t want to be your therapist.” During my initial, free consultation, Safrin tells me how hypnosis works, explaining that everything we do is in patterns: our breathing, heart rate, digestive system and even our thoughts. Some patterns are good, like brushing our teeth, and some are bad, like stressing over things we can’t control. “In hypnosis, we can change perspectives and sort of hit the reset button on these patterns,” Safrin says. A couple of days later, we begin our session on Zoom (Safrin also takes in-office appointments at Hypnosis of Savannah).

During the first half of the session, Safrin shares a few techniques that engage the visual, auditory and kinesthetic system that I can use to help me stop my racing, worrisome thoughts. My favorite — and the one I continue to use daily — is the “box breathing technique.” You simply envision a two-dimensional square about the size of a Post-it Note. While tracing your finger along the perimeter, breathe in for four seconds on one side, hold your breath for four seconds on the second side, exhale for four seconds on the third side and then hold your breath again while tracing the last side. “The more we can absorb the senses into something, the more we can focus our attention into it and stop any negative or swirling thoughts,” Safrin says. “By focusing your mind, it gets quiet.”

“ The more we can absorb the senses into something, the more we can focus our attention into it and stop any negative or swirling thoughts. By focusing your mind, it gets quiet.” — Thom Safrin, certified hypnotist Never has that been truer than when we began the hypnosis. For about 30 minutes, Safrin talks me through the process of turning my thoughts inward and going deeper into my subconscious. The best way I can describe it is that you travel to this infinitely big, quiet space in your own head. It was nice in there. More peaceful than I ever imagined my mind could be. The feeling of calm lasted for hours, but the best part is that I’m able to use the techniques Safrin taught me to quiet my overactive thoughts. In effect, I can change my mind.

F I N D I N G S O LU T I O N S Licensed psychotherapist Michelle Aycock affirms what I anecdotally believe to be true: “There is definitely an uptick in the number of people experiencing situational anxiety or stress brought on by COVID-19.” But she adds that these people aren’t necessarily getting the help they need because of accessibility or finances. Aycock knows this firsthand, because she dropped from 20-plus patients a week to just three or four phone sessions. “The people I see have lost their businesses. They have no money,” she says. “I couldn’t open my business because we were under quarantine.” She also knows firsthand how profound situational depression can be. Although Aycock has been in practice for 26 years, she is not immune. When COVID-19 hit, she fell into a deep depression, sleeping around 12 hours a day while trying to homeschool her young son. “I couldn’t function, and I just stopped caring for about six weeks. I never asked for help, and for the first time in my 51 years on this earth I needed help,” she recalls. That help came in the form of a close friend who happened by, saw the state Aycock was in and offered compassion and support. Aycock’s own experience led to a silver lining of awareness and understanding. “We hate the unknown and being uncomfortable, but this is our new normal,” she says. “The sooner you accept it, the better your life will be, because only then can you find the solutions.” Throughout this journey, the common thread I discover from these perspectives and practices is that, ultimately, we must find peace for ourselves. Yes, we can be guided, but the work is ours alone, and the creative problem-solving rests on our capable shoulders. Aycock likens it to a roadblock. “There’s a way around it, and it’s not going to be the same way we’ve gone before. But there are always ways around the roadblock,” she says, “you just have to figure them out.”
