EDITOR’S LETTER
This ivory suede jacket adds a little edge to any outfit — even my wedding dress.
PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU to write everything down on your big day, because you’ll forget those little moments and forget them more quickly than you’d think. At my own wedding here in Savannah just more than two years ago, I heeded this sage advice, typing things into my Notes app as the day progressed. I was thrilled to have a contemporaneous record ... until I accidentally deleted the note mere days after my nuptials — and didn’t realize I had done so until it was too late (iPhone only hangs onto things in the Recently Deleted folder for so long). What’s a scatterbrained new bride to do? I held on to the tangible things: dried flowers from a custom bouquet, not unlike the one on page 19. Framed artwork my husband and I purchased on our magical, mountain honeymoon. And the ivory suede jacket you see here. Every time I slip it on, I feel as beautiful as I did on my wedding day, an unseasonably cold one in early March. When the weather permits, it’s also fun to
12
SOUTHERNCOASTALWEDDINGS.COM
apply that feeling to more mundane contexts. Going to the grocery store or running to Target in my wedding jacket instantly enlivens an otherwise boring trip (it also makes date nights extra special). While registry items are often purely practical and memories will last a lifetime, I’d argue it’s important to have some dedicated pieces to commemorate your own Southern coastal wedding, which is why I’ve devoted a full page to the subject on page 30. So, plan away with the inspirational pages that follow, write everything down when the time comes and treat yourselves. You deserve it — and it may just come in handy if technology fails you.

THE REHEARSAL DINNER
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the pressure of hosting a picturesque rehearsal dinner to kick off your wedding festivities. Luckily, you don’t need a packed guest list, dazzling venue or a fourcourse meal. When it comes to planning a rehearsal meal, says Danielle Voight, owner and lead designer of Design Studio South, sometimes less is more. “I would advise couples to let it be more relaxed and let the wedding be the main event,” says Voight, noting that otherwise, “it’s easy for your rehearsal dinner to add up to the same cost as your wedding.” Opt for casual, family-style fare to keep costs down without skimping on Southern style. “A lot of people go for the Savannah-themed Lowcountry boil [at the rehearsal dinner] because

they’re not going to get that at the wedding dinner,” says Brandon Mell, owner of B Local Catering. Like Mell, Sophie Longwater of Dapper Event Co. also suggests making the most of the coastal atmosphere. “Since we’re in Georgia, I love a Lowcountry boil on the marsh, wood-fired pizza in a backyard or even renting out a rooftop bar for a rehearsal dinner,” she says. A Southern selection is crowd-pleasing, but couples can add even more of an authentic touch by leaning on the local food scene. “We suggest Leopold’s Ice Cream or River Street Sweets [for dessert], for instance,” says Kim Chambless of The DeSoto Savannah. It’s a way to indulge “and have a little fun with the menu.” If you crave something more sophisticated, don’t fret. Katherine Hankey, co-owner of Current Catering, offers

AS THE ADAGE GOES, EAT, DRINK AND BE MARRIED. And while the emphasis is certainly on the married part, food and drink are undeniably important when it comes to hosting a Lowcountry wedding. In a region known for its mouthwatering, homestyle cooking, you’ll likely want to showcase coastal cuisine and hospitality at your rehearsal dinner and wedding dinner alike. But how do you create two separate yet personalized experiences that don’t leave your guests feeling déjà vu? We’re bringing you tips and tricks from the experts to help differentiate the rehearsal dinner from the wedding day feast while charming your guests, Southern style.
An inviting, casual atmosphere complete with Lowcountry flair — and fare — sets the tone for a memorable rehearsal dinner.

THE DETAILS Single-serve food items are chic — and hygienic.
KEEPING IT SAFE & STYLISH
“For the reception, serving an item the couple makes for dinner if you have visited them can be fun.” — K AT H E R I N E H A N K E Y, current catering
another method that marries modernity with a boozy, Southern pastime. “A cocktail party-style rehearsal with nods to places the couple has traveled through the lens of the season is fun,” Hankey says, “and you can be a little more forward-thinking with the food items.” THE BIG DAY
The wedding meal says a lot about a couple, whether culturally, symbolically or simply as a matter of taste. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to mesh seasonally appropriate foods and regionally inspired cuisine with a bride’s and groom’s personal palates. “For the reception, serving an item the couple makes for dinner if you have visited them can be fun,” says Hankey. “Or, the menu can hint at entrees [eaten during] the couple’s first date.” The goal, Hankey says, is bringing people together through food.
26
SOUTHERNCOASTALWEDDINGS.COM
When attempting to keep the wedding dinner fresh and fun for guests, it’s easy to stray from the theme. But Longwater believes that decor plays a crucial part in creating consistency. Got a mish-mash of a menu? A cake for every taste? Decor ties it all together. Longwater suggests incorporating your wedding colors and flowers at the wedding dinner for a cohesive look, even if the menu is diverse. There are myriad methods to distinguish your wedding dinner from your rehearsal dinner, and vice versa, Hankey says. The shift doesn’t have to be as simple as casual to formal (though that’s often a good place to start). Consider changing the service style, the number of guests or even components of the theme. “This is where having discussions with the client about their vision and playing off things like the venue and experiences can help to make lasting menus — and memories — of both events.” SCW
With the world slowly opening back up and gatherings growing with the blessing of the CDC, it’s still essential to stay COVID-safe when dealing with your wedding cuisine. Trends of the past like reusable utensils, though environmentally friendly and often chic, have taken a back seat to the ease and cleanliness of throwaway cutlery. While this is only one example of change, we’ve gathered advice from local wedding planners and caterers on trends that have faded away — and new ones that have taken the top spot for the sake of safety. Bring on the bamboo. For the most stylish single-use cutlery, Brandon Mell, owner of B Local Catering, always opts for bamboo. “It looks a little better than the clear, 6-inch hors d’oeuvre plate,” Mell says. Find a food truck. “Food trucks were just becoming popular pre-pandemic, and everyone had to have them at their wedding,” says Sophie Longwater of Dapper Event Co. Fortunately, the trend has transitioned seamlessly into postpandemic life. “They’re still such a fun way to provide food for your guests.” Visit savannahfoodtruckforce.com for local food trucks. Make it personal. Single-serve treats are safe and stylish: think cupcakes or pre-packaged heavy hors d’oeuvres. “Caterers started to offer items like charcuterie cups, which are still a hit today,” Longwater says. Add some elbow room. “We now find guests prefer fewer numbers at the tables with space to socialize,” says Kim Chambless of The DeSoto Savannah, who notes that more clients are requesting large estate tables for events. “Round tables seem to be a trend of yesteryear.”

The path to the perfect pearly whites can go beyond color correction. “We’ve helped brides and grooms achieve their dream smiles in a variety of ways with signature services ranging from six-month smiles, clear aligners, porcelain veneers and more, depending on if they want to change their smile or even the way they smile,” says Dr. Ryan Reeves of Beyond Exceptional Dentistry. Because the makeover is highly personalized, and procedure times can range from one month to a year or more, it’s best to prioritize your smile well before the big day. MICROBLADING
It’s all about the brows, baby. Implementing a tattooing technique, an esthetician uses a tool with tiny needles to etch small strokes of permanent makeup, creating the appearance of fuller, thicker and darker eyebrows. Some may find microblading uncomfortable — like a series of annoying little scratches — but not necessarily painful, and patients may experience some scabbing. The color and shape are fully customizable and last up to 18 months. Cost: starts at $650

LASH TINT AND LIFT
These paired procedures are a speedy, pain-free way to curl or straighten lashes and give them a dark, luscious look. “The treatment naturally makes your lashes appear fuller without damaging them,” says Courtney Victor, owner of Glow Medical Spa. It’s particularly ideal for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to wear mascara. “Because there’s no need to layer on mascara, when they cry happy tears, there’s no risk of color running,” Victor adds. “Nobody wants blackened tears creeping down their face on the big day!” Cost: $70

LIP BLUSHING
The kinder cousin to microblading, lip blushing uses a shader machine that penetrates just the upper layers of the skin, giving the effect of a lip stain with permanent makeup pigments. Plus, medical-grade lidocaine makes for a pleasant experience. “The meticulous process of layering customized pigments in individual pixels takes about three hours to complete,” says Kathryn Taylor Day, microblading artist at Refine Savannah. This helps correct blurred lip lines, optimizes the lip shape and is the ultimate form of low-maintenance makeup for a good three to five years. Consider artfully designed and painted nails as another important accessory on your wedding day. Today, brides are going beyond the basic French tips, opting for more memorable nail art. And since most photos of the bouquet or rings also includes the hands, nail art can be yet another playful and personalized detail. Cost: starts at $50

SKIN TIGHTENING
“For my bridal clients, I like to do more colorful takes on classic designs, like French tips that match the bridesmaids’ dresses, or even in multiple colors that reflect the color story of the wedding. As an alternative to surgery or harsh chemical peels, Exilis by BTL is an entirely contactless procedure that uses ultrasound and radiofrequency waves to stimulate collagen growth, giving skin a more youthful appearance. Beauty Countdown
Flawless skin for your big day is just months away.
P
Karen Bouchard PA-C | Aesthetic Physician Assistant, Savannah Plastic Surgery
lanning a wedding is an exciting and busy time in a woman’s life. With all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss an essential component of looking your best – taking care of your skin. Whether you are the bride or the mother of the bride, you want to look your best as the big day draws near. Let this timeline guide you through all the to-dos! 12 MONTHS Schedule an appointment with a licensed aesthetician and an aesthetic injectable provider. They will each assess your skin health and make recommendations for redness, brown spots and texture issues like acne and scars. They will guide you in proper skincare and may recommend chemical peels, lasers, microneedling, dermaplaning or hydrafacials. If you have lines at the forehead, between the brows or around your eyes, your injectable provider may recommend Botox/Dysport treatments to relax those muscles and smooth lines.
Deep lines may require several treatments. Sagging and wrinkles due to significant volume loss can be improved with fillers, which will rebalance, lift and smooth skin. Be sure to tell them you are preparing for a wedding and what your timeline is. 9 MONTHS Now is the time for procedures that require downtime or results time. Lasers can lift dark spots, improve fine lines, texture, vessels, redness, pores and build collagen over a three- to six-month period. A series of microneedling treatments will smooth and brighten skin, tighten pores and stimulate collagen. 6 MONTHS It’s time to make those final adjustments to your skincare routine. If you are considering Botox or fillers, make your appointments for treatment three to six months before the wedding.
3 MONTHS Now is the perfect time to have a light chemical peel or try a hydrafacial or dermaplane. A chemical peel will remove dull skin and brighten your face. A hydrafacial will clear congested pores, plump tissues and infuse the skin with anti-aging serums. Dermaplaning will remove dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving your skin super smooth and better able to absorb all the goodness of your skincare regime. From here forward, you will want to focus on your current skincare and no downtime procedures. 4 WEEKS Now’s the final time for Botox and filler touch-ups. 1 WEEK Have a relaxing facial or hydrafacial with dermaplaning for that amazing wedding skin glow!

The Lowcountry Lowdown Essential details for a Southern Coastal wedding, from forecasts to forms By HANNAH BUCHMAN & BETTY DARBY
S O U T HE R N C OA STAL WEDDING S covers some of the most beautiful geography in the world. Although each area of the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire bears its own distinctive mark, they all share certain signatures: stately oaks draped with romantic Spanish moss, preserved historic structures and a cultural reverence for the art of hospitality. Beaufort, South Carolina, in upper Beaufort County, is awash with romance and history, a quintessential small Southern town. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, where even the gas stations have a posh patina. This island is an ode to meticulously planned high-end residences and manicured golf courses all coming together with understated elegance. Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister — an eclectic community with an artist’s soul. Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia. Savannah’s massive historic district and tree-filled squares are top-ofmind when it comes to planning a wedding here, but Savannah-area brides are spoiled for choice — beach weddings on Tybee Island, historic venues well away from the bustle of the city and even rustic farm settings make the Hostess City a versatile site for any celebration. About an hour to the south, you’ll find Glynn County, Georgia, home of the Golden Isles — Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island, plus the mainland town of Brunswick, which offers a picturesque historic district. It’s easy to see why these islands inspired poet Sidney Lanier’s famed “Marshes of Glynn” — they offer an array of wedding venues, from elegant and exclusive villas to earthy, exquisite driftwood beaches.

COASTAL WEATHER
Rainfall: Heaviest in August (7.2 inches),
lightest in November (2.4 inches); hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but mid-August through mid-October is when locals keep a sharp eye on the weather.
Average high/low temperatures:
Spring, 75/58; Summer, 90/75; Fall, 77/62; Winter, 60/43. Bear in mind, heat and humidity are staples of three seasons and can even show up in winter.
Tides: If you want to be a beach bride, don’t forget the tide! Our area experiences dramatic 7-foot differences between high and low tides.
GETTING A MARRIAGE LICENSE Of course getting married involves paperwork and fees. We review below how to take care of the business end of getting married. At press time, COVID-19 restrictions that had been in place for more than a year were poised to lapse — but not quite yet. We’ve referenced the more restrictive versions — those that limit contact — but be aware these are likely to revert to more normal requirements. Remember to check the websites of the relevant counties as your big day approaches.
Savannah, Tybee Island and elsewhere in Chatham County: Find
the marriage license application under Probate Court at courts.chathamcountyga. gov. Email the completed application or use the court’s drop-box to return the completed application, and you will be emailed a link to set up an appointment for both parties to visit the office at 133 Montgomery St., Room 509, in downtown Savannah. Fees are $66, with discounts for those who undergo premarital education. The court currently accepts credit and debit cards, money orders or cashier’s checks, but not cash or personal checks. 912.652.7264.
Golden Isles: The Glynn County Probate Court, 701 G St. in downtown Brunswick, offers online applications and payment options at glynncounty.org. Appointments can be made by calling the License Department (912.554.7231) or by email: probatecourt@ glynncounty-ga.gov. The fee is $76.
Hilton Head Island and Bluffton:
The Beaufort County Probate Court offers mail and appointment options for marriage licenses. Fees range from $50 to $95, depending on the residency status of the applicants. Learn more at beaufortcountysc.gov or from the marriage license division, 843.255.5850. Appointment options are available at the Beaufort County Probate Court’s main office at 102 Ribaut Road in Beaufort or at its satellite office at 539 William Hilton Parkway.
BEACH WEDDINGS Beach weddings, like any public gathering, may be impacted by pandemic-inspired safety restrictions.
Tybee Island: You’ll need a $25 beach
permit from the City of Tybee facilities manager. For details and restrictions, go to the special events planning section at cityoftybee.org or contact rrosner@cityoftybee.org.
Golden Isles: St. Simons Island beaches do not require reservations or permits for weddings. For weddings on Jekyll Island beaches, you’ll need to contact the Jekyll Island Authority at 912.635.6400.
Golden Isles: To rent a historic site on Jekyll Island (e.g. the Villa Ospo, Horton House ruins) email cjoiner@jekyllisland.com or call 912.635.4168 and pay a rental fee. To reserve a pavilion, you’ll need to complete a reservation form at jekyllisland. com and email jekyllparks@jekyllisland.com.
ALCOHOL LAWS FOR PUBLIC AREAS Alcohol lcensing and permits vary by venue based on which local government has jurisdiction.
Savannah: To dispense wine or beer in
a square/park, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Alcohol Event Permit from the Revenue Department available at savannahga.gov and pay a $50 application fee.
Tybee Island: Alcohol is allowed on the beach but not in glass containers.
Golden Isles: Alcohol is allowed on the beach but not in glass containers.
Hilton Head Island: Alcohol is prohibited on all beaches.
Hilton Head Island: To perform a ceremony on the beach, you will need a permit from the Town of Hilton Head Island. The request form can be submitted online at hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
RENTING PUBLIC AREAS/HISTORIC SITES Many areas, such as the city of Savannah, temporarily suspended or restricted the rental of public areas due to pandemic precautions. The listings below apply to normal situations; use the websites provided to check the current status.
Savannah: To rent a square or park for
your wedding, you’ll need to apply for a public assembly permit. Applications must be filled out at least 90 days in advance and can be found at savannahga.gov. The permit fee for residents is $325; nonresidents pay $625 ($475 in the off-season), in addition to security fees. For more information, call 912.351.3837 or visit savannahga.gov under Parks and Squares Rental.
PET LAWS ON BEACHES
Regulations concerning dogs on beaches are among the most volatile that beach communities confront, so check the websites presented to make sure nothing has changed before you pack your pooch to the beach.
Tybee Island: No dogs allowed on the
beach at any time (or you’ll face a $290 fine plus court costs). cityoftybee.org
Golden Isles: On Jekyll Island, dogs are
allowed on Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island Beach and Great Dunes Park but must be leashed. On St. Simons Island, dogs are allowed on East Beach and Massengale Park (no leash required) but prohibited between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during June, July and August. jekyllisland.com; glynncounty.org
Hilton Head Island: Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach, but are prohibited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day. hiltonheadislandsc.gov SCW S O U T H E R N C OA S TA L W E D D I N G S 2 0 2 1 – 2 2
