THERE’S NO DENYING THE STRONG ALLURE of the Southern coast. Maybe it’s the way the light filters through the Spanish moss, the sense of mystery or the pull of the ocean’s tides. The romantic location was one reason that my husband and I chose to honeymoon in Savannah last year. The other — more definitive reason — was that pandemic-related restrictions made our original travel itinerary impossible. And yet, our backup option turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made. In fact, we loved our stay so much that we often talked of relocating from Atlanta. Then, landing my dream job in Savannah made it possible. This move wasn’t something I could have predicted when we first got engaged in 2019 or bought our first home in Atlanta in 2020. But you know what they say about best-laid plans. Couples who have gotten engaged and married recently know this all too well. In addition to pivoting my own wedding plans, I also saw several friends and family members embrace the art of going with the flow while rescheduling dates and shifting details. Through it all, I’ve learned the magic of weddings isn’t when everything goes perfectly as planned. Rather, what really counts is when a couple’s love endures and overcomes any of the surprises life inevitably introduces along the way. Now, that is worth celebrating.

EDITOR’S LETTER

In this issue, there are a dozen real weddings from the past year that — despite all odds — wholeheartedly rose to the occasion. And speaking of rising up, open-air tent design is reaching an all-time high. On page 26, find out why local event experts agree this post-pandemic trend is here to stay.

To all the newly engaged couples and their families, I hope the year ahead proves to be much smoother sailing. (All the tips packed in these pages should help, too.) And if not, well, then I hope the surprises in your future are pleasant ones and that your love only grows stronger at every turn.

Colleen Ann McNally Editor Photo by KATIE MCGEE After marrying in Atlanta in May 2021, my husband and I honeymooned in Savannah — then decided to make it our home.

26 SOUTHERNCOASTALWEDDINGS.COM THE DETAILS Tented weddings marry open-air design with elegance and fun Written by JEN MARIE WIGGINS Breathe JUST

SOUTHERN COASTAL WEDDINGS 2022–23 27Photography by MARIANNE LUCILLE PHOTOGRAPHY

BIG WEDDINGS ARE FINALLY BACK, and you can almost hear a collective sigh of relief from engaged couples everywhere. Still, even as open-air venues have become less of a priority for some, there are so many reasons to say yes to a tented Coveredwedding.venuesoffer the best of both worlds — the flexibility to create a dream enclosed space while also taking advantage of the breathtaking beauty and spectacular ambience that comes with our southern landscape. Even better, they also allow couples the freedom to plan their decor without having to compete with fixed issues like dated wallpaper or that stark colored carpet that might accompany a conventional reception hall. Instead, many couples are bringing in their own color palettes with their favorite bold florals and bright hues which are making a comeback.“Weddings are moving away from the past trend of muted ivory, white and greenery. We are seeing a lot of soft lighting paired with brightly colored florals used in fun and unique ways,” says Susan Richards, co-owner of Sincerely Yours Events.

For their September 2021 wedding held at Beaulieu and planned by Sincerely Yours Events, Meagan and Drew Jones added star chandeliers to take their tent design up a notch. To see more of this wedding, visit southerncoastalweddings.com.

Still, no matter what type of tented event you’re planning, it’s important to plan early and work with experienced vendors. The clean slate that makes the tented venue so appealing can also make it more“Youchallenging.wantyourtent to be as seamless as walking into a ballroom, and that can take extra lead time. It’s often those less glamorous considerations like renting a backup generator or insect mitigation that are just as important to planning a smooth and memorable evening for you and your guests,” says Richards.

And that creativity often starts at the tent’s entrance. As the old adage says, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and statement entrances are going big with everything from embellished arches, lanterns and fabric to twinkle lights, florals and neon signs. Couples are also bringing in the drama with hanging floral installations that move from floor to ceiling, floral wall photo backdrops and even dance floors made of blooms suspended under acrylic. Another growing trend is the upscale bar. At the reception, bars are becoming their own attraction with customization of drinks and bartenders who are more interactive with guests. Lounge areas and soft seating are also still popular and allow the ability to expand outside the tent and offer cozy seating for guests to gather outside the central party area.

28 SOUTHERNCOASTALWEDDINGS.COM

And Kendall Wayner, director of Client Relations and Marketing for Ranco Event Rentals, agrees. “Some brides don’t even want to talk about rain contingency and then bad weather comes and every one has to scramble. Planning is even more important for tented and outdoorWeddingsvenues.”are definitely back and bigger than ever. Although a tented wedding may take some additional lead time and planning, it’s a trend that’s here to stay. And why not? The end result is a celebration that’s uniquely yours and a breath of fresh air for everyone. SCW Once reserved as a last resort in the case of bad weather, tents are increasingly being incorporated into wedding design and embellished with bespoke lighting and florals.

Ask questions, then go! Experts recommend you interview at least two to three different venues and vendors. As soon as you find the “one,” don’t hesitate. Booking early is key because the current high demand isn’t predicted to go away anytime soon.

PHOTOGRAPHYCAINJOHNBYPHOTO//SPA&

Get practical. First steps should include checking ordinances and determining what permits are required. Before you set anything in stone, make sure that you’ve covered everything from fire safety and noise restrictions to electrical and sanitation issues. Most wedding planners and experienced rental companies can steer you in the right direction— which is one more reason to use highly recommended and experienced vendors. Choose the right tent. From clear to sailcloth, there are many types of tents, and various conditions such as weather, guest count and even those amazing trees that made you fall in love with your venue are all important considerations. Talk to a planner or designer in the very beginning to identify the proper size and what types of constraints there might be. Budget is generally the most critical consideration, as tented weddings are almost always more labor-intensive.

GROUND TO COVER BEFORE YOU GET HITCHED

Plan from the bottom up. Although it’s not a necessity, flooring makes a huge difference and, while costly, can be worth the investment to take your reception to the next level. Grass is your cheapest option, though fabricated options range from carpet or sisal to laminate or wood. Don’t forget to consider your dance floor and how it all works together. The next step is defining each space from bar to formal seating. Lastly, draw the eye up with a dramatic hanging installation, lighting or tall centerpieces. Height creates the illusion of a full and warm space where guests will want to linger.

Beauty at Any Age by FEIFEI SUN ALL EYES MAY BE ON THE BRIDE, but that doesn’t mean mothers of the bride don’t want to look great, too. Here, a few local experts share their favorite wedding beauty treatments and tips, from head to toe, for both the bride and her mom to turn heads on the big day.

REPEAT FOR RESULTS

“There’s no magic facial that’s going to fix everything overnight,” says Janie Futch, co-owner of Refine Savannah, a boutique medical spa. She recommends getting on a consistent skin regimen four to six months before theFutchwedding.recommends chemical peels for brides dealing with acne or hyperpigmentation, while microneedling, also known as collagen induction, is effective for a brighter, more youthful glow. Even if a months-long commitment isn’t possible, repetition is key: “You want at least two to three treatments for best results.”

Make sure to get all major treatments the week before the wedding to give skin time to calm down. The week of the event, Kaitlyn Smith of Low Country Dermatology says a hydrating mask can be a soothing way to add moisture to skin. “Cold rolling with an ice roller is also an easy way to minimize any inflammation or puffiness on the face.”

Refine Savannah refinesavannah.com

A GOOD ROUTINE STARTS AT HOME Spa treatments can do wonders for the skin and body, but a good, over-the-counter product can also go a long way, says Kim Richardson, an esthetician at Savannah Facial Plastic Surgery. “Add a mild alpha hydroxy acid, like lactic, to your routine to brighten skin,” she says.

“You would want to schedule Botox four weeks prior to the event,” she says. “This allows plenty of time for the product to settle in and perfect the look.”

GO GENTLE THE WEEK OF THE WEDDING

One treatment that Sophia Antonellis, director of marketing for Glow Medical Spa, likes for mothers of the bride is laser therapy to help reduce the appearance of sunspots and aging–particularly on overlooked areas like the hands. “It’s the small areas that people often haven’t thought of that giveaway signs of aging,” she says.

DON’T IGNORE OFTEN-OVERLOOKED AREAS

SUN-KISSED SKIN WITHOUT THE SUN

For brides who want the look of a tan without committing to (or the harmful effects of) hours in the sun, BEETTAN founder Michelle Peth recommends her self tanning lotion, a buildable formula that goes on clear and stays on without staining. “I suggest two applications the week of the wedding, starting 24 to 48 hours before the big day,” she says. “It’s also the perfect product for destination weddings, since you can apply it yourself and build up to the coverage you want.” Peth also offers spray tan treatments for mothers of the bride who prefer a one-and-done treatment.

Elsewhere, Kaitlyn Smith, an esthetician at Low Country Dermatology, suggests getting an eyebrow wax or dye: “It may sound like something minor, but not having to worry about filling in your brows can be a huge stress relief and time saver.”

Feifei Sun is a writer and editor born in China and raised in the American South — Savannah, Georgia, to be exact. She previously worked as an editor at Vanity Fair and Time magazines, and her writing has also appeared in Dwell, Slate, Real Simple and more.

A LITTLE OIL CAN BE GOOD The stylists at 40 Volume Salon suggest washing hair the night before the big day, rather than the morning of, as curls and other styles hold up better. And if you want any face-framing pieces, get a fresh haircut the week before.

Hello, Goodbye From perfecting the welcome package to sending your reception party home with an experience they won’t soon forget, local tastemakers share the top gifts for guests.

PHOTOGRAPHYSPANGLERASHLEYBYPHOTOKELLIBOYDPHOTOGRAPHYCOURTESYVISITSAVANNAH

A familiar staple found at the Forsyth Farmers’ Market or on the shelves at Fancy Parker’s Market on Drayton Street in Savannah, Palmetto Kettle Corn checks the boxes for a snack that’s both salty and sweet. To take your welcome package the extra mile, give the gift of sightseeing, such as including tickets to hop on Old Savannah Tours Swanson also recommends including an itinerary for the weekend with a custom watercolor map of the city.

Emily McCarthy & Co.’s Cocktail Candle is hand-poured in a reusable low-ball glass, making it a two-for-one souvenir. Be sure to include a handwritten note.

Think outside the box with cute totes and baskets from Asher + Rye.

Emily McCarthy & Co. can also help with custom stationery.

A tin of Byrd Cookie Company treats will travel well for guests’ return trips – if they last that long. A Southern tradition dating back to 1924, stick with the greatest hits such as the Key Lime Coolers and Georgia Peach Cookies. Savannah-based Drink Fête offers “cocktail infusions” made from fruits, herbs, seeds and even flowers to create a unique flavor profile that tastes as good as it looks. Just add your spirit of choice.

Need more inspiration? Here are a few ideas to incorporate local flavor.

Whether your guests traveled near or far, give them a warm welcome filled with Lowcountry favorites that can both be enjoyed right away or savored later. For snacks, think salty, sweet, bubbly and refreshing to cover all your bases. Anna Swanson of Swanson Signature Events says you can’t go wrong with the classics, like Georgia Peanut Commission peanuts, Savannah Bee Company honey, locally made pralines and Coca-Cola in glass bottles. For a playful twist, she recommends adding in Savannah Bananas memorabilia, monogrammed golf towels and a bottle of wine — plus a hangover kit for post-wedding recovery.

UPON ARRIVAL

Nothing says “Southern coastal” quite like an oyster shell. Allison Newton of Allison Event Design suggests gifting a local shell painted with a local map by Richmond Hill-based True South Designs for an original memento that can be repurposed as an ornament or ring dish.

Before you say goodbye, surprise your guests with a local treat to send them home with full hearts — and bellies. “I tend to lean more towards an experience they won’t forget or something practical they will keep and not throw away,” says Swanson.Likewise, Dapper Event Co. owner Sophie Longwater always suggests couples offer a snack if the party will last late, such as Chick-fil-A served on silver platters to guests on the dance floor. “I have never heard of a guest turning their noses up to a yummy snack before the night ends.”

For a late fall or winter wedding, consider a warm dessert instead. Swanson says Savannah Event Catering is widely known for its wow-worthy flaming donuts.

STYLISH SEND-OFF

For coffee lovers, consider having an espresso bar at your reception. Better yet, choose a favorite bean blend from a local roaster — such as The Coffee Fox Roasting Co. or PERC Coffee — and offer guests bags to take to go.

FOXCOFFEETHECOURTESY

CigarXperiences brings custom hand-rolled cigars to your celebration for an elevated experience that engages all the senses.

After your dance floor heats up, keep guests cool with Savannah Square Pops. These handcrafted ice popsicles are available in refreshing flavors such as Tybee Breeze and Savannah Banana Puddin’ — not to mention the colorful cart makes for a fun photo opp. For a more classic Savannah experience, Leopold’s Ice Cream cart is always a crowd-pleaser. “Especially in the summertime,” adds Longwater.

//EVENTSSIGNATURESWANSONCOURTESY PHOTOGRAPHYCATHEYASHLYNBYPHOTO

Petitely packaged to fit in a purse or a jacket pocket, a small sleeve of Le Macaron French Pastries Savannah — in colors that match your wedding’s palette — makes for a sweet and memorable takeaway. Another option is to check with your caterer or reception venue for add-ons. For example, Longwater says The Alida serves “the most delicious chicken-and-waffles bar you’ll ever eat.”

Courtney wanted the celebration to evoke the feeling of a romantic and elegant garden. Pulling inspiration from her and her mother’s collection of Chinoiserie porcelain, the classic blue-and-white motif carried throughout the wedding details, from the florals to the tablecloths to the keepsake monogrammed napkins. The pièce de résistance, however, was the custom art piece behind the main bar, which elevated the design to something akin to a high-end hotel. To complete the vision, bartenders donned white dinner jackets, while a vase overflowing with white orchids — another personal favorite of the bride and her mother — brought a piece of home to the luxe Lowcountry fête.

When it was time to scout wedding venues, the New Yorkers decided to travel further afield. Courtney always dreamed of getting married in the South, and as soon as she and Mitch pulled into Montage Palmetto Bluff for the first time, they knew they had found the right place. KELSEY COLLAZO AND VICTOR CASTROVERDE were introduced in 2014 during Florida State University’s study abroad program in Valencia, Spain. They originally intended to wed in October 2020 in the city where they met, however, the pandemic made planning an international wedding challenging. They rescheduled three times before shifting the location to Savannah. With special help from the vision ary entrepreneur, luxury hotelier, and philanthropist Richard Kessler — a close business associate of the bride’s father — the couple created a one-of-a-kind celebration. Select wedding details hon ored the couples’ shared Cuban-American heritage, as well as the groom’s relation to the Bacardi family. SCW

SOUTHERN COASTAL WEDDINGS covers some of the most beautiful geography in the world. Although each area of the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire bears its own distinctive mark, they all share certain signatures: stately oaks draped with romantic Spanish moss, preserved historic structures and a cultural reverence for the art of hospitality. Beaufort, South Carolina, in upper Beaufort County, is awash with romance and history, a quintessential small Southern town. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, where even the gas stations have a posh patina. This island is an ode to meticulously planned high-end residences and manicured golf courses all coming together with understated elegance. Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister — an eclectic community with an artist’s soul. Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia. Savannah’s massive historic district and tree-filled squares are top-ofmind when it comes to planning a wedding here, but Savannah-area brides are spoiled for choice — beach weddings on Tybee Island, historic venues well away from the bustle of the city and even rustic farm settings make the Hostess City a versatile site for anyAboutcelebration.anhour to the south of Savannah, you’ll find Glynn County, Georgia, home of the Golden Isles — Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island, plus the mainland town of Brunswick, which offers a picturesque historic district. It’s easy to see why these islands inspired poet Sidney Lanier’s famed “Marshes of Glynn” — they offer an array of wedding venues, from elegant and exclusive villas to earthy, exquisite driftwood beaches.

2023

By HANNAH BUCHMAN & BETTY DARBY 2022

AVERAGE HIGH/LOW TEMPERATURES: Spring, 75/58; Summer, 90/75; Fall, 77/62; Winter, 60/43. Bear in mind, heat and humidity are staples of three seasons and can even show up in winter.

BEACH WEDDINGS Beach weddings, like any public gathering, may be impacted by pandemic-inspired safety restrictions.

Many areas, such as the city of Savannah, temporarily suspended or restricted the rental of public areas due to pandemic precautions. The listings below apply to normal situations; use the websites provided to check the current status.

GOLDEN ISLES: On Jekyll Island, dogs are allowed on Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island Beach and Great Dunes Park but must be leashed. On St. Simons Island, dogs are allowed on East Beach and Massengale Park (no leash required) but prohibited between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during June, July and August. jekyllisland.com; glynncounty.org

GOLDEN ISLES: To rent a historic site on Jekyll Island (e.g. the Villa Ospo, Horton House ruins) email cjoiner@jekyllisland.com or call 912.635.4168 and pay a rental fee.

GOLDEN ISLES: Alcohol is allowed on the beach but not in glass containers.

To reserve a pavilion, you’ll need to complete a reservation form at jekyllisland. com and email jekyllparks@jekyllisland.com.

RENTING AREAS/HISTORICPUBLIC

SAVANNAH: To dispense wine or beer in a square/park, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Alcohol Event Permit from the Revenue Department available at savannahga.gov and pay a $50 application fee.

SAVANNAH: To rent a square or park for your wedding, you’ll need to apply for a pub lic assembly permit, unless you are planning an extremely small gathering. Applications must be filled out at least 90 days in advance and can be found at savannahga.gov. The permit fee for residents is $350; nonresidents pay $725 ($575 in the off-season), in addition to security fees. For more information, call 912.351.3837 or visit savannahga.gov under Parks and Squares Rental.

PET LAWS ON BEACHES Regulations concerning dogs on beaches are among the most volatile that beach communities confront, so check the websites presented to make sure nothing has changed before you pack your pooch to the beach.

TIDES: If you want to be a beach bride, don’t forget the tide! Our area experiences dramatic 7-foot differences between high and low tides.

COASTAL WEATHER RAINFALL: Heaviest in August (7.2 inches), lightest in November (2.4 inches); hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but mid-August through midOctober is when locals keep a sharp eye on the weather.

GOLDEN ISLES: The Glynn County Probate Court, 701 G St. in downtown Brunswick, offers online applications and payment op tions at glynncounty.org. Appointments can be made by calling the License Department (912.554.7231) or by email: probatecourt@ glynncounty-ga.gov. The fee is $76.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND AND BLUFFTON: The Beaufort County Probate Court offers mail and appointment options for marriage li censes. Fees range from $50 to $95, depend ing on the residency status of the applicants. Learn more at beaufortcountysc.gov or from the marriage license division, 843.255.5850. Appointment options are available at the Beaufort County Probate Court’s main office at 102 Ribaut Road in Beaufort or at its satel lite office at 539 William Hilton Parkway.

Of course getting married involves paperwork and fees. We review below how to take care of the business end of getting married. At press time, COVID-19 restrictions that had been in place for more than a year were poised to lapse — but not quite yet. We’ve referenced the more restrictive versions — those that limit contact — but be aware these are likely to revert to more normal requirements. Remember to check the websites of the relevant counties as your big day approaches.

6 MONTHS This is great time to start a regimen of radio frequency microneedling with Agnes and Scarlett. These unique treatments with the revolutionary “Na and Ahn” technolo , stimulate new elastin and collagen production, while targeting pockets of fat with minimal to no swelling and down time. This can minimize jowls, submental fat and eye bags while tightening the skin and improving fine lines and wrinkles. Available exclusively at The Skin Institute and The Laser Center at Savannah Plastic Surgery.

1 WEEK Have a relaxing facial or hydrafacial with dermaplaning for that amazing wedding skin glow!

3 MONTHS Now is the perfect time to have a light chemical peel or try a hydrafacial or dermaplane. A chemical peel will remove dull skin and brighten your face. A hydrafacial will clear congested pores, plump tissues and infuse the skin with anti-aging serums. Dermaplaning will remove dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving your skin super smooth and better able to absorb all the goodness of your skincare regime. From here forward, you will want to focus on your current skincare and no downtime procedures.

4 WEEKS Now’s the final time for Botox and filler touch-ups.

P lanning a wedding is an exciting and busy time in a woman’s life. With all the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss an essential component of looking your best – taking care of your skin. Whether you are the bride or the mother of the bride, you want to look your best as the big day draws near. Let this timeline guide you through all the to-dos!

Introducing our Savannah Glam Squad for perfect wedding skin.

Left to right: Scott W. Vann, M.D., F.A.C.S. Matthew D. McLeod, M.D. Barbara L. Davies, M.D., F.A.C.S Luke J. Curtsinger, III M.D.

12 MONTHS Schedule an appointment with a licensed aesthetician and an aesthetic injectable provider. They will each assess your skin health and make recommendations for redness, brown spots and texture issues like acne and scars. They will guide you in proper skincare and may recommend chemical peels, lasers, microneedling, dermaplaning or hydrafacials. If you have lines at the forehead, between the brows or around your eyes, your injectable provider may recommend Botox/Dysport treatments to relax those muscles and smooth lines. Deep lines may require several treatments. Sagging and wrinkles due to significant volume loss can be improved with fillers, which will rebalance, lift and smooth skin. Be sure to tell them you are preparing for a wedding and what your timeline is.

PROMOTION

9 MONTHS Now is the time for procedures that require downtime or results time. Lasers can lift dark spots, improve fine lines, texture, vessels, redness, pores and build collagen over a three- to six-month period. A series of microneedling treatments will smooth and brighten skin, tighten pores and stimulate collagen.
