EDITOR’S LETTER
THERE WASN’T A GLOBAL PANDEMIC when I got married in March 2019, but my now-husband and I had our own practical and circumstantial reasons to revamp an oversized event into a midweek, midafternoon elopement — 2 p.m on a Wednesday in Savannah’s sun-dappled Pulaski Square, to be exact. The bride wore ASOS, with shoes from Target. The guest list was nil. Instead of a reception, we scarfed down burgers and champagne with two dear friends at Crystal Beer Parlor, a historic restaurant within walking distance of our teeny, tiny ceremony. From afar, my mom gifted me with a custom bridal bouquet by Urban Poppy: a wild, springtime assemblage of flowers dripping with seeded eucalyptus and innumerable tones of soft pink. On a friend’s recommendation, I hired makeup artist Sarah Lawless to compose a natural look not unlike the ones featured on page 23. I walked downstairs to show my groom the final, radiant result; he cracked an approving smile and a celebratory beer, and soon we were on our way. When we arrived downtown, I dutifully fed the parking meter, estimating coin by coin how long it would take to go from fiancée to wife. All these memories, both momentous and mundane, made

the day — one so different than what we had once envisioned — simply unforgettable. Every bride deserves the wedding of her dreams, but what happens when health concerns and restrictions might prevent that from happening? We’ve got a few ideas. From the Lowcountry creatives offering bespoke micro weddings to expert planners sharing their best insights and predictions for weddings through 2021, brides can feel confident that area vendors are facilitating safe yet stunning weddings of all sizes. This undeniably beautiful issue of Southern Coastal Weddings presents inspiration for grand affairs, too — a personal favorite is Kathryn and Ryan Pross’s waterfront Real Wedding on page 56 (Manolo Blahnik heels! Six cakes!). But even if the day is just you and your spouse-to-be, I can tell you from experience: It’s going to be perfect.

THE EXPERT: Tara Skinner, owner, Tara Skinner Weddings & Events
“The No. 1 thing we’ve been telling our brides is to be flexible,” Skinner says. Still, there are a few questions you can ask your planners to help know what to expect. Skinner says all couples should ask if there is a postponement or rescheduling fee if they have to move their date. “We personally don’t charge that fee, because we know in the end this isn’t something our brides want to happen,” she says. “We feel like an added fee on top of the chaos and stress of changing plans creates worry and anxiety for our couples, and we want to do everything we can to alleviate that.” While you might need to keep an open mind when it comes to changing your wedding date, Skinner notes other details can hold firm, even if you’re moving your wedding from spring to fall or winter to summer. “Your vendors — specifically your planner and florist — have spent countless hours working on the design for the current vision, and changing anything up or starting over could result in additional design fees.” Instead, Skinner suggests swapping out smaller accents, makeup or accessories to reflect a different season (for more, see page 23).

Peterson suggests couples consider the bespoke wedding trend. “ We have a new project called Petite Weddings Savannah that gives a couple all the fabulous elements of a full Savannah event for a fraction of the price,” she says. But even small weddings require the expert help of a planner. “ My couples have needed

Hiring vendors who are professionally safe but also innovative and creative is a must, Armstrong says. She speaks from experience: “ Lately, we’ve been presenting the wedding dinner in such a way that guests have told us it’s better than a buffet,” Armstrong says, noting standout dishes like fish en papillote and a custom crème brûleé station — “ The chef is literally sanitizing the dish as it’s being served, and it smells so good.” What’s more, if your 250-person wedding is now down to, say, 25, you can go all out for a truly unforgettable meal. “ When we get a larger group downsizing to an elopement or micro wedding, we offer our private chef menu, which we typically save for elite house parties,” she says. Armstrong admits the cake, a hallmark of any wedding, “ took a minute to figure out,” but Thrive Catering now offers a petite cake for cutting and individual cupcakes for guests. There’s also the option for a larger, more traditional cake: “ We have them schedule the cake-cutting photo early, then whisk it away to the back to portion up safely for guests,” she says.

Here’s a professional prompt, from Peterson herself: “ To our dear family and friends, we are so happy that you have expressed the desire to witness our wedding vows and share in our joy on our special day! We so wish that our original wedding plans had become a reality, but they simply are not possible at this time. To comply with guidelines for gatherings, we have chosen to have a private ceremony with a few witnesses. We will have a video created so that you will be able to attend in spirit. While you might have to shift something as drastic as your wedding day, there are other, smaller changes to consider to make sure your event is enjoyable and safe for guests, Kaar says. “ The types of changes range from spacing tables farther apart and providing hand-sanitizing stations to lowering your guest count,” Kaar says. And planning ahead — even farther ahead than you’d normally think — is a must. “ We are all hopeful that we won’t be dealing with the virus throughout 2021, but knowing what your planner’s policies are in advance will make it less stressful as you keep abreast of the current situation,” Kaar says. Go ahead and broach any concerns with your planners, too: “ Just as you discuss rain plan options for an outdoor event, you can discuss coronavirus options. The earlier you have a plan in place, the less stressful it is for everyone.”

THE EXPERT: Cynthia Creighton-Jones, owner, Cape Creations Catering Inc.
It’s natural to think about yourself during wedding planning: it’s your day, after all. But remember, changes impact your vendors, too. “ Planning a wedding is a joyous and fun process, yet now one needs to consider postponing or having a smaller wedding, and we are working with our clients to allow them to move their dates at no additional cost,” Creighton-Jones says. “ On the flip side, we hope that our clients understand that every vendor they work with is a small business, and that business has been severely impacted by COVID.” As a member of both the Savannah Wedding Vendors group and the International Caterers Association, Creighton-Jones has seen industry-wide ripple effects close to home and worldwide. Still, it’s also helped her think outside the box to accommodate brides — or inside the box, in some cases. “ For one client, we are doing a complete drop-off, with charcuterie bento boxes for hors d’oeuvres and a lovely boxed entree. Think of it as an upscale picnic box,” she says. SCW
At sign-in stations, consider adding a large container of hand sanitizer decanted into an attractive, pumpstyle bottle.

WEDDED BLISS A new elopement package trades stress for simplicity Written by JEN MARIE WIGGINS
ONCE UPON A TIME, eloping conjured up visions of a plane ride to Las Vegas and a tacky wedding chapel, replete with fake flowers and by-the-yard tulle. Today’s couples, however, seek a more thoughtful and elegant elopement, and one Savannah-based creative is answering the call, with the help of some of the city’s most esteemed vendors. Apt. B Photography owner Wendy Norman noticed that while her big weddings for spring and summer had been postponed or canceled due to coronavirus, there was an uptick in smaller, intimate weddings and elopements. “I thought about brides who either already planned one wedding and didn’t want to have to fully replan a smaller one, or brides who opted to forgo a big wedding entirely,” Norman recalls. While Norman recognized the “heartbreaking” decision to cancel dream weddings, she also saw a way to help. “I wanted to streamline the decision-making

process for those who were now choosing to elope,” she says. “I realized what they wanted and needed is simplicity — and no stress.” Drawing on her years of experience as a wedding photographer, Norman created The Savannah Elopement Package. Using a selection of hand-picked and trusted vendors, Norman’s all-inclusive, single-contract package provides all the necessary services a pair might need tie the knot in the Hostess City. The Savannah Elopement Package is designed to offer both flexibility and simplicity. The package includes photography with Apt. B Photography (Norman’s company), a bouquet and boutonniere from Ivory & Beau, a petite wedding cake from Wicked Cakes, bridal glam by Royal Makeup & Hair and use of a local officiant. When it comes to location, Norman notes Forsyth Park or any of Savannah’s many iconic squares are still the most popular places for the ceremony, though the
options are limited only by the a couple’s imagination. Certain elements are customizable (think cake and transportation options), and since she serves as a single point of contact for each wedding, Norman often provides referrals and ideas to allow couples to personalize the event even more: After the ceremony, the newlyweds might celebrate at a special restaurant or plan a small outdoor reception with a handful of family and friends. “The most important thing is that the couple feels special and unique, and that the day be tailored to them,” Norman says. “We strive to provide the same kind of on-trend details with a beautiful, modern and whimsical aesthetic — no different than any of the larger celebrations we saw before the pandemic.” Certainly, this marriage of ingenuity and service is one option that many couples will embrace. According to Rose-Marie Swift, founder of obsession-worthy clean makeup and skincare brand RMS Beauty, a minimal approach is the biggest statement a bride can make with her makeup. “The most important thing for a bride is to be herself,” Swift says. “The second is to have radiant skin.” RMS Beauty uses raw, organic ingredients like vitamin E and castor seed oil to nurture the skin, and, according to Swift, achieving a lit-from-within glow is as easy as 1, 2, 3: “The secret to beautiful skin is using the RMS Luminizer, never over-powdering and remembering that less is more.” We’ll take her word for it — Swift has beautified the faces of Gisele Bündchen, Miranda Kerr, Zoe Saldana and Tilda Swinton, to name a few. While products play a crucial role in a natural beauty look, the application is just as important. “As a seasoned make-up artist, it really just becomes intuitive,” says Jules De Jesus Fritz, owner and founder of Dollface by Jules. “Achieving natural-looking makeup isn’t necessarily about wearing less product, but rather being strategic about product placement.” For example, opt for a lighter-coverage foundation, and spot-conceal any blemishes with a more heavy-duty concealer to keep makeup undetectable. “The goal of wedding makeup,” De Jesus Fritz says, “is to make sure the bride feels like the best version of herself.”

If there’s one thing you’re guaranteed to do on your wedding day (besides cry happy tears), it’s smile. But if your smile isn’t your favorite feature, Savannah Dental’s Dr. Stephanie Sweeney recommends Invisalign aligners for a clear, no-nonsense way to straighten your teeth. Invisalign uses 3D imagery to fit your teeth and gum line exactly, Sweeney says. Every one to two weeks, with guidance from your dentist, you’ll receive new trays to keep your teeth on track with full results in as little as six months — without having to compromise your dayto-day routine. Simply take them out when you’re at your cake tasting or being treated to bachelorette cocktails. The best part? Even when they’re in, they’re hardly noticeable. If you have a “gummy” smile, you may have a hyperactive lip, Sweeney says, where the upper lip elevator muscles noticeably contract to reveal more of your gums than perhaps you’d like. A tiny injection of Botox can help relax the lip and frame your newly straightened teeth. This nonsurgical procedure provides natural results within a matter of days and lasts for months. And, of course, there’s teeth whitening. Book your in-office appointment for Zoom — the teeth-whitening procedure, not the video-conferencing app — about two weeks in advance for up to eight shades of lift. The process takes about an hour, and all you have to do is sit back and relax.

To combat any frizzy flyaways, Hannah Mills, owner of Hustle and Blow Dry Bar (a certified sustainable salon), recommends a keratin smoothing treatment. “The smoothing treatment is ultra-fast and brings hair to its ideal, most beautiful condition without damaging it or using dangerous chemicals, like formaldehyde, that are common in other treatments.” Once the hair has been prepped with a smoothing treatment, day-of styling is a breeze. Most brides opt for a half-up, half-down hairstyle that complements natural texture or added waves. No fussy updos to worry about here. For Black brides, hair stylist Jasmin Hunt of Laidbyjay recommends that a stylist and bride collaborate on the type of hair a bride selects well before the big day, ensuring the bride’s vision can be achieved. To help keep stress levels low, Hunt styles the bridal party’s hair in the week leading up to the wedding with finishing touches on the day of to keep everything looking polished. Popular wedding styles are typically updos or sew-ins that are styled into low buns with face-framing curls or pin curls and big waves. As for the one hair product a bride should keep in her touch-up kit? “Hairspray,” Mills says. Not only does it hold your style in place but it can also double as a volumizer if rubbed gently toward the root. Hunt concurs — to maintain your style, prep and pin the curls before giving them a hefty dose of hairspray, leaving them to set until just before you walk down the aisle.
It’s best to start incorporating facials and other skincare treats into your regimen six months before the wedding day to ensure any problem areas have been taken care of and that skin is prepped for any last-minute treatments. At Vitali Medspa, the Radiance HydraFacial is a favorite among bridal clients, thanks to its brightening ingredients alpha-arbutin and ascorbic acid (otherwise known as vitamin C). These are used in combination with LED light therapy to help reduce dark spots and even skin tone. To intensify results, Vitali Medspa recommends pairing the HydraFacial with a session of dermaplaning — a manual exfoliation using a medical-grade sterile blade to remove peach fuzz and dead skin cells — to help products penetrate deeper. Dr. Corrinne Howington of Low Country Dermatology shares that dermaplaning has an added benefit: makeup goes on much smoother. Two weeks before you say “I do,” consider a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) plus microneedling treatment. PRP therapy involves drawing a small amount of blood, then isolating the nutrient-dense platelets for use with microneedles. Microneedling allows for controlled stimulation of the skin’s self-repair process by creating precise, micro-injuries in the skin, triggering new collagen formation without causing scar tissue or damage. The PRP is applied where the skin has been opened to boost healing properties and catalyze the collagen production process. SCW

Ships of the Sea Museum in downtown Savannah is surrounded by the largest privately owned garden in the historic district. ✴✴✴ The charming Scarbrough Garden is ideal for wedding ceremonies offering a large brick terrace between the majestic Museum stairway and a pavilion. Under the shadow of a century-old Sycamore, this intimate garden is full of lush greenery complimented by seasonal plantings. ✴✴✴ The North Garden includes a Maple Grove and a pergola along a vine-covered brick wall. Follow the stairs down into the Assembly Room, bordered by a citrus grove and a natural garden. This open-air, covered event space has in-house lighting, a catering room, restrooms, and a private bridal suite.

The Lowcountry Lowdown Essential details for a Southern Coastal wedding, from forecasts to forms By HANNAH BUCHMAN & BETTY DARBY
S O U T HE R N C OA STAL WEDDING S covers some of the most beautiful geography in the world. Although each area of the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire bears its own distinctive mark, they all share certain signatures: stately oaks draped with romantic Spanish moss, preserved historic structures and a cultural reverence for the art of hospitality. Beaufort, South Carolina, in upper Beaufort County, is awash with romance and history, a quintessential small Southern town. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, where even the gas stations have a posh patina. This island is an ode to meticulously planned high-end residences and manicured golf courses all coming together with understated elegance. Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister — an eclectic community with an artist’s soul. Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia. Savannah’s massive historic district and tree-filled squares are top-ofmind when it comes to planning a wedding here, but Savannah-area brides are spoiled for choice — beach weddings on Tybee Island, historic venues well away from the bustle of the city and even rustic farm settings make the Hostess City a versatile site for any celebration. About an hour to the south, you’ll find Glynn County, Georgia, home of the Golden Isles — Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island, plus the mainland town of Brunswick, which offers a picturesque historic district. It’s easy to see why these islands inspired poet Sidney Lanier’s famed “Marshes of Glynn” — they offer an array of wedding venues, from elegant and exclusive villas to earthy, exquisite driftwood beaches.

COASTAL WEATHER
Rainfall: Heaviest in August (7.2 inches),
lightest in November (2.4 inches); hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but mid-August through midOctober is when locals keep a sharp eye on the weather.
Average high/low temperatures:
Spring, 75/58; Summer, 90/75; Fall, 77/62; Winter, 60/43. Bear in mind, heat and humidity are staples of three seasons and can even show up in winter.
Tides: If you want to be a beach bride, don’t forget the tide! Our area experiences dramatic 7-foot differences between high and low tides.
GETTING A MARRIAGE LICENSE The global pandemic has driven much of the paperwork involved in applying, issuing and paying for a marriage license online or by appointment. As of press time, licenses were being issued in all counties we cover, but under regulations that limit contact and call for appointments for all face-to-face contact. Licensing procedures may become more restrictive or, instead, revert to normal over the course of the year covered by this publication. With that in mind, remember to check the websites of the relevant counties as your big day approaches.
Savannah, Tybee Island and elsewhere in Chatham County: Find
the marriage license application under Probate Court at courts.chathamcountyga. gov. Email the completed application or use the court’s drop-box to return the completed application, and you will be emailed a link to set up an appointment for both parties to visit the office at 133 Montgomery St., Room 509, in downtown Savannah. Fees are $66, with discounts for those who undergo premarital education. The court currently accepts credit and debit cards, money orders or cashier’s checks, but not cash. 912.652.7264.
Golden Isles: The Glynn County Probate
Court, 701 G St. in downtown Brunswick, offers online applications and payment options at glynncounty.org. Appointments can
be made by calling the License Department (912.554.7231) or by email: probatecourt@ glynncounty-ga.gov. The fee is $76.
Hilton Head Island and Bluffton:
The Beaufort County Probate Court offers mail and appointment options for marriage licenses. Fees range from $50 to $95, depending on the residency status of the applicants. Learn more at beaufortcountysc. gov or from the marriage license division, 843.255.5850. Appointment options are available at the Beaufort County Probate Court’s main office at 102 Ribaut Road in Beaufort or at its satellite office at 539 William Hilton Parkway.
BEACH WEDDINGS Beach weddings, like any public gathering, may be impacted by pandemic-inspired safety restrictions.
Tybee Island: You’ll need a $25 beach
permit from the City of Tybee facilities manager. For details and restrictions, go to the special events planning section at cityoftybee.org or contact rrosner@cityoftybee.org.
Golden Isles: St. Simons Island beaches do not require reservations or permits for weddings. For weddings on Jekyll Island beaches, you’ll need to contact the Jekyll Island Authority at 912.635.6400.
Hilton Head Island: To perform a ceremony on the beach, you will need a permit from the Town of Hilton Head Island. The request form can be submitted online at hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
RENTING PUBLIC AREAS/HISTORIC SITES Many areas, such as the city of Savannah, temporarily suspended or restricted the rental of public areas due to pandemic precautions. The listings below apply to normal situations; use the websites provided to check the current status.
Savannah: To rent a square or park for
your wedding, you’ll need to apply for a public assembly permit. Applications must be filled out at least 90 days in advance and can be found at savannahga.gov. The
permit fee for residents is $325; nonresidents pay $625 ($475 in the off-season), in addition to security fees. For more information, call 912.351.3837 or visit savannahga. gov under Parks and Squares Rental.
Golden Isles: To rent a historic site on Jekyll Island (e.g. the Villa Ospo, Horton House ruins) email cjoiner@jekyllisland.com or call 912.635.4168 and pay a rental fee. To reserve a pavilion, you’ll need to complete a reservation form at jekyllisland. com and email jekyllparks@jekyllisland.com.
ALCOHOL LAWS FOR PUBLIC AREAS Pandemic precautions that limit crowds may impact alcohol licensing/permits for these venues.
Savannah: To dispense wine or beer in a square/park, you’ll need to apply for a Temporary Alcohol Event Permit from the Revenue Department available at savannahga.gov and pay a $50 application fee. Tybee Island: Alcohol is allowed on the beach but not in glass containers.
Golden Isles: Alcohol is allowed on the beach but not in glass containers.
Hilton Head Island: Alcohol is prohibited on all beaches.
PET LAWS ON BEACHES
Tybee Island: No dogs allowed on the
beach at any time (or you’ll face a $290 fine plus court costs).
Golden Isles: On Jekyll Island, dogs are allowed on Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island Beach and Great Dunes Park but must be leashed. On St. Simons Island, dogs are allowed on East Beach and Massengale Park (no leash required) but prohibited between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during June, July and August.
Hilton Head Island: Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach, but are prohibited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day. SCW S O U T H E R N C OA S TA L W E D D I N G S 2 0 2 0 - 2 1
