Lastuja 'Chips' - for orchestra -


i las•tu : finn. a thin, shaved off slice of wood (shaving, chip).

,,Puusta asetta vuoleksiessa lennähtelee puusepältä lastuja hänen työhuoneensa permannolle. Yksi ne lakaisee ovesta ulos, toinen nakkaa lieteen palamaan, kolmas heittää lapsille leikkikaluiksi. Tämmöiset kirjaniekan kynäelmät ovat lastuja nekin. Kun ei niitä aina henno tuleenkaan työntää, niin jättää ne niiden poimittaviksi, jotka siitä kenties ovat huvitetut.

Instrumentation : 2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo) 2 Oboes (2nd doubling Cor Anglais) 2 Clarinets in Bb (2nd doubling Bass Clarinet in Bb) 2 Bassoons (2nd doubling Contrabassoon) 4 Horns in F 2 Trumpets in C (each equipped with straight metal mute and wah-wah mute) 3 Trombones (2 Tenor, 1 Bass - all eq. with straight mute and wah-wah mute) 1 Tuba (eq. with mute) Timpani 2 Percussionists Instruments: snare drum, suspended cymbal, glockenspiel, low tam-tam, guero, large metal object (e.g. anvil, cowbell) and bass drum Harp Strings (divisible by 2, and by 1st desk soloists)

Altough the six events may be played as a suite, it is hoped that they be placed in different slots during the concert. For instance at the beginning, before the end, in between pieces or during tuning or an interval. They may be placed in any order at the discretion of the conductor.

NOTA The following 1/4-tone notations are used :

The smaller microtones are ordered as follows : (note that arrows are applicable in both directions, and on all accidentals)

Score in C (Piccolo sounds an 8ve higher, Contrabassoon and Contrabass an 8ve lower. Bass Clarinet sounds as written)
