THE PROCESS

Collaboration

and Delivery

The design process is developed through synergies with clients and goes far beyond the traditional service offering. It is clear that, today more than ever, corporate responsibility extends beyond the conceptual quality, technical rigour and project identity to also include schedule performance and cost efficiency.

The Comfort of Experience

Our design solutions meet the requirements of each market we are working in. As such, the practice has earned a very strong identity, setting itself apart as a global brand, which has necessarily brought with its agility and knowledge, to deal with the challenges on a world scale. S+A is developing local knowhow, strengthening its experience on an international scale.

BIM - Building Information Modelling

We offer sound experience and recognition as seasoned users of building information modelling (BIM) arround the world. BIM has transformed ways of working within the construction industry, rendering and clarifying all of the information associated with the life cycle of a building. Sharing and integrating data has become a must when drawing up new protocols, activities and growth strategies.

Holistic Design Services

By understanding the impact of architecture in today’s society, our proposals incorporate sustainability values, applying bioclimatic principles to improve the overall performance of built environments. A human centered design that places comfort, functionality and aesthetics at the center stage, enhancing user satisfaction and improving the overall usability.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Architecture & Urban Planning

S+A’s operations have widened to cover a vast spectrum of services, encompassing not only architecture and urban planning, but also the areas of design and sustainability. Our buildings are inspired by their surroundings and are shaped by the fundamental principles of the S+A Group: technical and conceptual quality; innovation and efficiency; sustainability and adaptation to the local reality. With this vision and our long-standing experience, we provide architectural solutions that are at once functional and commercial, with a specific focus on the needs of our clients. Designing built environments means effectively combining three factors: art, technology and economics.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Interior Design Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Global Design Investment Advisory

We believe that architecture must offer a unique, emotional experience. Our aim is to catch the attention of every individual from the exterior design of the buildings to the interior details that guarantee the distinctiveness, functionality, quality of materials and touch of genius which characterise our brand. Our broader, more motivated technical, creative and design team is tasked with developing niche programmes to suit each client’s requirements on an intimate scale. This allows us to offer turnkey projects, taking architecture to the highest level, creating spaces which are highly pleasant, visually appealing and compliant with good environmental practices.

For the past 15 years, sustainability has been a central theme for S+A Group, reflected in an increasing overall offer of sustainable and bioclimatic projects and in providing several other sustainability services, such as LEED and BREEAM certifications. This company is made of consultants, engineers and passive design architects that aim to capitalize sustainability and to grow the Group portfolio in this segment by creating innovative solutions for building design, urban built environment and eco- materials. Our mission is to continuously incorporate sustainability value into our clients’ products and projects, enabling S+A Group to become increasingly recognized as a sustainable trademark.

This company provides an exclusive global design service based on two aspects: firstly, the capacity to consider and reflect on the life of spaces at the level of their programmatic content; and secondly, the capacity to relate buildings to one another, making them sensitive to their surroundings, while also granting them a sense of belonging to the public space of which they are an inextricable part. This focus allows us to provide a truly holistic service that can, to a large extent, be applied across the international market, with a particularly strong uptake in areas relating to culture, content generation and design for museums and exhibitions.

S+A Capital provides investment services to the public and private sector through a unique integrated solution that includes consulting, capital raising and investment management. The company prepares market studies, economic/financial feasibility studies, business plan preparation, and technical advice during the various phases of the project. The company also provides investment support services, capital raising and financing line negotiations through its extensive international network of institutional investors and banks, with an extensive international experience in real estate investment in London and New York and a multidisciplinary background in investments, architecture and urbanism.

AN ADAPTIVE ACTIVITY

Dimensioning that goes far beyond simple building design, enabling the interconnection between government health policies and patient infrastructures, keeping all the players (medical staff, clinical staff, patient associations, governmental, clients) as part of the process and, thus, maximizing the effort and return of investment. Altogether S+A has a portfolio of more than 60 projects going from programming, space planning and design through construction management, with a considerable focus on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP’s) project modeling. We are committed to a full integration of all intervening parties into the process. We are also keen on tight budget control and achievement, in coordination with governmental goals, health policy improvement, all in all with the utmost concern for the patient’s wellbeing. Moreover, our design aims to have functional excellence within state of art architecture.

SERVICES PROVIDED

A Broad Spectrum of Services

We develop Health Referral Network studies, using local population and health statistical data, OMS standards and infrastructure availability. We also produce Healthcare unit’s Care Profile (Clinical Dimensioning) and Functional Program. Furthermore, our Functional Concept Design establishes clinical and patient flows, security and infection control, medical services layout and interaction, resource sharing and management operations optimization. Our concept is fully integrated between function and aesthetics, all key factors for humanization and patientcentered care, together with tight costcontrol and rational architectural design. Additionally, we extend our services to building’s Engineering and Sustainable Design, Medical Fixed Equipment Design and Integrated Scheme Design and Construction Documents

BEATRIZ ÂNGELO HOSPITAL

LOURES, PORTUGAL

The winning entry in a public competition promoted by the Portuguese National Health Service, this project was designed on a human scale, pursuing a desire to humanise the whole and reflect new paradigms in the doctor-patient relationship. The proposal is based on a network typology in which the movement and communication scheme aims to respond effectively to the intensity of interactions and to provide functional flexibility, taking into account potential future adaptations and the evolution of the building’s life cycle. The design thus contemplates potential future conversions and extensions appropriate for a health unit. Throughout the entirety of the site and its surroundings, the complex strikes a compositional balance between volume, landscape and infrastructure. Inside, operational functionality is punctuated by green patios and opportune openings in the façades. These channels of light and life serve to humanise the space and break up the relatively stark medical environment.

CUF SINTRA HOSPITAL

SINTRA, PORTUGAL

Under the close surveillance of the majestic Sintra Mountains as a backdrop, we find the new CUF Hospital, a project developed by S+A. An image was sought that reconciles the existing industrial building with the new constructions. The two-level expansion volumetry gives continuity to the building around a central square. The volumes have gaps in the façades and are framed by prismatic white elements. In the built environment there are spaces dedicated to green areas of stay, which promotes the external quality of the intervention area, and humanizes this equipment. The location of the south terrace is suitable in view of the high sun exposure and protection from the prevailing northern winds. The central square that promotes the main public access to the building, has a carefully designed living space and is protected by a visor. The main entrance and the user entrance are in an open space between the buildings, where besides the visibility of the square, there is an interior patio that allows the difference of scales and its integration with the natural green spaces.

The Maria José Nogueira Pinto Long-Term Care and Convalescence Unit was designed following a tender for the restoration and conversion of a former factory and office building. Preserving the existing volume, the intervention is intended to be elegant, flexible and functional, allowing for quick alteration of the layout and modules without disturbance to the normal running of the health care unit. The building, comprising five floors above ground level and a basement floor, has capacity for 73 beds. Optimising the building’s high ceilings, large rooms were designed, which are light and airy.

SIDI BEL ABBÈS ONCOLOGY CENTRE

SIDI BEL ABBÈS, ALGERIA

The proposal is based on the creation of an institutional building capable of reflecting a sober image and of simplifying and streamlining interaction with pre-existing volumes. The complex, comprising a vast set of units linked to the provision of cancer-related care, must safeguard the functional principles of a contemporary health building, effective but capable of increasing the quality and comfort of the patients undergoing specialised treatments provided there. The circuits have been optimised for each medical purpose and ensure the separation, privacy, flexibility and adaptability of the interior space – in the sense of a humanisation and personalisation of the treatment and cure plans. Located in the Algerian market, the project follows the local moulds of inhabiting places and uses a visual language framed within the surroundings. Its horizontal volume reduces its impact on the area and favours a harmonious perception of the complex, which is integrated and interconnected with the rest of the urban network.

HOSPITAL RELOCATION PROJECT

QINHUANGDAO, CHINA

S+A came second place in the international competition launched for the hospital in Qinhuangdao, a city 280km from Beijing. Our proposal was based on the construction of a complex with simple but institutional language, of deep aesthetic and functional harmony. The two principles at the core of this project were related to the sustainability of materials (taking into consideration the need for cleaning and sterilisation which are essential conditions in hospital environments) and accessibility (indoor and outdoor). The low-density complex is formed of various interlinked buildings, situated within an artificial forest, intended to provide environmental comfort to users and to respond to future needs relating to the provision of long-term healthcare services. The open interior patios, fitted with green spaces, illuminate the interior space, providing additional general comfort to users.

A new entrance clearly indicates the formal upgrading of the space.
