THE PROCESS

Collaboration

and Delivery

The design process is developed through synergies with clients and goes far beyond the traditional service offering. It is clear that, today more than ever, corporate responsibility extends beyond the conceptual quality, technical rigour and project identity to also include schedule performance and cost efficiency.

The Comfort of Experience

Our design solutions meet the requirements of each market we are working in. As such, the practice has earned a very strong identity, setting itself apart as a global brand, which has necessarily brought with its agility and knowledge, to deal with the challenges on a world scale. S+A is developing local knowhow, strengthening its experience on an international scale.

BIM - Building Information Modelling

We offer sound experience and recognition as seasoned users of building information modelling (BIM) arround the world. BIM has transformed ways of working within the construction industry, rendering and clarifying all of the information associated with the life cycle of a building. Sharing and integrating data has become a must when drawing up new protocols, activities and growth strategies.

Holistic Design Services

By understanding the impact of architecture in today’s society, our proposals incorporate sustainability values, applying bioclimatic principles to improve the overall performance of built environments. A human centered design that places comfort, functionality and aesthetics at the center stage, enhancing user satisfaction and improving the overall usability.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Architecture & Urban Planning

S+A’s operations have widened to cover a vast spectrum of services, encompassing not only architecture and urban planning, but also the areas of design and sustainability. Our buildings are inspired by their surroundings and are shaped by the fundamental principles of the S+A Group: technical and conceptual quality; innovation and efficiency; sustainability and adaptation to the local reality. With this vision and our long-standing experience, we provide architectural solutions that are at once functional and commercial, with a specific focus on the needs of our clients. Designing built environments means effectively combining three factors: art, technology and economics.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Interior Design Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Global Design Investment Advisory

We believe that architecture must offer a unique, emotional experience. Our aim is to catch the attention of every individual from the exterior design of the buildings to the interior details that guarantee the distinctiveness, functionality, quality of materials and touch of genius which characterise our brand. Our broader, more motivated technical, creative and design team is tasked with developing niche programmes to suit each client’s requirements on an intimate scale. This allows us to offer turnkey projects, taking architecture to the highest level, creating spaces which are highly pleasant, visually appealing and compliant with good environmental practices.

For the past 15 years, sustainability has been a central theme for S+A Group, reflected in an increasing overall offer of sustainable and bioclimatic projects and in providing several other sustainability services, such as LEED and BREEAM certifications. This company is made of consultants, engineers and passive design architects that aim to capitalize sustainability and to grow the Group portfolio in this segment by creating innovative solutions for building design, urban built environment and eco- materials. Our mission is to continuously incorporate sustainability value into our clients’ products and projects, enabling S+A Group to become increasingly recognized as a sustainable trademark.

This company provides an exclusive global design service based on two aspects: firstly, the capacity to consider and reflect on the life of spaces at the level of their programmatic content; and secondly, the capacity to relate buildings to one another, making them sensitive to their surroundings, while also granting them a sense of belonging to the public space of which they are an inextricable part. This focus allows us to provide a truly holistic service that can, to a large extent, be applied across the international market, with a particularly strong uptake in areas relating to culture, content generation and design for museums and exhibitions.

S+A Capital provides investment services to the public and private sector through a unique integrated solution that includes consulting, capital raising and investment management. The company prepares market studies, economic/financial feasibility studies, business plan preparation, and technical advice during the various phases of the project. The company also provides investment support services, capital raising and financing line negotiations through its extensive international network of institutional investors and banks, with an extensive international experience in real estate investment in London and New York and a multidisciplinary background in investments, architecture and urbanism.

SECTOR BOOK PUBLIC BUILDINGS 11

JUDICIARY POLICE HEADQUARTERS

LISBON, PORTUGAL

The project pays tribute to the culture of one of the most prestigious police institutions in Portugal with a rigorously designed building on a humanised scale, which blends perfectly into the surrounding environment. Designed as a hierarchy of geometric recessions, the exterior image is one of sober lines with glazed surfaces, interspersed with opaque elements, creating a balance between filled and empty spaces. This apparent transparency and randomness minimises the impact which is common among exteriors of buildings of this size. Inside, the space was equipped with advanced technology and security devices which make the Judiciary Police headquarters one of the most modern corporate buildings in Portugal. Meanwhile, patios were included to prioritise the availability of natural light, creating plays of light and shadow, and pleasant workspaces which minimise stress and disturbances. The top of the new building features a heliport. An outdoor car park with capacity for more than 500 vehicles was built outside.

BEATRIZ ÂNGELO HOSPITAL

LOURES, PORTUGAL

The winning entry in a public competition promoted by the Portuguese National Health Service, this project was designed on a human scale, pursuing a desire to humanise the whole and reflect new paradigms in the doctor-patient relationship. The proposal is based on a network typology in which the movement and communication scheme aims to respond effectively to the intensity of interactions and to provide functional flexibility, taking into account potential future adaptations and the evolution of the building’s life cycle. The design thus contemplates potential future conversions and extensions appropriate for a health unit. Throughout the entirety of the site and its surroundings, the complex strikes a compositional balance between volume, landscape and infrastructure. Inside, operational functionality is punctuated by green patios and opportune openings in the façades. These channels of light and life serve to humanise the space and break up the relatively stark medical environment.

JUSTICE CAMPUS OF LISBON

LISBON, PORTUGAL

The Office Park EXPO project, which currently houses the Justice Campus of Lisbon, was built on a plot of land occupying 30,000 m2, located in Parque das Nações. It consists of a group of ten office buildings, the heights of which vary between 3 and 18 floors. The project was developed in partnership with two other architecture studios, with a single vision and the same commitment in the enhancement of the space and the common understanding that the territory is a determinant factor for the declaration of new urban planning in the city of Lisbon. Visual homogeneity was sought, notwithstanding the different experiences and complementary functions envisaged. The group of buildings is sober, refined and contemporary. The internal organisation serves the idea of flexibility and versatility of occupation, permitting appropriations in accordance with use and requirements dictated by circumstances. A special focus should be given to Tower H, the original design of which was developed by S+A.

The ITHNGE - National Institute of Hydrocarbon Technology - is located in Mongomo. The project aims to develop a quality architectural solution for this highly specialised centre, which should concentrate various fields of knowledge in order to guarantee maximum comfort, safety and functionality to its operation. By adding additional areas, the creation of connecting axes between buildings is achieved through new geometries and individual accesses. An architectural solution was also guaranteed at the structural level, capable of guaranteeing flexibility and versatility in the substitution of some functions for others, without conditioning the structural model. A regular and orthogonal network shape was chosen. The natural lighting of the circulation spaces, the heterogeneity of elevations and the horizontal laminar image give this building a light and very transparent look. Sustainability was strategically programmed in accordance with bioclimatic principles. Materials with a low environmental impact were used and the efficiency of existing resources was increased. All of these elements reflect a contemporary and cosmopolitan image, of international standards.

PICO’S MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

AZORES, PORTUGAL

The land on which the school was built had a complex orography with steep slopes, with a total of 38 metres separating the lowest point from the highest. The main challenge of the project, therefore, was related to its adaptation to the physical geography and to the successful installation of an extensive range of functions, while achieving a result which blended and camouflaged into the landscape. The complex comprises three core areas located on different levels. The allocation of the levels was established on the basis of avoiding visual obstacles, allowing views of the sea and of the horizon, which represent the main theme of the project. The plans stipulated the use of materials which would incur the lowest maintenance costs in this seafront location. The exterior cladding is coloured concrete, while the interiors feature hydraulic tiles, wood and highly resistant self-levelling flooring. The infrastructure is clearly visible, ensuring easy access, and the equipment is installed inside the building, minimising its exposure to the elements.

MINISTRY OF MINES, INDUSTRY AND ENERGY

MALABO, EQUATORIAL GUINEA

The conceptual idea that led to the realisation of this project is closely linked to very specific characteristics. We wanted to develop an architectural solution of quality and functionality by combining a modern image with context. The distance between the two blocks of buildings promotes a space for passage and generates outdoor areas, promoting the integration of the buildings into the surroundings. Taking this into account, the integration of the project into the surroundings was reinforced by the use of solar energy, anticipating winds and thermal amplitudes on a daily basis. Other benefits are related to thermal energy deposits, solar exposure, ventilation and cooling control and improving the equipment and its use. The architecture project intends to make the conversion of the buildings flexible, without significant additional investment and without modifying the previous functional structure of services. All solutions submitted respect bioclimatic principles with a contemporary international and cosmopolitan reference.

Built in the Covilhã Technology Park, Parkubis is divided into two separate bodies, equipped with their own features, but interconnected by a bridge that links them. Horizontal lines, intended to minimise the volumetric impact of the complex, contribute to its sobriety. The use of large glass surfaces between gaps and empty spaces harmonises the composition. Inside, the division of space obeys functional requirements: the administrative and business support services are located in the main body, while the secondary services – auditorium, bar and restaurant – are situated in the smaller support body. The street layout establishes the separating element between the blocks, which are only connected on the upper level, allowing for their autonomous operation.

TOURISTIC FLUVIAL QUAY

FOLGOSA, PORTUGAL

In a region universally known for its wine and glorious landscapes, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, lies the Folgosa Tourist and River Pier, in Régua, along the Douro River. The proposal for the overhaul and regeneration of the space is focused on the landscaping of the strip of land bordering the river. The two volumes designed for this site are interconnected by a curvilinear walkway, in a close relationship between the built environment and the natural environment. Supported by a wooden structure, a contemporary solution is guaranteed that, in a play between the opacity of the elevations and the opening of the spans, celebrates the riverine landscape. The tourist area comprises two volumes, one intended for a bar/ restaurant, equipped with infrastructures to support the river quay and another for a kiosk to serve the leisure areas. Access to the main building is via a wide walkway, which leads to a decked esplanade area. This esplanade is also encircled by the walkway that connects the river pier and the tourist pier – forming an integral part of the pedestrian regularisation route designed for the enjoyment of the majestic landscape. Next to the top of the walkway is the second building, the support kiosk, the multi-purpose function of which provides that it can revert to a newspaper and magazine stand or a tourist information centre.

UNIVERSITY OF LISBON STUDENT RESIDENCE

LISBON, PORTUGAL

The challenge of the competition involved attempting to create a new urban landmark, until now absent in the area. A specific project inserted into the larger context of the university, which sought to address the urgent need for accommodation for displaced students in a timely manner. With this aim in mind and the possibility of building a long-lasting, sustainable accommodation solution in harmony with the designated site, we designed a unit somewhat reminiscent of Corbusier’s Unités d’habitation, which operated almost independently, their various functional parts interlinking to form a single organism, and we created a modern architectural landmark in complete harmony and dialogue with the surrounding buildings.

PARAGUAY GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS

ASUNCIÓN, PARAGUAY

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications of Paraguay proposed the creation of an ‘idyllic space capable of meeting the needs of citizens’. The building would be located in a 2.5-hectare allotment located in the port area of the city of Asunción. The S+A project, which received second place in this competition, proposed a volume promoting free circulation in which each of the ministries would be immediately identifiable. With an almost transparent materiality, the concept aimed to reveal the building’s inner dynamics. The complex comprised five buildings, designed in a contemporary and sober style. The use of glass façades interspersed with tonal variations gave rhythm to the overall design. Integration into the surrounding urban environment was a priority for such a privileged site. As such, public spaces were designed in harmony with the surroundings, endowed with dedicated social spaces and designed to marry the institutional use of the building with a communal and inclusive urban feel.

MEMORIAL COMPLEX

ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN

This exemplary architectural proposal consists of a glazed volume measuring 330 metres high, which highlights and prioritises the main entrance to the built complex. On the site, two museums give substance to the figure, both physically and spiritually. One houses the permanent exhibition on the founding of the Kazakh nationality. While the other portrays the long road towards the Nation’s future. Each of the elements proposed explores a layer of memory, understood as a social construct, conveying the principle that tomorrow is based on a more or less distant, yet foundational past. The surrounding area is designed to represent a natural extension of the symbolisms depicted.
