Proposed Redevelopment of

SUNWAY RESORT HOTEL & SPA

& SUNWAY PYRAMID TOWER EAST at Bandar Sunway

INTERIOR DESIGN PRE-CONCEPT Resort Redevelopment & Repositioning

The Client’s Vision Statement The Redevelopment shall re-invent the founder’s vision and bring Sunway back to the forefront of the Hospitality offerings in Malaysia. The hotels with their new signature interiors shall be in line with the architectural building design and shall celebrate ultimate and unique luxury, morphed through a contemporary design interpretation. The re-development shall re-create an internationally recognized Landmark that will remain unprecedented and unique with time and shall meet the current and future clientele.

The Interior Designer’s Response We see this project as a unique opportunity to create a completely new guest experience from arrival throughout the entire stay to a happy and memorable departure. The Client’s Vision to have a product of the highest standard with residential family hospitality units of very generous size and appointment, needs to be met by an outstanding Interior Design Concept that sets a new benchmark for Malaysia. The three key points of the design approach are: a) National Park in Malaysia: The 7 Wonders of Malaysia, add the cultural dimension b) Re-interpret the recognized identity of Sunway Resort and elaborate on it, added selected amenities c) Position both hotels as styled alternatives for slightly different budgets, both luxury and eloquent We believe that our design ideas and approach will meet and comfortably exceed the Client’s ambition.

THE SUNWAY RESORT HOTEL & SPA (SRHS 5-star 439-keys)

DESIGN APPROACH AND POSITIONING A new 5-star resort and destination hotel with fully integrated guest facilities and a theme water park, as well as all-day premium conference and ballroom facilities with complimenting food and beverage extravaganza. The ballroom, meeting rooms and pre-function areas shall be maintained in their physical presence, upgraded and freshened up, at the same time maintained in their current character and image.

THE GUEST ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE The mood is set when the guests turn onto the property and see the grand entrance from the vehicle. The hallmark urban resort image so well-known is maintained but enhanced through a softer touch. We are proposing to maintain the main exterior entrance feature, at the same time to explore and upgrade, as well as to complement the signature look. This is achieved via the selection and addition of materials and plants, so as to soften the currently very hard looking landscape.

THE LOBBY

GLASS-BOTTOM SKY LOUNGE

Once the guest alights from the vehicle, the guest is immediately captured by the celebratory feel and sparkle of the themed lobby. The ‘Seven Wonders of Malaysia’ welcome the guest. The strong design features and identity of the entrance sculptures and symbols of Sunway Resort are maintained and carried into the Lobby. A new pair of elephant sculptures is introduced, gracing both sides of the widened step-up stairs at the entrance. The main central feature of the lobby can be combined with the existing main chandelier (this can remain to save costs or replaced with a newly designed lighting installation). The ceiling over the main focus and chandelier will feature a magnificent explorer and travelers map to create an exotic feel. Malay themed accents are added to the mezzanine balcony and the feature mosaic walls on the left of the lobby and at the mezzanine level.

Perched fourteen floors above the themed waterpark and easily accessible for all guests from the main lobby, we propose to create a cantilevered glass-bottom viewing lounge that allows for great picture-taking with the Sunway Water Park and skyline as the back drop. This important new identity feature will surely become a desirable selfiephoto spot in Malaysia. This will create a big impact and a talking point on social networks and can be used as a great marketing tool. We are proposing non-reflective glass, so as to allow for reflection-free picture taking during the day as well as in the evening. A simple steel structure will support the suspended, fully air-conditioned and covered tempered glass jewelry box. The ceiling in the buildingside seating area will feature a recess with an old travelling map of Malaysia to emphasize the importance of place.

The grand space has been rearranged, the reception repositioned and the back wall to the right opened up to draw in the visitors towards the main view of the Resort. The newly decorated and configured Lobby will be more inviting and giving the guest a true sense of welcome and arrival. It will look stunning both during the day and at night.

THE TIGER DEN LOBBY LOUNGE AND A NEW SKYLINE TERRACE BAR The new Lobby Lounge will be the Tiger Den. We are proposing to redefine the current lobby lounge by creating a stepped-up area and by reducing its foot print and to use the gained floor area by supplementing it with a covered and open-air viewing terrace. The materials in the indoor lounge will feature tiger-patterned carpet floors, Malay themes on the walls and interesting non-geometrical features on the ceiling, so as to give the area a sense of place. The new lounge will feel very inviting during the day and cozy in the evening. The newly designed covered large terrace will be the ideal place to have a sun-downer or to simply take in the breathtaking views of the back drop Sunway Waterpark and skyline. Selected materials will be both inspired by colonial themes and traditional Sarawak patterns. Ceiling fans and vapor-spray provisions will make the space very comfortable also during the warmer months of the year. Commercially we are aiming to create an additional attraction that will assist in multiplying the returns on this prime revenue creating floor area, just adjacent to the lobby. The overall aim of the design is to create a memorable experience with modern elegance and a truly global flair. This is the new place to see and be seen in this part of Kuala Lumpur.

THE ELEVATOR LOBBY AND COMMON AREAS The luxurious feel of the arrival lobby is materialized and carried into the area of the lift lobby and guestroom floor corridors. Materials are closely related to the color scheme and selection in the lobby and public areas.

THE GUEST SUITES The overarching goal is to make these suites very special, luxurious and well-appointed as well as to give them a very high-end residential feel. The arriving guest will be so pleased when entering this environment of subtle luxury and will want to stay in the suite longer than originally planned. The main feature of the room is the head board wall with a semi-matt glass panel with a back-painted nature theme. We are proposing to consider wooden floors with a throw rug to give a residential resort feeling. We have been very careful with the selection of the proposed materials in the bathroom. Precious selections include natural stones, luxurious fabric and warm and elegant fabrics. The choice of colors includes elegant and rich tones accentuated by selected sparkle. The bathroom layouts have been modified to make optimal use of the space. The floors and walls are appointed with natural stones and accent highlighted with specialty lighting.

THE NEW FAMILY SUITES For the affluent guest from the Middle East and from East Asia traveling as extended families and with a lot of luggage, we are proposing to implement a series of generously spaced family suites of various sizes, for Sunway Resort to be again the new trend-setter in Malaysia. These new suites selectively combine existing guestrooms and utilize some internal floor spaces, previously occupied by a spa. We are proposing to create family suites that allow for families of up to four adults and four children staying in the same suite. This is achieved by offering bedrooms with bunk beds, walk-inclosets and multiple wet rooms with separate toilets, so that early morning queuing time for bathrooms can be eliminated – a current issue in many traditional hotels. For the family suites that do not have natural light, we have developed the owner’s idea of incorporating large TV screens or back projection to create moods and themed atmospheres in line with the time of day or marketing driven programs. In each bedroom we are proposing a feature wall that creates depth and offers the impression of large space. The highlight for the kids will be to choose which bunk bed to sleep in. Additionally we are proposing to have tromp l’oeil ceilings showing blue skies and spring cloud patterns. Proposed family suites range in sizes from 96 m2 (up to 6 people can stay) to 130 m2 (up to 8 people can stay).

THE ADAPTION AND REPOSITIONING OF THE TWO AUDITORIUM SPACES Located along the guest corridor, these two auditoria have been under-utilized in the past and have not contributed adequately to creating revenue in support of the adjacent guestrooms. We are therefore proposing to convert adjacent and opposite guestrooms into family suites and to offer a program that includes the usage of these auditoriums for managed and catered activities. This represents an additional revenue potential for the hotel operation. We envision special screening of children’s cartoons, performance of shadow and puppet theatre or to offer the space for private parties with the hotel catering for special presentations or screenings.

THE ADAPTION AND REPOSITIONING OF THE FORMER ALL-DAY-DINING RESTAURANT AND THE GROUND FLOOR The space of the former all-day dining venue is ideally located on the ground floor to create new spaces for guest from the Middle East and larger groups from the Far East. Some area will be converted into Majlis space divided into ‘family’ and ‘lady only’ areas for the guests from the Middle East. Window and partitioning glazing appropriately treated, this will allow for female guests to enjoy the views of the gardens and pools without being seen from outside, all in an air conditioned environment. Other adjacent areas also located on the ground floor will be used for group arrivals and orientation or for rest areas for guests who have odd arrival or departure times or before the guestrooms are available for occupancy. The design theme will feature exciting tropical and waterrelated Malay artwork and materials (Sabah, Orangutan and Tropical Rain Forest). All lounge areas will have external screened seating areas. As this area currently is already supported by fully functioning kitchens and BOH access, we propose to utilize some of the equipment to be able for the hotel to offer catering services in the style of executive lounges. Additionally we would also like to propose consideration of a kid’s club room, game room, mini theatre and late check-out counters.

CONNECTIVITY AND LUSH ARRIVAL LANDSCAPE

DESIGN APPROACH AND POSITIONING With the creation of the new indoor connection between the two resort hotels, the guest will have a totally new experience in easily transiting from one lobby to the other and from optimizing the use of all facilities within the resort. We have aimed to create this new connection with the least physical change to the areas that functionally work well at present. Branching off the resort lobby, the new passage will be part of the hotel and the guest will exit into the existing passage near the point of the escalator platform. Newly decorated and fitted with a new public address system that allows for themed background music, this passage will be upgraded and made into an important and comfortable space for the guest.

THE SUNWAY PYRAMID TOWER EAST (SPTE 4-Star 549-keys)

DESIGN APPROACH AND POSITIONING A new elegant resort and destination hotel with fully integrated guest facilities with complimenting food and beverage offerings. Rather than branding the East Tower as an x-star, we propose to position both hotels as integrated price-alternatives without giving an East Tower guest the feeling of being a less appreciated customer. This tower with its similarly sized rooms will be a fully integrated part of the resort with similar luxury, at the same time offering a slightly more price-conscious product. The East Tower is given its own distinct identity with a more modern and trendy interpretation of the themed design.

THE LOBBY – THE GUEST ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE

THE MEZZANINE SPACES TO BE TURNED INTO A KIDS EVENT HALL

The new lobby is very functional and practical for operations. With its high ceiling, we propose to create an entierly new look. The proposed ceiling is backilluminated with a batik themed design. The appearance of the center core is changed and made look less heavy by incorporating a design with perforated and back-light panels. We are proposing a more contemporary lounge with additional seating.

We propose to utilize this available space on the Mezzanine Floor to be turned into an activity space for young guests. The proposed design will borrow from lobby themes and integrate colors and materials suitable for kids and young adult spaces. We aim to give this new supporting function area a new and trendy look.

THE ELEVATOR LOBBY AND GUESTROOM CORRIDORS We propose to style the corridors in a very contemporary, modern and fresh looking style. Being conscious of a cost-effective selection of materialize we intend to take some design elements from the lobby – perforated backlight see-through panels for the ceiling, distinctly colored carpets that repeat lobby patterns and practical materials for walls and access panels that are easy to maintain and are durable.

THE GUEST ROOMS A NEW GROUP ORIENTATION AND GREETING SPACE (formerly planned to be a lobby bar) A new group lounge is being created that will functionally allow orientation and group check-in, all based on the theme of a nice café. Arriving guests can be served a welcome drink and a cold towel, served from this location.

The guests who choose the East Tower price point and product should feel equally welcome and pampered as the other guests in the resort. The feature of the room will be the headboard wall with a graphic adaption and modern interpretation of Malay batik themes. As a point of difference we propose to implement the wet-bathroom type, in which bathtub and shower are in the same screened-off area. This will be very suitable for the new guest profile with increased arrivals from the Middle East and Asia.

NEW USAGE FOR THE IRONING HALLS The former ironing rooms are very suitable to be turned into special family suites. If adopted, the layout ideas will be similar to the proposed plans in the Resort tower. The colors and materials used will be a contemporary interpretation and will be similar to the new guestroom suites and bathrooms here in the East Tower.

DESIGN ELEMENTS Developing ideas & Decoding forms

Our design elements are derived from exploring and manipulating the figure of those living creatures and natural forms. Please turn to the next page to see a part of our design and thinking process.

Exploring forms by tracing through geometric shapes and textures, collecting relevant images or materials that refer to the subject.

Exploring from keywords, for example in this case, ‘SYMMETRY’.

Close-up the subject to study textures and details.

Selecting colours from the image to ensure that any colour applied on the design is not random.

02 BEYOND FLORA & FAUNA Inspiration from Malaysian textile art, including forms, patterns, and storytelling.

Batik is a technique for decorating textile, which applied by either hand paint or block print than by weaving with thread.

A medium of expression for artists through natural forms and geometric shapes.

02 BEYOND FLORA & FAUNA Inspiration from Malaysian textile art, including forms, patterns and storytelling. According to the Islamic doctrine, displaying animals as a decorative element is prohibited, so that Malaysian Batik depicting humans or animals are rare. However, butterfly theme is an exception.

Malaysian Batik usually patterned with florals motifs with light and vibrant colouring. It is also famous for its geometrical designs.
