ne year ago this month we premiered the first issue of Savvy Kids. One year later, we are proud to continue publishing great information for parents and kids alike in central Arkansas. Just as any parent would tell you, the first year of a child's life can be pretty tough, and it's no different in the publishing world. Because of our dedicated readers, Savvy Kids will continue to be a leading resource for your family. We have many things planned as we kick off our second year. New features and fun events are just a few of the things Savvy readers can look forward to. We are kicking things off with an awesome event at the Museum of Discovery. From 1-3 p.m. admission will be discounted for families when they present their Savvy Kids Club Card. Savvy Kids will have a booth set up for parents to join our Savvy Kids Club and take a tour of the new Savvy Kids Party Room in the museum. We also hope you will take the time to look through our MOM section. From the latest trends to must-have mom-gear, you can find it all, locally, starting on page 18. Also be sure to meet our Savvy Mom of the month, Angela Moody. Moody has made a name for herself in the community for hosting and organizing events for many non-profit organizations in central Arkansas. Although she stays incredibly busy, Moody always makes time for her family. On page 17 read how she keeps it all together. Parents, be sure to visit our Web site: savvykidsofarkansas.com. Take a few moments to sign up for the Savvy Kids Club. Club members receive a weekly e-newsletter filled with discounts from the stores we all love to shop, as well as a listing of upcoming events, and featured family-friendly local businesses. While you're there, let us know of any upcoming events taking place in the lives of your little ones. Simply fill out the Event Form and your child could be featured in an upcoming issue of Savvy Kids! Happy March!

prom Follow these don't-forget tips and make this year’s prom more than a great memory.
Prince Charming to fall for the Prom Princesses wearing classic fairy-tale ball gowns. Jewel tones are hot this year and trendy prints will set your dress apart from the rest. One-shoulder dresses and dresses with glamorous backs always create an elegant and sophisticated look. As for the tux: classic black is always in style! However, prom is a fun event and guys can get away with wearing bold colors or a vibrant vest and tie.
▼
accessories
Okay, you’ve done the big part. A dress is by far the most crucial item for prom, but you shouldn’t underplay the importance of accessories. You are a whole package; head to toe, shoes to hair! Jewelry can play an important part in your prom night ensemble. It accents your gown and it enhances your own personal style. You should know it’s important not to wear too much jewelry. Even a beautiful piece may overwhelm the look of the dress. If a lot of jewelry is your style, you might want to down play it this night. Most prom dresses are fine with a minimum of jewelry. Simple earrings and an elegant and tasteful necklace will do the trick.
▼
the dress
When it comes to prom, the first task is finding the perfect dress or tux. There are hundreds of styles to choose from. Start by browsing the styles to see what will flatter your shape and
budget. Be prepared to try on dozens of dresses before you find “the one.” Just because it looks good on the hanger…well, you know where I’m going with this. Flirty, fun short prom dresses will make a fashion splash, and watch for
A purse, clutch or bag is the finishing touch to the perfect outfit. And not only is it the cherry on top, but is vital for carrying necessary items. Just remember to choose something small so you don’t have to be bothered with a bulky bag the whole night.
▼
hair
Whether you’re going to a salon or doing it yourself at home, it’s always a good idea to plan ahead. Look through magazines for ideas and decide what type of hair you want. Beautiful hair can be one of your best accessories. If you’re going to a salon, make your appointment early (they’ll be very busy around prom time). Schedule a “practice” session. Explain your ideas so the stylist knows exactly what you want. You don’t want any surprises on the day of the prom. If you are doing your hair at home, the same rule applies.
▼c orsage
and boutonniere
Ladies, clue your date in on your dress color and style! There is nothing wrong with letting your date know you have your heart set on a certain type or color of flower. You can even go to the florist together to pick them out. Show the florist a photo of your dress, or a swatch of the fabric. The florist can then coordinate it with the flowers. If you are wearing a strapless gown, consider a wrist corsage. Order your flowers at least two weeks in advance. Florist can get very busy and you want your flowers in time! Discuss your budget with your florist and ask for ideas. An inexpensive bloom can be just as beautiful as a more expensive flower. The arrangement is important and a good florist will work with you!

dinner
If your school doesn’t offer dinner, be sure to plan ahead. Make reservations
How Much Will the Prom Cost?
if you desire to dine at a nice restaurant. The restaurant will probably be filled with fellow prom goers, so leave plenty of time for dining. Being late may be fashionable, but you wouldn’t want to show up just in time for the final dance. When ordering, keep in mind not to eat anything messy; you would hate it if your dress or tux were ruined before you even got to make your grand entrance. But if you do spill something, club soda is known to work miracles.

the big night
Now before you climb into that ride, whether it’s a limo, your parent’s car, or the beat-down ride your boyfriend dared to show up in, check the weather. If there is the slightest chance of rain, don’t forget the umbrella. It would be embarrassing to show up looking like a drowned rat. If you are riding in your date’s car, be sure to check the fuel gauge. Who knows if a gas station will be open after the prom? You wouldn’t want your evening spoiled by running out of gas. What would be worse than ending the evening in a long cold stroll in those heels you can barely walk in? So I bet you are wondering what to expect when you walk into that door. Will it be filled with balloons? Elegant arches? A stylish pathway? Whatever the décor, you will remember this moment forever. Stay away from alcohol and drugs. They are not only illegal, but they can make
Quick answer? Anywhere from $175 to $2100. It all depends on your budget. Be sure to discuss the budget with your date. It’s a modern world, splitting the cost is always an option. Let’s break it down. • PROM TICKETS Depending on the location, prom tickets can be anywhere from $20 to $250. If your prom is being held in a fancy hotel or ballroom it may be more costly than if it is being held in your school gymnasium. • PRE-PROM DINNER A lot of proms don’t provide a full dinner, so you may decide to go out to eat before
you do something you may regret forever. If your date is your ride and he sneaks off and returns intoxicated, get another ride home. If this means calling your parents - swallow your pride. It could mean your life. Speaking of parents, make sure to check in with them a few times during the evening. Make sure they know where you are going, and when you get there. Be sure there is a number at which you can be reached. If there is a curfew set, be sure to keep an eye on the clock. If you think the curfew is unreasonable, don’t argue; just work it out ahead of time. If your date’s curfew differs from yours, work this out also. Do yourself a favor, and get a camera! Take pictures of everything from getting ready for the big event to the post prom party. Be sure to allow plenty of time for everybody’s parents to take pictures. If at all possible arrange for all of the parents, relatives, and friends to meet at one house. This can cut picture time down dramatically. Also, you can get a lot of great pictures with your friends and their dates. If you get a limo, be sure to get plenty of pictures beside the limo, getting into the limo, and sitting inside with all of your friends. These photos will become treasured memories for generations to come!
the dance. Dinner could run anywhere from $25 to $130 per person. • HAIR/MAKE-UP/NAILS & STUFF This cost will vary depending on your choices. Whether you head to the salon or opt to do it yourself, the cost here could be anywhere from $30 to $275. • PROM GOWN/TUX Most prom dresses cost between $100 and $400. Most tux rentals cost between $75 and $250. • BOUTONNIERE/FLOWERS The boy’s boutonniere and girl’s corsage usually costs from $10 to $30. It
depends on the type of flowers. • FORMAL PHOTOGRAPHY Prices for professional photos range anywhere from $30 to $125. Most prom committees arrange for a photographer to take portraits of couples at some point during the evening. You will probably receive a pricelist beforehand. Don’t forget your cash or check! • LIMOUSINE RENTAL Renting a limo is an extravagant option, but it is very common. They could cost anywhere from $200 to $500. The best approach is to get a group and split the cost.

Savvy Baker turns three! n Savannah Baker celebrated her 3rd birthday with her friends during a rock star themed party at Apricot Girls Boutique in Sherwood. Savannah and her friends got the party started by dressing up in hot-pink and zebra print outfits. Next, the kids got their hair done, faces painted and the girls received mini manicures. After the makeovers, each girl hit the runway to strut their stuff and dance to some rockin' music. After a quick photo shoot, each guest decorated picture frames to take home. Savannah and her guests also created their own glittery lotions to take as a party favor. What a "Savvy" celebration! 1. Savvy Baker 2. Brayden Griffin 3. Savvy in her outfit from Apricot Girls 4. Chloe Bartlett turns four! n Chloe Bartlett celebrated her 4th birthday with her friends at The Painted Pig in Little Rock. Chloe and her friends had a blast painting pottery. In fact, a special birthday plate was painted for Chloe and each of her friends helped to decorate it by placing their fingerprints around the edges. After the painting was done, the kids gathered to eat birthday cupcakes decorated by Chloe’s mom and open presents.

Angels of Hope
The Angels of Hope class of 2009-2010 will receive their "wings" later this year to commemorate their service to the community. However, with or without the "wings" these girls are already angels to the people they have helped.
Blanche Murphy, Marge Anna Quinn and Sarah Johnson are three of the many young ladies who comprise this year’s Angels of Hope program. They are athletes, pageant competitors, members of the National Honors Society, student council, and to some, these young ladies are truly angels. Each year a select group of young ladies in the central Arkansas area participate in the Angels of Hope program as part of the 20th Century Club. The 20th Century Club provides no-cost housing for individuals undergoing cancer treatment in the central Arkansas area who would otherwise not be able to afford a place to stay. Members provide and share a meal with the patients and their caregiver once a week, talk with them, and shares their time and prayers with them. “It’s really rewarding,” Marge Anna said. The Angels are required to complete 25 hours of service by working directly with member mentors, visit with patients, as well as volunteering at local hospitals in the area of cancer treatment; however, most participating
Angels complete well beyond the minimum requirements. “I like helping with the dinners,” Blanche explained. “It’s cool because I get to spend time with the patients, one on one, which is something you don’t get to do with many other forms of community service.” The girls began their activities and volunteer work last year. Social events for the Angels and their parents were held throughout the year. The program is available to a limited number of girls entering their junior or senior year of high school. Each girl must be sponsored by a 20th Century Club member. The girls have volunteered at Baptist Health, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, and St. Vincent. The Angels have walked as a team In the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, helped with the CARTI Festival of Trees, and helped with the organization’s annual fundraiser, the Hope Ball. “Every year I try to see how I can help the community,” Sarah stated explaining that she feels good about the work she has been able to do as part of the Angels of Hope program. The organization also provides “treats” to the patients (bags filled with crackers, small bags of
cookies, hard candy, bottled water, etc. so they will have something to nibble on during treatments, or in-between). They also have a Blankets of Hope program, where members, caring people outside the club, and even Angels of Hope, can knit, crochet, or sew quilts for the patients. The end of the Angels’ term is marked with the Hope Ball. The Hope Ball is a gala event hosted by the 20th Century Club every year to raise money for the 20th Century Club’s Lodge. This year’s event will be held on March 13 in the Peabody Grand Ballroom. The evening includes both live and silent auctions, a delicious seated dinner, cocktails, and dancing until midnight. During the ball, the Angels will be presented with their mentors and fathers in the ballroom, and then driven home in a private limousine bus reserved exclusively for them. At a later date Blanche, Marge Anna and Sarah, along with the other participating Angels, will be presented their “wings” as a symbol of the hours of service dedicated to the program.
In a typical year, the 20th Century Club’s Lodge provides about 1,500 nights of no-cost housing to more than 240 patients. The lodge is more than a place to stay—it is a caring, compassionate environment that builds a bridge of hope over a chasm of worry. If you are interested in participating in the Angels of Hope program or the 20th Century Club call 501-351-6223 or visit www.hopeawayfromhome.org. SAVVY KIDS • March 2010
