savvyevents Juliana Berry donates her locks n Six-year-old Juliana Berry recently made a large contribution to the Locks of Love organization—10 inches to be exact! Juliana visited Pigtails and Crew Cuts in Little Rock to make her donation. After the stylist cut off Juliana’s pony tail, she shaped her remaining hair into a new stylish do! She was also presented with a certificate to commemorate her donation. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Their mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

Meet Vandy Nash. “As a mom, I teach kids the way I want my kids to be taught,” explained Vandy Nash, a 4th grade teacher at Indian Hills Elementary School in North Little Rock. “I try to teach the child, not just the subject.” Nash was recently named Arkansas Teacher of the Year for 2010. “It was complete secrecy,” Nash remembered. “I knew I was one of the finalists because there were more applications to fill out, but we didn’t know who won until they announced it. It was really cool.” Once her name was called, Nash recalled questioning the award. “I really thought they called the wrong name. I remember asking, ‘Are you sure you called the right teacher?’ I knew the people in the room, the people I was sitting with, are all phenomenal teachers. It was such a humbling experience.” With the award ceremony behind her, Nash will find out what being named the state’s Teacher of the Year is all about. “Nothing has slowed down,” she stated. And it won’t. Nash will travel the state to talk with other teachers about how things work in their schools. “I can’t wait to go out and see all the wonderful ideas and bring them back to our district.” Nash will attend the National Teacher of the Year ceremony in Washington D.C. She will have the opportunity to meet the President and represent all teachers in the state of Arkansas. Nash will also serve as a non-voting member on the Arkansas State Board of Education. Nash is the wife of Greg Nash, and the mother of Satchel, 12, and Sophie, 7.
Savvy Readers Want to Know… Q. What was your favorite book as a kid? A. I’ve read so many books it’s hard to narrow it down to just one. I do remember loving the Dr. Seuss books. Once I could read, I remember reading Dr. Seuss to anyone who would listen! Q. Where is your favorite place to take your family in central Arkansas? A. We all really love visiting the Lakewood Lake. We walk, run, play; it’s always a lot of fun! Q. If you won the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery how would you spend the money? A. I would pay for my kids’ college! (Laughs) Years from now the kids won’t remember a fancy new car, but we can create lots of memories during a fun vacation. Q. The last time you blew out your birthday candles what did you wish for? A. To go to Hawaii!
Q. If someone were to give you a pep-talk as you walked up the school steps every morning, what should they tell you? A. Be patient, be kind. Treat the students the way you want to be treated. And always remember, these kids are a blessing God gave you. Q. Do you play video games? If so, which one is your favorite? A. Of course I play video games! Over Christmas we got Wii Play and Wii Sing and we love it. I am an expert at Wii Sing’s Miley Cyrus, it told me so! Q. If you were to run into a former student 20 years down the road, what do you hope they will remember about you? A. I hope that they will remember that I love them and that I encouraged them. I hope they tell me, “Mrs. Nash, I’m so good at (whatever) because of you!”
Rose City Middle School’s Telisa Hadley wins Milken Family Foundation Award Telisa Hadley, a math teacher at Rose City Middle School, has been awarded a Milken Family Foundation Award for achievement. The Little Rock native said she was honored to be recognized for the award. “It was a surprise,” Hadley remembered. “We were told that the governor was coming that day and we were going to have an assembly, but I didn’t know I was going to receive the award.” The Milken Educator Awards were established by Milken Family Foundation Chairman Lowell Milken to provide public recognition and individual financial rewards of $25,000 to elementary and secondary teachers, principals and specialists who are furthering excellence in education. The monetary award is unrestricted, and Hadley has big plans for hers. Hadley has many goals for her teaching career. One of those goals is to make sure her students are successful on their exams. In fact, 100% of her geometry students scored advanced or proficient on their end of geometry test in 2007-2008, and 75% scored advanced or proficient in algebra on the end of Algebra I exam. Hadley is currently working toward her national board certification, which is no easy feat. Hadley is the wife of Roosevelt Hadley and the mother of Telia, 13. SAVVY KIDS • February 2010

INVITATIONS
Save The Date! No one will know about your perfect party if you don’t invite them! Invitations give your party guests important information, but are also a fun way to set the tone for your celebration. Many businesses can even personalize invitations with your child’s photo, name, age and party info. Invitations should be timed to reach the guests approximately two weeks before the party. This allows enough time for guests to “save the date” and also allows enough time to collect RSVPs before you make your final

DECORATING
Decorating for the Party Decorations add color and excitement. A little creativity goes a long way and you don’t have to spend a fortune. One of the easiest ways to decorate for a party is to purchase “party ware sets”, consisting of matching table cloths, plates, cups, and napkins, that convey the theme. Balloons are an easy and affordable way to decorate a party. Helium-filled balloons are readily available (party stores, florists, and grocery stores) and relatively inexpensive
costing less than $1 per latex balloon. Hang a fringe of streamers over the doorways or make a canopy over the cake table by attaching streamers to the chandelier and twirl them down to the corners of the table. Party stores sell confetti in nearly every shape imaginable. A couple sprinkles on the tables can add a festive look, but be careful around the food table or your guests will be eating it and be warned...you’ll be cleaning it up for weeks to come!
Cups, plates, napkins, balloons and decorations are just a few of the many things you will find at Party City to complete your perfect party! Party City is your one-stop-shop for party supplies. You will find over 100 party themes to choose from to fit anyone’s budget. Don’t forget the party favors! Party City has isles and isles of party favors, many of which are under $1! Party City: 11218 Rodney Parham in Little Rock, 501-223-4929; 4822 North Hills Blvd. in North Little Rock, 501-978-3154; 50 West Joyce Blvd. in Fayetteville, 479-571-2147 .

PHOTOGRAPHER
Strike a Pose! If you’re like most parents, you want photos of your children…tons of photos! Looking back on special occasions makes us smile, cry, and sometimes makes us laugh out loud. Enjoy your child’s party and worry less about getting photos. Hiring a photographer to photograph your child’s party will be one of your greatest investments. You are sure to end up with beautiful, professional-quality photos of your child’s party that will last forever while getting to actually experience the excitement of the celebration.
Remember to ask a few questions before hiring a photographer. Will the photographer be bringing large equipment? Will they stay for the duration of the party? Are there different photo packages to choose from? Have they ever photographed a similar event? Also, be sure to visit the photographer’s Web site. Photographers display their best work on their sites so if the photos aren’t up to your standards or aren’t of your taste, look to another photographer.
When the business that would eventually become Studio 1 began almost four years ago, it was built on a singular belief that professional photography shouldn’t have to break the bank. Studio 1 doesn’t have sitting fees or hidden charges and doesn’t limit what the client can choose from. Package prices include your studio and location time, retouch and free effects, and, of course, a great set of prints! Clients will always receive freebies such as additional prints, Facebook™ Discs, canvas prints, etc. Studio 1 Photography is located at 201 East Markham in Little Rock; 501-650-1806; studio-1-photo.com.

ENTERTAINMENT
Entertain Us! If you want to host a kids party that will be fun and memorable for your child and their guests, consider hiring some entertainment. The first thing to consider is the age range of the kids that you are looking to entertain. Usually, a parent would want entertainment not only for their child but for the guests as well. A professional entertainer would know how to make the birthday child feel special without making the other kids feel not included. If you choose to hire a clown or costumed
character, consider the person behind the make up. A seasoned professional will know how to calm a child’s anxieties very early on and bring the group together into the fun zone. Also, look for reviews or testimonials on the entertainer to see how others rate his or her work. Ask the performer these logistical questions before you commit: How much space do you need? Can you perform indoors and outdoors? Do you provide your own sound equipment? What do you need us to prepare for your act?
When it comes to hiring entertainment, in most cases, you get what you pay for, but with Future Sounds Mobile Music you get so much more! With over 20 years of experience, Future Sounds definitely knows how to get the party rockin’! They play the music you want to hear by the original artists and all the music is edited to remove offensive lyrics, which makes Future Sounds the perfect entertainment for your next event! Their equipment is compact enough to go anywhere. Future Sounds is located in Little Rock; 501-837-2540; 501-2211962; futuresounds@comcast.net.

Arkansas Children’s Hospital recently received a $10,000 donation to help fund programs in the Child Life and Education Department. The donation was made by KYE-YAC International, a non-profit organization created a little over a year ago by Kye Masino, an 11-year-old from Hot Springs. “We (KYE-YAC International) asked people to take their piggy banks or spare change to any Simmons First Bank branch to raise money for the kids at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. We also got donations from generous people, and from corporations and foundations,” Kye said. A check presentation was hosted in the front lobby of ACH, with several notable attendees, including 2009 “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and Governor Mike Beebe. Kris Allen heard about KYE-YAC and wanted to participate in and encourage KYE-YAC’s efforts. Prior to the check presentation, Allen, Kye and Peyton Rudisill, a KYE-YAC board member, visited with ACH patients in the hospital’s main

Their support and dedication to the children at Arkansas Children’s Hospital should set an example for others in communities across the state.” Kye and Peyton have big plans for the KYE-YAC organization in the future and said they hope to encourage more kids to become involved in bettering Peyton Rudisill and Kye Masino their community. “One of our main playroom, Camp Wannaplay. “We let Kris Allen goals is to get more kids involved in know what we were doing and asked him to be helping our generation achieve its best (locally, a part of it—he didn’t hesitate! Then we found nationally and internationally)—we are the fuout he had spent weeks there in the hospital ture and it looks bright - the sky’s the limit!” when he was a kid,” Kye explained. “I really believe all kids deserve a good life,” During the ceremony, Governor Mike Beebe says Kye. “I want to do my part to make that named Kye, Peyton and Kris Allen “cultural amhappen, while encouraging my friends and bassadors to the world.”“[Kye and Peyton] repothers our age to do the same.”
Each year KYE-YAC will raise money for one specific charity. Every penny raised goes to that charity. Kye and Peyton have begun research and are starting site visits to choose a new organization to raise money for this year.
