Happy New Year! As we ring in 2010, I can’t help but think of all of the wonderful things that have happened in 2009. Starting a new magazine is a lot to take on, and over these past few months Savvy Kids’ advertisers and readers have given me and my staff a lot to look forward to in the New Year. Be on the lookout for more fun editorial features and great event coverage. Jack Ratliff is our Little Hero, Big Heart feature this month. At just nine years old, Jack understands what it is to be a good friend. Jack met his friend Aaroyn when they were in Kindergarten. Aaroyn has autism and Jack has set out to help raise money for autism research. He has raised more than $800 this year alone holding bake sales at his school. I have a feeling we will be seeing some great things from this young man! With the holidays gone, cabin fever is sure to set in. Savvy Kids has compiled a guide to the Savviest Things to do with your Kids! Find tons of great ideas to get your family off the couch and into some fun! As always, be sure to sign up for the Savvy Kids Club by visiting our Web site: savvykidsofarkansas.com. Club members receive e-newsletters filled with upcoming events, the latest Savvy news, and of course the discounts and promotions from tons of central Arkansas retailers! While you’re on our site be sure to submit your kid’s upcoming events. Whether there is a birthday party in the near future, a team gathering, or school fundraiser, we want to hear about it! Fill out the form on the events section of our Web site and your kid’s event could be featured in the next issue of Savvy Kids!

Sugar Plum Ball benefits CARTI n Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institue’s (CARTI) Sugar Plum Ball was a perfect night out for dads and daughters to make wonderful holiday memories together. The ball is part of CARTI’s annual Festival of Trees and helps raise money and awareness for cancer. At the ball, each little girl received a tiara and was announced by masters of ceremonies Bob Clausen and Mike Francis of KARK-TV, Channel 4, and Mrs. Arkansas Nicole Knapp. After the sit-down dinner, catered by The Peabody, guests danced the night away with disc jockeys from Radio Disney. A good time for a good cause!

Got cabin fever? Get out of the house this winter! On the following pages Savvy Kids has compiled some of central Arkansas’ best places to visit with your kids. Have breakfast with the animals at the zoo; learn about the world around us at museums; or get active at the many high-energy play environments. Whatever your interests are, Savvy Kids has got you covered! Q. Can you tell readers a little about Arkansas Skatium? A. The Arkansas Skatium is the state’s only Ice and Roller Skating facility. We have two complete skating surfaces, one made of wood for roller skating, and one made of ice for ice skating. The facility originally opened in 1976 under the name of Skate Land. Through the years it has been referred to as the Little Rock Skating Arena, and now the Arkansas Skatium. Q. Do you offer party packages? If so, what is included? A. We offer party packages for small or large groups, starting at only $99. We supply all party supplies, drinks, ice cream, set-up, and clean-up. We even supply food items with some packages. Q. What classes do you offer and how often do they meet? A. We have Learn to Ice Skate Classes and Learn to Play Hockey Classes. Our Learn to Ice Skate classes meet twice a week, Tuesdays at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m. Our co-ed Learn to Play Hockey classes meet Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. FREE SKATES are given with all new enrollments! Q. Do you have open skate times? If so, what are they? A. Ice Skating: Friday evenings 7:30-10 p.m.; Saturdays 2-4 p.m., 4:30-6:30 p.m., 7:30-10 p.m.; and Sundays 2-4 p.m. Roller Skating: Friday evenings 7:30-10 p.m.; Saturdays 1-5 p.m., 7:30-10 p.m.; Sundays 1-5 p.m.

Q. What is Heifer Village? A. Located on Heifer’s campus in downtown Little Rock, Heifer Village provides an interactive glimpse of Heifer’s innovative work here in the United States and around the world providing livestock and training to families, focusing on sustainable, practical and cost-effective solutions to hunger and poverty. Just as an art museum might give a visitor a new sense of beauty, visitors to Heifer Village come away inspired to help build a better world. Q. What types of exhibits can families enjoy at Heifer Village? More than 80 exhibits offer visitors interactive ways to look at lives and challenges of people around the world. You can even practice your scanning techniques at our “check-out counter” to learn how companies of common household items are doing their part to improve the world. Then try your cooperation skills through the “Change for Change” board game that shows how successful economic development requires cooperation. Inspect our tabletop model of a small sustainable hillside farm to see how each area of the farm works together. Once you have completed your exploration of the lives of your world neighbors, make a stop at the Make a Difference Lab. Take a walk through interactive models of the workplace, a school and a household kitchen to glimpse ideas of small actions you can take to help end hunger and poverty. Complete your Heifer Village experience with a tour of the green building and restored wetlands, a meal at Café@Heifer or purchasing a unique fair trade earth- and artisan-friendly gift from Shop@Heifer. Q. Does it cost anything to visit? A. Admission into the center is free.

Q. Tell me a little about Sonshine Academy. A. We are a Children’s Activity Center that provides instruction in gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, tumbling, preschool gymnastics, and swimming. In addition, we offer birthday parties, Parent’s Night Out, group events, after-school care, camps, summer day camp and so much more. Also, we have both morning and afternoon/ evening classes to fit everyone's schedule. Q. Why should parents get their children involved in Sonshine Academy’s programs? A. It is a constant challenge for kids today to fight the sedentary lifestyle that is the consequence of computers, video games, and TV. Add to that the “fast food” nutrition that many families succumb to because of our “fast paced” lifestyle and we can have a recipe for disaster for our children. Sonshine Academy is a “children’s activity center.” We advocate the fundamentals of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, flexibility and nutrition in our program of gymnastics, dance, tumbling, cheerleading, & swimming classes. Come join us for some fun and fitness!

Carson Whitley turns 10! n Carson Whitley celebrated his 10th birthday with his friends at Gamersfame in Little Rock. Carson and his friends had the opportunity to play tons of games on Wii, Xbox, PS3, and more in the state-of-the-art entertainment facility. If the kids weren’t playing a game they could sit back and watch the action on one of the many large screen televisions. No matter whom the ultimate champion turned out to be, everyone had fun!
