A Letter From the Editor Here it is: our second October issue! Ever since the first, I’ve been waiting to do a ‘Beetlejuice’ (1988)-themed edition. ‘Beetlejuice’ is one of my favorite movies, and it features Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, a teenage Winona Ryder and the direction of Tim Burton. There’s something so comical and whimsical about the film, which has countless now-iconic moments. It’s no wonder that the ‘ghost with the most’ has remained popular throughout so many decades. Halloween (my personal favorite holiday) is also right around the corner. I love everything about the process of Halloween- from decorating to candy shopping, and everything inbetween. My favorite out of all the Halloween preparations was (and is) selecting and dressing up in a costume, assuming and alternate identity for a night. Costumes were and still are a way for me to express my interests. The perfect costume had the power to instantly boost my self-confidence and allowed me to direct the energy that could have been spent worrying towards those around me and having a good time. I try to achieve the same result with my regular outfits every day. This upcoming month, I challenge you to fearlessly put your personality on display- whether it be in the form of an outfit, Instagram post, or work of art. Speaking for most teenagers (as I have the insight associated with being one), it can be difficult to find an outlet for personal self-expression. If there’s any time to go all out, it’s Halloween, and it is in our disguises that we discover how to be comfortable with ourselves.

Before you dive into this issue, learn a little bit about this month's theme! The original, classic 'Beetlejuice' film arrived on the scene in 1988. Directed by the iconic Tim Burton, 'Beetlejuice' stars Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and a 16-year-old Winona Ryder. It follows the life and death of the Maitlands, who struggle to cope with the afterlife when the Deetz family moves into their house. In attempt to rid themselves of the Deetzes and enjoy death in peace, they seek the help of ‘Betelguese,’ a self-proclaimed ‘bio exorcist’ whose help comes with plenty of strings attached. Meanwhile, teenage Lydia Deetz befriends the Maitlands. The movie was a critical and commercial success and is now a cult favorite. In 1989, ‘Beetlejuice’ became an animated tv series that ran for four seasons and two years, with Burton serving as an executive producer. In the series, Lydia and Beetlejuice are friends who explore ‘The Neitherworld’ (afterlife) together. ‘The Neitherworld’ was not explicitly a part of the original movie. The most memorable phrase of both the movie and tv adaptation is used to summon Beetlejuice: one must simply say his name three times.

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

New York City, My Home by sk The place where I feel most at home is in New York City. Many people have a distaste for the city, and are repelled by its somewhat abrasive nature. To me, the streets of New York are as comfortable as my living room couch. Although I do not live in Manhattan, I am undoubtedly at home whenever I am there. New York City has not only been a backdrop for some of my earliest memories and best experiences, but a source of inspiration and a goal that I can aspire to. When I am in Manhattan, I am the most authentic version of myself. I relate this feeling to a quote by Maya Angelou: “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” In the city I feel free to wear whatever I want (whether it be a jacket covered in embroidered patches or a pair of culottes) without the associated pressure of feeling ‘judged’ by my peers. Even though an outfit may seem insignificant, it is a form of self expression that I can enjoy without criticism when I am in Manhattan. Little things like this enhance my self-confidence and makes me less susceptible to the negative opinions of others. Over the years, the way I interact with the city has changed, but my feelings about it have not. I can still remember being in New York City with my family as a child, and bonding with them over dinner, a

15

show, or a trip to the Bronx Zoo. As I discovered my love for theatre, I saw the city as the home of all of my favorite productions and performers. Although I’m not a fan of Midtown, I will still always make an exception for a Broadway show. Presently, as I take classes at prospective design colleges, New York City gives me a wealth of knowledge and career opportunities. No matter what the circumstance or stage of my life, New York City has always been there for me. Throughout my life, friends have come and gone and my interests have changed, but whenever I needed the city, it has accepted me. Each time I go to visit, I discover something new, whether it be a great coffee shop or a historic memorial that I hadn't noticed before. It amazes me that despite the fact that I know my way around and feel comfortable there, I will never run out of things to see and do. Manhattan has become a part of my identity over the years, and I am always proud to say that I live so close to my favorite place in the world. A home is something that you both grow up in and grow into. This sums up my relationship with New York. My appreciation for it has grown as I have. While homes make you feel safe and at peace, the city also excites and drives me. I look forward to the many experiences I will have as I find my way working and maybe even living in Manhattan. New York City is my past, present, and future; and for that I am extremely grateful.

15 Underrated Things to Love About Fall by Sami Pye

So, yes, we have our Starbucks drinks, pumpkin picking and sweater weather, but there is so much more that fall brings us to remind us that it is the greatest season ever.

1. Fall TV

Not only are all of the greatest shows back with new episodes, it’s pilot season!

2. Football Szn

Whether you’re a diehard fan, or just use games as an excuse for spirited Instagrams, there is nothing better than a home football game, even if you have no idea what the score is (or what is going on).

3. A New School Year

While nobody wants the summer to end, there’s nothing better than a fresh start and new classes, teachers and extracurriculars to drown yourself in. :’)

4. In-Between Weather Q: Shorts or Pants? A: Both!

5. Halloween Costumes

The only thing better than the greatest holiday of the year is preparing for it.

6. Beanies

They go with everything. They fix any bad hair day. They're the greatest.

7. Less Humidity

When the humidity goes down that means better hair days. (But, you should still wear a beanie.) 19

8. Back to School Supply Shopping

Not many people might be fond of back-to-school, but if there’s one thing everyone loves it is cool gel pens, colorful notebooks and new pencils.

9. Starbucks Pastries

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the underdogs of the Starbucks fall menu overthrown by pumpkin spice lattes. Thank you for being you, pumpkin bread.

10. Summer Clothing Sales So you can finally afford those shorts.

11. Changing Leaves

They’re gorgeous, fun to step on and super photogenic.

12. Cooler Evenings

Evening walks and nights out with friends just got that much better.

13. Homecoming

While not every school does Homecoming, there’s always one somewhere by you. Find a friend that has one and go…You will not regret it.

14. Halloween Movies

They’re the greatest and the ones meant for younger kids only get better as you get older. (See Sawyer top picks on page 7!)

15. Thanksgiving

It might be a slightly overlooked, present-less holiday, but you get the three greatest gifts all: food, friends and family. photo by Jiyang Chen Sawyer Magazine / 20

For me, I use it to channel my creativity on paper and give me another reason to stay in your room all day! This has become a therapeutic activity for me to indulge myself in, and it makes me so happy to see all of my sisters doing things for themselves whenever they need it!

stop buying your empowerment!

✨ đ&#x;Œ&#x;

đ&#x;Œš

One of the greatest areas for improvement in this time of risen feminism and self love is true empowerment. Everyone would like to believe that they know what the word means, but trying to grasp its true concept is harder than it may appear. It is our duty as women to empower our fellow females. However, this can only be done by empowering yourself first.Â

đ&#x;‘Ż

This is an idea very similar to loving yourself before loving others, but why is it important? Think of the biggest female influence in your life. Often times the answer is your mother, grandmother, sister etc, but I assume that in second place is your favorite actress, singer, or makeup guru. These second place spots hold a

đ&#x;˜?

greater importance than presumed. These icons are (hopefully) spreading female empowerment, feminism, body

#

positive messages, and other sentiments that encourage their fans to be their best selves. For example, I'm a believer in going au natural and ditching makeup products when possible. Leandra Medine, a well-known fashion blogger and author, is

responsible

for

influencing

these

opinions.

On

Leandra's

website,

ManRepeller.com, she published an article on why she does not wear makeup. After reading this article, (Which i highly suggest you do as well) I experienced a sudden epiphany and realized that the strongest source of empowerment comes from within.

$

It is crucial to never let your physical appeal define your motivation and skill. Just because one has sparkly eyelids and contoured cheekbones does NOT automatically suggest that their ability to empower is greater than that of a natural faced girl. In

đ&#x;‘ź

✨

đ&#x;‘ź

đ&#x;’Ť

fact, I have found that to be quite the opposite. While buying loads of fancy makeup and clothes can make you physically look and feel important or strong, nothing is more intimidating (in my opinion) than a girl who slays with her most natural self and displays her power in her personality. I am sure many of you have heard of (the incredibly talented and stunning) Alicia

*

Keys going makeup free. She disclaimed to many that it was not for attention, but in attempt to free herself of covering up. She is hoping that her

đ&#x;Œ&#x;

#nomakeupmovement becomes revolutionary, and promotes women of all age to not be afraid to uncover what they have been expected to conceal for so long. I support Alicia 100%. She is truly a girl on fire by inspiring girls to embrace themselves, ultimately leading to growth in their self confidence, which then results in the spread of empowerment. This domino eect enforces a positive mentality in women everywhere in need of more motivation and inspiration. So thank you to Leandra Medine, Alicia Keys, the

đ&#x;Œš

Suragettes, Angelina Jolie, Gloria Steinem, Malala Yousafzai, and many others for continually paving the way for female equality. As a few small ending disclaimers, I would like to say that I am in no way antimakeup and yes, the higher the heel or the darker the lip the badder the betch, but the only thing that can lead you in the direction of true self empowerment is your completely bare and natural self. That's why its called SELF empowerment SELF love SELF motivation. Stay lovely everyone, and remember to empower ya fellow females <3
