Hey guys! Sarah speaking. In case you haven’t noticed already, this issue’s theme is ‘Edward Scissorhands’ (1990), which is significant because the movie is cerebrating its 25th anniversary. ‘Edward Scissorhands' is one of my personal favorites because a. I’ve always loved Tim Burton’s whimsical direction, b. Winona and c. J-Depp. What more do you need? I think it’s pretty safe to say that the movie has stood the test of time. People -especially teenagers- can still relate to the feeling of being isolated and/or trapped in suburban life. In this issue, there are a lot of visuals that reflect the movie and the underlying theme of inclusion vs exclusion. In honor of the holiday season, I also made sure to incorporate nuances of Winter. This issue also spans January, specifically, New Year’s Eve. My resolution for Sawyer is to bring more voices into each issue so you can hear varying opinions and voices rather than only my own. I also want to start including fashion editorials more frequently, and we’re off to a good start in this issue! You’ll find a shoot called ‘Stars in Our Eyes’ featuring some of my best friends on page 35. It was an amazing experience, and I hope you guys love it as much as I do (if that’s even possible). Have a happy holidays and see you in 2016!

Pearl-Embellished Ornament by Sarah Tired of plain, solid-colored ornaments? Dress up your tree this year by arranging pearl beads on ornaments in dierent patterns!
What you will need: 1. A solid ornament 2. A pearl bead mix containing at least 2 sizes in coordinating colors. This one is very similar to the one I used. This 'caramel' mix also looks awesome. 3. A hot glue gun
1 Begin by using the glue gun to lay down a ring of glue around/directly below the cap of the ornament.
2 Place the largest size beads in the mix on the ring of glue, alternating colors. Here, I am alternating white, cream, and pale pink.
9
3
Place a large pearl bead directly underneath two in the original ring to make a trio. Use the picture as a guide and continue to alternate colors.
4 Glue a pearl to the bottom of the ornament, directly under the cap. Using the glue, draw a line from one of the beads you placed in step two to the pearl at the bottom.
5
For design #2, fill in the space between two of the lines with the smaller size of pearls in an alternating color; for example, I placed small white beads between the line of large cream beads and the line of light pink beads. Do this
Working quickly, place large beads of the same color along the line of glue. The color of the line of pearls should correspond with the alternating beads at the top. Continue around the ornament, alternating the color of the line of beads. Leave it be after this step for design #1.

9 Movies to Watch on Netflix This Winter by Sarah Kendric // ’Tis the season (to watch a movie)!
1
Love Actually (2003) R ‘Love Actually’ is the best of 10 romantic comedies mixed up into one and dipped in Christmas. It seems as though the 10 storylines would be confusing or hard to follow, but the plots eventually intertwine and are, on the whole, adorable. Best way to watch: While wishing to be that girl Joanna.
11
2
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) R Written and directed by John Hughes, this movie is a classic mix of comedy and heart. It’s technically a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie, but the snowy setting and theme of trying to get home to family translate nicely over to Winter.
3
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) PG ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ is obviously and rightfully one of my personal holiday favorites. It does double-duty for both Christmas and Halloween (although, granted, director Henry Selick officially deemed it a Halloween movie) and if you haven't seen it yet, you kind of need to get on that. Tim Burton’s genius does not disappoint. Best way to watch: Yelling “what’s this? what’s this?” at all your holiday decor (or is that just me?).
4
White Christmas (1954) NR They’re called classics for a reason. White Christmas is the kind of movie you play in the background while you put up a tree/bake something/drink hot chocolate. There’s singing! There’s dancing! There’s incredible costumes and visuals! White Christmas is definitely a spectacular and definitely worth your time. Best way to watch: Trying desperately to reach through the screen and steal every item of clothing worn.
5
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) R Hugh Grant appears for the second time on this list in an adaption of Helen Fielding’s novel of the same name, which is a reinterpretation of Pride & Prejudice. Bridget Jones is relatable in so many ways in this rom-com about a single woman trying to find/figure out love. This is one to watch with your best friends, single or otherwise.
6
Chalet Girl (2011) R Chuck Bass does it again. At first glance, this movie (starring Felicity Jones and Ed Westwick) is far from a must-watch. Even so, it’s a pleasant surprise (I promise) and good snow day material, especially for Gossip Girl fans. Best way to watch: After going out in the snow on a weekend afternoon.
7
The Ref (1994) R The Ref is a comedy-drama about a burglar who has the misfortune of holding hostage of a married couple debating divorce who will not stop bickering on the night of their holiday dinner party. The gunman assumes the role of the mediator, and the result is definitely comedic. The subplots are a little shaky and borderline unnecessary, but on the whole, ‘The Ref’ is worth the watch.
8
Trading Places (1983) R Two (blatantly racist and highly unlikeable) brokers place bets on a homeless hustler’s ability to replace a snobby executive, causing the two to ‘trade places’ financially. Trading Places’ is full of laughs and memorable one-liners, especially from Eddie Murphy. In case the trading floor ending confuses you as it did me, see this NPR article.
9
In Your Eyes (2014) NR The premise of this Independent romantic drama is that two apparent soul mates share a metaphysical connection, which results in them becoming close despite their geographical distance. It’s smart, symbolic, and while half of the movie is set on the snow-covered east coast, the other half is set in sunny New Mexico- just in case you’re tired of seeing snow. Best way to watch: On a lazy morning with a cup of tea.

Technology’s Role in the Future of Fashion Ever since their invention in 1984, 3-D printing technology has grown in functionality and popularity. Many believe that 3-D printers are the third coming of the industrial revolution. One of 3-D printing’s many uses is in the world of fashion. Several designers such as Iris van Herpen view this new technology as an innovative and sustainable way to produce and use unique textiles in their deigns. Accessories such as eyewear and jewelry also employ 3-D printing as a new manufacturing technique, which excites consumers. At this year’s London Fashion Week, models walked the runway wearing 3-D printed shoes designed by Julian Hakes. Larger companies such as Adidas have also begun to experiment with 3-D printed shoe soles. Printable materials are no longer limited to just plastics- flexible materials, custom knits, and fabrics such as nylon can now be printed. At NYFW, label Chromat partnered with Intel to create two innovative garments. One is a sports bra that responds to the wearer’s body temperature and levels of perspiration. When the wearer begins to heat up or sweat, the bra uses a 3D printed fiber that opens its vents to let in air. The other garment is an ‘Adrenaline Dress’ that uses 3-D printed panels (designed in partnership with Francis Bitonti) to sense the wearer’s levels of adrenaline. When adrenaline is detected, the framework on the dress expands around the wearer. More and more designers are beginning to exercise the potential of 3-D printing in their designs. The printers are also becoming more accessible to student and freelance designers. In the future, 3-D printing may result in a decrease in the cost of manufacturing garments and allow for more opportunities for customprinted clothing. It is very possible that we can design and print our own garments in the near future. What are your 3-D printing in fashion predictions?

What are social norms anyway? The glue that both unites and separates groups? A signifier of a silent agreement concerning good and bad, efficient and effective? What does it matter? It does matter. And it doesn’t. I subscribe to these norms on several maps and genres. I brood to the boastful and appeal to the popular, the over saturated. I know when to sit, where to sit, how to sip the coffee, and the right pronunciation of my order. I know when it's not double and when it's weak. I know the right utensils to use, where not to wear sneakers to, what side of the road to cross, and the right pant length. Yet the more these norms-these socially acceptable rules of engagement-are pressed on the visitor of choice or expat arrived, the more they distance the welcome. They remove the freedom and the space to really connect. They remove me.

Each picture it symbolizes the irony of beauty and not being able to reach it. The background of pictures is a beautiful rose thorn bush with the outline of Edward and Kim. This symbolize how beautiful they are but how nobody can recognize this because of the piercing thorns on the outside. A love that can never be because of the naive thoughts of the public, thinking that this love will only cause pain when in reality it causes less destruction for Edward himself. Beauty is only noticed when you stop noticing the negatives and start noticing the positives.

Johnny and Winona: A Gen-X Love Story Frozen in Time June 1989- Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp meet at the ‘Great Balls of Fire’ premiere. Winona is wearing all white and holding a bottle of Coke. Supposedly, when Johnny first saw her, time stopped. August 1989- The two begin to date. Winona is only 17 at the time. 1990- On February 26th, Johnny announces their engagement. Later that same year, they co-star in ‘Edward Scissorhands’ together. Johnny Depp tattoos ‘Winona Forever’ on his bicep. The phrase (and, later ‘Free Winona’) becomes a headline, a tagline, and a symbol of love and support for the forever-young star. 1993- Winona breaks up with Johnny. Some claim that Winona’s father disapproved of the relationship, more specifically, the 10-year age gap between them. Others chalk the breakup up to Winona’s inability to handle the stress concerning the role of the press in their relationship.
