COMMUNITY Greetings from Dr. Melone
Dr. Christine Melone, President/Principal
This is one of my favorite times of year with Easter signifying spiritual renewal, the emerging flowers representing rebirth, and the prospect of spring offering a sense of revitalization.
I am pleased to report that we have been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Helen Brach Foundation. The $25,000 Brach Grant for 2011-2012 will be utilized by the Learning Resource Department. Kindles and ebook novels will be purchased for use by Learning Resource students and plans are being made for a new program for incoming freshmen. The Catherine McAuley Honors Scholar program had their first meeting in March. There are currently 18 seniors, 19 juniors and 18 sophomore students in the program. Twenty-nine incoming freshmen were invited as well based on their entrance exam results. On April 27, during homeroom, we will be showing an extremely moving video on the dangers of texting and driving. The video “The Last Text” was produced by AT&T as part of their It Can Wait campaign. It is a powerful video that I hope you will ask your daughter about and I encourage you to watch as well. To view the video, visit www.youtube. com and enter “AT&T Don’t Text While Driving Documentary” in the search box. I wish everyone a safe and blessed Easter. Peace and Blessings, Dr. Christine M. Melone President/Principal

McAuley/Rice Mission Madness The Brother Rice and Mother McAuley Student Councils co-sponsored a “Mission Madness” basketball tournament on March 12 to raise money for charities. Twenty-six co-ed teams made up of students from each school competed for their favorite charity. This was the inaugural Mission Madness which was first envisioned by Brother Rice’s Student Council President Mike Flemming. Through team fees, admission fees and concession stand sales, the event raised more than $1000. All charities represented received a portion of the proceeds, with the largest donations being made to the winning teams’ charities. The first place team was Prestige Worldwide supporting the ACC Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Foundation; the second place finishers were the Windy City Wombats supporting Tobar’s Triumph; the third place team Mel Kiper’s Best Available supporting Barb’s Battle; and Swag Village supporting Mercy Home for Boys and Girls finished fourth. Additional charities included the 100 Club, ALS Association, Edmund Rice Camp, Kevin Dowling Scholarship Fund, Maeve McNicholas Foundation, Misercordia, Oak Lawn 9/11 Monument, Park Lawn, PAWS, Salvation Army, St. Baldrick’s, St. Martin’s Shelter, Special Olympics and UNICEF.

Illinois State Scholars The Illinois Student Assistance Commission has announced that three more seniors from Mother McAuley have been named Illinois State Scholars. The students, Megan M. Conroy, Olivia C. DiCola and Kristin M. Hillgamyer, received qualifying scores after taking the ACT this past summer. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission recognizes Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement based on ACT and/or SAT test scores and class rank. Approximately 10% of Illinois’ high school seniors are designated state scholars and receive a Certificate of Achievement for the accomplishment. With the addition of Megan, Olivia and Kristen, 39 members of the Class of 2011 were named Illinois State Scholars.
Kailyn Bates was recently honored by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program for her exemplary volunteer service. Kailyn has received a state-level Certificate of Excellence in the 2011 program which honors young people across America for outstanding community service activities. Kailyn was nominated for her work with the K. RIMM Foundation, an organization that brings computers access to children and senior citizens. This organization created a mobile computer laboratory by equipping buses with computers and visiting Chicago neighborhoods. This mobile lab allows residents to utilize the computers and learn new skills. It provides support to schools that do not have full-fledged computer laboratories and has pre-determined schedules for access at community centers, libraries, and schools. Nicknamed “The Green Machine,” the mobile lab introduces software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which are important to students and adults alike. Kailyn volunteers with K. RIMM an average of eight hours a week. Utilizing her own computer skills, Kailyn read about the Foundation online a few years ago and has been volunteering with them ever since. In addition, based on the number of volunteer hours, Kailyn qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to service their communities and their country. Prudential representative Elizabeth Weddington presented Kailyn with the Spirit of Community Certificate, along with a letter from President Barak Obama and a President’s Volunteer Service Award Certificate. The Prudential Spirit of Community Award program is sponsored annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. More than 310,000 young people have been considered for these awards since the program’s inception in 1995. The Certificate of Excellence signifies that Kailyn was among the top 10 percent of all applicants from Illinois in this year’s program. www.mothermcauley.org

Junior Class Day of Service The second annual Day of Service may have been on April 1, but the work the students did was no joke. The 320 members of Mother McAuley’s junior class, along with faculty and staff volunteers provided community service at locations across Chicago. The students volunteered at 25 different sites offering such help as preparing meals for the elderly, reading to children at day care centers and schools, cleaning toys and repairing bikes. The sites included: Benton House, Bronzeville Park Nursing Home, Gads Hill Center, Lake Katherine Nature Center, Mercy Hospital, Misericordia, Oak Lawn Children’s Museum, Pilsen Wellness Center - Food Pantry, Queen of Martyrs School, Ronald McDonald House - Comer Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House - Hope Children’s Hospital, Smith Village, St. Linus School, St. Margaret of Scotland School, St. Martin DePorres House of Hope, St. Mary of Celle Early Childhood Development Center, St. Pius Parish Food Pantry, Sward Elementary School, The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, and Working Bikes Cooperative. Mother McAuley initiated the Day of Service last year for the members of the junior class as their retreat day. After the service work, the students return to school for prayer and reflection. Service work is an essential dimension of the mission of the school and McAuley students annually volunteer more than 25,000 hours of service to their school and community.

Engineering Bridge Competition
2011Science Bowl Competition
Seniors Angelena Crispo and Tara Patrick participated in the 2011 Chicago Regional Bridge Building Competition held at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Both students designed and constructed a bridge using the specifications provided by the judging board. Angelena finished 20th and Tara finished 25th in the city competition. The competition was divided into three regions (left to right) Tara Patrick, Engineering Club moderator — Chicago City Regional, Mr. Bob Thomas and Angelena Chicago North Suburban Crispo. Regional and Chicago South Suburban Regional — with nearly 150 students competing overall. The object of the contest is for students to design, build and test efficient bridge construction given predetermined specifications. Model bridges are intended to be simplified versions of real-world bridges, which are designed to accept a load in any position and permit the load to travel across the entire bridge. Competition loading stopped at 50 kg. The bridge with the highest structural efficiency was declared the winner. The competition is designed to promote the study and application of fundamental principles of physics and help high school students develop “hands on” skills through bridge construction. By participating in the Bridge Building Competition students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications and then seeing them perform their function. They are also provided with an academically-oriented extracurricular activity which is recognized school-wide. Angelena and Tara are both members of Mother McAuley’s Engineering Club.
Mother McAuley hosted the Chicago Regional Science Bowl Competition sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE) on February 26. The National Science Bowl encourages high school students to excel in math and science. By raising the visibility of academic achievement in math and science, the program has succeeded in placing young people on par with their peers who excel in athletics. The Science Bowl is a fastpaced, exciting, and challenging competition. The Science Bowl consisted of 10 rounds of play with two teams answering “Jeopardy”-style questions in math, chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, earth science and general science. Each team was composed of four competitors and an alternate. Twenty-eight teams from 14 schools across the Chicagoland area competed in the Region 6 event. McAuley had three teams competing and was able to advance through seven rounds of competition. The DOE partnered with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) to bring this enriching competition to Hispanic serving areas across the country. The University of Illinois at Chicago chapters of the SHPE and the AHETEMS helped with the Science Bowl event at McAuley. Other sponsors included McDonalds Corporation, Caterpillar, Inc., and Xerox Corporation. Mother McAuley’s Science Bowl Team is moderated by science faculty members Kim Turnbull, head coach, and Dr. Roz Iasillo, assistant coach. The student members included seniors Lauren Barr, Yvette Cabada, Gabriela Herrera, Theresa Malanao, Julia Martin, Gabriela Perea, Ana Vazquez, junior Regina Engel and sophomores Katherine O’Brien, Danielle Hamzik, Ursula Magsayo, Angelica Ramirez, Jamila Sweis, Kamila Swietoslawski and Teresa Vazquez.
Bus service to Southwest Suburbs Beginning in the 2011 – 2012 school year, Mother McAuley and Brother Rice will offer bus service to and from the southwest suburbs including the Orland Park and Palos neighborhoods. The exact route and cost will be determined given the number of students who sign up for the service. Please contact Kathy Tomasek at 773-881-6518 for more information. www.mothermcauley.org

Trips Near and Far Field trips always provide experiential learning for students and the recent trips some students and faculty took are no exception. New York, New York - Mrs. Pat Haynes, accompanied by 22 theatre students, took New York by storm over Spring Break and attended six Broadway plays including “Spiderman,” participated in a theatre seminar, and saw the sites. The students also attended mass at St. Malachy’s, nicknamed “The Actors Chapel.” Boston and New York - Mrs. Kathy Gordon Davis and her budding art students traveled to Boston and New York for five whirlwind days over Spring Break. They visited the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, saw “Phantom of the Opera” and visited numerous historical sites in both cities. Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba - The 163 seniors enrolled in Spanish IV traveled to the north side of the city to visit Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba, a Spanish tapas restaurant. For most of these students it was their first experience with authentic Spanish cuisine. Students sampled tortilla espanola, goat cheese in tomato olio, stuffed mushrooms, patatas bravas, paella, and tres leches cake.
After lunch, the girls enjoyed live flamenco music and dance performance by some of the top flamenco artists in Chicago. Students study the history, art, music, literature, and customs of Spain in-depth their senior year. They were accompanied by teachers Peg Hughes, Janet Hansen and Rose Riccordino. Blair School - Social Science teachers Dorothy Grant-Wonders and Rita Fox accompanied the senior Little School teachers on a trip to Blair School - an early childhood special education facility. Blair faculty and staff introduced the student to all of the careers necessary in a special ed school. It was a true educational experience for the McAuley students to interact with the Blair students and observe the their faculty.
