On November 4, renowned author and psychologist Dr. JoAnn Deak visited Mother McAuley and met with student representatives, faculty, and parents. She spoke of the benefits of single-gender education and the differences in learning styles.

Dr. Deak confessed she was just as interested in coming to McAuley as we were in having her. She has traveled all over the world in her work and people always recognize the name Mother McAuley. She was interested in finding out if we could live up to our reputation as a leading all-girls school. After meeting with our student leaders, she was convinced. During her short visit, Dr. Deak confirmed what our alumnae, students and families have known for years – that Mother McAuley is unique, a diamond in the rough you might say. Our students excel in the classroom and our alumnae graduate as confident young women ready for the challenges of a global society. We are the only liberal arts high school in the United States. We take pride in being a single-gender school with a lasting reputation for excellence. Pat Byrne, class of 1976 and mother of four daughters, eloquently shares her thoughts on that intangible, irreplaceable McAuley experience.

FAMILY

As a Mother McAuley alumna, I was pleased when the first of my four daughters chose to follow in my footsteps. As a parent, I have been much more than pleased by her choice, and that of her younger sisters.

Pat Byrne ‘76 (far left) with three of her daughters.

I cannot recall when I last visited the school prior to the Open House I attended with my daughter. However, during that Open House, I experienced a comforting sense of familiarity. I was flooded with countless pleasant memories. Surprisingly though, to my adult eyes, the school seemed bigger – the halls wider, the classrooms larger and the campus more expansive than I remembered.

I realized it appeared larger as it was now empty of the classmates and faculty I associated with the school: the hallways crowded with chattering girls, the race from gym to the IPS lab in the East building and the teachers standing at the open doorways hurrying lagging students into their classrooms. In those moments, I recognized the value of my high school years beyond the obvious role of education. I knew the Mother McAuley experience would positively impact my daughters’ futures as it had my own.

While my daughters have proven to be different academic students, each has received a challenging Liberal Arts education. The school is equipped to address diverse learning styles and build self-confidence in the learner. Students are exposed to a variety of courses throughout their four years and can choose to pursue an area of interest such as art, music or technology beyond a single required class. Extra-curricular activities and clubs are numerous and promote like-minded girls acting on their interests and cementing friendships. McAuley Welcomes New Director of Development

Dear Alumnae,

This past August, the McAuley community welcomed Tom Geraghty as the new Director of Development. Tom’s main focus will be to raise financial support for the school through the annual fund, special events, planned giving and private donations. If you would like to get in touch with Tom, he may be reached at tgeraghty@mothermcauley.org.

Mother McAuley is blessed to have you as such exceptional role models. Young girls witness the confidence that our alumnae possess and strive to obtain the same success that you have achieved. In January, we experienced a successful Entrance Exam Day because of your example. We welcomed an enthusiastic group of young women who are eager in calling McAuley home for the next four years. You are a big part of why they made this choice. I would like to thank each of you for being such great symbols of what a lifetime advantage can mean, and for remaining a vital part of the Mother McAuley community. Thank you for your continued support and God Bless, Dr. Christine Melone, President/Principal Inscape is a publication of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. @McAuleyAlumnae

Welcome Letter from Director of Development I am excited about being here at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School as the Director of Development. I grew up in Oak Lawn, so I am very familiar with McAuley. In fact, my youngest sister and several of my cousins graduated from McAuley. I was well aware of the strong reputation of the school as an academic power house, as well as the Mighty Macs athletic program’s success. I wasn’t aware of the total number of alumnae and how large a number it is. The school has the unique history of having an alumnae association consisting of graduates from the original school site, St. Xavier Academy and the current site, Mother McAuley. Together, these two groups of alumnae total over 24,000. Just think of the networking possibilities that this organization possesses. I hope to use that network to increase our enrollment numbers, enhance the alumnae association, and build our endowment to sustain the mission of this Mercy school. I joined the staff on August 2, 2010. I have twenty-one years of experience in Catholic high school education My experiences include teaching, coaching, mentoring, administration, recruitment, admissions and fund raising. I have a strong love for Catholic education. I want to make sure that Catholic education is available and affordable for all. The Director of Development position has many responsibilities. I think the primary responsibility is raise revenue to support the school. This involves asking you for your support. I invite you to invest in your alma mater. In my very short time here at the school, I have already heard from many alumnae that they have never been asked to make a gift to the school. Please consider this my first of many requests. Please make a gift to the Annual Fund. You have already received this year’s Annual Fund Appeal letter. Please give. I will also be reaching out to individuals to ask for major gifts. The hardest part of reaching out is making cold calls since I haven’t had the chance to meet you beforehand. I really do look forward to developing strong relationships with our alumnae. It is not just what you can do for the school, but what we can do together so that you feel good about making an investment in McAuley. Ultimately, it is about continuing on your school and ensuring its viability. It is a part of your legacy. Best regards, Tom Geraghty 3

2010 Gala

The name Celebration, given to Mother McAuley’s largest fundraiser, is all encompassing. The literal definition of celebration is the essence of what Mother McAuley’s premier event stands for: to show happiness that something special has happened by eating and drinking together or playing music. At Mother McAuley’s annual Celebration Endowment Fundraiser, we celebrate our honorees, donors, guests and our school community as a whole.

Celebration

The McAuley community will once again celebrate individuals Save the Date 4•30•2011 who exemplify the charism and values of Catherine McAuley, carry on the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, and demonstrated an ongoing commitment to our mission. The Bigane Family will be honored with the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award and Ms. Marion McFarland ’55 with the Distinguished Alumna Award. The Bigane Family – Mrs. Edward Bigane, Anne Bigane Wilson ’76, Katie Bigane Larson ’78, Sheila Bigane Bauschelt ’78, Meg Bigane ’82 and Julie Bigane Pollard ’84 – has been a part of the Mother McAuley community for more than 30 years and has a long history of community involvement beginning with Mr. Edward Bigane’s company, Bigane Paving.

Celebration 2010 honored two very deserving individuals – Archdiocese of Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller and Ms. Laura Shallow, class of 1975. The Catherine McAuley Leadership Award was presented to Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller for his support of the mission of the school by providing a quality Catholic liberal arts education for young women. Board of Trustee Chair Nancy Hill-Davis said, “We at Mother McAuley commend Bishop Gustavo for his tremendous contributions to our community, our school and most importantly the girls of McAuley.” Ms. Laura Shallow was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award for more than three decades of service to McAuley, most recently as the chair of the Board of Trustees. “Laura fosters the mission of the Sisters of Mercy and of Catherine McAuley in every action. Laura also embraces a true commitment to providing a quality secondary education for young women in a catholic educational community. Mother McAuley is a better place today and will be a better place tomorrow because of Laura,” said Mr. Michael Nielsen, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees.

According to Kelly Doyle Coakley ’94, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney, “I discovered who I was and what I was capable of accomplishing at McAuley. I feel compelled to do what I can to ensure that other young woman can have the same foundation McAuley afforded to me. Once I began talking to other attorneys who graduated from McAuley we all agreed on one thing, we all benefited from an all-girls education and its strong foundation enabled us to be the attorneys we are today.” The Law Society would like to thank the The Law Offices of Jeffrey Kroll and Law Society President Heather Begley for generously underwriting the cost of our first networking event in January at O'Callaghans. Jan Malloy Scholarship for Spirit and Community Service The Jan Malloy Scholarship for Spirit and Community Service is in honor of Jan Malloy, who served as the Alumnae Coordinator for eight years, becoming an integral part of the McAuley family. The scholarship was started by Jennifer Costello Fortner ’94 and her husband PJ, in memory of Jan who died of ovarian cancer on September 3, 2009. The theme of Jan’s scholarship is “Sticks in a Bundle, Cannot be Broken.” Last year, we awarded a $500 scholarship to Emily Oliver ’13, for her design of the scholarship logo. The theme is representative not only of the support Jan received from family, friends and the McAuley community during her18-month challenge with cancer, but also in her belief of the strength of the alumna connections to the school. Jan believed that anything could be accomplished when people worked together toward a common goal. One of the things she enjoyed most about her role was to see a need or an opportunity at McAuley and connect with an alum who might also benefit from the experience. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance, not only for those students who are in good academic standing, but also primarily for those who have a financial need. This year at McAuley, there are many students who are in jeopardy of not being able to complete their education due to the recent decline in our economy. As you think of your wonderful time at McAuley, imagine how you might have felt if you would have had to leave in your sophomore or junior year due to an unfortunate financial circumstance.

Student Testimonial I believe that receiving the Jan Malloy Scholarship for Spirit and Community was truly a blessing. Both my mother and I are extremely grateful because senior year is expensive and having been awarded this scholarship, our expenses have been decreased. Additionally, I was very happy to meet the alum I interviewed, Kate Kelly ’86, at the college fair last year. She reenforced the fact that McAuley does prepare its students for the ‘real world’. I am an active member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, and Philosophy Club. I plan to major in Nursing and have applied to several schools in Illinois. Thank you again for blessing me with the opportunity to continue my education at McAuley. I hope to give back to the foundation when I am an alum. God bless, Christine ‘11

Our goal, as the scholarship committee, is to raise enough money each year to build on the number of scholarships we can award. Last year, we were fortunate to be able to give two, $1000 scholarships. Our hope this year is to be able to award three. The “Mother McAuley Alumna” pillows were designed with that intention in mind. In order to accomplish this goal, we need to sell a minimum of 250 pillows. A portion of the proceeds of each pillow goes towards Jan’s scholarship. Your purchase of an alumna keepsake pillow helps ensure the continuation of single-gender education for young women at McAuley. For more information about purchasing a pillow please contact the Alumnae Office at 773-881-6565.

Alumnae help mentor students in new LSI Program In line with the school’s mission of preparing students to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately and assume roles of Christian leadership, Mother McAuley has established the “To Lead, To Serve, To Inspire” (LSI) Leadership Academy. The 22 students selected to participate in this inaugural academy are involved in several McAuley clubs and organizations including: Student Ambassadors, UNITY, National Honor Society and Student Council. The LSI participants not only learn how to recognize their own leadership style, but also to use these skills to serve and inspire others toward having a positive impact on their school and community. Students are challenged to define how they see themselves, how they see others and how others see them. LSI incorporates several methods for this evaluation including The Johari Window, a tool used to describe the process of human interaction, and the MyersBriggs Personality Assessment. These methods were introduced to the students during a three week workshop last summer and reinforced through guest speakers and field trips. The guest speakers included Maureen Ryan ’82, lawyer and owner of her own consulting firm, Marge O’Connell Nykaza ’72, founder of Harmony, Hope and Healing, and Molly Meade McGowan, McAuley Liturgy/Service Coordinator. Additionally, the

students visited WGN TV Studios where they met executive producer Sandy Pudar ’95 and took a service field trip to Deborah’s Place Shelter. McAuley Counselor, Kathy Farrell ’82, serves as Facilitator for the LSI Program and is assisted by Counselor Gloria Chapa-Resendez. Funding for the Academy was provided through a grant from the Helen Brach Foundation. President/Principal Dr. Christine Melone and Grant Writer Sister Elizabeth Pardo, IHM, were instrumental in securing the funding from the Brach As part of their leadership training, the 22 LSI students visited WGN TV Studios and Foundation to met alumna Sandy Pudar (back center). develop this unique program.

Mardi Gras Party a Success

Mother McAuley has joined Tix4Cause.com— an innovative ticket exchange website— to offer a novel way for alumnae to donate.

On February 25, Mother McAuley High School hosted its first-ever Mighty Mac Mardi Gras Party at 115 Bourbon Street. The event welcomed community, alumnae, spouses and friends.

The Tix4Cause website provides an online platform where ticketholders donate unwanted tickets to Mother McAuley. Buyers then purchase these tickets, often at very reasonable prices, and Tix4Cause passes 100% of the proceeds onto McAuley.

Proceeds from the event benefitted McAuley’s student clubs, organizations and sports programs. The event was sponsored by the St. Xavier Academy/Mother McAuley Alumnae Association.

However, the success of our partnership with Tix4Cause depends on you, our donors. Don’t let those unused sports, theater or music tickets go to waste— instead, place them for sale on Tix4Cause. Or if you are looking to attend an event, check McAuley’s Tix4Cause page first and create a win-win exchange. “Finding new sources of donations to help fund our mission is always a top priority,” said Tom Geraghty, Director of Development. “Our affiliation with Tix4Cause makes this simple with 24/7/365 access to donations that we might not have received otherwise.”

A festive group of McAuley supporters celebrated Mardi Gras Mighty Mac-style at 115 Bourbon Street. The event raised money for student organizations and programs.

The link for McAuley’s Tix4Cause is available at www.mothermcauleyalums.org.

Mardi Gras committee members included Michelle Nugent ’95, Tiffany Kania Hunt ’94, Kellyn Doyle Coakley ’94, Katie McKeon Lopez ’94 and Sallie Wiechern King ’68.

Class of 1960 Celebrates 50 Years On September 24, 2010, in conjunction with Mother McAuley’s annual Mercy Day celebration, the graduates from the Class of 1960 returned to commemorate their 50th reunion. The women enjoyed a day of celebration and festivities during their visit. The Class of 1960 attended the student Mercy Day assembly, followed by a luncheon and tour where they saw "new" improvements such as the auditorium, main gym, English wing, and Mercy Chapel – spaces that did not exist when they were McAuley students. The afternoon ended in the Mercy Chapel as songs of McAuley High filled the room. These women were Mother McAuley’s first graduating class to complete all four years in the current building. As freshmen they had joined the Classes of 1959, 1958 and 1957, who began their studies at St. Xavier Academy. The Class of 1960 during their 50 year reunion.

The Alumnae Office hosted a networking More than 25 alumnae event for alumnae in downtown Chicago. from various professions and graduating years attended the event.

The outing included nine holes of golf at Stony Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn, followed by a dinner buffet, raffle baskets, split the pot, three grand prize cash raffles and dance music by DJ Jim Burke. In addition to golfing, proceeds are generated through the support of local sponsors. McAuley would like to thank the following donors for their generous support:

President/Principal Dr. Christine Melone updated alumnae about what is going on at McAuley today, academic highlights, information about clubs/organizations and the athletic program, and the growing need for financial assistance. A discussion followed that allowed alumnae to speak about their McAuley experience and how it has helped them get to where they are today in their lives. Guests were able to share ideas about what they are looking for from their alma mater including social/ networking, mentoring students, and becoming involved with the alumnae board.

Scholarship News Hank and Virginia Murphy Endowed Scholarship Francie Murphy ’73, has made a charitable gift of $10,000 to establish the Hank and Virginia Murphy Award for a senior student who has demonstrated a serious commitment to education and who has the academic standing of an “A” average. Francie wants to assist a senior student whose family is struggling to meet their tuition payments. The award was established in honor of her mother and father who often struggled financially to pay her tuition when she was a student, yet sacrificed because they wanted her to receive a McAuley education. Francie currently enjoys a fantastic career and runs a successful business, Francie Murphy Associates, a public relations firm in California. She attributes much of her success to the foundation she received as a Mother McAuley student.

Class of 1991 alumna Tara Poremba, a talented athlete, Marine and police officer, recently participated in the History Channels reality TV series Top Shot, with 16 of the nation’s most skilled marksmen in a quest to win $100,000. But Poremba was in for a surprise when she showed up for taping in California to find out that she was the only woman selected out of thousands of applicants. “I will admit, at first I was nervous, I didn’t know how the men would take to having a woman in their house, but my fears were subsided after a few days, and I got to know these guys, they were an amazing bunch of guys. I felt like one of the competitors. They treated me like one of the guys. It was almost like a brother/sister relationship.” After graduating from Mother McAuley, she decided to follow her oldest brother, Sean and enlist in the Marine Corps in 1991 after the Gulf War. She was stationed at Parris Island, S.C., in boot camp when she fired her first weapon. After six years in the Marine Corps reserve, Poremba became the first woman in the history of the Chicago Police Department to become “Top Gun” of her graduating class. A couple of years ago, she was also awarded “Top Gun” of the FBI Firearms Instructor School at the Great Lakes Naval Station. About 25 officers from 18 different agencies throughout the Midwest

cut short on the show when she had to make the hard decision to leave to take care of her sick father, Martin Walsh. Sadly for Poremba, her father lost his battle with cancer and never got to see the show. But in his place, family and friends have consoled Poremba by gathering with her each Sunday night at 9 p.m. to watch the show together. On Father’s Day, they gathered at Wrong’s Tap on Western Avenue, her father’s favorite watering hole, to salute him and watch “Top Shot.” Poremba said her life hasn’t changed much since a reported 2.1 million Americans began watching her fire a weapon, but the show has meant a great deal to her and her family. “Nothing has really changed too much for me with the exception that the show really has been a great reason for my family and friends to get together every Sunday,” she said. “I have never seen my family so much. It’s been wonderful. I learned so much through this experience, not only about the weapons and history of the weapons, but also I learned a lot about myself. I had a lot on my plate, and I’m proud that I was able to fight through it and still be able to focus on the challenges. I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity. I also will never regret my decision to leave and be with my family.”

We prayerfully remember dear faculty, staff and family members...

Mary Laughlin, McAuley Director of Student Records, passed away on June 12, 2010 after a long illness. Mary was a dedicated worker who had been a part of the McAuley community for more than 20 years. A “behind the scenes” member of the Information Services Department, we will forever remember her and the important work she did for our students and families. Mary loved Mother McAuley and the students, and often referred to this as her second home. She was a multi-talented woman who loved to cook, sew and was a true artist. She had a quick smile and matching sense of humor.
