I welcome all of you to the 2010-2011 school year with the fondest regards. Once again I look forward to a successful year full of grace, spirit and energy.
Each year as a community we follow a particular liturgical theme. This year’s theme is Go Make A Difference. At the opening all school liturgy, I asked the students, faculty and staff to reflect on how they will make a difference this year. I challenged everyone to ask themselves each day – Did I make a difference? It is my hope that each of us will use our hands, minds and hearts to make a difference through service to our school, community, church, family and friends. Most of the time when we are doing something that makes a difference we are using our hands. Within our community we have more than 2800 hands that do the work of learning, service, faith and kindness. Collectively with all these hands we have great potential, ability and power to truly make a difference. Last year I held a morning prayer group where students, faculty and staff were invited to join me in the chapel for a short prayer to start our day. This year, we will be having community prayer in the rose garden where everyone is invited to join me in saying the rosary. All who attend will receive a special rosary made by Sister Mary Eleanora, RSM. Together we can use our hands to pray and reflect on the mysteries of our faith and life. Sincerely, Dr. Christine M. Students Take Advantage of Summer Offerings Although the calendar may have read July and the temperature tipped 100 degrees, the students at McAuley did not let that stop them from attending a variety of summer enrichment offerings. Students took advantage of technology, leadership, language and writing courses offered both on-and-off campus, along with the art, theatre and sports camps offered at McAuley. Geek Squad Summer Academy Kicking off the summer was the Geek Squad Summer Academy for young women in 7th through 12th grades. During this three-day camp, students experienced a wide assortment of computer-based subjects while having fun learning about technology. Geek Squad Agents taught students the basics of computer building, networking, digital imaging, and internet communication all through hands-on, interactive learning. A few of the week’s highlights included Band Hero, Wiilympics, and music composition on Macs.

Computer Programming at SXU A second technology opportunity was sponsored by Saint Xavier University and introduced programming concepts and implementation to 18 students from McAuley. Using the program Scratch, each student was able to incorporate dialogue, music, scenery, photos and games to create her own digital project. (continued on next page)

In addition, the students learned to create wikis and blogs; discussed issues concerning social networks and computer etiquette; and met women who currently work in computing fields. The week long workshop was lead by Saint Xavier computer science professors Dr. Florence Appel and Dr. Jean Mehta and was made possible through a grant the University received from the National Science Foundation. The McAuley students who participated in this inaugural workshop were Kathryn Barnes, Darien Bell, Kayla Collins, Tara Dempsey, Mary Joan Evans, Sinead Finnerty, Emeri Gray, Raeshawn Pierce, Delilah Hansen, Maura Joyce, Amber Lacey, Kathleen McGivney, Lynn Mornes, Maggie O’Keefe, Devin O’Malley, Janae Putman, Jacqueline Robertson and Giselle Villasenor. To Lead, To Serve, To Inspire In line with the school’s mission, McAuley established the “To Lead, To Serve, To Inspire” (LSI) Leadership Academy. The 22 LSI participants learned to recognize their own leadership style and to use these skills to serve and inspire others toward having a positive impact on their school and community. Through the Leadership Academy, students worked on developing their full potential physically, emotionally, and academically; communicating with others with increased understanding, skill, and respect; and using their unique skills, talents, morals and values to make sound decisions as a leader. These skills were reinforced through guest speakers and field trips. The guest speakers included Maureen Ryan ’82, lawyer and owner of her own consulting firm; Marge O’Connell Nykaza ’72, founder of Harmony, Hope and Healing; Molly Meade McGowan, McAuley Liturgy/Service Coordinator; and Danielle Cortes DeVito ’92, a paramedic, advocate for the American Heart Association and Mrs. Chicago 2009. Additionally, the students visited the WGN TV Studios were they met executive producer Sandy Pudar ’95 and took a service field trip to Deborah’s Place Shelter. Senior Liliana Jimenez was selected to spend a month in France and Spain this summer as part of the The Experiment in International Living (EIL) program. She traveled with a small group of other high school students from around the world. While in Europe, the students experienced daily life firsthand by staying with a host Liliana Jimenez family and engaged directly in the culture through community service, language study and travel. “This once in a lifetime opportunity enabled me to practice my French and Spanish and learn about cultures other than my own. During the trip I bartered in markets, saw the Tour de France, visited the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral, and even relaxed on the beautiful beaches,” said Liliana. As part of the experiential learning and language immersion, the students involved with EIL build leadership and communication skills, gain essential international experience, increase their self-confidence, and enhance global awareness. Columbia College Creative Writing Program Junior Alexandria Ramirez spent eight weeks in a creative writing job-training program for teens at Columbia College. Only 50 students are chosen for this selective program which is run in conjunction with Gallery 37’s After School Matters. As part of the program, students attended a range of writing workshops where they learned to use oral storytelling, reading and recalling, and word game in order to improve their writing skills. “Girls will be Girls” Author to Speak to the McAuley Community on November 4. Mother McAuley is proud to announce that esteemed author and speaker Dr. JoAnn Deak will join us on November 4 to share her research on the challenges girls face in today’s society and provide insight on how we as educators and parents can empower them. Author of “Girls Will Be Girls: Raising Confident and Courageous Daughters,” and “How Girls Thrive,” Dr. Deak has spent more than thirty years as an educator and psychologist, helping children develop into confident and competent adults. The latter half of that period has also focused on working with adults, parents and teachers in their roles as guides or ‘neurosculptors’ of children. Dr. Deak began “Every interaction a child has, her career as during the course of a day, an elementary teacher and head influences the adult that child will become.” - JoAnn Deak, Ph.D. of the science department. She soon learned the complexity of dealing with the many brain and motivational patterns represented by the diverse students in her classes. This led to her work at Kent State University, one of only three universities in the United States to have a specialty in Preventive Psychology at that time. Her doctoral work focused on how to assess those environmental, school and family patterns that lead to the healthy development of children and, conversely, those patterns that cause issues, problems and disabilities. Dr. Deak has been an advisor to Outward Bound, a past chair of the National Committee for Girls and Women in Independent Schools, on the advisory board for the Center on Research for Girls [Laurel School], for the Seattle Girls’ School, Bromley Brook School, the Red Oak School, Power Play and GOAL. She consults with organizations and schools across the United States. She has been awarded the Woman of Achievement Award by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, was given the first Female Educator of the Year Award by Orchard House School, and the Outstanding Partner for Girls Award from Clemson University. She has been named the Visiting Scholar in New Zealand, the Visiting Scholar for Montessori Children’s House and has been the Resident Scholar for the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute in Colorado Springs for the past five years. National English Honor Society Chapter The English Department is proud to announce that McAuley has been accepted into the National English Honor Society (NEHS), a national organization for high schools that demonstrate excellence in the field of English. Admittance into the prestigious organization is based on academic performance of students and the prowess of the institution. The McAuley Chapter will promote the NEHS goals of recognition, encouragement, and growth to the McAuley community for past or current accomplishments. NEHS moderator Ms. Erin Macke along with Mrs. Ginny Murphy and Mrs. Elizabeth Hayes, advisory council members, will be extending invitations for membership into the national organization to faculty, alumnae, and students based on their achievements in English and overall academic performance at McAuley.

Go Make a Difference: Donate a Bike To kick-off this year’s theme of “Go Make a Difference,” Mother McAuley will be hosting a Bike Drive on Saturday, September 25 from 9 am to Noon in the East Parking Lot. The purpose of the bike drive is to support Working Bikes Cooperative, a nonprofit in Chicago that refurbishes used bicycles and donates them to people in need. Each year, Working Bikes gives away more than 5,000 bicycles locally and internationally. In the countries to which Working Bikes ships, a bicycle can often mean the difference between work and unemployment. Working Bikes distributes nearly 500 bicycles and wheelchairs in the Chicago area alone: to City programs, refugees and day camps. For more information, visit http://workingbikes.org. Radon Poster Contest Winner
Faculty In-service Day
Freshman Mia Morgan is one of three finalists in the state-wide radon poster contest. Her poster was among more than 320 entries in the contest sponsored by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the American Lung Association (ALA-IL), the University of Illinois Extension Office and the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago. Each of the winning students received a $100 savings bond and will compete in the 2011 National Radon Poster Radon Poster by Mia Morgan Contest sponsored by the National Safety Council in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The poster contest is designed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas and to increase the number of homes tested for radon. The winning national poster will be unveiled at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in January 2011.
On August 16, the faculties of Mother McAuley and Brother Rice High Schools held a joint in-service on “Innovations in Education” led by keynote speaker Louis Mangione. The energetic presentation focused on integrating the science of learning with the art of teaching. Mr. Mangione demonstrated the use of The Invisible Map and the faculty participated in activities that could be incorporated into the classroom.

EcoMacs Earn Two 1st Place Awards
Students Participate in Holocaust Remembrance Day
English faculty member Elizabeth Hayes (left to right) and two World Literature students, Nicole Ramos and Jessica Kelley, attended Mayor Daley’s Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Illinois Holocaust Memorial and Education Center. The day included a candle-lighting ceremony with local Holocaust survivors, tours of the museum, and a luncheon. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

The members of the EcoMacs Club were recently honored at a White Sox Game for their work with Operation Haiti.
The McAuley EcoMacs are the recipients of $5,000 as winners of the True Hero program, based on their Operation Haiti project which involved construction of a biodiesel processor for a school in Pichon. True Hero, Inc., grants cash awards to high school, college and qualified non-profit community youth organizations that sponsor service trips and volunteer activities for students. These cash awards enable more schools to continue their service learning programs and offer a life changing experience to next year’s class of talented students. With the award money, the EcoMacs intend to expand their project in Pichon and fund the McAuley Jatropha Farm in the same location. The farm will provide necessary fuel for the biodiesel project which will, in turn, provide electricity to Pichon for the first time ever and allow students to attend high school classes at night. In addition, the EcoMacs hope to donate toward the purchase of technology needs of the science department. The EcoMacs also placed first in the Tweet Home Chicago Birdhouse contest. The students built a “condo” like birdhouse for purple martins using recycled computer part. Tweet Home Chicago bird houses will be featured in Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s Nature’s Architects Exhibits from March 18 - August 6, 2011. www.mothermcauley.org
All-State Show: Over the summer two McAuley students auditioned and were chosen for the All-State Show. The show is “Into The Woods” and will be performed in January at the Illinois High School Theatre Festival. Senior Sarah Menke will play the role of Granny and Junior Elise Harrigan will play the role of Sleeping Beauty and serve as Dance Captain for the show. Only fourteen girls from the entire state were chosen to perform in this production and we are very proud of them. Mrs. Haynes and Mrs. Thomas will attend the Festival with 36 junior and senior theatre students. Not-So-Haunted-House: The International Thespian Society, the Freshman Acting classes, and the Play Production class will again present their Not-So-Haunted House in October for children pre-school- 4th grade. This creative and fun Halloween event has become a favorite in the area and if you know children this age, please bring them to the event on October 26 from 3-6 p.m. All-School Show: “The Sound Of Music” is presently in production and will be performed November 17-20. This show features a talented cast, crew, and orchestra under the direction of Mrs. Patricia Haynes, and conducted by Mr. Roger Rocco, Mr. Patrick Mooney and assisted by Mr. Chad Ensinger. Vocal direction is by Mrs. Carrie Alifantis, Mrs. Julie McKee and Ms. Terri Lenz; Costumes and additional staging by Ms. Erin Haynes; Choreography by Michael Gutrich; and Set Design and Construction under the direction of Mrs. Donna Thomas, Mr. Kyle Dunleavy, and Mr. Patrick Sullivan. McAuley’s Fathers Club Welcomes Freshmen Families The 7th Annual Freshman Family Picnic was held on August 15. Incoming freshmen and their families enjoyed an afternoon of food, games and music provided by the McAuley Fathers Club. The freshmen were divided into homeroom groups to play games and get to know each other before the first day of school. The Tuition Raffle was also drawn at this event and the winner of one year full tuition was the Rynne Family shown below with Dr. Christine Melone (far right).

It is with great sadness that we announce that McAuley Director of Student Records Mary Laughlin passed away on June 12, 2010 after a long illness. Mary was a dedicated worker who had been a part of the McAuley community for more than 20 years. A “behind the Mary Laughlin scenes” member of the Information Services Department, we will forever remember her and the important work she did for our students and families.
A special thanks to everyone who has participated in the Target Take Charge of Education program. Through your support, Target has just awarded Mother McAuley with a check for $1,460. The Take Charge of Education donations accumulate when supporters of McAuley make purchases using their Target Credit Card. Target annually donates up to 1% of these purchases to the eligible school of their choice.
Mary loved Mother McAuley and the students, and often referred to this as her second home. She was a multi-talented woman who loved to cook, sew and was a true artist. She had a quick smile and matching sense of humor. Please join us in offering her family and friends our sincerest condolences.

Counseling Information College Night - In conjunction with the counselors of Brother Rice, the Counseling Department will be presenting the annual College Night on Tuesday, September 28. A College Financial Aid Night will be held on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 p.m. Parent Connection: On Tuesday, October 5 the Counseling Department will host a Parent Connection featuring guest speaker Char Wenc, author and educator. West Midwest Mercy Ministry Grant The Sisters of Mercy of the West Midwest Community awarded Mother McAuley with a grant of $45,000 to expand our student support services and strengthen the vital links between school, home and the community. This is the first year for the West Midwest Ministry Grant. McAuley was 1 of 77 eligible organizations to apply for this first year of an integrated granting process on the part of the West Midwest Community. A portion of the funding will go to the Counseling Department. The McAuley project, Enhanced Student Support Services, is designed to reinforce the work of our present programs as we adjust to changes in our student population and the economic status of many of our families. Additional funding will cover needs such as continued students counseling assistance, professional development for counselors, and input for parents and families. In putting more concentrated efforts into each of these needs the Counseling Department hopes to aid students in identifying those factors that impact their progress in school. At the same time counselors and faculty will seek to sharpen the elements that make up an empowering learning environment. The remaining funds will continue the work of the ACT Advantage Program for a third year. This program provides our entire junior class the opportunity to participate in two sets of workshops designed to prepare them for taking the ACT with increased confidence. The ACT measures knowledge, understanding and skills that our students have acquired throughout their educations. An analysis of the achieved scores of our students reveals a gap in the strategies need for successful standardized test taking. These are the focus of the ACT Advantage Program. Multicultural Night at McAuley McAuley will host the First Annual Multicultural Night on Thursday, October 14 from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Dining Hall. All parents, students, faculty and staff are invited to share their heritage/culture through ethnic displays, costumes, artifacts, pictures, music, dances and food. Anyone interested in participating in the event may complete the form available on Edline. The event will be open to the McAuley community. Details will be available on the McAuley website in the weeks to come.
Memorial Prayer Card Program The Sisters of Mercy offer the McAuley community two beautiful memorial cards to honor loved ones. They can be used as memorial cards, healing cards or for special intentions. All those being honored are remembered in a special monthly mass offered in Mercy Chapel and in the daily prayers of the Sisters of Mercy. Two sizes are available, either an 8x10 with a suggested donation of $20 or a 4x6 with a suggested donation of $10. Donations help support McAuley’s endowment for student financial aid.
