SANTA BARBARA BICYCLE COALITION

QuickRelease Increasing Access 2017 and B e yo nd

Our Vision

BOARD

The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition (SBBIKE) vision is that Santa Barbara will be a leader in creating a bicycle-friendly community and transportation system. Extensive on-road and separated bikeways, a coordinated transit system, parking, and amenities allow us to enjoy a culture where the majority of daily trips include a bicycle. As a result, our community is healthier and encourages balanced living within our resources. Universal cycling education for all ages supports the development of safe and respectful road behaviors from both motorists and cyclists. Widespread community and political support for bicycling is in place. By 2040, because it is a cycling-centered county, Santa Barbara is both a great place to live and work and a nationally acclaimed cycling destination, boasting a year-round calendar of successful, fun, and inclusive events.

SB’s local walking and cycling infrastructure said of her time in SB, “My personal well-being here depends a lot on the fact that I can walk or ride. [Otherwise] I would suffer a lot.” Who still suffers from lack of access? How can we alleviate it? These questions guide SBBIKE’s work. We champion the advocates among us whose courage and understanding of how change comes about lead to more and safer infrastructure. We open new DIY repair shops modeled on the Bici Centro hub, to provide greater access to a “rare and valuable” skillset. We help implement cycling in schools, so all kids will learn to ride and access cycling’s benefits. We hand out lights and interface with increasingly larger swaths of the community, to ensures riders will see and be seen by people in cars and at decision-making tables. We help make high school bike club dreams come true, so young people will have access to the tools of service and accomplishment that will prepare them to build the cities of our future—cities we can actively and safely move through. The world of research is taking on those questions as well. A recent flood of cycling-related academic articles, professional conferences, and informationsharing forums has fueled a better understanding of what bicycling can mean for the environment, for congested cities, for health, and for the economy, say two researchers, John Pucher and Ralph Buehler. In a 2017 Transport Reviews article, “Cycling towards a More Sustainable Transport Future,” the two point to the birth of a global network that has “inspired, enabled and actively promoted cycling.” This county’s network is strong. Together, we’ll continue to increase access and alleviate suffering. With gratitude,

See and Be Seen SBBIK E ’s seventh annual (Ilumin ando la Noc he) Light up the Night Iluminando Uno – An article on class differences among cyclists—highlighting a group of LA Latino riders (invisible in equality and access)—sparked Carmen Lozano’s launch of Iluminando la Noche in 2011. She was then head of SBBIKE’s Spanish Language Outreach Committee. “I was inspired,” Lozano says. “I wanted to really connect with the community.” Enter Light Up the Night: Distribute lights, enabling visibility on the road, while collecting data to ensure the visibility of those cyclists’ challenges. The first Iluminando was “fun,” “disorganized,” and “very successful.” Volunteers on Micheltorena Bridge were out of lights in ten minutes. Lozano laughs. “But we were surrounded by lots of happy and grateful people.” People were learning about SBBIKE (and its connection with Bici). And as volunteers gathered information, they listened, chronicling the difficulties cyclists encountered. “For most,” Lozano reflects, “I don’t think they were used to being treated that way.” Those stories taught SBBIKE a lot. Armed with data, SBBIKE was better able to ask for changes at City Hall. Previously, requests had been anecdotal; now advocates had not just data, but “community voices. It was what the people were saying, not what we were saying,” Lozano says. “That was very powerful.” So too was the generosity of volunteers, businesses, and the media. In 2014, Lozano relocated to Guadalajara, Spain. She’s enjoyed seeing Iluminando evolve—enabling more cyclists to see and be seen.

Biking to Transform: How Cycling Helps Kids (and the Adults they Share the Future with) will it be here, if SBBIKE and Audacious have their say.) Equally surprising, in the US male adult bicyclists outnumber women four to one. “In other modern, industrialized nations, it’s fifty-fifty.” Cycling education aims to close both gender and socioeconomic gaps (lower income students ride less). For Siepmann, in the midst of a PhD program, the research was motivational. Using local cycling/ped infrastructure “changed even my feeling about Santa Barbara. Suddenly, I was not only in the library or sitting home.” As one of many who rely on infrastructure, she says, “My personal well-being here depends a lot on the fact that I can walk or ride. Audacious Foundation supports nonacademic programs in schools because whole child education is more than learning how to read and write. Academic achievement depends on developing a healthy body. Audacious has teamed up with SBBIKE and COAST to bring bicycle education to schools across Santa Barbara County. Kids who walk or bike know more people in their neighborhoods. This sense of belonging, Siepmann says, is one reason biking is “a service to community” (alongside air quality). Siepmann was shocked by the numbers of inactivity. In the sixties, 50 percent of students walked or biked to school. That’s fallen to 13 percent (2009). “It’s sad that biking has been moved to the margin,” says Siepmann. This is not the case in Germany, her home country. (Nor
