SANTA BARBARA BICYCLE COALITION

BOARD

Our Vision The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition (SBBIKE) vision is that Santa Barbara will be a leader in creating a bicycle-friendly community and transportation system. Extensive on-road and separated bikeways, a coordinated transit system, parking, and amenities allow us to enjoy a culture where the majority of daily trips include a bicycle. As a result, our community is healthier and encourages balanced living within our

STAFF

resources. Universal cycling education for all ages supports the development of

David Landecker, Interim Executive Director dlandecker@sbbike.org

safe and respectful road behaviors from both motorists and cyclists. Widespread community and political support for bicycling is in place. By 2040, because it is a cycling-centered county, Santa Barbara is both a great place to live and work and a nationally acclaimed cycling destination, boasting a year-round calendar of successful, fun, and inclusive events.

s we roll into this new decade, the words of civil rights activist Judge Constance Baker Motley come to mind: “Something which we think is impossible now is not impossible in another decade.” What, over the past ten years and change, has proved possible that would have widened the eyes of the handful of bicyclists setting up Bici Centro’s DIY shop at La Casa de La Raza? The certainty that possibilities not yet achievable will open up enables boldness in the face of challenge, vision in the face of confusion. It enables boldness in the face of challenge, vision in the face of confusion. It’s why that wonderful, at times helterskelter, backyard shop flourished into three streamlined community centers—offering DIY assistance, training burgeoning mechanics and cyclists, forging fellowship, and churning out bikes for programs and kids in need. It’s why the idea to offer aid to commuters on rickety rides seeded a solar-powered headquarters / advocacy center that joined forces with other local organizations to pave the way for master planning safe pedestrian and cycling streetscapes in Santa Barbara, Goleta, Santa Maria, and Santa Ynez. It’s why a handful of classes have become bicycle education in 25 schools (for more than 4,000 young people last year alone) across the county. We believe the impossible will become the possible. And so magic happens. For SBBIKE, this past decade has seen many a magical transformation. And particularly this past year or so, other changes have included bidding farewell to a number of dedicated souls whose passion for bicycling, sustainable transportation, and equitable use of our shared public spaces fueled the magic—most recently Bici Centro’s founder and SBBIKE’s executive director for the past decade. In these pages, meet the interim director piloting SBBIKE and its ever-passionate staff and volunteer crew. Feel the growing cohesiveness and inclusivity of the cycling community across Santa Barbara County and the equally growing wave of enthusiasm for cultural change. Read about the importance of going bigger than ever in order to make the change a reality. And know that guiding this en masse pedaling is the right question: What will we, together, prove freshly possible as we ride toward 2030? To being the change we want to see in 2020,

Christine Bourgeois, Education Director edu@sbbike.org Ken Dahmen, Santa Maria Program Manager ken@sbbike.org
