As we begin the Summer Term, we also begin our second year as the SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning. We offer many thanks to everyone who makes the CLL possible – our dedicated teachers, our diligent staff, and most of all, our growing community of students. This Summer, we encourage you to try something new! Bring a friend or come meet new friends. Sign up for a one day workshop or weekend class! And, please, bring your ideas for new classes and teachers. We look forward to engaging with you to make sure that the CLL meets the highest expectations of every lifelong learner in our community.

➜ Singing from the Heart: Basics of Singing This introductory singing class welcomes all shower singers, car singers, chorus singers and closet singers! No experience required, as students learn in a supportive, nurturing and ‘safe’ workshop environment. Eight class sessions will cover the ‘blueprint’ basics of the voice, including breathing, posture and vowels. Students will learn the use of energy and letting go of unnecessary tensions and stress from their daily lives. Using a standard 10 hole diatonic harmonica in the key of A major you can be playing the blues without being bogged down with too much music theory or an expensive instrument. Use the natural human breathing process to have fun with this instantly intuitive instrument. What budding musician wouldn’t want the instant gratification provided by a harmonica?

For the young and old alike, come discover the fun of exploring watercolor painting. This class is designed to enhance, improve and increase your knowledge and skills in watercolor painting. ➜ Sing the Music of the Californios during Fiesta Be part of Santa Barbara’s annual Fiesta Celebration! Come and learn some of the songs that Early Californians sang which included music for children, songs of love, songs for the seasons and many other celebratory songs. You will practice and master many of the songs performed each year during Santa Barbara’s Fiesta celebration. As a class we will be performing these songs in the Fiesta program ‘Flor y Canto’ which is celebrated the Friday of Fiesta at the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens. ➜ Beginning Watercolor: Painting with the Flow

Music is more than just reading notes or putting chords together to make a song. This interactive workshop will provide an understanding of how music is structured. Discover how to figure out melodies and chords more quickly for any song, and how to easily transpose music from one key to another. Learn the notes to any chord without a need for chord charts, sheet music, or tablature. Become familiar with the techniques of other musicians, and start creating catchy compositions or your own. Suitable for musicians of all ages regardless of instrument and proficiency.

Watercolor can be fun, especially when you lose yourself in the flow of the creative process. In this beginning watercolor class, with emphasis on landscape painting, students will be encouraged to paint freely and discover individual style. We’ll cover color mixing and color theory, composition, the elements of design and how to make your paintings come to life by utilizing the effect of light and shadow. Includes painting demonstrations and creative warm-up exercises.

Discuss the impacts of the 60s’ culture on music and of music on the culture. Here is a drawing class for all levels. Develop your skills in measuring, line, use of color, shadow and shading, and use of charcoal, pen and ink, and pastels. Designed for students who want to start or improve their drawing skills, prepare for painting or water color classes, or develop independent works. ➜ Painting the Abstract Landscape Capture the influence and inspiration of landscape as the basis for creating your abstract paintings. Generate sketches and landscape studies and then move into abstraction, exploring simplification, color and surface in your paintings. ➜ Watercolor and Pastel Workshop: A Marriage of Pure Pigment A one of a kind experience from two award winners of watercolor and pastels. This workshop will give you new techniques in watercolor, gouache, and pastel. Watch your creations come alive by mixing media in painting. These innovative techniques can add vibrancy, texture and mood to your work. It can also enhance and resuscitate old pieces that need a little boost. Come spend a day and discover new options for your painting technique.

CRAFTS: CERAMICS ➜ Ceramics: Porcelain Create pure classics from porcelain clay. Students will experiment with glazes and learn various oriental decorating techniques using green, blue, gray and transparent Celadon glazes. This class is recommended for all students with at least one year of throwing experience.

CRAFTS & HOBBIES: GENERAL ➜ Picture Framing ll A workshop for intermediate and advanced framing students, artists and others who wish to continue framing under the supervision of a professional framer. Students will work on their own selected projects with individual coaching as necessary from the instructor. Include lectures and/or demonstration as needed. Picture Framing 1 or instructor recommendation is advised.

Exercises are conducted from a seated position for students with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or older adults who are new to exercise. Roast, grill and bake veggies, fruit desserts, salads, biscuits, soup (yes, soup) and protein entrees! Think beyond the ‘hunk of meat’ BBQ and explore the many ways of the grill. Learn about marinades and rubs too. We’ll also prepare fabulous picnic salad sides to satisfy both the meat lovers and the vegans! Grilled Summer Gazpacho Soup; Grilled Corn Salsa with Seasonal Seafood; Fabulous Grilled Vegetable Platter; Grilled Pineapple; Kebobs, Grilled Grass Fed Steak with Caramelized onions over Wilted Greens; Chicken Sausage over Spring Greens and Buttermilk Dressing are just some of the dishes you will enjoy preparing in class.

Nori is the tasty seaweed sheets and maki means wrap unlike sushi which means vinegared rice. We will wrap a variety of smoked or cooked seafood and some interesting vegetarian alternatives. Nothing raw here but some veggies. Learn how to roll popular sushi-like rolls including California Roll and Tempura rolls. We will use the brown and white rice used in sushi, noodles with vegetables and prepared seafood and tofu. We will also prepare side dishes like Easy Stir Fry; Wakame Cumumber Salad; Kombu Dashi Miso Soup to enjoy!

Important Information & Policies The SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning

Refund & Transfer Policy

CLASS FEES

BEFORE 1ST CLASS

Class fees include:

• A student may receive a refund of all fees minus a $10 processing fee

• TUITION FEES — $5 per hour; the hourly rate for workshops and specialized classes may vary.

• A student may transfer to another class at no charge

• MATERIALS FEES — cover items used in class or taken home by students, e.g. handouts, food for cooking, clay for ceramics.

BEFORE 2ND CLASS (After 1st class begins)

• LAB FEES — cover specialized supplies, utilities, and personnel costs.

• NO refunds • A student may transfer into another class at no charge

• BUILDING FEES — cover off-campus rental fees.

AFTER 2ND CLASS

CANCELLATION The minimum enrollment for already scheduled CLL classes is just five students, with the exception of classes with lab fees. However, if a class does not meet the enrollment anticipated by the instructor, he or she may cancel the class at his/her own discretion. In the event the class is cancelled by the college, the student will receive a full refund or will be able to apply the class fee towards another class.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR DISABILITY: SBCC students with disabilities who are requesting accommodations for classes, college activities or tests should use the following SBCC procedure: (1) Contact Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS); (2) Submit documentation of your disability to the DSPS office; (3) Communicate with a DSPS counselor regarding options for services and accommodations; (4) Reach written accommodation agreement with the DSPS counselor and your instructor. (NOTE: This procedure also includes student requests to bring into classes personal service attendants who are not SBCC employees.)
