Program Description
Program Director
The American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (18041864) may have said it best when he described Rome writing, “How is it possible to say an unkind or irreverent word of Rome? The city of all time, and of all the world!” The “Eternal City” offers students the magical opportunity to live amongst some of the most famous and important art and architecture in the world. Imagine meandering down cobblestone streets into the Piazza Navona, throwing euros into Trevi fountain, sitting on the Spanish Steps, or sipping a cappuccino in St. Peter’s Square. While in Rome, you will tour all of the gems that it has to offer such as the Sistine chapel, the Vatican Museum, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Additionally, you will see more of Italy when you take two weekend side trips to Venice and the Amalfi Coast.
Sarah Boggs has been teaching English Literature and Writing for 18 years. After earning her B.A. in English Literature at UC Santa Barbara, she earned an M.A. in Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing at CSU, Chico. As a graduate student at Chico she discovered a passion for teaching students to write and returned to UC Santa Barbara to earn her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy and Composition Studies. Sarah taught at CSU, Chico, UCSB, City College of San Francisco, and UC Berkeley before taking a fulltime position with SBCC in 2013. When she's not teaching, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband, Peter, and their two children, Madeleine and Grace and their family dog, Saint. After a family trip to Italy in 2016, Sarah and her family have all started learning Italian, cooking pasta and generally trying to be more like the Italians they met while there! Sarah looks forward to sharing her passion for writing and Italy with the students who join her program!
