PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Experience Germany with a focus on Art and Design! Travel as an artist and see some of the greatest collections of art and design in their birthplace. Apply the introductory art classes to major collections of art and explore more of the rich artistic and cultural history of Berlin, Weimar, Prague, and Munich. To enhance your understanding of Art and Design, the offered courses will be the lens to understand and illustrate the key concepts of modern art and graphic design. Both courses will utilize sketchbooks and Canvas to study the language used by artists and designers. You will create your own visual record of your journey, gaining a better understanding of art and art-making. But this isn’t just any trip to Germany! 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the BAUHAUS movement of the 1920’s, which influences all your art and design classes. Bauhaus’ approach to teaching and understanding art’s relationship to society and technology had a major impact on Europe and the U.S. After refusing to accommodate the pressures of the Nazi regime, the Bauhaus closed in 1932. The 100th anniversary promises once-in-a-lifetime exhibits and celebrations of the movement.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS There are also several mandatory excursions as part of the program. Some of the tentative excursions include: Bauhaus Archive Museum Hamburger Bahnhof Museum Allied Museum Berlinsche Galerie Dessau Torten Housing Estate Berlin's Museum Island East Side Galerie, Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie Memorial to Murdered Jews of Europe and Palace of Tears Bauhaus Building in Dessau The graffiti wall in Prague Kutna Hora *Before the start date of the program, should the U.S. State Department issue a “Travel Warning” that American citizens must not travel to Germany, SBCC will cancel the program. If the program is canceled as a result of a travel warning, AIFS will refund the entire program fee to all participants on that program.
