PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

(Check or money order made out to AEA) ** Please Note that only if you are not currently a SBCC student, we will hold on to your check until April 15, 2019 to avoid you having to enroll at SBCC twice. * Before the start date of the program, should the U.S. State Department issue a “Travel Warning” that American citizens must not travel to Cuba or Jamaica, SBCC will cancel the program.

o You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC,

but upon acceptance into the program, you must enroll at SBCC for Summer Session II 2019 in order to participate in the Cuba and Jamaica program. o You must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure. o You have to be in good academic standing to participate in the program. o There is no major or language requirement on any of our programs. Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until all required documents are received by the Study Abroad staff, you have completed the interview with the program director and been officially accepted by the SBCC Study Abroad Program. Please note that once you are accepted into the program, proof of Travel Health Insurance is required to participate in this program. Ask the office for providers if your current insurance provider does not offer travel health coverage.

APPLICATION PROCESS Applications are available at the SBCC Study Abroad Office and online at sbcc.edu/studyabroad Submit the $450 application deposit with the program application and required application documents to the SBCC Study Abroad Office by April 15, 2019. Please make check out to AEA, our service provider. We cannot accept cash! After review of your application, an interview with Professor Hutchinson or Professor Bieber will be scheduled. If you live outside the Santa Barbara area, you may be interviewed by phone or Skype. The deposit check will be forwarded to AEA by the April 15, 2019 deadline, but becomes non-refundable at the time of official acceptance to the program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Summer 2019 Cuba and Jamaica Program is a rare opportunity to earn transferable units over three weeks of travel to two of the most desirable destinations in the Caribbean. You will start your Caribbean sojourn in Havana, Cuba, where you will observe a distinctly different way of life. The government and social systems of Cuba continue to generate global interest and curiosity, and this trip will allow you to experience its changing dynamics first hand. In addition, you will be experiencing Cuban music, dance, art, and much more. From Cuba you will be transported to the crystal waters of Montego Bay. Explore every major part of the island of Jamaica as you capture the journey on film for your Digital Storytelling class. In addition to taking three units in Digital Storytelling, students on this program will experience daily life from a new lens through a course in Interpersonal Communication, which will allow you to explore your own self-concept and social identity in relation to the cultures in which you will be immersed. The unique combination of the two courses will allow you to examine and refine your own worldview, guaranteeing that you return from this trip forever changed.

PROGRAM CO- DIRECTOR Dr. Carrie Hutchinson teaches courses in Interpersonal Communication and Leadership, and enjoys taking students across the world where they can engage in a unique form of education outside the typical classroom. Over the past decade she has taken students on a variety of study abroad programs including those to Rwanda, South Africa, India, and Cuba. Before her tenure at SBCC, she was the traveling professor for the WorldSmart Leadership Program through the University of Colorado, taking students from over 20 countries across three continents each semester while they studied Intercultural Communication. Professor Hutchinson recently co-created the first-ever Associate Degree in Global Leadership for SBCC.

PROGRAM CO- DIRECTOR Professor Curtis Bieber has worked on the creative side of Film and Video Production for 25 years as a Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Colorist, and Motion Graphic Artist for both broadcast and theatrical projects. Professor Bieber is Chair of the Film & Television Production Department at Santa Barbara City College and has taught Production there for 18 years, and has lectured at Antioch University and UC Santa Barbara. He has traveled to over 50 countries in six continents and lived abroad for two years. He has directed previous SBCC study abroad programs in Australia, Spain & Portugal, Prague, Berlin & Amsterdam, London, and Rwanda.

TRAVEL Round-trip airfare is not included in the program price; however, AEA, the program provider, offers an optional group flight. A minimum of 10 participants are required for the group Airfare Package to materialize. The optional Airfare Package includes: o Round-trip flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and Havana (HAV) and Montego Bay to LAX in economy/standard. o AEA staff meet-and-greet at the airport to assist on arrival and escort students to their housing. o One-way flight from Havana to Montego Bay is included. o The airfare package is offered on a space-available basis. o Once airline tickets have been issued to students, they can only be changed directly with the issuing agent and agent and airline-imposed penalties apply. o Students who want to purchase the group flight option will need to be officially accepted into the program by March 18, 2019. Submit your application early to allow for the application process, which can take several weeks depending on your submission of all documents and completing the interview.

o Tentative Group Flight Cost: $990 (subject to change) payable to AEA.

The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your adviser for possible exceptions. You must enroll in 6 units.

TRAVEL Round-trip airfare is not included in the program price; however, AEA, the program provider, offers an optional group flight. A minimum of 10 participants are required for the group Airfare Package to materialize. The optional Airfare Package includes: o Round-trip flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and Havana (HAV) and Montego Bay to LAX in economy/standard. o AEA staff meet-and-greet at the airport to assist on arrival and escort students to their housing. o One-way flight from Havana to Montego Bay is included. o The airfare package is offered on a space-available basis. o Once airline tickets have been issued to students, they can only be changed directly with the issuing agent and agent and airline-imposed penalties apply. o Students who want to purchase the group flight option will need to be officially accepted into the program by March 18, 2019.
