16.30-17.00 Comments and discussion (Kevin Donovan, Chris Boyle and Silvia Blanco).

Alonso Moro, CĂŠsar The work will consist of a first analysis of the concept of shelter as the first principle of architecture. I will talk about the written theories in the Renaissance dealing with the evolution of architecture from its origins until it is considered an abstract art that reinterprets nature. Subsequently, in a second section, I will discuss the different uses given to the refuge currently, uses that ranging from object-refuge to home-refuge. The shelter treated as the minimum object that induces inner reflection and shows the beauty of nature, devoid of artifice where the inhabitant is considered like a component of her.

CharlĂn Nine, Irina This research aims to realize an architectural brief for a Thalasso-Thermal Rehabilitation Center in Oza, A CoruĂąa. That is the way the necessary requirements for the execution and implementation of the project can be analyzed. Therefore the first part of the article consists of a theoretical framework to establish the basic concepts that will be used in the development of this proposal. It also emphasizes the possibilities of thalassotherapy in the treatment and prevention of illness. After a technical study, the project is carried out by determining the various activities and services that it can accommodate. All this aspects will set the strategy to follow in designing the project.

Comedeiro Viñas, Manuel Alejandro

My intention is to focus on the search for an identity to the fishing villages and offer possible solutions or hypotheses for optimum heritage conservation, which is not incompatible with the new architectural construction. Those issues are usual in a many coastal areas that grow excessively without regard to the context and where the new buildings are violently settling without control. Therefore, it is important to take into account the relationship which can be established between the new architecture and the traditional one, the area of my interest.

Díaz Cabanas, Araceli The urban oblivion I have chosen will help me establish a connection between the historical town and new areas of Betanzos. This urban void is an opportunity plot, so this research paper will focus on this type of urban situations. What I have tried is to look for the keys in Betanzos’ growth to understand how my project should melt with the existing elements. After analyzing the exhaustive recommendations and descriptions of Jane Jacobs about neighborhoods, I extracted a conclusion: her ideas will help me understand the reality of the plot and how to act on it.

Fernández Murciego, Andrea Since the mid-twentieth century in Spain it has produced an exodus of population from the country to the city that has been caused by industrialization. Consequently, cities have to grow and change their shape in order to satisfy the new inhabitants’ needs. As their growth was planned, some residual areas, called urban voids, appeared; namely abandoned spaces located inside the city boundaries that may have always been in disuse or the result of the deterioration of a constructed area. In this sense, the aim of the research paper is to analyze an urban void with a memory. It is located in A Coruña, in the district of Riazor and is the site of a former village called San Roque de Afuera. It was a fisherman and farm laborers' quarter that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Due to several causes, the quarter eventually disappeared and now the hypothesis proposed is how to construct this space keeping in mind its history and its relationship with the surroundings, especially La Ciudad Escolar.

Fraga Rodríguez, Raquel Wine tourism is on the rise. Spanish wine is living its time of splendour, inside and outside our borders and that is the reason why so many wineries have decided to invest exorbitant amounts of money to improve its facilities and the quality of the raw materials with the aim of breaking with force in the international market. For a few years now, architecture has been the means that these wineries have used to create an image, a letter of presentation. For that reason, my final project consists in designing a winery on a 1

slope of the banks of the Mandeo, in Betanzos , with which I intend to revitalize the area, raising the prestige of the wine of this 2

town . In this case, architecture in steep slope is a creative challenge, so the interesting research will be to know the reciprocity between building and environment, between artifice and nature.

Betanzos area is the only one in the North of Galicia, where the wine is made. The old town of Betanzos, one of the seven capitals of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia, is currently in a precarious state of abandonment.

González Pacheco, Hernán The aging population is a fact that is increasingly present in our society due to rising life expectancy and declining fertility rates. This creates the possibility of opening up new ways of treating the elderly. According to the World Health Organization, active aging is the process by which opportunities for health, participation and security in order to improve the quality of life for people as they age are optimized. From this idea, the conclusion can be drawn that there is a need to prevent the exclusion of this part of society. The article will focus on the architectural resources needed to improve the functional ability of older people and their social participation and security.

Hernández Ricoy, Óscar The complication of imagining habitation as an integral part of the project –the, space, context, materials, different building systems, reflections on the brief, and even the history of architecture– converges to form the essence of a decision that will shape the project process and that will eventually lead to architecture. Any idea can form the origin of a project, but it is its development (the process) that gives it architectural consistency. A dorm is for many students their first home outside the parental home; a new way of living , where family life gives way to study and social relationships with their peers and academic activity will take up most of their day. The project aims to contribute to the constant search for architectural solutions and establish a variation in housing typology. Moreover, it aims to provide urban continuity for a specific area where conservation of the coastline has played a major role and create accommodation for more than four hundred students living away from the family home enrolled in the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Science (INEF) at the University of A Coruña.

Lariño Pinazas, Ana The prison of A Coruña was built between 1924 and 1927 in order to relocate the prisoners. It was used as the Provincial Prison until 1999, when the government finally put to an end its use as prison. Since then it has remained without a specific activity, at the mercy of deterioration and the elements, and as a result the building is falling into an increasingly ruinous state. However, there is a distinctive characteristic that remains. Even though the style of the prison is eclectic, it follows the organization of the Panopticon style, which gave the building scenography and specific characteristics that remain despite the wear and tear of the materials. This research aims to detect the most characteristic elements from this type of design which possess special structures with the objective of establishing a strategy appropriate for my future intervention on the building.

Lorente Martínez, Hector This essay is focused in the analysis of different cities where the lacking urban planning gave cause to a urban intervention, powered by the historical heritage. To achieve this, I am going to choose several cases, like Gijón and Lleida, among others like Lugo, Santiago or Vitoria. The goal is to highlight the issues that can be related with the fishing village of Caión, object of my final year project. All these studies will allow me to find a more consistent solution to the current urban disorder, one that preserves the inherited value of the fishing arts and, at the same time, promotes tourism.

Mallo Trabadelo, Carlos

In relation with the PFC, which aims to create a residence or temporary accommodation for research into the area; an enclosure marked mainly by accommodation and hospital facilities and services. The parameters to follow when thinking about accommodation for a specific group of people, lead me to study certain characteristics before planning the building and to understand the social relation through the creation of different spaces or dwellings. My objective with this plan is to understand certain parts to give the dwelling great flexibility and a series of spaces which have been the object of prior reflection and reasoning. To be able to insert these spaces it is necessary to previously understand them; whereby their correct development allows them to be unified (various areas considered or seen as a single space).

MenĂŠndez Nistal, Luis This research paper is related to the term "dwelling" and also to my project, a residential housing in A CoruĂąa. The main goal is to create a building that help to improve the quality of life of a number of people who interact daily with health, and therefore it is placed near hospital complex in the area of As Xubias. At first, a series of tests and interviews have furnished the project decision and the location of the building in order to solve some problems. Then a module is designed in order to minimize costs, extend the length and flexibility of spaces to meet the needs of all inhabitants. This is the main issue I attend along the work and also gives meaning to the project. With all this research, I am looking for not only the brief and needs, but to find suitable solutions for serial building and changing the way of thinking from many people who have to deal with it. Moreover, the work focuses on durability, manufacture, maintenance and use of the houses, which would be not as expensive as everyone thinks.

Pose Bazarra, Javier Urban acupuncture is defined as an intervention theory that allows for certain areas of a city to be revitalized through specific actions, thereby providing an alternative to complex and costly large scale urban planning. Just like the traditional Chinese medical technique it is named after, this work method consists of locating the key points that require action in order to regenerate the areas that need it, as well as improve resident's quality of life. In the case of a small village like CaiĂłn, in the province of A CoruĂąa, urban acupuncture could also be effective in bringing to the fore its own culture and identity.

Rego DĂaz, Rebeca Nowadays the urban sprawl which is being carried out is causing serious land use changes and sometimes the degradation of natural and cultural resources. This research addresses the study of a specific area, the Oleiros-Sada peninsula, and a concrete development pattern: urban planning based on a low density model. This area is subject to major urban pressure; however we can still find some areas characterized by their cultural and environmental resources. These can be denominated as invisible landscapes, marked by traces of the hand of man, organizing and defining this territory in a characteristic way. This has led to its transformation into part of the collective identity of this area. Not only are the physical work scars important but also the intangible heritage and the memories. It's necessary for us to understand these sites as memory places. As a result, the preservation and recovery of these areas is essential to understanding the evolutionary process and preventing cultural and environmental unsustainability.

Salvadores Fraga, Pablo Temporary architecture. Yes, this term may raise doubts as to their possible meanings. Time is relative, and the permanence of a building in a place always depends on the use. Many nautical activities in Galicia are mainly developed in the summer, for their relationship with the sea state, although it isn´t always so. Therefore, the differentiation between "ephemeral" and "seasonal" is something to take into account at the time to design this final project. It´s also impossible not to think about the type of building and the construction system that will be chosen for the project, because the image linked to these activities usually refers to light and prefabricated buildings.

Sánchez Tomé, Sheila The problems associated with the recovery of marine wildlife are quite unknown to society, although this issue regularly appears in news stories in the media. Galicia has more kilometers of coastline than any other autonomous community in Spain and therefore is the site of many incidents of this type. Despite this fact, the region has no specialized recovery and marine research facilities. In the light of this I decided to carry out a final project that would fill this gap. The search for a suitable location, with a necessary link to the sea, led me to consider recycling maritime heritage in disuse. This study aims to prove the hypothesis that may project can recover a former port space providing it with an alternative use, but still related to the sea. Taking the analysis of several examples of recycle coastal elements and interventions in the marine environment as the starting point, my intention is to convert and abandoned quay into a coastal landmark, but with the condition that my building will housed marine wildlife protection facilities.

Taboada Loureiro, Alejandra Betanzos wetland area is a reference in Galicia, such for this particular ecosystem as for this cultural heritage. The purpose of this research paper is to study how we can repair a wasted fluvial environment, like the above-mentioned, first analyzing the importance of this wetland ecosystem, the resources and the existing problems. Taking other examples of study in the fluvial and natural environment, I will establish a strategy for the recovery of the working area of my final project which allows the correction of the existing shortcomings that refers to natural and recreational spaces.

Torres Sรกnchez, Jacobo In this research is analyzed the way in which the institutions or companies transmit their identity and corporate image. Apparently it can be understood as a formal problem, but actually the role played by the building is even more important. Buildings have been analyzed in line with their functional characteristics. From buildings that work as exhibition centers, only public, to buildings that introduces educational and cultural values then others that mix public and private in different rankings. The choice of a program of the building and it content must be consistent with the company, with its image, with its work and with the values and the perception that people have of the institution as a whole, and of that building or space in particular.

Trillo Calo, テ]xela Architectural interventions in natural areas have always required a great understanding of the place. This research paper approaches the analysis of various projects, from different disciplines, to gain an insight into the variety of strategies for action. It is about understanding the factors necessary for a project to interact with the environment, as indicated by the sculptor Richard Long when he says: "I like the fact that every stone is different, one from another, in the same way all fingerprints, or snowflakes (or places) are unique, so no two circles can be alike. In the landscape works, the stones are of the place and remain there. With an indoor sculpture there is a different working rationale. The work is usually first made to fit its first venue in terms of scale, but it is not site-specific; the work is autonomous in that it can be re-made in another space and place".
