PROGRAM GUIDE SBC of VIRGINIA

1

W from OUR PRESIDENT Welcome to the 2019 SBC of Virginia annual meeting! Thank you for making the journey from across the Commonwealth to celebrate what God has done through our partnership of churches this year. There is a lot to celebrate, and we pray that God would unite our hearts together with joy and purpose during our gathering and the months to follow. We will be encouraged by the annual reports, showing that our convention of churches is accomplishing so much for the glory of God. We will be inspired by the messages and worship which will bring us closer to Jesus and His purpose. We will be strengthened together as we fellowship with our SBC of Virginia family from all points of the Commonwealth. I personally pray that God would overwhelm each of us gathered with His life-shaping, church-transforming, soul-satisfying love. We are blessed as a convention of churches by our executive director, Dr. Brian Autry. His faithful leadership, saturated by wisdom and the gospel, is a gift from God to us. We are thankful for the tireless efforts of the SBC of Virginia staff who have worked so hard to make this Homecoming such a special time. The pastor, staff, and congregation of First Baptist Church of Roanoke also deserve our thanks for providing a marvelous welcome to us. May God’s grace meet us and may His mission unite us to share the good news of His love so that together we may know and rejoice that Disciples Are Not Alone! In the fields,

ERIC THOMAS

Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church, Norfolk President, SBC of Virginia

WELCOME from OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR On behalf of your convention officers, executive board, SBC of Virginia team, and our wonderful host church and pastor, welcome to the SBC of Virginia Annual Homecoming. We pray that this will be much more than just another meeting, but instead, a time for SBC of Virginia churches to join together as we worship the Lord and celebrate how the Lord is working through His Church to plant, strengthen, mobilize, and revitalize churches. Over the past few years our Annual Homecoming has emphasized You Are Not Alone – and those four words have become more than a theme but are now a thread that permeates our understanding of the SBC of Virginia. In particular, this year’s Annual Homecoming is emphasizing Disciples Are Not Alone. Disciple-making is at the core of the Great Commission, and we want to call the SBC of Virginia to engage in a renewed focus on building healthy groups, teaching the Word, and reaching people with the Gospel. As you experience this homecoming these next couple of days, our prayer is that you will be encouraged by the ministry that is taking place thanks to your church partnership in praying, sending, giving, and going through the SBC of Virginia. Your brother in Christ,

BRIAN AUTRY

DOCTRINE

TEACHING DOCTRINE IN SMALL GROUPS Keith & Amy Whitfield

Treehouse

9:15 AM

10:30 AM

Can doctrine be taught well in small groups, or is it just too difficult (and even dangerous) given how complex the discussions can be? Do you really want to turn your small group leaders loose, even your best and most biblically mature, to lead discussions on biblical themes and topics that are often times confusing and can even create division? For many, we suspect the tendency is to avoid doctrine in small groups and remain focused on practical points of application, because they are afraid bad theology will be taught or theological debate will dominate the discussion. However, for the sake of our faith, we believe doctrine must be taught well in small groups. This can be accomplished if leaders are trained on the purpose of doctrine, how to lead theological discussion, and basic beliefs of the church. SMALL GROUPS

You will learn from a practitioner who will share from practical experience the powerful impact that a healthy, missional small group or Sunday School ministry can have on your church.
