THE ART OF CONSIGNMENT

Generations of Style

At high-end consignment showroom, The Art of Consignment, coowners Amy Maloney and Judy Smith have curating resale furniture and decor goods down to a science. The shop, a veritable trove of top-quality, pre-owned furniture and decor items, showcases collections from Henredon, Baker, Palecek and other covetable lines. In 2019 when the mother/daughter duo sold their houses and were in dire need of finding new homes for their personal collections of "lonely furniture", the shop got its start. Since then, the pair have used their collective well-trained eyes and experience in staging and interior design to amass a myriad of pieces from around the world.

The Art of Consignment space, merchandised with inspiring vignettes, makes it easy to imagine how these previously-loved pieces—like the recently acquired McGuire rattan sheaf of wheat dining table—could become the next owner's prized possession. Half of the fun here is the treasure hunt; chances are you will be wellrewarded for the time spent perusing. Don't stop at the storefront; be sure to explore the narrow isles of the petite labyrinth in the back of the store, as it is full of unexpected gems. And if you see something you love (and chances are you will), hop on it because the inventory turns over like hot cakes!

While there are many compelling reasons to shop consignment, sustainability is at the top of that list, especially when fantastic options at affordable prices already exist. Ms. Maloney sees "vintage is an essential part of the circular economy" and takes pride in knowing that the business she and her mother have created is decreasing the consumption of new furniture and, in part, creating more sustainable commerce. Here, everyone wins; the consignor, the proud new owner and the environment. The next time you are in the market for a home update, pop into The Art of Consignment and feather your nest with a fabulous "new-to-you" find.

"Each piece we source is unique. While we look for quality, style and usability, we also search for eye-catching and timeless goods. Our collection is curated for our customers and keeping up with trending styles and indemand merchandise is a vital part of our job. Our favorite pieces are those with stories behind them. We love hearing about the history of pieces, making them all the more one of a kind."

DECOR DETAILS

> It's all in the details and finishing touches. The impressive showroom, filled with wonderful decor items, inspires layering a space with objects that tell a story, add texture or a pop of color. And sometimes treasures like this fabulous ceramic vase tick all of the boxes.

CLUB RED

> We're smitten with this paisley slip-covered club chair, and it has a twin if you'd prefer a pair. It's just the right classic red and perfect for sinking in and curling up with your current read and a cup of tea. There are always loads of cozy comfort options in the form of sofas, settees, chairs and upholstered benches.

IN HEAVY ROTATION

> The Art of Consignment's selection of original paintings—including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and abstracts—turns over quickly as it's a go-to for clients, collectors and designers in search of additions to a gallery wall. There's nothing like art to add depth and interest to a homescape.

MID-CENTURY MOMENT

> The inventory includes pieces from a timeline that spans decades, even centuries and a design aesthetic that ranges from mid-century modern—like this gorgeous coffee table—to 1980s Memphis Design. The criteria for consigning here is simple; if it's a quality item in good condition that has retained its value, it just may end up on the store floor.

HIDDEN HAPPY HOUR

> This 18th century mahogany bar cabinet looks like a sophisticated doll house, but to the delight of adults at cocktail time, behind those darling little doors is a full bar!

DINING DEAL

> This like-new swoon-worthy seagrass woven base side chair is part of a perfect set from Restoration Hardware.
