Exercise 01: Chinese Calligraphy in Practise

Test 1 - Class Practise

Test 2

My very first attempt at Chinese Calligraphy. There holds 8 strokes in each character and each stroke is different. So testing this was difficult.

Testing the characters of my Chinese name.

The third character means a different word with so many strokes taken away. I need to replace the bottom right stroke on the second right side of the Character. To make the word readable.

Looking in to different types of ways of creating effective type through trying use of colour, positive/negative and 3D ideas.

Exercise 03: Playing With Materials

With this exercise i worked as a team in order to understand the words I was aiming to express through the use of materials I chose. We looked in to natural materials.

Here we tried to create a shadowing effect with the natural sunlight being so bright.

Here we looked in to the likes of nature, water, drugs and tryed to work a little with the sunlight to create shadows.

Exercise 03: Playing With Materials

Grating wax candles to try make a shodaw effect when photographed, bits of green wax got caught but I think the effect works with the minimal colour.

I tested the word tea, drugs and big whilst also trying to create the word “finger from using my fingers.

Exploring candle light effects

Testing of Light & Shadow For this test I ued a finished toilet roll cardboard. I then roughly drew chinese characters inside the curved cardboard. Then photographed it with a tealight to see if the shadow from the curve of the cardboard could have a gentle effect.

Exercise 04: Exploration on 3D Idiom Idea

My process for the 3D Idiom

>> To begin with I cut out all the seperate strokes. Secondly I then laid them out on the table and organised the structure. Thirdly, I strung them togetherwith thin

The very first part of this process is to organise all the characters in to an order that is readable by the viewer. This was difficult for me as if the strokes are too far apart it can become completely unreadable.

I did a lot of testing of the use of light through my project and these were the last few that were taken that became my favourite.

Exercise 05: Final Design

This is the first final Poster design for this project, I chose to focus on the shadow effects from the exercise on Playing with Materials. On this poster there also is a poem by Sara Teasdale that relates well with the meaning behind my chosen Idiom. The final three below the main image are my favourite tests from this project.

Exercise 05: Final Design

This is a second poster showing just the final design on its own. I think the shadow effect within the 3D strokes work well and the atmosphere behind my design follows its meaning of my chosen Idiom.
