Concurrent Sessions (Select One)

B01 - The Future Begins Now: How Current Trends are Shaping the 10 Growth Areas of Tomorrow (EC–2) Erica Orange and Jared Weiner, MBA Weiner, Edrich, Brown, Inc. The world, and everything in it - especially technology - is changing at break neck speed. This session will discuss how several major technological, social, economic, demographic and environmental trends are shaping the 10 growth areas of the emerging Metaspace Economy. We will take a journey into the short and long-term future to uncover the growth opportunities of tomorrow.

B02 - Nexus and Multistate Tax Issues (TX–2) Bob Baldwin, CPA, PFS, AEP and Ken Newhouse, CPA, CITP Baldwin & Associates and Moore, Beauston & Woodham LLP When your company conducts business out of state, it can easily establish nexus. Nexus is the minimum connection or contact between a taxpayer and a state sufficient to subject the business to the taxing jurisdiction of that state. Although this is not always unfavorable, it does add significant burdens in terms of record keeping and filing requirements. Business income taxes and sales/use tax requirements imposed by another state can be significant and interest and penalties can be assessed for all previous years back to the first year nexus was established. States do not use a standard tax system when imposing their taxes on business entities. Differences occur according to the type of tax imposed, the base on which the tax is assessed, the type of return required, which entities are included in the return, how receipts are divided among the states, and when returns are due. This session will help you better understand the requirements to ensure compliance.

B03 - Excel Guru's Toolbox (SK–2) Steven Phelan, CPA K2 Enterprises Beyond PivotTables, which many users consider Excel's most powerful feature, it has many other great features and add-ins. In this session, you will examine the top Excel features and add-ins to make you more productive. Examples include Fuzzy Lookup, Analysis ToolPak, ActiveData, Conditional Formatting, Evaluate Formula, Custom Views, the Camera, Slicers, Sparklines, top hot keys, and much more. This is a must-see session if you want to improve your Excel skills.

Concurrent Sessions C01 - Accounting & Auditing Update (AC-1/AU-1) Tom Pietras, CPA Bauknight, Pietras & Stormer, PA The session is intended to be a "10,000 feet level" overview of current developments and trends in accounting and auditing standards. We will cover recent and proposed actions by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the AICPA, and others. C02 - Federal and South Carolina State Tax Credits for Small Businesses (TX-2) Erik Doerring, Esquire McNair Law Firm, PA Businesses, particularly small businesses, must be competitive to survive and grow in an everchanging environment. Federal and S.C. state tax credits exist offering a variety of incentives and tax subsidies to small businesses to induce them to add or maintain employment, to grow investment, to operate in particular geographic areas, and to encourage other conduct. The CPA must be aware of these incentives to properly advise his or her clients in order to reduce the client's otherwise applicable federal and state tax burden. The CPA should assume that the client's competitors are aware of these tax credits and subsidies, and if the CPA is also not aware of these incentives the CPA advises the client at his or her peril. C03 - Excel's PowerPivot And Power View: A Dynamic Duo! (SK-2) Steven Phelan, CPA K2 Enterprises Two new Excel features - PowerPivot and Power View - provide unparalleled options for analyzing data and preparing interactive reports. With PowerPivot, you can make your PivotTables even more potent, while Power View offers visualization techniques to enhance the appearance of your reports. You will learn to put the power of both of these amazing tools to use immediately by participating in this very practical session, which is sure to help you improve your analytical and reporting processes. C04 - Integrated Reporting (SK-2) Ricky Cronin International Integrated Reporting Council Integrated Reporting <IR> is a process that results in communication by an organization, most visibly a periodic integrated report, about value creation over time. An integrated report is a concise communication about how an organization’s strategy, governance, performance and prospects, in the context of its external environment, lead to the creation of value over the short, medium and long term. Over 100 global businesses and 50 institutional investors are directly involved in the IIRC’s work. This includes some of the world’s most iconic brands, such as Coca-Cola, Clorox, Microsoft, Hyundai, Tata, Unilever, Marks and Spencer, SAP and National Australia Bank. The business and investor benefits of <IR> are compelling. The empirical evidence from the IIRC Pilot Program shows that <IR> enables the articulation of strategy and how the business is creating value over time.

Find out the latest survey results, learn what they mean for firms and receive advice on how to respond to the hot topics affecting your practice in this session. The South Carolina Legislature has also adopted substantial revisions to the South Carolina Probate Code that take effect on Jan. 1, 2014. F03 - Cloud Document Management 101 (SA–2) Steven Phelan, CPA K2 Enterprises Managing documents in the Cloud is a new ballgame with new rules. The objectives are the same: safe, reliable document storage with all information accurately indexed and easily accessible. What are the applicable laws and regulations? Get your answers to these questions and others, including long-term management issues, by participating in this session. F04 - Profit Improvement: 10 Tips (AC-2) Don Minges, MBA Executive Education When a company is having poor financial performance, the financial person is often the first to go. Whether times are good or times are bad, asking the tough questions and making sure the organization is efficient and stays efficient are part of the financial manager's job. Proactive efforts by financial managers can prevent the need for a company to "catch up." This session provides 10 techniques for improving your company's bottom line.

Concurrent Sessions G01- Importance of Quality Control to Avoid Legal Troubles (AP-2) Fred Crawford, Esquire and Tony Rebello, Esquire Richardson Plowden & Robinson, PA In the context of the professional accounting firm, risk is not a new concept for practitioners. It has been attached to the profession for as long as accountants have offered services in a commercial setting. However, as the number and size of legal claims against professional public accountants has increased over the years, so too has the issue of risk and risk management also increased in importance. Ultimately, it is the partners of the accounting firm that will bear the ultimate responsibility for the firm’s risk management framework. So it is this group (or person if solely owned) that must take the lead in establishing and maintaining a risk management framework, as with periodic evaluation of its design and effectiveness. G02 - Effects of Obama Administration On Employers... Your Employment-Related Risks and How to Prevent Liability (PE-2) Kristen Cato, Esquire Rogers Townsend & Thomas There has been a tremendous effort to expand employee rights with the current administration, much more than what has been typical over the last 20 years. This session will focus on misclassification of employees as independent contractors vs. employees and exempt vs. non-exempt. We will also discuss the National Labor Relations Board and its efforts in unionizing America. G03 - How to Create the Virtual Office (SA-2) Steven Phelan, CPA K2 Enterprises What does it take to move your office to the Cloud? How will you set up virtual desktops and virtual servers and manage the risks associated with each? You know the benefits of moving to the Cloud, now experience what the transition looks like. In this session, you will learn not only what it takes to get the job done, but also observe live demonstrations of setting up Cloud-based servers and desktops. Relax - it is much easier than it sounds! G04 - Effective Change Management (BM-2) Don Minges, MBA Executive Education Research shows that far too many change initiatives fail to launch properly or endure because their leaders do not understand the psychological basics of human response to change. Inept change management techniques can cause long-lasting damage or unintended consequences for individuals or organizations. If you have ever observed the negative results of participating in a failed change initiative that logically should have been an easy dunk -- or want to avoid an unnecessarily bad experience -- this session may open your eyes to new awareness and tools for effective change leadership.

H02 - Nonproft Tax Issues (TX-2) Doug Snyder, CPA Doug Snyder, CPA Nonprofit organizations are generally tax free. However, there are many limitations to tax-exempt status, and operating an organization outside those limitations can result in taxation. The most common problem areas for nonprofit entities are political activities, unrelated business and disclosures to the public. Attend this session learn more about protecting your client’s non-profit status by understanding key schedules and make adjustments required by 2013 IRS revisions. This, coupled with trends in the Cloud, security, and other evolving technologies, means the overall pace of change will continue full throttle. Stay up to date on the technologies that will affect busy professionals in 2013 by participating in this fast-paced and highly informative cornerstone session. H04 - Creating the Best Projections You Can (FI-2) Don Minges, MBA Executive Education All we really know is the past but all that really matters is the future. How can you take the historical knowledge you have about your company, its performance, your competitors, your industry and the economy to help your company plan for the future? In this session, Don Minges will examine current budgeting and forecasting best practices as well as the critical roles of strategic planning and risk management in developing best projections.
