WELCOME WELCOME! A very warm welcome to the Autumn 2013 issue of The Scallymag. It’s hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since I wrote my very first welcome message – how time flies! Now that the kids are back at school, I hope you can find a moment to make yourself a cuppa, sit down and enjoy our latest magazine. In this issue, we have lots of news from local schools, including a feature on the school admissions procedure in Kirklees, to help take the stress out of the decision process and give you a few pointers. If you’re wondering what to do with the children during October half term, don’t worry, we have some fantastic ideas for great family days out at Fountains Abbey and the National Railway Museum. Check out our events page and listings section on our diary pages for ideas too – particularly Bonfire Night and Halloween. Our health pages take a look at alternative therapies including equine assisted therapy and laughter yoga – both of which are proving highly beneficial to children and families. You can catch up with the latest news from the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, our chosen charity for the year and also find out about the great work being done by other organisations, including the Town Foundation, Uniform Exchange and One Good Turn. We tackle the issue of domestic violence and show you how to seek help and support. Find out about the myriad of organisations out there that can give assistance, so that you don’t have to struggle on alone. The Scallymag has also teamed up with fairandfunky to support One World Week this Autumn – you can read about the little steps we’re taking to help the environment. There are seasonal reads on our literacy page, courtesy of The Children’s Bookshop, Lindley and lots of news from our wonderful advertisers. Without their support, producing such a quality, free magazine wouldn’t possible, so my heartfelt thanks go to each and every one of them.

News WORK BEGINS ON £3.5 MILLION IMPROVEMENT

W

ork has begun to improve facilities at Huddersfield Grammar School following a £3.5 million investment.

Demolition of the old buildings began in July to make way for the new facilities, which are being funded by the school’s parent company, Cognita. Tim Hoyle, headteacher of the school at Luck Lane, Marsh, said: “I am delighted that Huddersfield Grammar School is able to benefit from this substantial investment. “It demonstrates Cognita’s commitment to the pupils and parents of the school and is a testament to the hard work and efforts of the staff. “The school already achieves great things of its pupils, both in terms of academic results and well-being but with increased and more modern facilities and

resources, our future looks even brighter.” The work, which is scheduled to take place over the next two years, will include improvements to buildings, classrooms and the outside play space. The new 12-classroom block, which will be clad in cedarwood and stone, will include the pre-preparatory school and specialist facilities for food technology, science and art. Other classes will relocate to the historic main Grade II listed building. A total of 408 pupils currently attend the school which caters for children aged between three and 16. Huddersfield Grammar School has been in operation for 15 years and Ed Hyslop, Cognita’s UK managing director, said he hoped the investment would enhance the school’s reputation for academic excellence and improve the educational experience of its pupils.

FULL SCHOLARSHIPS AT HIPPERHOLME Grammar

H

ipperholme Grammar School is once again offering the prestigious Charles Fenton Scholarship to high achieving pupils.

The scholarship, which was introduced in recognition of Mr Fenton’s retirement from the school’s board of governors following 50 years’ service, provides a 100 per cent funded place in the senior school to those who gain the highest marks in the school’s entrance examination. The school at Bramley Lane, Hipperholme, will hold the examination for students hoping to enter year seven on Saturday November 16. An open evening for the senior school will be held on Friday September 27, an open morning for the junior school will be held on Saturday October 5 and a sixth form information evening will take place on Thursday November 7. The Charles Fenton Scholarship is offered in addition to other academic, music, performing arts and sporting scholarships at the senior school, including sixth form. The school is committed to recognising the achievements and talents of children from all backgrounds and enabling them to benefit from the school’s excellent academic, extra-curricular and pastoral provision. To arrange a visit to the school to view its outstanding facilities, telephone the admissions manager, Sue Oliver, on 01422 202256, email info@hgsf.org.uk or visit www.hgsf.org.uk.

THOUSANDS IMPROVE LITERACY WTH TOWN FOUNDATION

total of 15,000 children will be given the opportunity to develop their literacy skills with a special interactive reading diary thanks to the Town Foundation – the official registered charity of Huddersfield Town.

It has teamed up with Kid Premiership and Igloo Books to produce the diaries, which will be delivered to nearly 70 schools across Kirklees every term. Mandy Taylor, corporate fundraising officer for the Town Foundation, said: “The project started 12 months ago, initially with 5,000 copies of the reading diary – that has now gone to 15,000 per term.” The diaries, aimed at children aged between five and 11, are given to pupils that will benefit most, take them home and engage with them, with the support of parents, carers and extended family. They were designed by Kid

Pages in the diaries are sponsored by several club partners. Colourful, informative and full of positive messages, the diaries enable children to write about what they have been reading. They are also designed to help parents keep in touch with their child’s teacher, supporting the work being done in the classroom. Mandy said after receiving a sample, schools (L-R) Mandy Taylor, Rachel Tay have asked for between lor, Andy Booth, Foundation Mascot, Carolin 70 and 360 copies of the e Lee, Alan Hardy diary, which features club She ambassador, Andy Booth, in cartoon form added: “It is all about long term as the Town Foundation’s Captain Booth. TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF THE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS PROCESS

C

hoosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as a parent and the task can feel very daunting.

Let the Scallymag give you a helping hand by guiding you through the minefield of information you need to consider when applying for a full-time school place in Kirklees. First of all, it is important to read up about the schools you are interested in and if possible, visit them – many hold open days in the Autumn where you can view the facilities, speak to the staff and ask questions. Things you may wish to find out about may include the school’s procedure for settling a new child into the daily routine, its homework policy, how you can help to support your child’s development at home, whether there are morning and after school clubs available, lunch arrangements and whether the school has

a Parent, Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA) that you can become involved in. In Kirklees, you only need to complete one common application form to apply for any three schools. There are five types of school including community or voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academies and trust schools. Depending on which school you apply for, either Kirklees Council or the school governors decide who gets a place. To qualify for a place, the admissions authority takes into consideration a number of criteria which can differ for each school. It can include proximity to the school, whether there are already siblings in attendance and in the case of some church schools, whether the child is a practising member of that faith. It is advisable to list three schools in order of preference just in case your first choice is not available. You should also be realistic. For example, your chances of obtaining a place at a school a long way from where you live may well be less than at a school closer to home.

You can make your applications online at the Kirklees Council website, which also means you do not need to wait to find out if your child has been offered a place at your preferred school, as you can view the offer online or opt to receive an email. The application process for school places beginning September 2014 opens in Autumn. The closing date is January 15, 2014. Offers will be made on April 16, 2014. If your child is transferring to junior or middle school, then the application process begins on November 5, 2013 with a deadline of January 15, 2014. Offers will be made on April 16, 2014. For secondary school applications, the application process is already open. The closing date is October 31, 2013. Offers will be made on March 3, 2014. If you are refused a place at your preferred school, you do have the right to appeal. For community and voluntary controlled schools, contact the admissions team at Kirklees Council. For voluntary aided, free, academy and trust schools, contact the school direct for information on the appeals procedure. Appeal hearings will take place in June and July 2014.

forget me not children’S hospice CHRISTMAS APPEAL

F

orget Me Not Children’s Hospice is asking readers of The Scallymag to support its ‘One Good Thing’ campaign this Christmas by donating toys, gifts and clothing to its stores.

The charity has 10 stores across West Yorkshire that need to stock up in the weeks leading up to the festive season. The ‘One Good Thing’ campaign asks everybody to donate one item that will in turn benefit the charity. Since it was launched at the beginning of the year, a number of quality items have been given to the stores. A host of fundraising events have been held and challenges undertaken in support of the campaign. Last year, gifts included dresses, toys, books, shirts and even ski suits, which the charity was able to sell and then use the funds to help children and families at the hospice. Clare-Marie Taylor, head of marketing at the hospice, said: “The ‘One Good Thing’ campaign is a wonderful idea and absolutely everyone can join in with it. “Whether you are an individual, part of a fundraising team or even at work, if we could all do our ‘One Good Thing’, it would make a huge difference to our stores and in turn help us to continue to provide the care and support we do to children and families.” Stores are located in Almondbury, Golcar, Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Lindley, Brighouse, Elland, Heckmondwike, Hebden Bridge, King Cross and The Mill, Batley, also takes collections on behalf of the hospice.

BUSINESSES TURN OUT TO SUPPORT HOSPICE

B

usinesses with charity at heart turned out to show their support for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice at a ‘99er’ event.

Hipperholme Grammar School at Bramley Lane, Hipperholme, hosted the event, which aimed to encourage corporate members to donate 99 pence a day to the hospice, building a sustainable income for the charity. Sue Oliver, marketing and admissions manager at the school, which has already pledged its support as a ‘99er’, said she was delighted that it had been chosen to host the networking event. She said: “The event provided the opportunity to find out more about the charity’s work as well as meet and network with like-minded, community business men and women.” The school supports the hospice in a variety of ways including one pupil raising funds by taking part in a charity skydive. The hospice has an annual fundraising target of £2.5 million and the ‘99er’ scheme provides a reliable source of income to enable the charity to provide quality end of life care for children and their families. For more information about the hospice or how to register as a ‘99er’, visit www.forgetmenotchild.co.uk.

If you require professional performers or entertainers for a special event such as a wedding, birthday or anniversary, the agency can help with that too – a solo singer, a string quartet or a stage show can all be arranged. OUT & ABOUT

C

ome October, when the weather turns colder and the sun hangs lower in the sky, you may find the task of persuading the children to leave the comforting warmth of the indoors and the glare of the television more difficult than usual.

But Autumn, with its hues of red, orange, brown and gold, is an amazing time to explore the natural world and there’s no place better to experience the season in all its colourful glory than at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden. Set amid 800 acres of breathtakingly beautiful countryside, the park, which became a designated World Heritage Site in 1986, boasts a Cistercian abbey, a Georgian water garden and a medieval deer park. There is much to see and do at the National Trust park, which is situated 12 miles north of Harrogate, but sometimes it’s the simple things in life that amuse children the most – at least, that’s what we discovered when we visited in midAutumn with our three. The children, aged 10, three and two enjoyed the picturesque walk from the courtyard, which houses a café, shop and other amenities, along the pushchair friendly route and down the fairly steep bank to the abbey. They spent hours happily kicking their way through the piles of freshly fallen leaves. As I looked on, I couldn’t help thinking there was something quite enchanting about watching the look of wonderment on our two-year-old daughter’s face as she delighted in throwing armfuls of the crunchy things into the air. The site is a magical place to visit at any time of the year but for me, there’s something very special about wrapping up warm, pulling on your

wellies and heading outdoors with the whole family in Autumn. Fountains Abbey is a place of discovery for little ones with a new adventure around every corner, whether it’s climbing among the 12th Century abbey ruins, using the many follies for a game of hide and seek, or skimming stones in the water garden created by John Aislabie. My three were quite content to roll down hills for an hour but if the park doesn’t tire them out, you can always head to the play area where there is enough to entertain children of all ages. Red, Sika and Fallow deer are all kept at the park, which provides a great opportunity for children to view these usually shy and timid animals. An array of children’s activities take place at the park throughout the year including everything from arts and crafts to outdoor theatre. Events to look out for this season include a family nature walk on October 5, ‘Make Like a Tree’ – a half term event on October 26 involving trails, a leafy challenge, and creating Autumnal artwork at Swanley Grange from leaves collected in the grounds, a geocaching taster day on October 30 and an opportunity to build a hibernation box for creepy crawlies between October 29 and October 31. On October 31 at the Studley tearoom, youngsters can join in the Halloween fun with a variety of seasonal games including apple bobbing, guess the weight of the pumpkin, how much candy is in the jar and of course, the obligatory fancy dress competition. A barbecue and Halloween themed food will also be available. The site is an historian’s paradise, so apart from the countryside, there’s plenty

for parents and grandparents to enjoy too including Fountains Hall, constructed by Stephen Proctor in 1597, St Mary’s Church, designed by William Burges and exhibitions in Fountains Mill and the Porter’s Lodge. Unless we’re very lucky, Autumn isn’t usually picnic weather so you can always head to Fountains Restaurant or one of the two tearooms on the estate to warm up, all of which sell a range of childfriendly food. The sit is open daily from 10am until 6pm though some of the amenities close earlier. The deer park is open from 7am but check the website for full details. Admission is free to National Trust and English Heritage members, otherwise adult admission is £8.60, children are £4.50 or a family ticket can be purchased for £21.80. We’ve visited Fountains Abbey many times. Each season brings with it a different view but I have to say as a quality family day out, I can’t fault it. By Elaine Jinks

HEALTH HORSES HELPING PEOPLE RESOLVING EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL ISSUES WITH THE HELP OF HORSES

F

amilies have to deal with all sorts of stresses and strains, from separation and divorce, emotional and lack of confidence issues, to behavioural problems and learning difficulties in children.

It is debateable whether there is such a thing as a ‘perfect family’ – each is completely unique with its own set of quirks and problems. But there are times in everyone’s life when we could all benefit from working through issues without feeling as though we are being judged. That is where equine assisted therapy can help. Julia Hall, who has run Equine Assisted Therapy for three years, said: “I offer equine assisted therapy to individuals, couples and families who want to take time and space to talk things through, to make changes and decisions that have left them feeling burdened or stuck. “The horse will connect with a person, never lying, manipulating, or subjecting them to any preconceived ideas. The horse will be sensitive and inquisitive while trying to understand hidden fear, anger, sadness or any other emotions a person might have.” Julia, an equine assisted practitioner and qualified psychotherapist with more than 20 years’ experience, works with her four horses, Cameo, Calypso, Minnie and Bobbie, at her premises near Slaithwaite. You do not need to be a horse owner or rider to take advantage of equine assisted therapy as all activities and learning are ground based, so no experience is necessary. “Sometimes, life can feel like pushing water uphill with a sieve, alone and isolated,” said Julia. “That no one understands and that you don’t want to make demands upon your friends and family because they seem too busy and have problems of their own. “You do not want to worry, or upset those close to you, so you end up bottling things up and become withdrawn from what is really going on inside you. This can be so true for troubled children, young people and families.” Julia works with children as young as three and says that equine assisted therapy is not designed to be a long term commitment. Clients often have weekly sessions for up to three weeks and then don’t return for further therapy with the horses, unless they feel a need. Bespoke group work and team building experiences are also available. Sessions start at £50 for one person, £60 for two or £70 for three. Julia said: “I do not give advice, I listen and talk with knowledge, understanding, empathy and compassion to help you to make the changes and choices that you have decided upon.” For more information visit www.equineassistedtherapy.co.uk.

HEALTH

W

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

e have all heard the age-old phrase, ‘laughter is the best medicine’, but is it true?

Laughter yoga is a new form of exercise aimed at not just improving physical fitness but boosting emotional well-being too. Huddersfield based, Christine Renshaw and Linda Collinge, who are both trained in laughter yoga, set up Laughter in Mind earlier this year after delivering a number of successful laughter yoga workshops for various

charities. Laughter yoga was developed in 1995 by Indian cardiologist, Dr Madan Kataria, who firmly believed that laughter was indeed the best medicine.

He worked with a handful of patients to see the positive effects that laughing had on their overall health and recovery. He then developed a number of simple laughter activities, interspersed with deep breathing, followed by a period of calming relaxation. The technique was so successful that it has since been adopted in over 60 countries. Christine said: “Laughter yoga is suitable for people of any age. We’ve been very busy running workshops in school with children, in residential homes with senior citizens, with guide groups and local community events and as team building activities for employers.” She said laughter yoga workshops are fun and uplifting with long lasting benefits. Unlike traditional yoga, it does not rely on postures, just simple laughter activities that aim to leave participants relaxed, refreshed and invigorated. It is also not dependent on a particular level of skill or agility, making it an inclusive and non-competitive activity. Linda said: “The powerful effects of laughter are well researched and documented. “ Laughter reduces the levels of stress hormones, boosts self confidence and creativity, improves heart health, increases oxygen intake, boosts the immune system, relieves pain naturally, lowers blood sugar

quickly, promotes deep breathing aiding overall well-being and it’s great fun. “People tell us that they feel uplifted and energised after participating. She said schools and other youth organisations see the benefits of laughter yoga sessions as they promote good health, emotional development and help to support self confidence and creativity. Simple laughter exercises increase the brain’s supply of oxygen which reduces stress and helps children stay focused for longer, improving their concentration in the classroom. Christine said: “Children love the experience and the feedback has been extremely positive including comments like: ‘It was brilliant, when can we do it again?’.” For more information about Laughter In Mind workshops, visit www. laughterinmind.co.uk.

HELP KIDS WRAP UP WITH THE WINTER COAT CAMPAIGN Uniform Exchange, the Huddersfield organisation that helps struggling families by providing children with recycled school uniform, is launching a winter coat campaign. Kate France, who set up the organisation two years ago to help those affected by the cuts to school uniform grants, said: “Around 10,000 grants were given out by Kirklees Council in 2010, so all of those families still need our help – and that’s just the ones that we know of. There will be even more that didn’t know the grant was available and are finding it tough to kit out their children properly.” She said she had heard reports from one school of children being sent in inappropriate or inadequate clothing in freezing temperatures because their families could not afford to shell out on a warm winter coat, jumper or footwear designed for bad weather. She said

parents and carers had also reportedly turned up at school gates in just a t-shirt, despite there being snow on the ground. As a direct result, Uniform Exchange is appealing to schools, teachers and parents to support its campaign and recycle not only unwanted school uniform but winter coats for needy children and their families. Kate said she would like to roll the campaign out across Huddersfield and the surrounding area and is keen to encourage people to bag their used and unwanted coats up when clearing out wardrobes and cupboards in time for October half term. The organisation would also like donations of hats, scarves and gloves but will take all types of clothes, regardless of their condition. Its only source of income is from the sale of rags – clothes in too poor a condition to be passed on. Winter coats and other items can be

dropped off at local Sure Start Centres or at the Cathedral Charity Shop, Brook Street, Huddersfield. A list can be found at www.uniform-exchange.org. Collections can also be arranged at schools. Kate said: “I would also like to set up an emergency shoe fund in the future. At present we don’t tend to give shoes unless the family are desperate. Saying that, of all the requests for help I’ve received since 2011, I have never had to turn anyone away.” Uniform Exchange currently operates out of temporary premises at St Thomas’ Road, Huddersfield, but is searching for a permanent home. If you can help or if you’re in need of school uniform, you can visit the website and download an application form, contact the organisation at www. facebook.com/uniformexchange or telephone Kate on 07955 724789.

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. We aim to list as many activities for 0-5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is up-to-date (there will probably be some changes every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

NEWS RIDING THE RAILS ON THE PENISTONE LINE

T

he Penistone Line Partnership celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion it has produced a free guide to family fun on the railway.

The partnership is a community group, working to protect and enhance the railway line between Huddersfield and Sheffield. Its new guide incorporates 20 fun things to do within easy reach of the stations along the Penistone Line. Rowena Chantler, community rail officer with the partnership, said: “We tried to keep the 20 things as family-friendly as possible. “When you take a day out by train, the journey becomes part of the experience. Because you are not driving, you have time to share more of the journey with your child, talking about the view through the window, looking for landmarks such as Emley Moor mast, which appears and disappears as you travel along, or counting off the stations to your destination. “You can take things down a gear and arrive ready to enjoy the rest of your day out.” The Penistone Line offers the opportunity to visit buggy and cycle friendly routes along the Trans Pennine Trail, which directly links stations at Penistone, Silkstone Common, Shepley and Stockmoor. Bikes can be hired from Cycle Penistone to explore the countryside or visit the quirky vintage cinemas, independent shops and cafes at destinations along the line. Many attractions situated on the line are free, including the recently opened Experience Barnsley, located in Barnsley Town Hall. This tells the story of the town in a fun and interactive way using items given by local people. Research for the new guide involved talking to families using the Penistone Line, many of whom were unfamiliar with train travel. The project is part of a bigger initiative to raise awareness of the line and encourage families to discover the many destinations it has to offer. It is funded by East Peak Innovation Partnership leader programme, which distributes funding from the Rural Development Programme for England, jointly funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the European Union. The guide includes information on purchasing tickets, tips for reading timetables and is available from staffed train stations, libraries and other information points in the locality. If you would like a free copy to be posted to you, email PenLinePship@gmail.com.

OUT & ABOUT National Railway Museum Leeman Road York YO26 4XJ TEL 08448 153139 www.nrm.org.uk

T

he National Railway Museum (NRM), which was fortunately saved from closure earlier this year, is undoubtedly a trainspotter’s paradise. Now for many of you, that will conjure up images of a bespectacled, anorak-clad geek standing on a footbridge, scribbling down numbers in a battered old notebook on a drizzly Sunday morning. I’m afraid my 10-year-old son, dressed in his trendy Vans and Pearl Jam t-shirt, doesn’t quite fit the bill, yet we’ve been visiting the NRM with him ever since he first excitedly babbled the words, ‘choo choo’ and illustrated his point by moving his arms round and round like the wheels of a runaway train. Admittedly, at first it was his passion for Thomas the Tank Engine that would prompt our visits to the museum, which often plays host to the ever popular ‘Days Out With Thomas’ events, complete with steam engine rides and of course, the Fat Controller. However, as he’s got older, he’s naturally become curious about the development of the railways from the first steam locomotives and Stephenson’s Rocket to the futuristic Japanese Bullet Train – an interest that has manifested itself in a collection of track and engines, currently housed under his bed. For an introduction to this important mode of transport and its impact on Britain, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the NRM whatever the age of your children. Not only that, it’s a great place to visit on a wet and windy Autumn day, as the bulk of its exhibits

are indoors. With more than 100 rail vehicles on site at any one time, there is lots to explore at the NRM. From the romance of one of the nation’s most famous steam engines, The Flying Scotsman, which is currently being restored at the museum, to the Mallard, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary of setting a new steam locomotive world speed record of 126mph – a record that still stands today. From October 26, there will be a second chance to see all six of the surviving A4 locomotives around the turntable. The exhibition also includes the Mallard experience – a simulator ride that recreates the Mallard’s record breaking run. Station Hall is home to the largest collection of royal carriages in the world including Queen Victoria’s opulent ‘palace on wheels’ and the Royal Saloon built for King George VI during the Second World War. For the real enthusiast, The Works is well worth a visit – the museum’s workshop where engineers conserve and restore the historic locomotives, carriages and wagons. You can also track train movements on the East Coast Main Line using the museum’s signalling display, but the highlight for our children was watching the trains on the real railway from the viewing balcony overlooking York Station. The museum, which is completely pushchair friendly, hosts a variety of family activities throughout the year including interactive science shows and storytelling

sessions for those under six-years-old. These take place at 11.30am and 3.30pm on weekends during term-time. If it is dry, younger children will also love the outdoor play area and miniature railway. The museum boasts two cafés, one of which is outdoors, a restaurant and from September, a chance to experience afternoon tea in a traditional dining carriage – that may be one best kept for mums and dads when the grandparents have kindly volunteered to babysit! Having visited all three, the selection and quality of food has always been best at the Dining Car Restaurant, which you will find in Station Hall. It is completely free to visit the NRM, though donations are welcome, and it is open daily from 10am to 6pm apart from three days at Christmas. Our youngest appears to be following in his older brother’s footsteps when it comes to his love of trains, so I anticipate many more visits to the museum in the coming years. In fact, my husband said: “I’d love to spend a whole day there and have the time to read all the exhibition information.” Sadly, running after three very active children doesn’t always allow for such things – nevermind Gary, only another 18 years or so to go! Let’s hope the museum is safe from cuts and closure threats until then, it would be a sad day indeed if the nation lost such a valuable treasure. By Elaine Jinks

FOCUS ON FOCUS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE — PUTTING ABUSE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

W

hen celebrities break up, it inevitably makes headline news, but when the split is due to alleged domestic abuse, it can throw a taboo topic into the spotlight. The recent pictures snapped of celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson and her husband, Charles Saatchi, with his hands to her throat outside a London restaurant, has highlighted the extent of the problem, which according to many domestic violence charities is shrouded in myth and grossly misunderstood. According to Women’s Aid statistics, one in four women and one is six men will suffer domestic abuse at some point in their lives, yet instances remain largely hidden and unreported. Some victims feel ashamed, blame themselves, still love their partner and don’t want to see them punished or believe it was a one-off incident and are simply too frightened to do anything about it. Jennifer Stroud, a family law solicitor at Makin Dixon, Queen Street, Huddersfield, said: “There are many misconceptions about what constitutes domestic abuse. Indeed, at Makin Dixon, we see many clients who will disclose that their partner is verbally abusive towards them, controls their finances or restricts their daily activities, but they fail to recognise that that in itself is a form of domestic abuse. “Actual physical abuse, such as that which Nigella’s husband was recently cautioned for, is only one aspect of

domestic abuse. It can include emotional, psychological, sexual and verbal abuse, none of which anybody should be subjected to or tolerate.” Children brought up in an abusive environment are also at risk of suffering harm, whether physical or emotional. There are many ways in which victims can protect themselves and their children, including but not solely restricted to reporting incidents to the police. There are many organisations in Kirklees that can offer advice, assistance and support including Women’s Aid, which can offer refuge accommodation, Kirklees Domestic Violence Team, WomenCentre Kirklees and the West Yorkshire Police Safeguarding Unit. Jennifer, who along with her colleague, Natalie Gibson, is a domestic violence specialist, said: “At Makin Dixon, we too offer advice and legal representation to the victims of domestic abuse. Our services range from emergency court applications, to warning letters, to simply offering advice and a listening ear. “Orders to protect victims of domestic violence and their children can be obtained on an emergency basis the same day, and in many instances, legal aid for such applications is still available.” Jennifer is a Law Society Family Law Advanced Panel member with a specialism in domestic abuse and Natalie is a resolution accredited specialist in domestic abuse. If you require professional, impartial advice on any of the issues raised in the article, please contact them on 01484 515993 or visit the website at www. makindixon.co.uk.

NEWS

T

he Scallymag has teamed up with fairandfunky to support One World Week this Autumn in a bid to recycle and reduce waste. One World Week 2013 runs from October 20 and community interest company, fairandfunky, will be delivering a whole host of school workshops and creating Holmfirth’s very own One World Cafe and One World Market with support from The Scallymag. Helen Robinson, who runs the business with Sophie Bebb, said: “The theme for One World Week is ‘More Than Enough?’, focussing on the challenge to aspire not to have more but to be more. “All fairandfunky workshops encourage participants to think about their sense of place in the world and the positive steps they can take locally, nationally and globally to make a difference. “The One World Week workshops will do just that and empower people to take their own little steps to change the world. At the school workshops, children will make friendship bracelets from plastic bags, will work together to create

ONE WORLD

WEEK a ‘No More Waste’ art exhibition, will make boats from old copies of The Scallymag and write their very own pledge to take action to change the world. The pledges will be added to trees at Holmfirth Market and will also be sent to Jason McCartney MP for the Colne Valley. Elaine Jinks-Turner, Editor of The Scallymag, said: “We are very pleased and proud to be able to support fairandfunky’s work in this way. “Recycling surplus magazines may only be a small step on our part, but as Helen and Sophie rightly say, it is small, positive steps that help to change the world and people’s attitudes towards

reducing waste.” The workshops are inspired by the fact that an average family throws away six trees worth of paper every year, 60 per cent of all waste could be recycled and supermarkets give away an average of 290 plastic bags per person each year. On October 24, the upper floor of Holmfirth Market will become a One World Cafe, showcasing the school art exhibition as well as inviting people to add to the six pledge trees. A number of stalls will also be selling fairtrade, ethical and recycled goods. On October 26, a One World Market will bring together a host of community organisations that work to make positive changes that benefit the environment. As part of Holmfirth’s Food and Drink Festival month, Fairandfunky will also be hosting a Family Food Day at Holmfirth Market on September 22 from 10am to 4pm. There will be over 30 unique stalls, free family workshops delivered by fairandfunky, Holme Baked and the Holme Valley Gardening Network as well as a children’s competition for those under the age of 12.

ONE GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER

O

ne Good Turn is a charity which aims to help needy families across Kirklees, whether it’s help in furnishing a flat or clothes for the children. Sophia Crawshaw, its founder, said it all started two years ago when she was searching charity shops for a denim jacket to customise for her daughter. The cheapest was £10 so she asked her Facebook friends and was offered four jackets. She then joined a Huddersfield based swap group on the social networking site and gave lots of unwanted items away. The group has since closed but undeterred, Sophia set up her own swap shop. She said: “At first it was friends that joined and then friends of friends. Most of the items then started to be handed to me personally to list on the group and I had dozens of people coming to my house to collect items. Basically, One Good Turn evolved naturally due to the high demand.” The group now meets regularly at the Head of Steam, St George’s Square, Huddersfield, every Wednesday from 9am

to 11am. More than 150 people attend the coffee mornings and the charity now helps families that need furniture, clothes, items for babies and children, books and bric-a-brac. Those that attend enjoy a £2.50 cooked breakfast, a coffee and a chat while the members of the charity hand out items to the beneficiaries. A raffle is held every week and representatives from the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Sure Start or the Well Women Centre are often in attendance. During school holidays, parents can still attend as games and events are run for children and on occasions a mobile library is provided. On Facebook, there is also an area where members can chat, view advertised jobs and One Good Turn also runs a charity auction site, using the money raised to buy white goods and other items for low income families. Sophia said: “We do not means test, we understand that many people and families are working poor and in some instances worse off than families relying on welfare. “We have successfully won three grants so far from Kirklees Community

First which has helped us to gain badly needed storage, a trailer, storage containers, volunteer training uniforms, software and expenses for travel costs. “Our ambition is to get a grant for a van which we desperately need to deliver the white goods. We currently use a trailer, which is great for smaller items, but very hard work when you have 30 plus deliveries to make!” Sophia now hopes to expand the charity to the Dewsbury and Batley area but her vision is to see a One Good Turn coffee morning and supporting Facebook group in every area. Referrals for goods can be made via a referrals form available on the charity’s website. For more information, visit www. freeonegoodturn.com.

eVENTS ‘SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS’

T

he village of Lindley will unite this Autumn to celebrate one of England’s favourite native fruits - the humble apple.

The first Lindley Apple Day will be held on Saturday October 19 and promises to be a fun filled festival for all the family. Children will be able to enjoy traditional games of apple bobbing. There will also be pruning and pressing demonstrations, an apple pie competition and it is hoped that an apple tree will be planted in the village to mark the occasion. A host of local businesses have offered to lend their support to the event by

selling apple themed produce on the day and decorating shop window displays with the fruit. Carl Livsey Family Butchers at Lidget Street will be making pork and apple sausages for the occasion, while Eric’s Restaurant, situated on the same street, will be offering apple cocktails to its guests. The Children’s Bookshop will transform it’s window display for the event, promoting apple related books such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and classic fairytales such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ David Kendall-Smith, of ‘Udders Orchard, is helping to organise the event and said: “There will also be a cider trail but full details are still to be finalised. “We hope to promote the apple and demonstrate the myriad possibilities of the fruit, as well as help get people into Lindley to see what it has to offer.” The main demonstrations will

wo local mums are hosting a free Bump, Baby and Toddler Show for new and expectant parents.

The show will be held at The Shay Stadium, Shaw Hill, Halifax, on Sunday October 6 at 11am and goody bags will be available for the first 200 visitors. Hosted by Andrea Wallman and Zoe Willows, the show will include a variety of stands offering products and services for families, as well as presentations on relationships, being a birth partner, how to avoid and cope with toddler tantrums, top tips for a straight forward birth and advice on dogs and babies. Andrea, owner of The Best Start, which provides courses, workshops, meetups for parents and a local magazine, wanted to extend the service she already offers. She said: “In order to continue to support new and expectant parents on their parenting journey, we decided to organise The Best Start Baby and Toddler Show. “Our idea was to bring together local groups, businesses and services under one roof, providing an accessible and informative event packed with everything needed from bump to beyond.” Zoe, a former events organiser and now full-time mum, said: “As a first time mum, I would have loved to have been able to come to an event like this when my son was born 14 months ago. “As well as organising, I am looking forward to being there to find out what products and services are now available to us now that he is toddling.” “We are getting fantastic support from local businesses which are keen to exhibit at our event and I hope many mums, dads and partners come down on the day to find out about what is available for them and their children.” The enterprising pair hope to raise funds for The Forget Me Not Trust and Calderdale Home Start by selling raffle tickets ahead of the show and at the event, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs. The event is sponsored by babyballet, the Print Bureau and SP Fitness Solutions. For more information, visit www.thebeststart.co.uk or www.facebook. com/halifaxbabyshow. W

hether your child is just starting school and getting to grips with the basics or a seasoned reader, The Children’s Bookshop has a wonderful selection of autumnal books available to cosy up with.

Autumn Reads

Jellybean Goes to School by Margaret Roc, illustrated by Laura Hughes (£6.99) This is a gentle story about starting school and last minute worries about leaving mum. Perfect for little ones who are settling in to reception year this September. Moles Harvest Moon by Judi Abbot (£5.99) Mole wants to make a harvest feast but is missing some ingredients. He goes with some friends to look for food, but who’s following them? The quicker they walk, the quicker the shadows follow them. They have a plan to scare them off with the help of a pumpkin and the harvest moon, who helps them find their way home. Supper is prepared and there are some unexpected guests! The Best Gift Of All by Jonathan Emmett, illustrated by Vanessa Cabban (£5.99) It’s Autumn, the leaves are falling and it has been raining all week. Mole is missing his friends, especially rabbit, but doesn’t want to get wet so he travels via a tunnel. Along the way he meets up with squirrel and hedgehog and although it’s not their usual way of travelling, they burrow their way to rabbit’s home, who is very pleased to see her unexpected visitors. Dry Bones by Kate Edmunds (£5.99) The long remembered rhyme about the ‘foot bone connected to’ … and so it goes on, in a big square format with lively pictures of the skeleton and how he is put together. Little ones will love the clear pictures and the rhyming text.

Focus on CHILDCARE WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A NURSERY By Joanne Bradbury-Wood, owner of Water’s Edge Children’s Day Nursery, Elland

W

hen choosing a nursery it’s really important that both you and your child are comfortable and happy with the choice you make. I always recommend that parents visit a number of different nurseries before making a final decision, that way you will realise which provision suits your family the best. Remember your first impressions when you walk through the door. Were the staff friendly, relaxed, calm and confident? Was it clean, warm and welcoming? Was the equipment in a good state of repair? Ask as many questions as you can think of. What sort of meals are provided and at what time? Are they freshly prepared on the premises? Are the menus changed regularly? Take note if the children in the nursery look happy and well occupied. Is there a variety of play equipment for them to use and are the staff involved in their play? Can children take their own toys, such as their favourite teddy bear as a comforter? Ask about children to staff ratios and how the nursery ensures that children are cared for safely in the nursery and on outings. Does the nursery have Early Years Professional Status (EYPS)? This is a leading status which was introduced in 2007 for leading excellent practice within settings. The status holds a variety of roles and responsibilities within Early Years, promoting excellent personal practice and the ability to lead and inspire colleagues. Ask about first aid procedures, guidelines state that one person in the building should be first aid trained, however, I feel it’s beneficial to have as many staff as possible who are first aid trained and at least 50 per cent of the practitioners here have completed first aid training. Does the nursery have an open door policy so you can visit whenever you like to see your child and go into their unit where they play, as well as being able to have a show round without making an appointment. Before being shown round, you should be expected to show some form of identification for security and child protection reasons. Is the phone answered quickly? It is comforting for you to know that if you need to contact the nursery when your child is there that someone will be able to answer you promptly. Ensure the nursery that you choose is registered with Ofsted. The Ofsted registration certificate should be displayed together with a current certificate of insurance. You should ask to see a copy of Ofsted’s most recent inspection report and this will also be available on the Ofsted website. Parents should feel as happy to leave their child in nursery for a few hours or the day as they would with a trusted relative. So it’s important that the staff and management at your child’s nursery are always available to chat with you and discuss any concerns. For a full list of nurseries in your area visit your local Children’s Information Service.
