WILL HIRING A NANNY SAVE YOU MONEY?
M
any working parents may feel that hiring a nanny is a luxury afforded only by the rich and famous but Huddersfield and Holmfirth Nannies is keen to put that myth to bed.
Rachel Bradley, who has more than 20 years’ worth of childcare experience, took over the agency in 2011 and as mum to two young children, understands the emotional strain parents feel when faced with having to leave their child to return to work. She said: “There are a variety of different childcare options. Childminders and day nurseries are the best known ones but I think that nannies are often overlooked because they are seen as an expensive option only affordable to the rich and famous. “This may have been the case in the past, however, nowadays with the introduction of Ofsted registered nannies, parents can put their childcare vouchers towards the cost of a nanny’s salary.” For families with two or more children requiring regular childcare, a nanny can often be the most cost effective option as she is payable on an hourly rate, rather than per child. A nanny can also help to resolve childcare issues for parents who work shift patterns. The average opening and closing times of nurseries, childminders and out-of-school clubs is 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday. However, nannies can be flexible for those that work nights and weekends. H&H Nannies, which has been

running since 2009, serves Kirklees as well as Halifax and Bradford. Rachel said: “In this day and age children are woken up at the crack of dawn, breakfast is a rushed affair or even delayed until they arrive at nursery, their childminder or breakfast club at 7.30am. “They are out of the house all day, being stimulated to the max in a noisy room. As adults we all need some time to relax, be in our own surroundings and to have a little quiet time, so why should it be any different for children? “A nanny will take your children where you would like them to go, whether it is to the park to feed the ducks, the library or spending an afternoon at home drawing or baking.” While a nanny’s duties are primarily to care for the children, she can also lend a hand with tasks such as washing and ironing children’s clothes, cooking their
meals or for an older child, supervising homework, taking care of the school run and accompanying them to after school activities. All H&H Nannies have at least two years’ childcare experience and/or at least a level 2 qualification. They are interviewed face to face, must have completed a 12 hour paediatric first aid course and have a recent DBS check. “References are thoroughly checked,” said Rachel. “Only those nannies most suited to a family’s requirements will be put forward for a family to meet. H&H Nannies can place night nannies, mother’s help , before and after school nannies, babysitters, and we provide emergency cover to parents, day nurseries and out of school clubs.” Parents can feel daunted by employing a nanny but there are a number of payroll companies that can deal with the legalities on your behalf. There is no fee for families or nannies to register with Huddersfield and Holmfirth Nannies. For more information visit www. huddersfieldandholmfirthnannies.co.uk.

NEWS JOIN THE LIMELIGHT AT NEW DANCE STUDIO
F
or a while, the question on everyone in Rastrick’s lips has been the same. What’s behind the green door?
The answer: The Limelight Studio, a bespoke dance space and party venue opened by the popular Limelight Theatre School. The old workshop and ugly gates that stood for so many years are gone, the eyesores replaced by a brand new building with a mirrored studio, waiting area and fully equipped kitchen. The venue now hosts Limelight’s wide range of classes, from pre-school dancing with the Boogie Babes to Zumba and Fitsteps for those who want
to have fun and keep fit. There’s street dance, tap for all ages and for any young actors out there, drama and musical theatre too. All the classes are pay-as-yougo which means flexibility for parents and no expensive termly fees. Co-owner, Lisa McCann, said: “Moving into our own studio allows us to expand our timetable and add more classes. “For those with busy schedules, we’ll be adding our first weekend fitness sessions, every Saturday at 10am. “I love dancing in here and everything has been designed with our performers in mind. The custom lime green dance floor is cushioned and the mirrored wall helps everyone see what’s going on.” The studio also transforms into an amazing party venue with coloured lights, a mirror ball and ultra violet glowing
PRIMARY SCHOOLS ARE PITCH PERFECT
H
ipperholme Grammar School hosted a choral workshop for nearly 100 primary school children who went on to perform at Bradford Cathedral.
The workshop, for pupils in years three, four and five, was held at the school at Bramely Lane, Hipperholme and included singing in rounds, learning a mini anthem, singing a hymn and a chant in Latin and practising a whole group song. The pupils also perfected an interpretation of ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd-Webber before travelling to Bradford Cathedral to perform before parents and friends. Alex Woodrow, Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral, said: “It was an excellent day with a really good take-up and loads of positivity. There was much to celebrate!” The event, in its second year, included solo performances by Hipperholme Grammar School pupils, Emilia Cooper and Lia Brehmenr, who are both cathedral choristers and choral scholars at the school. One parent commented: “Our daughters came to the workshop for the first time. They both had an amazing day filled with new experiences and to end the day singing in the cathedral was magnificent.

surprises. Limelight parties will include room hire, fantastic disco entertainment and use of the attached kitchen in a single all-inclusive package. Lisa’s husband, James, said: “Why book a dusty, cold church hall and separate entertainment? “Switching on our party lights offers a real “wow” moment for children and their parents. It’s my favourite bit!” James has entertained at children’s parties for years and promises party dances, unique games, cheerleading, parachute games, prizes and all your favourite songs at every Limelight party. For more information visit www. limelighttheatre.biz or call Lisa on 07779 154126 to discuss classes or James on 07988 890317 to ask about party availability.
“The singing was breath-taking – what they managed to achieve in such a short time was incredible.” Hipperholme Grammar School offers a Choral Scholarship to pupils joining the senior school in year seven. It is awarded to children who have completed a period as a probationary chorister at Bradford Cathedral and are promoted to full chorister.
News DANCE SCHOOL CHILDREN TAKE TO THE STAGE
T
he Audrey Spencer Theatre School of Dance has been established for over 60 years and caters for children aged two to 19.
Classes include ballet, tap, modern jazz, theatre craft, gymnastics, conditioning, street dance, musical theatre and tots classes. Students participate in examinations, shows, concerts and festivals and workshops are offered regularly by professionals in ballet, West End productions or Disney films and shows.
Classes, which take place at Queen Street South Studios in Huddersfield and at the University of Huddersfield, build confidence, discipline, good posture and have many health benefits. School principal, Joanne Perkins, said: “It also has a social aspect where children meet new people and learn to work with a variety of peers leading to new, positive and often life-long friendships. “If students want to pursue dance to a more professional level then they have the opportunity and support from us to do so. Many of our past pupils have gone on to have successful careers in the West End, on cruise ships, on television, in film and in teaching.” Shows are often held at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, giving students the opportunity to display their talent. Joanne, who trained with and took over the running of the school from Audrey Spencer, is a member of the International Dance Teachers Association.
She has been dancing since the tender age of five and has worked in a number of dance schools throughout the UK, has worked in Germany and has a great love of dance teaching. A variety of new classes and workshops have been introduced including street dance, gymnastics, drama and vocal coaching which means alongside the traditional and classical dance training, pupils can keep up with the latest genres. For more information visit www. audreyspencerdanceschool.co.uk or telephone 07983 419570.
RUGby tots rule!
R
ugby has always been at the heart of Yorkshire sport and there is no better way to spark your child’s enthusiasm for the game by heading to a Rugbytots class, especially if they love meeting new children and have plenty of energy to run off.
We caught up with Jonathan Prescott of Huddersfield Rugbytots to find out more... Rugbytots is the UK’s first rugby specific play programme for young children between the ages of two and seven. It uses the multiple skills of rugby to create a fun and enjoyable environment while developing basic core motor skills. Jonathan said: “Each session aims to develop hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, as well as enhancing social and psychological attributes through a series of games and exercises.” Rugbytots has become quite the phenomenon and runs classes throughout the UK and locally in locations all over Huddersfield. “The classes have proved to be extremely popular with children and parents alike,” said Jonathan, “They encourage teamwork, sharing and allow friendships to develop and parent participation means fun, quality, sporting development time is had by both parent and child.” “In Huddersfield, Rugbytots is in its fourth year and continues to grow - we run classes both in and out of school.” Terms, dates and times of all classes can be found at www. Rugbytots.co.uk or contact Jonathan on 0845 313 3247 or 07778 588882.

Out and about OAKWELL MUSIC working FESTIVAL chimp productions
Oakwell Hall Country Park Nutter Lane, Birstall, Batley West Yorkshire, WF17 9LG www.oakwellfestival.co.uk ome time ago I wrote a blog post for The Scallymag website, ‘Would You Take Your Child to a Rock Concert?’ As a lifelong music fan, I can tell you the answer was a resounding ‘Yes’.
S
However, despite my best efforts to guide my eldest towards liking Pearl Jam, I have come to realise that no matter what sounds spewed from my stereo as a youth (and still do, although now it’s an Ipod), it’s impossible to influence your children’s musical taste one way or the other. If they like it, they like it and if they don’t, they’ll tell you. It’s that simple. But I do think no matter what you like to listen to, music plays a huge part in shaping and sometimes defining us from a very young age. That’s why it’s never too early to introduce your little ones to live music, whatever the genre may be. The Oakwell Music Festival, which will take place at Oakwell Hall Country Park at Birstall, Batley, on July 12 this Summer promises to be a fabulous family friendly event and the perfect opportunity to introduce children to the music scene. It is the largest one-day event of its kind in West Yorkshire and will be headlined by Brit Award nominees, The Feeling. Over half of the remaining line up hails from Yorkshire which means that Oakwell Music Festival is a truly local event. The festival will boast a large family entertainment area which includes bouncy castles and slides and a fairground, so you and the kids can have a break from the music. There will also be a trading area with a selection of food and drink on offer – much of which will be local as the festival organisers are determined to use nearby resources where possible and encourage community involvement. Other acts include Dodgy, Stooshe, Rupert Stroud, Wolf Club, 4th St Traffic, Apollo Junction, Izzy Thomas, Grace Solero, The Hijacked, The Ainsley Band, Rory Hoy, Jade Helliwell and Broken Flowers. Tickets cost £25 for adults, £10 for children and tots under the age of three are free. For more information visit www. oakwellfestival.co.uk.

FORGET ME NOT CHILDREN’s HOSPICE THE SCALLYMAG SUPPORTS FORGET ME NOT FOR A THIRD YEAR
T
he Scallymag is delighted to announce that it will be continuing to support Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as its chosen charity for a third year.
The Huddersfield based hospice provides vital support to children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Elaine Jinks-Turner, Editor of The Scallymag, said: “We have built up a very strong relationship with the hospice and its staff and feel privileged to be able to offer our support by raising awareness of their work and fundraising campaigns for another year.” The Scallymag provides free advertising space to its charity of choice, access to a photographer for marketing purposes and to provide family portraits of those supported by the hospice. It also donates a percentage of profits from advertising revenue raised. Clare-Marie Taylor, head of marketing at the hospice, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to The Scallymag for choosing Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as their charity of choice again for 2015. “The support we received from the magazine is fantastic and helps to spread our key messages and raise awareness of the support we can offer to families across West Yorkshire.”
CHARITY UPDATE
R
yan Grint, marketing and PR assistant at the hospice tells us about the charity’s plans for 2015:
We have more than doubled the number of children we care for since this time last year, currently supporting over 110 families across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. Earlier this year, one of the families who we support took over our Facebook page for a full week, detailing the precious moments they have every day thanks to the support of Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. Throughout the week a number of the services which Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice offers were highlighted including hydrotherapy, sensory play and hospice at home care. Please ‘like’ our Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest day to day developments at the charity and for more insights into the support we give to local families. This year the charity is expecting to continue to increase the number of families they support across West Yorkshire. It must raise £3.2million each year to continue doing the work it does and with just 4% of this coming from government funding, the support of the local community is vital. Whether it is taking on a challenge, attending a fundraising event or even signing up to become a regular giver, your support will help the charity to reach out to more and more families in 2015.
HOSPICE SHOPS
F
orget Me Not Children’s Hospice currently has nine shops located across Calderdale and Kirklees plus an eBay shop.

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. We aim to list as many activities for 0-5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is up-to-date (there will probably be some changes every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

Crafty Kids!
S
pring is finally here – the first buds are beginning to show, farmers are busy lambing and there’s nothing quite like the sight of a bright yellow chick to make you think of Easter.
Here, Alison Lester of The Rose Garden shows us a great way to keep kids entertained this coming holiday with a super Spring craft.
Easter Sock Bunny Chocolate alone is not enough to keep the kids occupied during the two week Easter Holiday, so why don’t you get them making their very own Easter Sock Bunnies. Almost every home must have a supply of odd socks or socks that have the odd hole, what better way to make use of these than making this cute bunny!
You will need: An old sock Toy stuffing Strong Thread Scissors
Method: 1. Start by stuffing your old sock from toe to heel. 2. Tie off a small part of the toe to make your bunny tail, secure it by wrapping some strong thread around it and tying a knot. 3. Next tie off the body (about two thirds of the way between the toe and heel), secure with thread. 4. Lastly tie off the head in the same way (your head should be smaller than the body). 5. The floppy ears will be made from the part that is left, lay it flat and use the scissors to cut this part down the middle, to form two ears. Use the scissors to shape each part into an ear shape. 6. To finish your rabbit you can add a face using a pen, embroidery or googly eyes, add a bow round its neck or even a pompom for a tail! The Rose Garden is a small business based in Brighouse and specializes in homemade crafts, bunting, jewellery and gifts.
FEED THE BIRDS with Have you been taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this Spring? Join in the fun with this fabulous bird feeder craft from our friends at fairandfunky.
You will need:
An old juice carton, an old carrier bag, scissors, string and PVA glue.
Method
Your first job is to rinse out your juice carton! Next, you need to lie the carton down and cut a hole in the middle of one side. It can be tricky to pierce the carton so do please be careful. This hole is where you will put your tit-bits for the birds so it needs to be big…..but not too big. Then on either side of your
12
juice carton cut little triangular flaps for the wings. Remember to only cut 2 sides of your triangle otherwise you’ll cut the wings off! The next bit is the messy bit – cut up an old carrier bag into bits and then stick all over your juice carton, adding eyes and a beak and other feathery details as required. Finally, using scissors, pierce a hole across the top to thread through some string so you can hang the finished feeder in your garden. In making your bird feeder you are taking more than one step to change the world! You are recycling, saving food scraps and encouraging wildlife to your garden.
COMMUNITY BAKING BREAD IN A NEW COMMUNITY KITCHEN
C
arole Roberts founded the community interest company, LoveBread, three years ago. Here she tells us about the organisation’s latest venture – a community kitchen, which will see even more children learning baking skills.
DRUMMING UP SUPPORT FOR FAIRTRADE
O
n World Fairtrade Day 2015 the Festival of Folk and fairandfunky will be drumming up support for Fairtrade with family workshops, musicians, stalls and exhibitions. The event will take place at Holmfirth Market on May 9 and will include the launch of the ‘Cotton on to Fairtrade’ exhibition from Holme Valley Fairtrade. Visitors will have the chance to see a selection of celebrity signed Fairtrade cotton bags, including Huddersfield’s own Patrick Stewart and Annie Lennox, before they are raffled off. Stalls will fill the marketplace and a drop in fairandfunky SCRAPtastic workshop invites people of all ages to create marvellous musical instruments out of junk. Throughout the day artists from the festival will be popping in to perform – singers, dancers and drummers are all lined up to entertain.
In 2012, two friends and I started LoveBread, a community supported real bread bakery in Brighouse. Two years ago, our units at Number 7 Martin Street were an empty warehouse, but now they’re a great space – a bakery, outdoor baking area and a brand new community kitchen. LoveBread is a social enterprise. We run on a rota system of bakers, supported by a large team of amazing, dedicated volunteers. Working on a not-for-profit basis, we aim not only to bake great bread for our local community but also to pass on the skills, knowledge and techniques needed to make your own. Since opening, regular breadmaking workshops have run monthly. We run workshops for schools, scouting groups, children’s centres, birthday parties and private sessions. These have proved really popular, with lots of repeat and regular visitors. We even convinced some of them to become volunteers and now some of those volunteers are bakers! In fact, the increase in bread business and demand for workshops has led to the completion of our latest project. Funded by the Big Lottery and Unltd, the community kitchen will increase capacity for workshops and for production. It has eight separate workstations, a large demonstration space, seating area and uninterrupted views over Brighouse. The aim is to get people baking and cooking, engaging with food and ingredients. We are interested in the therapeutic and social benefits of baking too. The community kitchen will not just be for breadmaking. We will be inviting other local food producers to run events and workshops. The kitchen will also be available for small and start-up catering businesses to hire. The dates for our regular workshops are already booking fast, and we will be adding many more to this. This will include boys’ baking sessions, grandparent/grandchildren sessions, holiday activities, drop-in bakes, social enterprise events and lots more. The bakery is open Monday to Saturday (closed Wednesday) between 10am and 12pm. Bread is available every day from Ryecorn Wholefoods, Bethel Street, Brighouse and workshop details are available online at www.lovebread.org.uk. By Carole Roberts
WEAR ODD SOCKS AND SHOW SUPPORT World Down’s Syndrome Day is being celebrated in Huddersfield this year by wearing odd socks. March 21 will mark the 10th anniversary of World Down’s Syndrome Day by raising awareness with the theme ‘Lots of Socks’, which asks supporters to wear odd socks, brightly coloured socks or simply lots of them! The date was chosen because it represents the extra third chromosome or chromosome 21, common to all those who have Down’s syndrome. Leanne Davies, from Huddersfield Down’s Syndrome Support Group, said: “We provide a huge range of services including extra speech and language sessions, sports workshops, hydrotherapy and social outings as well as
a comprehensive website which signposts familieis, schools and other professionals seeking advice and information.” The group plans to host a family gala evening at Cedar Court Hotel, Huddersfield with musical acts, dancing and food. Leanne said: “It’s a marvellous opportunity to bring everybody together, of all ages under one roof and also wonderful for all our new families with younger children to see first-hand the achievements and abilities of our older members. “We’ll be dressed to impress for this special occasion but will still be wearing our odd socks!” For more information visit www.hdssg. org.uk.

Focus On UNIVERSITY OR APPRENTICESHIP WHICH WILL YOUR CHILD CHOOSE?
I
t’s never too early to think about your child’s career path as Adrian Bird of The Apprentice Finder explains.
Sometimes life throws up happy coincidences. Elaine asking me to write on the subject of apprenticeships is one example. Particularly when you consider that National Apprenticeship Week begins on March 9. Initially I’d enquired about contributing as I believed that part of The Scallymag readership was parents of teenagers facing career choices. It was explained to me that you, the reader are much more likely to be the parent of a younger child. However, here’s where the coincidence comes in. That night my fiveyear-old daughter started telling me about what she wants to be when she grows up. As children are influenced by what’s around them, she currently wants to be a mummy or a princess (thanks Disney!)... What has hit home though, is that it probably isn’t too soon to start explaining what different people do for a living. She knows that mummy cuts dog’s hair and that I help people get work, so it’s a start. I work in an area that is under constant
change but young people leaving schools and colleges will always need to find a way into work afterwards, so this article should help you understand how apprenticeships can play a vital part for your child. The UK has a very well developed university structure but that route is not right for everyone. There are the tuition fees of £9000 per year to think of and that’s before living costs are taken into account. This means that graduates often start their working career with a debt of more than £40,000 that needs to be repaid once they start earning more than
MUM TURNED AUTHOR
A
SINGLE mum who suffered from depression following the birth of her son has turned her life around and landed herself a book deal with a top publisher. Here, Rachel McIntyre shares her story… It sounds melodramatic to say that writing saved my sanity but it’s true. In my twenties and early thirties, I thought I had life sorted. I was living with my Spanish boyfriend in the pictureperfect village of Calvia, in the foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana. As a qualified English teacher, I’d left the dreary classrooms of the UK behind to work in an international school in the Balearics. No more long hours, no more tedious commute, no more workday stress. Instead of taking a stack of marking home, I was heading for the beach then out for dinner every night.

Then, abruptly, things changed. My son was born prematurely with a number of health concerns. My boyfriend decided he wasn’t cut out to be a dad to a sick child and we broke up, leaving me with no money, nowhere to live, and no choice: I returned to the UK and my mum’s spare room. With a tiny baby and without a job, I found myself claiming benefits for the first time in my life. Desperately tired and depressed, I felt a complete failure. During this time, I’d been writing a diary to cope with depression. It helped me to put every day in to perspective if I could put it in to words. I found a job and until last year was a teacher at Huddersfield New College. During this time I began writing more and more and I had an idea for the book that would eventually become “Me and Mr J”. I hadn’t written with a view to publication, it was just a hobby; something to do in the evenings that didn’t cost me any money. But when I’d completed 60,000 words, I thought “Why not? What
£21000. As a result, apprenticeships are becoming a real choice of value again. A friend of mine was telling me about his son’s experience recently. He left school at 18 and went into an engineering apprenticeship. After completing the first year he progressed onto an advanced apprenticeship. As he was completing his qualification, he received a telephone call from a headhunter for the oil industry. He offered my friend’s son a post in Dundee. His starting salary was £24000 per year. He’s 21 and he has no student debt to worry about. Quite a good position to be in at that age, don’t you agree? You might think that apprenticeships are only useful to get into manual trades but this has also changed. It is now possible to enter professions such as law, teaching and accountancy through apprenticeships as well as highly sought after areas such as digital media, IT & software development. Quite often the employer will subsidise the higher education fees when they’re related to the work too. For more information call me on 01484 905135 or email adrian.bird@ theapprenticefinder.com. have I got to lose?” and sent it to a couple of agents. Things went very quickly from there. I was taken on by a brilliant agent, who secured me a publishing deal with Egmont and this year, “Me and Mr J”, which is set in Huddersfield and aimed at children aged 12 and over, is being published in four languages. From being a lonely, penniless single mum, I am now an author. More importantly, my son and I are both healthy and happy and without those difficult years, I would never have achieved what I have today.
