WELCOME

A

WELCOME!

utumn is knocking on the door and thoughts are turning to Halloween and Bonfire Night.

We have a great selection of up-coming events to keep you busy during the colder months, especially October half term. Check out our daily Pre-School and Out of School Diary pages too to keep up with the latest. Once again, Alison Lester of The Rose Garden has come up with a great idea for Crafty Kids - perfect to keep little ones busy on a wet and windy day. We share the latest news from not-for-profit organisation, Uniform Exchange and hear from our charity for the year, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. We go Out and About at Wentworth Castle Gardens, find out what’s happening with our friends fairandfunky and also hear about one mum’s ‘Move to the Country’ and her adventures with her children. I will be sharing a very personal story in this issue - my experience of post-natal depression. I hope you find it interesting if not helpful. The Scallymag will be back at the beginning of December with a Christmas issue. Until then, happy reading!

NEWS Fees DISCOUNTED

H

ipperholme Grammar School has introduced new measures that have cut senior school fees by an average of

10%.

Fees already include lunches, books, stationary and examination costs but the school has made the move to ensure as many families as possible can access the first-rate education it provides. Jack Williams, head teacher, said: “In an improving economic climate we want to give more parents the confidence to invest in their children’s education and long term future. “Our A-level results this summer show our pupils’ academic success, enabling them to leave our school as well qualified, rounded and confident young people.” The school has recently awarded scholarships to four Year 7 students for their academic, musical and sporting abilities. The recipients are George Gillgrass, Olivia Turner, Jonah Carroll and Ella Clark. George received the 100% Fenton Scholarship for his outstanding performance in the school’s entrance examination last October. The scholarship provides a 100% fee remission to the pupil which achieves the highest marks in the exam. It will be offered again to those sitting the exam on Saturday November 22 for entry to the school in September 2015.

UNIFORM EXCHANGE OFFERING A HELPING HAND

ate France, founder of not-for-profit organisation, Uniform Exchange, tells us how it is benefitting hundreds of schoolchildren across Kirklees. Helping reduce social isolation and allowing children to fit in at school is our main aim. We encourage communities to recycle their out-grown school uniform. We then provide good school uniform free to families who find themselves in financial hardship. We do this by encouraging families through primary and secondary schools to recycle and donate their child’s outgrown uniform to the project. We have seen a 75% increase in donations this year, which means more children have benefited! This summer we have given out over

4

250 school uniform packs free of charge this equates to over 2,600 items of school uniform, coats and shoes. The need has grown substantially over the last year and we have now expanded our borders to the whole of Kirklees so everyone can benefit. We have seen requests from child support networks and other organisations working with families. However we still feel we are not reaching our full quota and need to spread the word further and louder. We have also seen all Kirklees libraries become collection and drop off points, Sainsbury’s Dewsbury have promoted us in store and the Sure Start Children’s Centres have continued to support us with their new collection bins. We will be doing our Winter Coat Campaign again this year, so please start donating last year’s outgrown coats and boots to help this worthwhile cause!

OUT & ABOUT

I

t was a cold and cloudy day last autumn when we ventured to Wentworth Castle Gardens.

We had never been before and didn’t know quite what to expect. However, if your kids love the outdoors, exploring old ruins and seeking adventures, then I guarantee they won’t be disappointed. The gardens and parkland are the only Grade I listed landscape in South Yorkshire. Their origins date back to the 1700s and are home to many historical monuments and early gothic follies. It’s unlikely that young children will appreciate the importance of these, but they’ll have fantastic fun investigating each and every one. We spent a lovely afternoon exploring the many formal gardens, some of which resemble the layout of a maze and the little ones were excited by secret pathways and hiding places. The wider parkland of Stainborough is home to fallow deer which are always a treat to see but do be careful if visiting in autumn as this is when the deer rut takes place. Wentworth also boasts a fabulous adventure playground suitable for all ages – there is something for everyone and it was certainly an effort to persuade our three away. However, the promise of a lovely warm lunch at the café managed to sway them. It serves a good selection of seasonal dishes using Yorkshire sourced ingredients. Baby food can be warmed up and breast feeding mums are made to feel welcome. Wentworth hosts activities geared towards families and children throughout the year, so it is definitely worth checking the website prior to visiting. Halloween themed events will be running throughout October half term and there will be traditional Bonfire Night celebrations on November 5. We’ll definitely be paying another visit soon. A super day out. By Elaine Jinks

H

alloween and Bonfire Night are just around the corner and the evenings are drawing in.

Autumn Lanterns Our autumn lantern project, courtesy of Alison Lester of The Rose Garden, is so easy to make, and is great for lighting up those dark nights. They can be used as decorations inside or out, just be careful with the candles, and never leave a lit one unattended!

You will need • Empty jam jar • Paintbrush • Orange tissue paper cut into 1 inch small squares • Black tissue paper • Glue mixture (50% PVA glue and 50% water)

6

Method

1. Make the glue mixture up and start to paint the outside of your glass jar 2. Apply the orange squares of tissue paper one at a time, making sure you paint over the top with more glue to securely seal them in place. 3. Cut out a mouth, eyes and a nose from the black tissue paper, and apply with glue to the jar. 4. Once your jar is fully covered, apply one last coat of glue. 5. Leave to dry, and when ready you can add a tealight or candle to complete your lantern.

Top Tip Orange, red and yellow tissue paper makes a great autumn themed lantern, try adding the odd dried leaf as well. Alternatively you can decorate your jar in whatever design or colour you wish. The Rose Garden is a small business based in Brighouse and specializes in homemade crafts, bunting, jewellery and gifts.

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. We aim to list as many activities for 0-5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is up-to-date (there will probably be some changes every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

FOCUS ON KNITTING MY WAY OUT OF POST NATAL DEPRESSION

P

ost natal depression (PND) is something that happens to other people. That’s what I used to think until one day it happened to me.

It’s such a stealthy condition that I didn’t even realise I was suffering from it and for months refused to accept that I was. But with hindsight, I can see as little as two years ago, I was a very different person from the one I am now. There were times when I couldn’t function, I’d be incapable of the smallest tasks – those were very dark days for me. You see, prior to developing PND after the birth of my daughter, Florence, now four, I had always been a very confident, self-assured, career-minded individual. I hadn’t suffered with PND after the

birth of my first son, Jonathan, in 2003, so there was no reason to suspect that anything was amiss this time around. Florence was very much a wanted child and I only fell pregnant with her after seeking help from the Assisted Conception Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital. However, within three months of giving birth, I became pregnant with my second son, Benjamin, now two. As a result I suffered with severe pelvic girdle pain which restricted my movement. As a partially sighted person, I already found it difficult to get out and about with Florence but the pain endured during Benjamin’s pregnancy made this problem all the more acute. My husband, Gary, and I have no family living nearby so there were no grandparents to lend a hand when things got tough. Post natal depression soon set in and when Benjamin was born it got so bad that I eventually had no option but to seek medical help. The hardest part in all of this was admitting that there was something really

wrong. I blamed myself for it all. It’s only now that I can look back and realise that none of it was my fault – PND can happen to anyone. Apart from a supportive husband, who thankfully has an understanding employer, the other thing that has helped me through one of the most difficult times of my life, is picking up my knitting needles again. Many recent studies have demonstrated that crafts such as knitting or crochet, can help to alleviate the symptoms of stress and depression and this has certainly been the case with me. I’ve found that it has enabled me to focus my mind and concentrate on the many positives in life. It brought back a sense of confidence, a semblance of self-esteem, a feeling of self-worth – things that if you’ve ever suffered with PND, you genuinely believe are lost forever. I’m not the same confident, selfassured, career-minded individual I once was. She is gone for good. But in her place is a better person altogether. Seeking medical help and turning to fibre crafts as a way of therapy gave me the ability to believe in myself again. As a result, I recently set up a new business, Baa Baa Brighouse, an online knitting and Yorkshire yarn store. This has led to knitting groups, workshops, involvement in Brighouse Arts Festival, visits to trade shows and meeting so many new people. It’s certainly not been an easy road to travel but Baa Baa Brighouse has allowed me to stand tall again and feel proud of what I’ve achieved – as a mother and as a business woman. I fought PND and I won. You can too. By Elaine Jinks

HUBBLE, BUBBLE, TOIL AND TROUBLE!

oin the witches, wizards, ghosts and ghouls of Eureka – the Museum for Children for a week of Halloween fun.

Baa Baa Brighouse has teamed up with a number of Yorkshire based indie dyers to bring you the Yan Tan Tethera Yarn Club.

From October 25 to November 2 the museum at Discovery Road, Halifax, is inviting visitors to step into the Enchanted Forest and join the witches as they brew up a potion and conjure up an interactive story. Guests can transfigure themselves by creating a Halloween mask and dressing

As a member, each month you will receive an exclusive skein of quality Yorkshire yarn that has been sourced, spun and dyed locally by hand. Our dyers will be taking their inspiration from photographs of the Yorkshire landscape by Gary Turner of Shutterspot Photography. Each dyer will use a different photograph guaranteeing that every monthly batch of yarn is beautiful and completely unique from the next.

The dyer will decide on the yarn most suited to the project but will aim to uphold our ethos of using only British breeds and Yorkshire yarns. November’s Yan Tan Tethera Yarn Club dyer is Louise Lavender of The Cryptozoologist – Fantastical HandDyed Yarns. If you would like to join the Yan Tan Tethera Yarn Club or would like further information about the club, the dyers or anything else, please visit our website: www.baabaabrighouse.co.uk.

Huddersfield village is planning to celebrate the humble apple this autumn.

On Saturday October 18, Lindley will celebrate with a dedicated festival that will include demonstrations and apple themed events for the whole family. A live apple-pressing is promised, there will be tree planting, grafting and pruning demonstrations, an apple-pie competition and apple bobbing. Lindley businesses will also be offering apple flavoured twists on their usual products. A full programme of events is still to be finalised, however apple pressings will start every hour on the hour. The Apple Day concept was started by Common Ground in 1990 and the first Apple Day was in Covent Garden, London, on the 21st October that year. Last year Lindley celebrated its first apple day with people coming from far and wide. The organisers Marie-Claire Micuta

and David Kendall-Smith hope to build upon the success of the previous year’s event, promoting the apple and demonstrating the myriad possibilities of the fruit, as well as encouraging visitors to Lindley to see what it has to offer. They said: “It was great to see so many businesses get behind last year’s apple day, and so many people enjoying what was going on. The fresh juice was very well received.”

Lindley Apple Day is free, however businesses may have their own paid-for apple themed events running. For more information or to make suggestions follow @lindleyappleday on Twitter or visit the Facebook page - www. facebook.com/lindleyappleday.

JOIN THE FAMILY ROUNDABOUT…

ocal mum, Anna Gomersall tells us about her escape to the country.

Three years ago I moved from London with my family and came to live in a village near Huddersfield. After the bustle of the city, it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. What an adventure! As mum to a 10 month old baby, I found it a challenge: how could I fill the days with my little boy when I didn’t know where to go or who to ask? I spent ages Googling ideas but was surprised at how little help there was online. Three years on, I’ve made lots of new friends and noticed that we often swap notes on places we’ve been with the kids. You can’t beat another mum’s (or dad’s) recommendation because they’ve actually been there, eaten in the café with a screaming toddler, tackled the steps with an enormous buggy and know if the entry price is worth paying. So last September, I started Family Roundabout. It’s a website full of stories

Let your local school and community groups know about the new “Farm to Fork Workshop” focussing on Malawi, the farmers, the culture, and the journey of rice from the farms to our forks in the UK. Lasting 60 minutes participants will be engaged through interactive workshops, role-play, activities, video presentations and a quiz. The workshop costs £150 and includes a bag of rice! The rice challenge runs throughout the Autumn term. Fairandfunky hope many of you will help them complete the challenge three times over to change the world for farming communities in Malawi.

and reviews of the places that my boys, Aaron, three and Eli, two and I discover together.

Over the year, we’ve visited and reviewed 100 family-friendly attractions stretching from Bolton to Wakefield but mostly around Huddersfield. I particularly love the less well known places – hidden gems which are often fun, friendly and fantastic value for money. And you’ll be surprised how many of those there are, just waiting to be discovered. It’s been a really busy year getting Family Roundabout up and running.

The main challenges have been finding enough venues to visit and then actually visiting them all. The best thing has been 100 brilliant days out with my boys! My main aim was to help other families in the same boat as I was. So I’ve really enjoyed writing the reviews, seeing more and more people visit the site and then getting messages from parents who’ve had a great day out with their own families. It makes all the effort worthwhile. I hope you’ll visit Family Roundabout at www.familyroundabout.co.uk. You can follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Google +. Just visit the website and click on the links. I’m also looking for Guest Reviews; if you’d like to tell everyone about your family’s favourite day out, I’d love to hear from you. For more information, visit the website and click ‘Write a Review’. By Anna Gomersall www.familyroundabout.co.uk

A Children’s autumn Reads

s the nights are starting to draw in and the children are back at school it’s nice at bedtime to be able to dip into a book that has a collection of stories. Here is a selection that is ideal for a little quiet time at the end of a busy day.

Collections 365 Illustrated Stories and Rhymes Usborne (£14.99) A wonderful collection of new and traditional tales and rhymes. A Classic Story for Everyday Hutchinson (£19.99) A great collection of some old favourites to return to time and again. A Year of Stories and Things to Do by Shirley Hughes (£19.99) This is a collection that will take you all the way through the year. It includes entertaining activities for both inside and out.

The Loch Mess Monster by Helen Lester (£6.99) This is about one little monster who loves to stash things. Despite his parents’ best efforts, his mountain of mess grows and grows until at the top of his mountain he spies monstrous land monsters. Suddenly Angus wants to clear up! A lovely read with great pictures.
