The writing on the wall

At a banquet in the castle in Babylon, a hand suddenly began writing strange symbols on the wall. The king became pale with fright – what could it mean? Daniel was called in – the king promised him everything he wanted if he could interpret the writing. Daniel looked sadly at the king and said that the writing meant that the king had been weighed in God’s balance and found wanting, for the king drank wine from holy vessels from Jerusalem and worshipped false gods. That night the king was killed. Book of Daniel 5:1-30

In the service of King Nebuchadnezzar

When King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were taken prisoner and brought to Babylon. There they had to live, eat and study the Babylonian customs at the King’s palace. The food was rich, but of the kind God had forbidden the Jews to eat. Therefore they asked the chief official if they might instead eat fruit and vegetables and drink water. At first the chief official was sceptical, but after a trial period he gave them permission, because they appeared healthier and happier than before. Book of Daniel 1:1-16

Daniel interprets the king’s dream

One day the king became very angry. He had been disturbed by a terrible dream and since none of the wise men of the court could tell him the meaning of the dream, he condemned them all to death. Daniel and his friends met and prayed, and in a vision God told Daniel what the dream meant. The next day, Daniel stood before the king and said: “You, O King, saw a great statue broken to pieces by a stone, after which the stone became a mountain that covered the whole of the earth. The statue that you saw is like the kingdoms on earth – they come and go, but the Heavenly stone is an image of a Kingdom which God shall create and which shall never be destroyed.” When the king heard these words, he threw himself to the ground and exclaimed: “Your God is truly a God of gods.” Book of Daniel 2:1-49

The fiery furnace

King Nebuchadnezzar had a huge gold statue made and ordered all people to fall to their knees and worship the statue. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Daniel’s three friends remained standing; they would only worship God in Heaven – regardless of the consequences. The king was furious and ordered the furnace heated to 7 times hotter than was normal. Finally, it was so frizzling hot that the soldiers perished when they threw Daniel’s three friends into the furnace. The king was astonished to see four men inside the furnace – walking in the flames as though nothing was wrong; and the appearance of the fourth was like a son of the gods. The king had them removed from the furnace and decreed that never again might anyone speak against the God of Daniel’s three friends. The Book of Daniel 3: 1-30

The den of lions

Daniel’s enemies tricked the king into arresting Daniel. They said, “Daniel pays no heed to your command to only worship you O King! He must be punished for worshipping the Jewish God.” The king was saddened. Daniel was his friend, but his command could not be changed. Daniel was thrown into a lions’ den, but God sent an angel and shut the lions’ mouths. The next morning, the king found Daniel unharmed, without a scratch – and he praised Daniel’s God for saving Daniel from the lions. The Book of Daniel 6: 1-25
