In 2017, the Government of Canada, Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada (NCE) provided $1.6 million over four years (2017-2021) to create SCAN Health. Hosted by the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business, SCAN Health is an International Knowledge Translation Platform funded to accelerate knowledge translation and address key problems, challenges and opportunities of high strategic importance for health systems in Canada and around the globe. Spanning five countries, including Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada – and with over one hundred partners from industry, healthcare, government and academia – the Network will enable the exchange of information and expertise to accelerate the implementation of healthcare supply chain best practices around the world. By mobilizing supply chain best practices to track health products and processes to patient outcomes we can significantly reduce medical error, increase health system sustainability and drive economic growth for companies globally.

JOINT MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND THE SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR & CEO Healthcare is one of the largest and most complex business sectors in the world. Expert analyses continually point to the need to do better in delivering health to global populations and improving patient safety. Adverse events are devastating for patients and their families – and they are very costly to the organization and the healthcare system. Many other industries have improved safety and efficiency by implementing supply chain best practices that track and trace products and processes from manufacturer to the end-user. The lack of strategic supply chain management in the world’s healthcare systems makes it difficult to meet growing patient demands for safe care while improving efficiency, managing costs and achieving value for patients. Dr. Allan Conway | Board President, Supply Chain Advancement Network in Health (SCAN Health)

THANK YOU Thank You to Our Host: Healthcare Transformation Group (HTG) In 2010, five healthcare systems — Geisinger Health System, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic and Mercy — formed an action-oriented collaboration called the Healthcare Transformation Group (HTG) to share best practices and drive needed positive change across the healthcare supply chain. The first initiative being addressed by the HTG is the implementation of GS1® Standards. This includes Global Location Numbers (GLNs), the 13-digit number used to identify any legal entity/trading partner, and Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), the GS1 System Identification Number that uniquely identifies trade items at all levels of packaging. HTG members share this common foundation: • Accelerate change across the supply chain • Enhance patient safety • Improve supply chain efficiencies • Drive the adoption of GS1 Standards with suppliers • Communicate in the marketplace through one voice HTG has established working relationships with GS1 Healthcare US, academic institutions, governmental agencies, vendors/suppliers and research institutions — to continue to advocate for and advance the adoption of data standards in healthcare.
