Fatima Mensen-Potter designed this piece and wrote the tutorial in June/14. In the following month, this Lariat won the Preciosa Traditional Czech Beads award, and, in 2015, was published in B&B Extra (USA) and Beading Polska (Poland) magazines.

Time to try my modified herringbone stitch. I bet you will like it.

a. Rings – We make 4 rings with 8 Lentils 2-hole, Delicas and 16 Drops, each. I am going to name the two holes of Lentils as L1 / L2

1. Pick up two Delicas, one L1, two Delicas and pass back through L2 of the same Lentil. Pass through the two Delicas again, forming a loop. Tie a knot and pass through L1, two Delicas. 2. Pick up one L2, two Delicas, and pass through the L1 of the same Lentil, two Delicas, and L2. 3. Repeat step 2, 5 times – Then you have 7 Lentils. 4. Closing the ring - pick up one L2, pass through the two Delicas of the other end, L1 of the first Lentil, two Delicas, L2 of the last Lentil beaded, two Delicas, L1. 5. Pick up a Drop, pass through the next L1. 6. Repeat step 5, 7 times, and pass through 2 Delicas and 1 L2. 6. Pick up a drop between L2s all the way around. Secure and end the threads. Put aside, and make 3 more rings. YoucandoitYoucandoitYoucandoit Youcandoit

Please, use thread K.O. or similar to make tassels with Delicas.

b. Tassels (2)– let’s first make a tube in peyote stitch working with Delica beads. 1. Pick up 8 Delicas. These beads will become the first two rows. 2. To begin row 3, pick up a bead, and go through the second bead from the end. Pick up a bead, and go through the fourth bead from the end. Continue across the row. 3. Make 5 more rows. You will get a square 8 rows by 8 beads, and zip up. 4. Weave the bread to reinforce, and go down through the edge bead.

5. Making the loops: Pickup 9 Delica beads, 10 seed beads, 1 4mm bead, 10 seed beads, 9 Delicas, and go back through the bead you just came from. Pass up through next bead and down through the next bead to make the second loop. 6. Repeat step 5, 4 times you will get one loop on each bead of the first row. (5 loops total) 7. Go up through 2 beads and down 1 bead. Now we will make another 5 loops, one on each bead of the third row. 12. Go up through 2 beads and down 1 bead to make another 5 loops, one on each bead of the fifth row. Count again: 3 rows x 5 loops each = 15. Secure and end all threads. Put aside, and make one more tassel.

(9 Delicas, 10 seed beads, 1 4mm Fire Polished, 10 seed beads, 9 Delicas)

One loop on every red dotted bead. YoucandoitYoucandoitYoucandoit Youcandoit

c. Rope – Here we will be working on Herringbone stitch placing a seed bead in between, using 4mm Fire Polished beads, and 11/0 seed beads.

1. In a comfortable length of thread, attach a stop bead, leaving a 10-inch. (25cm) tail. 2. Pick up a 4mm bead, a seed bead, a 4mm bead and go through the two 4mm bead. Pull the top down so the beads are side by side with a seed bead in between. 3. Pick up a 4mm bead, a seed bead, a 4mm bead, and go down through the next bead, and pick up a seed bead and go up through the next two beads. 4. Correct the seed bead position. It needs to be placed right in the middle. You will have a seed bead in the middle of the 4mm bead on the front and the back. 5. Repeat step 3 as many times as needed to have your desired length, then go down through one 4mm bead, pick up a seed bead and go up though the next bead and get ready to embellish your lariat. 3/4 TM

d. Almost there. We have 1 rope, 2 tassels, 4 rings, and 2 focal beads. Let’s put them together to finish your Vibrant Lariat.

Working with the thread on the end of the rope, pass through one ring, one gold bicone, one ring, pass through the tube of one tassel, pick up one 4mm bead, one Delica, go back through the 4mm bead, tube, ring, gold bicone, ring, three 4mm beads, through the seed bead, go down through the next three 4mm beads, ring, gold bicone, ring, tassel, 4mm bead and tie. Secure and end the thread. Repeat this procedure in the other end and we are done. You just made your version of Vibrant Lariat, the Preciosa Czech Award Winner July 2014.
