MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Isn’t this moment...? ...This current moment we share together, is right out of a movie scene? It feels like it’s off the pages of a script and into the screens of our minds. We observe as life happens around us, just like watching a film, minus the options to pause, rewind, stop or fast forward. We act as the lead actors of our lives, playing the one and only role that we are meant to play: one that will inevitably lead us to wherever we need to be. Yet, just like watching a film, despite not knowing what’s coming next, we go through the journey knowing that by the end of it all, everything will fall into place. All the words, acts, characters, plots, highs and lows—everything works out, and everything is just fine. Anything is possible and obtainable. Signs and events continue to prove this time and time again; it is just a universal truth. As we gather to celebrate great cinema, it cannot go without saying that the 5th Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival, and the last 4 years, would not be possible without those who played a vital part in bringing this festival to life: our audience, volunteers, sponsors and partners, friends and family, staff and board, supporters and sponsors, and of course, the filmmakers. Thank you for helping Scarborough become a place where diverse peoples and communities can come together! Just like watching a film, let’s sit back, relax, and observe the transformative power of art and the moving image, as it uplifts, inspires, and celebrates our human spirit. Whatever our film choice is: a thriller, an action film, drama, or comedy, we learn and discover something new out of it. If it’s scary, we yell; if it’s a drama, we cry; if it’s a comedy, we laugh. Shane Smith is Director of Programming at Hot Docs, North America’s largest Festival and Market for documentary film. Smith previously worked at the Toronto International Film Festival as the Director of Special Projects, overseeing numerous initiatives and exhibitions. Other positions include Executive Producer, In-Flight Entertainment at Spafax; Director of Programming at Channel Zero; Director of the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival; Short Film Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival; and Programmer for Inside Out LGBT Film Festival. He is the Founder and Co-Director of OzFlix: Australian Film Weekend in Toronto.

Joyce Wong is a writer and director based in Toronto. Her films often feature an idiosyncratic tone and tongue-incheek comedy. She graduated from York University with a BFA in Film Production in 2007, and is an alumna of the 2008 Berlinale Talent Campus and the 2016 TIFF Talent Lab. Her work has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Most recently, she completed her first feature, WEXFORD PLAZA, which premiered at the 2016 Torino Film Festival, screened in competition at Slamdance, and won the Center for Asian American Media’s Best Narrative Feature.

He is not the guy from Vice.

Born near the cradling waves of Goa, India and raised in the diverse suburbs of Scarborough, ON, Sampreeth Rao is a filmmaker of eclectIc origins. His documentary debut, Watching TV with the Mind Off (2016), played at the TIFFxInstagram Festival, Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival, and Regent Park Film Festival, where he was awarded the RBC Emerging Director’s Award. Recently, he also co-founded the Wave Art Collective, a digital media program aimed at reducing youth unemployment in Scarborough. Ultimately, Sampreeth believes in taking risks, interdisciplinarity, and above all else, a good bowl of ramen. Sampreeth is also a graduate of Scarborough Arts’ EAST Aninmating Democracy Program.

The Constitution is a chronicle of four very different people, who live in the same building and who, against their will, become dependent on each other. A professor, his disabled father, a dyslexic police officer, and his wife, each with their own frustrations and fears are pulled together by non-trivial circumstances. Directed by Rajko Grlić and written by Ante Tomić, the film is is a reminder of some often-forgotten values of human freedoms. Meet Hratch Armenious, luthier. For over 45 years, Armenious has been making violins of exquisite quality. With simple tools and 400-year-old techniques, he turns rough pieces of wood into beautiful and elegant musical instruments. Situated in the Wexford Heights Plaza on Lawrence Avenue East in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, the restaurant continues to play a vital role within the local community. This charming short documentary profiles the restaurant, its staff and customers.

It’s the 1980s, and Jay is thirteen years old. She’s managed to get her hands on a Playgirl magazine. She’s absolutely positive that it holds the key to unlocking womanhood for herself and her friends—if only they can muster the courage to open it. Alicia Harris’ hilarious coming of age short film is an all-too-relatable story about the awkward precipice of puberty.

JUNE 9 | 7 PM | FOX THEATRE | $10 In the summer of 2013, clashes erupted across Cairo between the military and the Muslim Brotherhood supporters. This utterly harrowing film explores the conflict, as well as a cross-section of Egyptian society, from within the confines of a single police van. The impressive cinematography captures both the grueling claustrophobia of being detained inside a cramped space and also the vast, free-flowing chaos of coursing crowds in open streetsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sometimes all within a single shot.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: MOHAMED DIAB Mohamed Diab is an award-winning writer and director, whose work often deals with pressing issues concerning Egyptian society. He is known for his directorial debut film, Cairo 678, a drama about three women who unite to fight against male chauvinism in Cairo. CLASH, his second feature film, was selected as the Opening film of Un Certain Regard in Cannes Film Festival 2016.

THE BLIND CHRIST JUNE 10 | 4 PM | FOX THEATRE | $10 Upon learning of a friend’s injury, Michael embarks on a pilgrimage across the desert to reach him, with the belief that he will perform a miracle of healing. Part road movie and part spiritual fable, Christopher Murray’s enigmatic film employs a cast of mostly local non-professional actors, and moments often feel as if they could be documentary. The film’s cinematography is sure-handed and subtly composed, yet it maintains its natural, meandering sense of authenticity. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: CHRISTOPHER MURRAY Christopher Murray holds a degree in Audiovisual Direction from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica of Chile. His film Manuel de Ribera was awarded the Best Domestic Film award at SANFIC 2010. He is a co-founder of the documentary project Film Map of a Country (www.mafi.tv). Murray was also General Director of the award winning collective film Propaganda.

BITTER MONEY JUNE 11 | 1 PM | FOX THEATRE | $10 Renowned documentarian Wang Bing’s latest film brings us into the daily lives of garment industry labourers in an eastern Chinese city. The majority of these workers are migrants, having travelled from far off villages in search of a steady job. But the employment they’ve found is piecemeal and precarious at best. With nimble camerawork and a patient approach, Wang’s observational documentary grants us a unique view of the lives for these workers. Though slow-burning, Bitter Money builds an effective and engaging portrait of life for these workers.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: WANG BING Wang Bing is one of the leading documentarians currently working in China. He graduated from the Film Academy in Beijing. He is famous for his charactaristically long, and sometimes multi-part, observational documentaries about labourers and working class people of China and nearby regions. His films have won numerous awards and premiered at renowned film festivals in Venice and Berlin.

With hauntingly beautiful cinematography, filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze explores the melancholy and unease of a family seeking stability in the wake of wartime. In the early 1990’s, the breakaway region of Abkhazia declared its independence from Georgia. Families across the region were uprooted and relocated to homes only recently vacated by families from the enemy’s side. Homes with lingering memories. Even in the absence of war, peace remains elusive. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: RUSUDAN GLURJIDZE After studying film directing and screenwriting at Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University, Rusudan Glurjidze worked in public television broadcasting for several years. House of Others, her first feature film, won the Grand Prix in the East of the West Copmetition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was Georgia’s official candidate for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
