Martin answered a Colleague Facebook ad, and is now on national TV. Martin says: “I sent in a video explaining how I inspire my team to be creative and enjoy their job, and it went from there. Filming the advert was a really great experience and my family can’t wait to see me on TV.” Martin isn’t the only one looking good. His colleagues in our Newquay store have received their new uniforms (p12 & 13). Customer Assistant Marcia Menhenett says: “I love the polo shirts, they’re so comfortable and easy to look after and the jackets are a much better fit. We’ve had customers telling us how smart we all look.” In the run-up to Christmas, colleagues will be swapping their shirts for Christmas jumpers and Nutmeg has a great value range for everyone (p7).

The latest news from right around our business.
On Monday 7th November, we’re launching our Christmas TV adverts showing how Morrisons Makes it for our customers at Christmas. hristmas is our busiest trading period of the year, and a great opportunity to encourage more customers into our stores. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we let people know about our good quality, seasonal food that’s great value for money and, of course, our great customer service. “Christmas is a very special time for our customers. It’s all about tradition, joy and gatherings with family and friends. As food makers and shopkeepers, we’re well placed to help our customers make it a wonderful occasion,” says Andy Atkinson, Group Marketing & Customer Director. Our festive point of sale, which features The Best Red Christmas Wreath at £15, will make it easy for our customers to find our Christmas products in store. We’ll also be promoting our seasonal offers on social media, in the press and through our Christmas TV adverts, which launch on 7th November.

A toast to our
award-winners We spoke to two colleagues who you’ll see in our Christmas ads. I had the time of my life filming the adverts and seeing behind the scenes. So much time and effort goes into getting the advert just right to show off our great food and service. I know our regular customers will love it and it’ll put Redcar on the map!” Fay Dunn-Housbey, customer assistant – meat, Redcar
It was an amazing experience from start to finish. Instead of a script, we were asked to greet the customers just as we would in store, so the adverts genuinely show the great service our customers experience when they visit our Bakery counter.” Martin Sobye, Bakery & Cake Shop Manager, Newquay
Industry awards show that we’re getting things right for our customers, and that our award-winning products are the best our customers can buy. And that’s something we can all be proud of.
t the International Wine Challenge our wines won over 100 awards and we were crowned Supermarket of the Year for the second year running, thanks to our dedicated and skilled colleagues. Now we’re telling our customers just how good we are with a new TV advert showing why Morrisons is the place to go for superb wines at great value prices this Christmas. “We want customers to think again about our wine offer. We want them to be confident that they can count on us for great wines for special occasions like Christmas,” says Mark Jarman, Senior Trading Manager – Wine Sourcing. It’s not just wine that we’re winning awards for. Thanks to our café colleagues’ hard work, we won the 2016 National Café Chain of the Year award at the Café Quality Food Awards.

“Customers are really starting to notice the awards and talk to us about them.” ScoT Robinson, Cleethorpes
The award is judged on everything from Fairtrade and ethical policies to customer service and product range. Our Beers, Wines and Spirits Team were also recognised for their great work at the Retail Industry Awards, where we were named Drinks Retailer of the Year. “Over the past year we’ve listened to our customers and responded quickly with some big changes, including craft beers and local ales that are selling well. We’re also introducing new spirits, like American whiskeys that are becoming popular. This award shows we’re heading in the right direction,” says Dan Povey, Interim Category Director – Beers, Wines and Spirits.
Steak-ing our reputation arlier this year we won Meat and Fish Retailer of the Year. We’ve followed this up with Gold for our British Breed Shorthorn Cross at the World Steak Challenge. This is the breed that produces The Best British 21-Day-Matured Dry-Aged Shorthorn Sirloin Steak, which is now on sale in 115 of our stores. Let our customers know about our award-winning products this Christmas, and look out for our wine adverts, which are on TV from 1st November.

They can also be confident that their Christmas centrepieces will arrive looking as good as they do on our site. “We’ve worked hard with the Trading Team to make sure we get the packaging just right for online. There’s lots of help available so you can find the role you want or do your current role even better, like Career Conversations or our new recruitment website, Morrisons.jobs e’ve created a new website, “W Morrisons.jobs, for anyone wanting to start a career with us or colleagues who are unsure about how to take their next step, whether that’s a promotion or developing in their current role,” says Vicki Haworth, People Manager – Resourcing. “It’s full of stories and useful information about what it’s like to work in Logistics, Manufacturing, Hilmore, stores, or on the road.
“The launch of the new site will show colleagues how they can have a fulfilling career with us.” Lyndsay Holland, People Manager – Early Careers

“On the website, colleagues talk about how they’ve developed their careers and the tools and support they’ve received along the way. Our people make Morrisons. There are lots of ways to have a great career here, so we’ve designed the site to give you a clear idea of where you can take your career, and how to go about it,” says Vicki.
Just visit Morrisons.jobs The website is going live this month. If you see a job on there that you’re interested in, talk to your Line Manager and they’ll help you with the next steps. “There’s also an Early Careers section, where you can apply for a place on our Graduate Scheme, which is open to degreeholders across Retail, Manufacturing, Logistics, Corporate, Trading, Finance, and Technology.
recruitment
Progression doesn’t have to be
promotion Careers are personal, and many of our colleagues are happy to remain in their current role, like Sarah Dawson, Meat and Fish Manager at our Welwyn Garden City store.
“The launch of the new site will show colleagues how they can have a fulfilling career with us,” says Lyndsay Holland, People Manager – Early Careers. “There are dozens of positions for graduates across the business. It’s a great chance to tap into the talent we already have, and make sure we keep delivering excellent customer service well into the future. “Lots of colleagues join us straight from school, but don’t always see us as a long-term option because they don’t know how much they can achieve here. We’re keen to keep hold of that talent, and help them develop their skills. “From January, we’ll also be taking applications for Sponsored Degree Apprenticeships, where we sponsor school leavers through university. By enrolling on the programme, colleagues who’ve just left school will be able to work with us while studying for a degree in Business Management from Bradford University. “And next year we’re planning to roll out over one thousand apprenticeships to make sure we’re keeping this young talent pool topped up. Look out for more information.”
Caught on camera Take a look behind the scenes at the stars of our recruitment website as they prepared for the photoshoot:
Since joining the store in 1993, Sarah has held many roles, including in the bakery, café and the petrol station. Now she’s finally found her calling. “It’s great that we’ve got the freedom to arrange the displays as we want, and bring in different lines. I’m very proud of how the fish counter looks – and it was lovely to show that to David when he visited our store recently,” she says. “As a keen cook, I love sharing recipes with customers. I ask them which dishes they like to make, and make sure what we stock reflects that. That’s something I’m always looking to perfect as I try to get better at what I do.”
Everything in its right place Sarah is a pillar of the community in Pansanger, where her store is based. “As a member of the Christian church here, I’m involved in youth work and I’m on the Leadership team of the church. I’m also a member of the Chaplaincy team at Luton Airport. So with these out-of-work commitments I’m thankful to have a job with a good work-life balance,” she adds. “It’s great that other colleagues want to move up through the ranks and try new things, but I know I’m in exactly the right place.” november2016

new uniforms
for
customers
By the end of the month, all our stores will be looking good in their new uniforms.
Smart and professional We’re making our stores even better places for our customers to shop in lots of different ways. The excessive clutter has gone, we’re opening up our Market Street counters, and our pricing and point of sale messages are clear and simple to understand, all of which makes Morrisons a better place to work and shop. Specialist cleaning companies are keeping our stores looking great, and now our colleagues are looking their best too. By the end of November, all store colleagues will be wearing their new uniform. “It’s part of our plan to make a great first impression and serve our customers better, which also includes new customer service desks and, in larger stores, Greeters who welcome our customers at busy times. That’s why it was so important to get the uniform just right, and why it’s taken longer than we’d hoped to get them into stores,” says Rebekah Wilson, Support Office Advisor.
It’s comfortable, warm and, apart from a few teething problems with sizing, everyone really likes it. Customers seem impressed too and say it’s easier to find a manager thanks to the different coloured shirts.” Michael Kennedy, Grocery Manager, Barrack Street, Glasgow 12

The new uniform not only looks great but our colleagues tell us it’s more comfortable, easier to clean and makes them feel more professional. “All these improvements have come from listening and responding to what our customers and colleagues tell us. Thank you to everyone who’s trialled the new uniform over the past few months and told us what they liked and how we could make the uniform even better,” adds Rebekah.
The new uniform fits really well and I like the jacket with zipped pockets. We’ve had lots of customers saying how smart we all look. And when you look smart, you feel better.” Suzanne Grant, Admin and Cash Office Manager, Selby
Everyone is loving the new uniform, it’s so practical. It’s comfier, warmer and much easier to work in. I’ve had customers telling me how smart we all look.” Olivia Coffey, Checkout Team Leader, Brighton
It’s much more comfortable to work in than the old uniforms. We were part of the trial and I’m pleased to see that the team listened to us and added pockets into the jacket.” Jonathan Smith, Customer Assistant, Selby
Putting it to good use We’re donating our old uniform to The Salvation Army. When you start wearing your new uniform, please bring your old shirts, blouses and jackets into store so we can recycle them for a good cause.

ogether, we’re on course to raise more than £7 million for Sue Ryder in just three years. And we haven’t finished yet. We’re also thinking about the future, and we want you to choose a new charity for us to partner with.
T
the search so far
In June almost 100 organisations applied to become our next charity partner. We narrowed this down to 10 charities by asking important questions, like: Do you work throughout the UK?
Do you benefit and support people who live near our stores and sites? Do you have great ideas for working and supporting all our stores and sites? Do you have specific projects we can fund? Our Community Champions took part in a telephone meeting to find out more about some of the best charities that applied and help shortlist six. These six charities visited Hilmore to present to a panel of colleagues from across the business, who chose our two finalists – Age UK and CLIC Sargent.
age uk...
