A
rainbow of colors fills the sky each spring during Freedom Weekend Aloft, a hot air balloon festival in Simpsonville. It’s a unique event that attracts more than 100 hot air balloons, and it’s one of the largest such events in the Southeast. For those who are not content to watch from the ground, hot air balloon rides are available. Flights are taken in the evening, when the winds are calm, and rides are typically at tree-level or no higher than 3,000 feet. The ride usually lasts about an hour — long enough to get a bird’s-eye view of Greenville County’s countryside at sunset. Tethered rides also are available. “It’s our version of Disney,” one festival enthusiast said. In addition to the balloons, the festivities include a variety of concerts, a family fun zone, a Frisbee contest for dogs, amusement rides, games and, of course, lots of food. Congaree National Park
S
outh Carolina is full of interesting wildlife, and one of the best places to experience it is at Congaree National Park just southeast of Columbia. One of the park’s programs is the weekly Owl Prowl. Now offered every Friday night year-round, the prowl is a 2½-mile walk through the forest giving visitors the chance to see flying squirrels, bats and fireflies. The highlight of the excursion is catching a glimpse of a barred owl, the park’s most common owl species. Also known as the “hoot owl,” the barred owl is the only typical owl in the eastern United States with brown eyes instead of yellow. The owl’s trademark hoot sounds like it’s saying, “Who cooks for you — Who cooks for you all?” Reservations are required for the prowl, and the walk begins at dusk. It is free of charge. All you need to bring is a flashlight with a red filter, which can be purchased at a craft or photography
store, and comfortable walking shoes. Children must be at least 6 years old to participate. This unique night tour experience is one of the park’s many “Walks and Talks” programs. Others include the annual spring walks and the Harry Hampton Memorial Walk. The spring walks, held on May 17 and June 7 this year, are 2½-hour walks through the tall trees of the park. Walks are led by naturalist Rudy Mancke, whom you might have seen on NatureScene on S.C. ETV. Reservations are required for the program. The Harry Hampton Memorial Walk is a three-hour guided walk offered in the fall. It is held in honor of the man who led the grass-roots effort to preserve the Congaree floodplain, which resulted in the establishment of the park in 1976. The Congaree is South Carolina’s only national park. In addition to the walks, rangers provide free guided canoe programs along

here is no better place to get a taste of South Carolina’s rich history than at Boykin Mill, one of the state’s Civil War battle sites. Located about nine miles from Camden, Boykin Mill is the site of the last Civil War battle fought in the state. In the historic Battle of Boykin’s Mill, also called Potter’s Raid, Confederate troops were outnumbered by 2,500 Federal troops, which included the famous 54th Massachusetts Regiment, one of the first official black units in the U.S. armed forces. The Confederates were defeated and Federal troops suffered massive casualties, including the last Federal officer to die in the war. A commemorative marker is located near the town of Rembert, at the intersection of Boykin Road (S.C. Highway 261) and Boykin Mill Road. While visiting Boykin Mill, you can visit the Boykin Mill Pond community, which consists of some 400 flooded acres and the original mill built in 1792. Visitors can see the mill grind meal and grits by waterpower as it has done for more than 150 years. You can also watch brooms being made by hand using 100-year-old equipment.

nce one of the most beautiful churches in the area and one of the first Greek Revival structures built in the United States, the ruins of Sheldon Church are a scenic site that gives visitors a glimpse into the splendor of the pre-Revolutionary era in South Carolina. The church, founded by William Bull, was completed in 1755 but was burned in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. It was later rebuilt from the remaining walls in 1826. However, in 1865, the church was burned again in the Civil War, by Gen.
William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops during their “March to the Sea.” The walls remained but the church was never rebuilt. The simplicity of the design still remains even though it has been in ruins for more than 140 years. The site is picturesque and offers visitors a taste of South Carolina’s history.
