Carowinds offers a full day and night’s worth of rides, water activities and entertainment. Tega Cay celebrates its birthday on July 4. The annual tradition includes a pancake breakfast, parades on land and water, golf, activities in the park and fireworks. McDowell Park has campgrounds, fishing piers, hiking trails and picnic pavilions in a beautiful wooded park on the lake just minutes from the city. Try out the rapids at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Knights Castle is the home of the Charlotte Knights baseball team. Check their website for a calendar of events. New this summer is Trader Marc’s Indoor Flea Market extravaganza located across from Baxter Village in the former UAV facility. It includes a farmers market and floral market featuring local vendors. Long Cove is a perfect location for a company picnic or family reunion or just a great day on the lake. Ebenezer Park, located on the south end of the lake off Museum Road in Rock Hill, has a beach for swimming, picnic and camping areas. Take a country drive to the Peach Tree in Filbert and stop along the way at one of the roadside farm stands for fresh peaches, berries and other produce. Take a detour into to Belmont with its small town charm and beauty. Enjoy the Stowe Park and Farmers Market held on Saturdays. The biggest day of the year at Lake Wylie is July 4. After a full day on the water, everyone gathers near T-Bones on the Lake and the Buster Boyd Bridge public boat landing to view the Annual Fireworks Display, which begins at about 9:45 p.m. The Lake Wylie Community Fireworks are funded solely by donations and about $20,000 is needed each year to continue the tradition. If you’d like to donate “Cash for the Flash,” send your annual contribution to: Lake Wylie - Camp Thunderbird Fireworks Fund, One Thunderbird Lane, Lake Wylie, SC 29710. We hope this gives you a few ideas for summer activities that are close to home and great to enjoy with your family and friends. LW

L
iving on Lake Wylie doesn’t mean you need to have a boat to have a good time. From sailing regattas and ski shows to lakeside parties and boat charters, Lake Wylie offers plenty of fun social opportunities for folks who don’t actually own a boat themselves.
River Hills Yacht Club Started in 1973, the River Hills Yacht Club has more than 200 members but only 30% of them own a boat. “It’s a big misconception that you have to own a boat or that you have to live in River Hills to be a member,” said commodore Allen Nason. “Our members range in age from 27 to 97, and
at least 20 percent live outside of River Hills. We just pair people who own boats with those who don’t so everybody gets to know one another.” A boating-themed social organization, the River Hills Yacht Club plans about eight events mainly during boating season. This year, they’ve already held their annual Casino Night in February, a Blessing of the Fleet and Crappie King & Queen crowning in late April and a Memorial Day Poker Run. In July, the club plans a Yankee Clipper event where passengers visit “ports” adorned as Charleston, Dubai, Shanghai and Boston. For Labor Day, club members and guests celebrate with Dueling Pianos on the Lake, an

evening with pianists from Howl at the Moon at the Epicentre in uptown Charlotte. The two pianos are set up on the lawn of a home on the peninsula in Crowders Creek. “Everyone boats over or drives over, and we enjoy catered food and three hours of dueling pianos on the lawn,” Nason said. In addition to the annual events, there are seasonal events including scavenger hunts and puzzle contests. It’s $50 per couple to join the club and each event ranges from $15 to $30 per person. Guests are welcome any time. “The people who are part of the Yacht Club are folks who don’t take themselves too seriously,” Nason said. “We all enjoy having a fun time and meeting other people. If you’re that person, you’ll easily belong.” Details: www.rhyachtclub.com, 704-302-7732.
Light N Up Houseboat Charters Looking to throw a party on the lake? You can’t beat the changing scenery, the plush accommodations and the full-service catering of Light N Up Houseboat Charters. The 75-foot houseboat offers three-hour bookings for up to 68 people. Typical cruises begin near T Bones at the Lake and ride past the sand bar, down area coves and up to the Belmont area of Lake Wylie. Cost is $1,400 for a three-hour booking. “A lot of our events are weddings and rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, family reunions and corporate outings,” said owner Nancy Bedgood. Still, there are plenty of people who just want to get together to enjoy a cruise down the lake. While the Light N Up Houseboat cruises are typically laid back, the boat is equipped with an indoor-outdoor stereo, CD player and karaoke machine for more rambunctious celebrations. Other parties take an elegant turn with ice sculptures, shrimp cocktail and gourmet cuisine. Passengers also can bunk aboard the houseboat, which accommodates up to 10 people.
Shoreline Bedgood is currently working with Christopher’s Bar & Grill to develop a dinner cruise menu that would cost around $45 per person. The cruises could begin sometime this summer. “No matter what time of day or what time of year you’re on the water, it’s a soothing atmosphere,” Bedgood said. “People enjoy chartering our boat because they can sit back, relax and enjoy everyone’s company. It’s nice to just be the passenger and let us take care of everything.” Details: www.lightnuphouseboatcharters.com, 704-813-8033.
Catawba Yacht Club When most people are making their way home from work across the Buster Boyd Bridge, a group of dedicated sailors are already out on the water for Tuesday evening sailboat regattas. Organized by the Catawba Yacht Club, the Summer Series draws about 15 sailboats for friendly races on the south side of the bridge. Cocktails and camaraderie also are part of the fun. “We meet about 6:30 because it’s getting cooler toward the evening and at that time of the day, you can typically count the number of power boats on one hand,” said sailor Charles Wood. “We get cruisers like mine that have cabins on them as well as M-scows, a hightech boat from Wisconsin that can be singlehandedly sailed and goes like a bat.” The Catawba Yacht Club also sponsors a fall, winter and spring sailing series that draws as many as 25 boats. “After the race, folks go back to the yacht club to cook hot dogs, drink beer and tell lies,” Wood said laughing. For Wood, a sailor with 58 years of experience, the Tuesday evening regattas are a great way to meet like-minded boaters, particularly on a lake dominated by power boaters. “It’s the camaraderie,” he said. “...Sailing requires a lot of expertise and thought about wind direction and wind velocity. The people you meet sailing are perhaps engineers and business people who want to get away from the day-to-day grind. It’s a thinking man’s recreation. And it’s about total relaxation.”
Boat rentals on the lake Renting a boat is always an option on Lake Wylie. Pier 88 Yacht Club offers boats that can accommodate a party of 1 or a party of 12. Pontoon rentals range from a half-day ($190) to seven-days ($950) and all of Pier 88’s pontoons are fully equipped. Single-man kayaks are available ($10 an hour, two-hour mini-
mum) and so are tubes (full-day only $30). Details: www.pier88yc.com, 803-831-0088. Wylie Boat Rentals is an Internet-based company that offers online rentals of its 20foot and 24-foot pontoons and two Sea Doo wave runners. Costs range from $200 to $350. Wylie Boat Rentals, owned by Chip and Julie Traub, rents its boats and wave runners for fullday and half-day increments on weekdays and full day slots only on weekends. Renters must be 21 or older and have some boating experience.
Renting a boat is the perfect option, particularly among former boat owners who still want a taste of fun on the water. “When you own a boat, you’re looking at $2,500 a year in dock fees, plus fuel, maintenance and insurance,” he said. “But when you rent, you pick it up nice and clean and full of fuel. At the end of the day, all you have to do is hand the keys back over.” LW Details: www.wylieboatrentals.com, 803370-BOAT.

Casting lines, making memories Story and photos by Gordon Smith

o you remember catching that first fish? Around here, chances are it was on Lake Wylie — locally known as “The Rivah.” You probably caught it on an old rod someone let you use while sitting on a dock, standing on the bank, or if you were lucky, you were in a boat. Maybe it was a small bluegill or crappie. For some, it may have been a catfish or bass. This brings me back to some of my first memories of catching fish. It was a little different for me. I was ice fishing with my father on Doc and Tom Lake in central Michigan. We caught bluegills and sunfish. I really don’t remember my first catch, but I’m sure it was with a short wooden pole with a small teardrop and a wax worm fished through a hole cut with an ice spud almost 50 years ago. Fishing here on Lake Wylie is something many of us love to do, and if you have a chance to take someone with you, please do. Young or old, male or female, just get out there and have
some fun on the water. There are so many options here on this wonderful reservoir. Whether you are a serious bass fisherman or just looking to put some fresh fish on the table, grab a fishing buddy and get out on the lake. Teach a child to fish and you will create a lifelong friend. Even if life pulls you in different directions and distance separates the two of you, the memories will live forever. Gordon Smith is an avid fisherman living in Lake Wylie. Send your fishing news, tips and photos to gordonthefisher@aol.com.

Q-2-U BBQ Pit and Catering Great food and a friendly staff are just two of the reasons Q-2-U BBQ Pit and Catering has become a go-to for locals hankering for a barbecue meal. Q-2-U opened last June in the former Tony’s Pizza in Lake Wylie Plaza on Highway 49. Q2-U offers catering services and a sit-down restaurant. The business is owned by Brian and Linda Rich and their long-time friends Mark and Renee Cieslikowski. “Mark and I have known each other for 32 years when we started working together at Continental Tire,” explained Brian Rich. “It started as a weekend hobby, cooking for different parties and get-togethers. Six years ago, we got serious about it and started competing. We did real well right off and in 2007, we were named the state champs of South Carolina by the S.C. Barbecue Association.” The Q-2-U crew traveled as far as New Jersey for barbecue competitions, earning team points for each win. As statewide winners for South Carolina, the local grill masters were invited to the prestigious National Barbecue Association competition in November 2008.

several tables and bar seating inside. Super-friendly Linda Rich greeted me and my two young daughters at the door, showing us to a corner table near a window filled with pig-topped trophies. Televisions, neon bar signs and a fill-it-yourself drink station keep the vibe very casual. The BBQ chicken plate ($7.50-$8.50 with two sides) was so tender, it practically jumped off the bone. The mac-and-cheese was the perfect blend of crispy on top and creamy underneath, and the tasty two-bite hushpuppies rival those served at any traditional fish camp. The spicy green beans have a definite kick. My girls both tried the Lake Wylie Short Dog ($3.99), a good buy for a half foot-long hot dog, a generous side dish and a fountain drink. Both were thrilled when “Miss Linda” brought them a complimentary frosted pink pig sugar cookie with a marshmallow snout for dessert. There’s a long-running and heated debate about North Carolina barbecue and whether Lexington or Eastern style is the best. But the Q2-U folks have found their own unique blend. “We like to call ours Lake Wylie style,” Rich said. “We started with a Lexington barbecue base, but we adapted it from there to get the taste we want. We make our own sauces — two vinegarbased and one thick and sweet — as well as our own rub. You can’t get this anywhere else.” Pork, chicken and ribs are the menu staples. The barbecue soaks in a rub for six to eight hours and is smoked for 14 hours. Q-2-U also has its own unique spices in its baked beans, which are cooked for a couple of hours every morning. “We probably get hired for our pork and called back because of our chicken,” Rich said.
Personal Chef Services | Dinner Parties | Gift Certificates “And our banana pudding is excellent. We consider that a vegetable too. It’s all good.” The Q-2-U BBQ Pit serves lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Barbecue and fixings can be bought in bulk for take-out. Q-2-U also caters parties for 30 to 700 people. For catered events, Q-2-U sets up a full buffet line, covers tables with cloths and cleans up for hassle-free summer celebrations. “You don’t have to worry about a thing,” Rich said. “We even clean it up and take it all away.” Details: Located in Lake Wylie Plaza near the Lake Wylie Athletic Center and Lake Wylie Public Library. 4052 Charlotte Highway. 803-8318883, www.q-2-u.com. Rey Azteca Just a few doors down from Q-2-U BBQ Pit, Rey Azteca welcomes customers with alfresco dining on its inviting raised patio. The patio occupies a newly remodeled space adjacent to the eight-year-old restaurant and features a metal roof, hanging ferns and whirling ceiling fans. Lunch and dinner are served on the patio at Rey Azteca, which also hosts karaoke beginning at 5:30 p.m. every Saturday. “We get all kinds of people and all ages here, from families with young kids to teenagers on dates to seniors,” said assistant manager Demecio Villegas. “Our take-out menu also is popular for people hosting parties at home.” Among the restaurant’s top choices, said Villegas, are the fajitas ($7.45-$19.99). Combinations include beef, chicken and shrimp served with shredded cheese, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, peppers, Mexican sausage and pineapple chunks. Sides include rice, beans, guacamole salad, sour cream and pico de gallo. “The seasonings are unique,” said Villegas. “Customers enjoy the mix of all those flavors together in one dish. Fajitas are one of our most popular items.” If you’re adding liquid refreshments, margaritas ($3.75-$6.95) are the best sellers at Rey Azteca. “We do strawberry, peach, pina colada, raspberry, orange, banana and the traditional lime,” he said. “The Texas Margarita is made with Jose Cuervo and Grand Mariner. It’s called the Texas because it’s bigger, stronger and made with the best.” Rey Azteca also serves several types of Mexican beer, including Dos Equis on draft, Corona, Corona Light, Carta Blanca, Negra Modelo and Tecate.

Although summer gatherings on the lake lean toward the casual, there are times when you want to put an elegant spin on your special get together or date night. Look no further than The Wine Shop at Rivergate, which doubles as a retail store and café that serves gourmet lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. “It’s a West Coast concept to marry a retail wine shop to a gourmet café,” explained wine steward David Thompson. “I worked at a place like this in Seattle in the 1990s, and now a decade later, it has trickled down here.” Opened in September 2008, The Wine Shop seats about 125 guests in its dining room, bar, patio and loft. More than 600 varieties of wine are available for sale, along with another 45 wines by the glass.

“We specialize in small production, high quality wine shop wines that aren’t produced to sell to mass retailers,” Thompson said. “Wine can be intimidating, but all of our servers are very knowledgeable. There’s no fear factor here. It’s a real casual, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.” The Wine Shop typically draws young professionals and young parents out on a date night or for a birthday or anniversary. Weekly wine tastings and monthly wine dinners are held in the loft, and live music is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday evening. Head chef Rafe Lockaby features different entrees each evening, with options such as black and blue ribeye ($13.99), cast iron salmon ($10.99) and pasta of the day ($8.50). There also is a “small plates” menu that features calamari ($6.50), crab cakes ($9), seared ahi tuna rolled in toasted sesame seeds with a wasabi soy glaze ($8.50), a hummus and tabouleh dipping trio with pitas ($7), or mussels with fries ($9). In addition, The Wine Shop serves multiple specialty flatbreads, panini sandwiches, salads and cheese plates. Desserts include crème brulée, chocolatedipped cannolis, espresso zabaglione and homemade sorbet ($5 each). “Our niche is affordable luxury,” Thompson said. “It’s a nice place to go out to lunch or dinner, but it’s not so expensive that you can’t come by often.” For summer entertaining, The Wine Shop also offers a full catering menu. “We do a lot of wraps, cheese and fruit trays, canapés, small dishes and a number of specialty dips for most of our customers who are entertaining,” Thompson said. A few of the popular wines for summer include Moscato d’Asti, a sweet Italian sparkling wine with a light alcoholic content of 5% to 6%. “It’s very refreshing and easy drinking on a hot summer day,” he said. “It’s the biggest rage now, especially among the urban crowd.” Dry rosés and medium-sweet Rieslings also are good choices, with plenty of fruit and flower notes such as strawberry and raspberry. “For summer, you want to go with something that’s light and refreshing versus heavy,” he said. “These wines are light in alcohol and light in body. They’re effervescent.” LW Details: 14142 Rivergate Parkway, Suite 200 in Rivergate Shopping Center. 704-831-0999. www.thewineshopatrivergate.com Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

LIVING By Susan L. Doyle, Photography by Richard Rudisill John and Jody Rusling knew when they purchased their home in The Landing on Lake Wylie, they wanted to do something with the backyard. It took them about one year – from the first idea to project completion – and the result was more than just adding a patio and a pool. They created a true outdoor living space that allows them to experience sunny days and starry nights any time of year.

he couple, who moved to Lake Wylie from Southern California in 2008, said they instantly fell in love with their home, which sits on about half an acre. The Ruslings also love to be outdoors and entertain, and they were excited about getting to do both in the temperate climate. So they set out to makeover their nice but plain yard into an exceptional space. They brought in Matt Bailey of Innovative Pool Designs to help with the transformation. He moved earth from one place to another, erected walls and ran lines — gas, electric, cable, irrigation and water — under the flagstone patio. He also installed a heated Pebbletec saltwater in-ground lagoon-style pool that was personally approved by the Rusling’s granddaughter. A spa that is nestled into stacked Virginia stone connects to the pool with a melodious waterfall. Anyone else may have stopped there, but the Ruslings chose to incorporate their entire backyard into their new “living” room. Guests are invited to explore the yard via a series of paths, steps and small landings — all made of Virginia stone — that were built into the natural slope of their property. There are nine conversation areas, Jody said, allowing a natural ebb and flow for guests to pause, reflect or sit and converse. Splashes of red, white and blue furnish-

Jody’s cutting garden — where giant zinnias will bloom from early summer to first frost — is tucked between the foxglove and a stacked wall. To the right of the pool, five inviting steps take guests to the two, very comfortable patriotic blue chaise lounges that call out for a good book and an ice cold glass of sweet tea. Jason Butler of Butler’s Landscaping created a low maintenance landscape for the Ruslings. He used pine straw in lieu of grass and planted more than 20 pink and purple azaleas with hydrangeas added here and there for color and contrast. To increase privacy and add to the intimate feeling of a living room, several Cryptomeria Radican — a very fast-growing evergreen tree — were planted along the back split rail fence and strategically placed among the azaleas. Variegated hostas line the path that leads guests past an inviting hammock to a fire pit set amongst pine trees. To achieve the desired look and feel, 10 trees were removed, but as Jody pointed out, “I put trees back that were already 10 to12 feet tall,” so the space would look finished. To the left of the lagoon is a row of radiant red Knock Out Roses that in another year or two will create a soft flowing privacy fence.

Beyond the roses, along the side split rail fence, Japanese red maple trees — John’s favorite — add understory accents and another privacy layer. Eventually, guests come back to the main conversation area. A raised open fireplace — with a key activated gas starter — has a stacked stone chimney. It anchors the left side of a honed granite counter with custom chunked edge. A flat screen TV — no living room is complete without one — sits on the counter between the fireplace and a polished steel gas grill, a cook’s dream. Built-ins include a sink, a small refrigerator, a utensil drawer and storage. A fanciful curved metal sofa with plush fire engine red cushions ties the space together. With entertaining comes good food and the Ruslings love to cook. Jody, who has a catering background, had space added just behind the fireplace and grill for an herb and vegetable garden. Last year they enjoyed basil, cilantro, tomatoes and green bell peppers. Next to the fireplace is a rosemary bush, which John said is convenient for adding, just the right flavor to a roasting chicken. As much as they enjoy entertaining, the Ruslings treasure the peace when it’s just the two of them sitting in their “living” room on that comfortable, red sofa. “What I love about here,” Jody said, “are the nights.” When the ceiling is the night sky, there is a lot to love. Summer gardening
I
t was a long hard winter, but now as we speed our way through the short-lived spring, here are a few things to consider for your summer gardening. Annuals are plants that have a short life cycle, but they are great for that “spark of color” you need in your home landscape. Most
annuals require 5-6 hours of sun with the exception of shade plants (impatiens, begonias, etc.). If your annuals are performing poorly on a fast-release fertilizer, switch to a systemic (granular) fertilizer like 10-10-10. feet. It may be a bit more expensive, but that’s all you’ll need for the entire season. When arranging your beds and borders, consider arranging them by height and when they will bloom. Also consider their color, texture and surrounding landscape. Always go for the waterfall effect — tall flowers in back should cascade to shorter plants in front. When planting herbs, good drainage is a must. The level of acidity in the soil should be 6-6.5, and I recommend using compost for fertilizer. Also, using too much mulch around herbs can cause root rot and attract unwanted insects. If you are planting a vegetable garden, make sure your garden has full sunlight at least 6 hours per day and place plants as close as possible to a water source. When prepping land, first perform a soil test. A pH of 6-6.5 is what you are looking for. Work compost into your soil to form beds at least 6 inches deep. Rotate vegetables that are in the same family to other areas each year to reduce insect and disease pressure. Most of all, plant plenty and share with friends!! Happy gardening! pring symbolizes growth and Lake Wylie has had plenty of it this season. Several new businesses have announced they will locate in the area, while a number of existing businesses have announced plans to expand. Also, several construction projects that have been in the works have shown a lot of progress. As we head into summer, we can only imagine Lake Wylie’s growth will continue to heat up. Here’s a look at what’s happening now in development news: The Estate Boys have more than doubled their retail space by opening a new store in Lake Wylie Plaza across from River Hills. The Estate Boys features a wide range of fine antiques, reproduction furniture, accessories, art, light fixtures, silver and china. Owners Ron Hunter and Paul Bayer previously owned a consignment store called Traditions of the Carolinas: Good Byes. It was located next to the Knothole and often held sales in the parking lot. Hunter and Bayer have taken the inventory from Traditions and moved it to their new location in Lake Wylie Plaza. This new location, which was formerly Lake Wylie Hardware, will be open each week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Hunter and Bayer are long-time local business men who also own and operate an estate sale and liquidation business and an interior design business. For more information, visit www.theestateboys.com. The rejuvenation of Lake Wylie Plaza is complete. Following exterior renovations to the middle and east wing of the 30-year-old plaza, the west wing — which houses David Wysor Fine Jewelry, The Cleaners, The Estate Boys and an insurance office — has received new stucco and a fresh coat of paint.

Getting started For Jeff Hall and his older brother Rick, the story of how they wound up in the boat business begins in 1971 when their parents, Rod and Fran Hall, moved the family from Rock Hill to Tega Cay. A year later, Rod Hall, an avid boater, decided he would try to build a dock. It took him two weeks to complete — with the help of his 11- and 12-year old boys — and it wasn’t long before neighbors were asking for Rod Hall to build docks for them. As the boys grew up, they continued to work alongside their father and soon the Hall men were building docks and sea walls. But much more was on the horizon. “The story goes, Dad was sitting at the club and a developer came up to him and
said, ‘Rod, you should build us a marina,’” Rick Hall said. “What started in casual conversation led to a life-changing event.” The developer had a piece of unimproved land on which Rod Hall built 25 slips and named Tega Cay Marina. The Halls eventually added a small store to the marina, which Fran Hall managed. In 1976, Rod Hall purchased Pier 49 Marina on Lake Wylie and renamed it Lake Wylie Marina. A friend of his left a boat at the marina and told Rod Hall he could sell it if he wanted to. “I did, and that’s how we got into the boat business,” Hall said. Operating both marinas took the entire Hall family. “In the early years, while Dad was an engineer at Duke Power, my mother,
who has always been the strength in the family, ran the Tega Cay Marina,” Rick Hall remembered. “Every morning and evening Dad would attend to his second job — Lake Wylie Marina.” The Halls owned both marinas for about 10 years, but sold the Tega Cay Marina in 1987. Jeff Hall said the boat business was a fun place to grow up. “Being a 16-year-old kid with a boat,” couldn’t get much better than that. Still, it was guaranteed if your dad was Rod Hall and he owned a business, you would be working. “From sun up to sun down, we pumped gas for a dollar an hour,” Rick Hall said. “Got to see pretty girls and lots of boats though.”

Faces After college, the brothers could have gone right into the family business but, “Dad’s philosophy was for us to go out and experience working for someone else,” said Jeff Hall, who went into general retail. Rick Hall moved to Florida to work in marine accessory sales. “We have always worked for family,” he said. “In hindsight (working for someone else) was the best thing we could have ever done.”
the Halls continually promote. “The greatest thing about boating is the family togetherness,” Rod Hall said, “We look for ways to get people out and enjoying their boats.” Hall Marine Group offers in-house boating classes, as well as on-the-water training for new owners. They also sponsor community events like cookouts at the Lake Wylie Marina dock every Thursday night in June, lake-wide scavenger hunts and boating rendezvous.
Hall Marine Group has enjoyed many good years, but they were not immune to the recent turbulent economy. “We weathered the storm better than our competitors,” Rick Hall said. “Our parents raised us with conservative values and principles. We have been very conservative in our approach to business and were able to simply right-size the business to fit the situation,” Jeff Hall added. This approach to business and the “fair
Growing with Lake Wylie As Lake Wylie grew from a quiet fishing lake to a destination lake for living, Lake Wylie Marina also grew. In 1980 Rod Hall had a vision for a 22,000-square-foot dry storage building that his competitors said he would never fill. “Within four years, we built another one,” he said. Soon after, the brothers came “home” to work for their father. Jeff Hall worked at Lake Wylie Marina and Rick Hall went to Charleston to run a Sea Ray dealership. Over the next 10 years, the dynamics changed and Rod Hall’s sons were no longer working for him, they were working with him. Hall Marine Group continued to grow, adding four more dealerships, each carrying the Sea Ray name. In 2004 Rod Hall sold the business to his sons. He has more time now to travel and work in his woodworking shop. “Still,” Jeff Hall said, “we use Dad as a consultant. Three heads are better than two.” Though Jeff Hall now sits where his father used to and Rick runs things in Charleston, the philosophy of the company remains the same. “Dad always treated people well,” Rick Hall said. “He said, ‘Just be fair and honest and treat people right.’”
Hard work pays off More than 75% of the boating business is repeat business. Hall Marine Group carries Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Scout and Harris FloteBote pontoons, along with pre-owned and brokerage boats. For the Hall family, customers become friends. To keep in touch with their friends, the Halls have Facebook fan pages for each of their six locations. “The whole social networking has led us to meet new customers,” Rick Hall said. “It’s also a great way for us to talk with our customers,” Jeff Hall added. Hall Marine Group’s mainstay may be sales and service, but it’s the boating lifestyle that

With more than 5,000 boat dealers in the country and approximately 800 applications per year, Hall Marine Group has consistently placed in the top 10. “I am real proud of the boys for that,” Rod Hall said. “They look at everything,” Jeff Hall said, “our professionalism, our business practices, our facilities, how we service our customers.” Receiving this recognition also is a great boost to employees’ confidence. “The biggest thing we have going is we have great people.” Jeff Hall said. Many employees have been with the business for 20 to 25 years, a rarity in the boating business where employees are often seasonal. The awards also tell Hall Marine Group customers and future customers, “See, we are here for the long run.” LW

A new concept in healthcare delivery
new concept in healthcare delivery brings comprehensive care closer to home for the Lake Wylie community. As the first of its kind in the region, the healthcare pavilion at CMCSteele Creek offers a wide range of multidisciplinary care in a single, convenient location. “The core of our facility is a 22,500-square-foot, freestanding Emergency Department, which offers direct access to the region’s only Level I trauma center,” says Debra Eident, Director of CMC-Steele Creek, “Whether a patient is experiencing a heart attack or dealing with broken bones or open wounds, the board-certified emergency medicine physicians and highly-trained medical staff provide a higher level of care — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” While the full-service Emergency Department is the hub of this innovative facility, CMC-Steele Creek — part of the Carolinas Medical Center family — also offers a variety of other important medical services all under one roof. The healthcare pavilion is home to a retail pharmacy, advanced diagnostic imaging (64-slice CT scanner, ultrasound and X-ray), laboratory services and some of the region’s most trusted physician practices, including Charlotte Pediatric Clinic, Mecklenburg Medical Group and Piedmont Gyn/Ob. In addition, CMC-Steele Creek features a community room for meeting space, that accommodates up to 65 people and is offered free of charge to the public. As part of CMC-Steele Creek’s commitment to excellence, all physicians and staff are dedicated to providing exceptional medical care with a personal touch. In addition, each aspect of the facility — from the warm décor and natural lighting to the children’s play area and private, windowed patient rooms — is specifically designed to provide patients and their families with a memorable experience. Recently, CMC-Steele Creek partnered with science teachers at the School of Biotechnology, Health and Public Administration at the Olympic Community of Schools to provide students with laboratory equipment for the classroom. In addition, leaders at the healthcare pavilion were able to connect track athletes from the Olympic Community of Schools with rehabilitation services at Carolinas Rehabilitation. “When CMC-Steele Creek opened last November, we made a promise to be a vital part of this community — to truly make a difference,” says Eident, “Our direct access to the comprehensive services in the Carolinas Medical Center family enables us to impact the community in a way that reaches far beyond our walls. It is a great privilege to serve this fine community.”

Are you ready to take your business to the next level?
W
hether you are just starting a company, wanting to increase your profitability, needing to improve your systems or wishing to expand your operations, let business coach Keith Spiro make your goals a reality. Spiro owns the Lake Wylie branch of AdviCoach, the premier source for business coaching and advisory services customized for small- to mid-size businesses. He opened in January with the primary goal of providing business owners across the Carolinas with the awareness, education and accountability to increase their profits and meet their business goals. “Coaching is very different from consulting,” Spiro said. “A consultant tells you what to fix and then leaves. A coach is a mentor who will work with you to identify issues and implement solutions that can have a rapid impact on your profitability.” The process begins with a two-hour session during which Spiro meets with a business owner to discuss and develop an individualized game plan using AdviCoach’s Rapid Impact Strategies. “One of the first questions I ask the business owner is, ‘If I can help you overcome the number one problem in your business, what would it be?’” Spiro said.
Following the initial meeting, business owners choose from a variety of coaching programs ranging in price and participation levels. “It just depends on how much time the owner has to spend working on their business,” Spiro said. “The business owners and I work together to develop solutions to their problems, but they are responsible for implementing them, and our weekly sessions help to hold them accountable.” “Some of my best clients are companies that are already doing well but want to take their business to the next level,” Spiro said. “And, what I’ve found is that the start-ups want to work with me because they don’t want to learn by trial and error — they want to do it right the first time.” Spiro said his 18 years of experience working for industryleading Fortune 500 companies have helped him gain insight and develop tools that enable him to help startups and established businesses manage the threats to their business and turn them into profits. “What I do is not magic,” Spiro said. “As an outsider, I see things a business owner may not. You, as the business owner, are the expert in your field. I’m the expert in growing a profitable business.” Your success is AdviCoach’s only business.

Here, you will see your reflection in the congregation here is more to you than meets the eye!” Christ the King Church is a place of discovery. It is not about perfection, it is about connection — with God and with each other. From its modest beginnings in the auditorium of Lake Wylie Elementary School to a congregation of 400 worshipping together in a 12,000-square-foot facility, Christ the King Church has always been a reflection of the greater Lake Wylie community. Its membership includes young and old, retired and working, those with families and those who are single, as well as those from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Christ the King, which is located on Highway 49 just south of the new CMC-Steele Creek, is a community at its heart — one that connects people with each other and with Christ to create a more fulfilling life. It just might be the place for you. Some people are drawn to Christ the King because of the music — message-driven contemporary music is featured at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Some are drawn to the church because of the teachings, both in Life Groups and in worship services — contemporary biblical translations with practical daily living applications. And some people are drawn to both.
Sunday worship includes a traditional service at 8 a.m., two contemporary services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and Cristo el Rey, a Latino worship service at 2 p.m. There is also a student ministry called RAW: Real Answers for the World, which is held at 5:30 p.m. for students in grades 6-12. It’s easy to walk in the door at Christ the King. The welcoming environment feels like your living room - comfortable and casual. They come to get connected or reconnected. Christ the King is about building awareness of a relationship with God and with others. It’s an authentic place that is warm, inclusive and inspiring. So inspiring, that even those who may think they don’t need “church” come to realize the value of “church community” in their daily lives. They experience life together and make a difference in the world around them. People express the joy they find seeing a better reflection of themselves and their families. “We strive to find deep connections with each other and with Christ in our faith journey,” Pastor Craig said. “It’s not just about Sunday; it’s about relationships that help people discover how ‘church’ enriches every aspect of their lives.” So, bring your ideas, your fears and thoughts about what “church” means and let the true reflection of you shine.

Unique custom homes and commercial spaces
oug and Laurie McSpadden of McSpadden Custom Homes are well known in the Lake Wylie area for creating homes and commercial spaces that present a fresh, new approach to traditional building paradigms. Doug McSpadden, who has been in the custom building industry for more than 20 years, has spent much of this time engineering systems and procedures that focus on project development at the front end so that the actual construction phase becomes more predictable and refined. “Building is a multi-step process,” said McSpadden, who is a graduate architect, real estate broker and general contractor. The process begins with studying a piece of property and then pulling the customer’s entire team together — including the architect, builder, and in many cases the interior designer and landscape designer — to produce a unique and individualized home or office. They apply this philosophy to every project that bears their name. With the recent challenges in the construction industry, the McSpaddens realized a change was needed to stay viable. So they assembled a focus group of seasoned homeowners to study their wants and needs. Feedback from the group inspired McSpadden to design a home like never before.
“This design has us very excited,” McSpadden said of the custom single-family home he is building on a waterfront lot on Lake Wylie. “It’s a new style of architecture that I have wanted to create for a very long time. This will be a most beautiful expression of what I call ‘organic contemporary.’ It will make a statement all its own.” This new project, which is expected to be completed and unveiled next spring, will appeal to numerous market segments and should serve as an incubator for fresh, innovative ideas. It will also be environmentally friendly, a philosophy McSpadden Custom Homes followed long before “green” became an industry buzzword. “In some respects, the shift that occurred in the construction industry has been an opportunity for invention,” McSpadden said. “I see it now as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves and our craft. This next project is a reflection of this reinvention as it showcases more creative, more responsible architecture.” This new direction is exciting, creative and innovative and the team at McSpadden Custom Homes hopes this new architectural statement will be the first of many to come.

CMC-Steele Creek and the Lake Wylie Chamber present 2010 Splash Dash
T
he Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce and presenting sponsor CMC-Steele Creek have teamed up to make sure this year’s Splash Dash is a hit with runners and their families. Chamber President Susan Bromfield said, “Due to the positive response to Splash Dash, we added more awards and age categories for those participating in the 5K run. This decision was made in order to provide the 5K runners and families with more opportunity to compete in all levels and win.” Bromfield said the 10K run has always been the “star” component of Splash Dash. This is the category in which the more competitive, long-distance runners participate. She explained that the 5K was added as a way of attracting more people to run at Splash Dash and so families can participate at a variety of levels. Later, awards were added to the 5K, to make it a bit more competitive. For those who do not wish to run, there is a 5K walk. The 10K and the 5K races will both have the same number of awards. An overall first place prize will be awarded for the top male and female runners in both races. First, second and third place awards will also be awarded for males and females in various age categories, for a total of over 120 awards and medals to be presented. “Our great location, the scenic and challenging race course through River Hills and exceptional hospitality for our participants, combined with the addition of ChampionChip technology to the race and the expansion of awards for 5K race participants will make Splash Dash a wonderful event,” Bromfield said. “The goal is to make this event ‘family-friendly’ and to give opportunity for all age groups to compete and feel good about their run.” Splash Dash takes place Saturday June 12. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Camp Thunderbird, which is located at One Thunderbird Lane in Lake Wylie. The races begin at 8 a.m. Runners and walkers may register prior to the event ($20 for the 10K and 5K races, $10.00 for the 5K walk) until Thursday, June 10. Registration will be accepted by mail (P.O. Box 5233, Lake Wylie) or by visiting the Chamber offices at 264 Latitude Lane, Lake Wylie. Registration is also available at www.sportoften.com. Same-day registration for runners is $25. Colorful T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and to the first 100 walkers.
