From the Publisher Dear Reader, Welcome to our first edition of Market Facts. We envision this book as a tool for our readers to use when composing or updating business plans. Based upon our own experience in gathering facts and data to support our own expansion, we found out what a pain it was to find everything we needed. We realized the information, compiled and published in an easy-to-read form, could be just as useful to you. Market Facts is a useful companion publication to our annual Book of Lists. The combination of the listings of largest companies in most of the major business categories in the Book of Lists with the statistics and other data presented in chart, graph and table format in Market Facts gives you a pretty good grasp on the region’s business community.
Contributing Writer - Lydia Dishman
The combination of Market Facts and the Book of Lists amounts to a “Who’s Who and What’s What” of Upstate business and government when used in tandem.

Each year, we will tweak the way we present the information to improve readability and content. If you are like me, you can quickly go cross-eyed reading data tables. So we have included art, shading and highlighting of important facts; and included footnotes and explanations to help make the data easy to use. I believe you will find Market Facts a useful tool in business planning and research. I also want to recognize our title sponsor, Spirit Telecom, and all of our section sponsors and advertisers for enabling us to provide this valuable resource for the region’s business decision-makers.

EMPLOYMENT & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
U
nemployment rates have hit historic highs in the Upstate, the manufacturing heartland of South Carolina. And the state’s jobless rate has been the third-highest in the nation. In June, state unemployment topped 12%. And while the rate jobless rates have moderated slightly, unprecedented numbers of Upstate residents find themselves unemployed and without prospects of employment for the first time in their lives. During the past year, most of the state’s job losses have been in manufacturing, transportation, tourism and professional and business services, according to data from the S.C. Employment Security Commission. But there are signs of renewal in the Upstate manufacturing sector. BMW Manufacturing recently announced it will add production shifts and hire 700 temporary workers. GE Aviation said it will triple its workspace to 150,000 square feet and hire an additional 200 workers to make turbine blades for jet engines. And local leaders and industrial development offices are abuzz with talk of bio-medical, electric cable and other manufacturers looking at the region for possible new plant sites.

reenville County Schools, the 51st largest public school system in the nation with 68,796 students, offers one of the most diverse education experiences a family is likely to find in America. The almost 100 public schools and special centers in the district include 14 high schools, 11 magnet academies, and 12 International Baccalaureate schools. There are 17 Palmetto’s Finest schools, an award for the state’s high-achieving public schools; 13 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence; 28 national PTA Schools of Excellence; 34 Baldrige Model Schools; and 40 Red Carpet schools, an award given by the state to honor customer-friendly schools. As a sign of achievement levels in the district, 92.3% of graduates in the 2007-2008 school year are pursuing higher education, and garnered $84.9 million in scholarships. The district is also one of the county’s largest employers, with 9,138 employees, including 5,034 teachers. MEDICAL & HEALTH CARE
A
s the Upstate’s health care community plans for the future, construction projects and expansion plans are ongoing throughout the region. Medical employment accounts for a large number of jobs in the region.
Greenville Hospital System, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and AnMed Health System dominate the health care sector in the region. All have expanded their reach in recent years. Spartanburg Regional built a freestanding hospital, the Village at Pelham, on Highway 14 on the border with Greenville County, while Greenville Hospital system built a new hospital in Greer to replace the aging and hemmed-in Allen Bennett campus on Wade Hampton Blvd. AnMed took over management of Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens, while Greenville Hospital System gained a management stake in Easley Baptist Hospital through a 50-50 partnership with Palmetto Health of Columbia. Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center is planning an academic medical campus on Grove Road that eventually could host as many as 400 medical students, and a new pharmacy school.
