MARKET FACTS From the Publisher Dear Reader,

Sales Manager - Salley Tyler styler@scbiznews.com

Welcome to our second edition of Market Facts. We envision this book as a tool for our readers to use when composing or updating business plans. Based upon our own experience in gathering facts and data to support our own expansion, we found out what a pain it was to find everything we needed. We realized the information, compiled and published in an easy-to-read form, could be just as useful to you.

Market Facts is a useful companion publication to our annual Book of Lists. The combination of the listings of largest companies in most of the major business categories in the Book of Lists with the statistics and other data presented in chart, graph and table format in Market Facts gives you a pretty good grasp on the region’s business community. The combination of Market Facts and the Book of Lists amounts to a “Who’s Who and What’s What” of Upstate business and government when used in tandem. This year, we have added a new section highlighting the Financial Services industry as well as a number of new data sets in our other sections. To make the information easy to read, we have included art, shading and highlighting of important facts; and included footnotes and explanations. I believe you will find Market Facts a useful tool in business planning and research. I also want to recognize our title sponsor, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, and all of our section sponsors and advertisers for enabling us to provide this valuable resource for the region’s business decision-makers.

nemployment rates remain high in the Upstate. In January and February, state unemployment remained steady at 12.5%, but April showed improvement with the rate dropping to 11.6%. The state’s jobless rate is still slightly higher than in surrounding states. While the jobless rates have moderated, unprecedented numbers of Upstate residents continue to find themselves unemployed and with limited prospects of employment. Job losses from layoffs and plant

closures in the Upstate rose from 4,586 in 2008 to 5,044 in 2009. On the bright side, Greenville County has already announced 1,700 new jobs created in 2010, effectively canceling out the 576 losses announced to date. Signs of renewal are indeed popping up throughout the Upstate, with recent announcements in manufacturing and high-tech sectors. BMW Manufacturing Co. will soon complete a $750 million expansion and add more than 500 positions to produce the X3 Sports

Activity Vehicle. CT&T and the 2AM Group in Duncan announced a joint venture to produce electric vehicles. GE Aviation said it plans to triple its workspace to 150,000 square feet and hire an additional 200 workers to make turbine blades for jet engines. In addition to all the announced projects, local leaders and industrial development offices are abuzz with talk of bio-medical, electric cable and other manufacturers looking at the region for possible new plant sites.

he state of the economy has meant significant funding difficulties for Upstate schools, both K-12 and higher education. In spite of slashed budgets, separation incentives and tuition increases, education in the Upstate is big business.

USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics opened next door to the Chapman Cultural Center, extending the schools campus into downtown Spartanburg. The city of Spartanburg has also cleared the way for a new downtown cam-

pus for Spartanburg Community College. SCC plans to draw up to 3,000 students to the Evans Building, which will house an accelerated Honors College program and offer pre-college coursework. Furman University is setting the pace for “green building” among

local educational institutions, having earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for its fourth building on campus. In a move that will quadruple its solar energy output on campus, the university has recently installed solar panels on its

Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center. Last fall Furman received a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for a new environmentally friendly and energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system for the North Village student-housing complex. Meanwhile, Clemson University has broken ground on the Center for Emerging Technologies at its International Center for Automotive Research campus in Greenville. It is the first multitenant building on the research campus, expected to be complete by spring 2011. “This building, which offers space for emerging companies in transportation and energy sectors to develop technologies based on Clemson research or technologies that complement the research of our faculty and students, completes the innovation chain from the laboratory to the consumer end-user of technology,” said Clemson President James Barker.

Market FactS Did you know? • One out of two schools in South Carolina has at least 70% of students in poverty. • One quarter of schools have 90% of students in poverty. • Only 6% of schools have fewer than 33% of children in poverty. • Only 47 schools, or 4%, serve populations of 30% or less in poverty Source: James T. Hammond editorial, GSA Business, August 31, 2009

Education, Lottery For every dollar earned by the S.C. Education Lottery, 26.4 cents goes toward education, according to the Lottery Commission. Since 2002, Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson counties have received more than $240 million for K-12 education, scholarships and libraries. Greenville County has received more than any other county. Distribution of lottery funds by county included: • Greenville: $117,220,816.06 • Spartanburg: $76,459,624.40 • Anderson: $47,015,056.82 Source: GSA Business, November 24, 2008

espite continued uncertainty stemming from national health care legislation, the Upstate’s health care community is moving forward with expansion plans and advances in technology for patient care. Greenville Hospital System, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and AnMed Health System dominate the health care sector in the region and each has expanded its reach in recent years. Meanwhile, Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood has announced the opening of its new advanced surgical operating room, BrainSuite iCT, and the fall opening of the South Carolina Spine Center. This center will allow

for the treatment of patients with a variety of spinal problems using technology that shows surgeons images of the brain, neck and back during surgery. In support of the industry, Clemson University will create a $10 million Center of Economic Excellence in Health Facilities Design and Testing to conduct research, develop prototypes and expand knowledge on how health-facility design impacts health and health care delivery. The center will focus on the relationship between physical health care environments in four areas: health outcomes and patient safety; patient, family and staff satisfaction; operational efficiency and ef-

fectiveness; and ability to accommodate change. With health care professionals in high demand, local hospitals and universities are enhancing programs to train qualified doctors, nurses and technicians. GHS is planning a new pharmacy school and an academic medical campus on Grove Road that eventually could host as many as 400 medical students. In partnership with Spartanburg’s Wofford College and Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine broke ground in February on its Carolinas campus, scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.

tightening credit market and more stringent lending standards held back growth in the financial services industry in 2008 and 2009. And in the midst of the economic turmoil, mergers and acquisitions have caused so many name changes across the banking and financial services sector that, at times,

it’s difficult to know who’s who. Regional and community banks that didn’t make large investments in Fannie Mac and Freddie Mac mortgages have weathered the economic crisis better and haven’t been saddled with the foreclosures and devalued mortgage-backed securities that led to consolidation across the financial sector.

This section sponsored by:

The financial services landscape has indeed changed but banks are still lending. From June 2008 to July 2009 more than 30,800 mortgage loans were originated and purchased in South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Bankers Association. There were more than 17,450 small business loans.

n a recent study by Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research, South Carolina received ‘C’ marks for benefit costs and tax climate, a ‘C-’ for logistics and a ‘D’ for human capital and venture capital. The state’s worst marks were in productivity and innovation, for which it received an ‘F.’ The state’s best grades were an ‘A’ for global reach, a ‘B+’ for diversification and a ‘B’ for manufacturing. While our strengths will eventually bring us out of the current economic difficulties, our weaknesses will most certainly hinder our upward progress. Use this section to contact your legislators.
