St Cuthbert’s Junior School I am delighted to provide you with an insight as to what makes our lovely little Junior School uniquely positioned to enable your daughter to be happy, to discover and grow, and to develop a mindset which will enable her to believe in herself and find what is truly her ‘element’. The Junior School years are some of her most important and most formative, and it is our privilege to be able to work with your daughter to identify her strengths, and any areas we may need to strengthen, as we get to know her as a unique individual. Our teaching and learning is driven by a commitment to approaches that empower your daughter’s thoughts, questions and interests to inspire her curiosity and give her the courage to explore in her learning. We balance this approach with our new and exciting Knowledge Rich curriculum; empowering our girls to delve deeper into their learning to gain a greater interest, connection and understanding of all the subjects taught. Why St Cuthbert’s Junior School? From her very first day at St Cuthbert’s, we will ignite your daughter’s curiosity for learning. We are a Knowledge Rich school, which means that our teachers have deep subject knowledge, and work from a strong conceptual framework to support your daughter to feel confident, engaged, and keen to learn and explore. Young children need to feel a sense of belonging and connection, and we believe that smaller class sizes, led by a dedicated teacher, are an integral part of their feeling happy and safe. All of our students are supported by hugely experienced support staff as well as the expertise of specialist teachers from across both the Junior School and also the Senior School for areas such as Languages, Science and Technology. Your daughter’s teacher will really get to know her, and will understand how she best learns. Igniting a Passion for Learning Working in multi-levelled groups with both younger and older girls, our students have the opportunity to take risks in a safe and supportive environment, to learn to work well with others, as well as to be confident working alone.

PEACE
Through a number of innovative and exciting initiatives, St Cuthbert’s Junior School is able to offer a totally unique approach to learning.
Philosophy, Ethics, Attributes, Character/ Citizenship, and Exploration (PEACE) are explored within our Junior School at a level appropriate for each age and developmental stage. Exploring these less standard learning areas ensures that no part of your daughter is developing in isolation; as one dimension develops, we are able to see all other parts of her learning and interests expanding too.
STRETCH
FOUNDATION FITNESS YEARS 0-3
Initiatives such as our STRETCH programme introduce the girls to the exciting discoveries of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) from a young age. We encourage our girls to step out of their comfort zone and take risks in a supported environment. Our girls experience diverse STEAM subjects such as robotics, coding, computational thinking, engineering,
Girls in Years 0-3 benefit from our daily Foundation Fitness programme. We know that a child’s sensory and physical development impacts on their ability to remember what they see, hear and do. Our daily activities help to develop each girl’s fine and gross motor skills and as a result we see them improving their social and physical capabilities, growing more confident in their abilities, and becoming more engaged in their learning.
Future-Focused Learning from Solid Beginnings Your daughter’s generation is growing up in a digitally connected and interactive global environment. To be able to confidently navigate life’s challenges and opportunities, our approach to learning from a young age ensures they will develop the emotional, academic, and social skills to thrive.
We place a huge emphasis on ensuring every student has a firm grasp of arithmetic, literacy and writing. Our targeted teaching allows us to offer extension to those girls who may benefit from greater challenge, as well as excellent learning support should there be any gaps in her learning, ensuring that each girl has a well-rounded education and is able to thrive to her full potential.
Achieving her Personal Best Our passion to truly know your daughter, and our emphasis on a Knowledge Rich approach to learning, supports girls of all ages and stages to thrive as they become the very best versions of themselves. By getting to know each child, we are able to tailor programmes that provide the right level of support where needed, and to also extend her learning.
Our specialised team provides learning support programmes, individualised learning plans, and booster programmes for gifted students. We encourage each child to “give it a go” and offer them the chance to experience a wide range of Music, Sports, PE classes, Drama, Art and more – all on-site and with expert teacher support.
Values Programmes, Wellbeing and Global Citizenship Being part of a larger school means our youngest girls have opportunities to interact and be supported by older St Cuthbert’s girls. Our ‘Big Sister’ programme provides our Junior School girls with older role models who are caring, aspirational and nurturing.
Our Junior School Global Citizenship framework is an important part of supporting girls to develop the skills to be successful. Our curriculum supports girls to think about the world, how we are all connected to one another, and how we can have an impact.
Across the school, student ambassadors display their leadership skills by having fun with their ‘Little Sisters’, ensuring they feel supported in their home away from home. ‘By Love Serve’ is at the heart of all we do at St Cuthbert’s, and, in particular, our Values Programme gives all our girls a chance to contribute to their community.
In the Junior School our girls learn kindness, belonging, respect and sharing. They understand that no matter how big or small one is, it’s okay to ask for help. As our girls prepare to graduate from Year 6 and step up to Year 7, we work with them through a dedicated transition programme to ensure they feel confident, curious, well-equipped and motivated for the next chapter of their learning
Clubs to engage your daughter Our teachers and Senior School girls have worked together to create a selection of clubs running before school or during lunchbreaks. There is a huge variety of activities girls can choose between to ensure they are not only entertained but learning new skills too. Our incredible teaching staff have tapped into each of their own interest areas to allow girls to discover new talents or further explore their creativity.
Each year we update the clubs ensuring we offer plenty of variety from a selection such as a Glee Club for our divas, a Book Club for avid readers, a Kapa Haka Club, a German Language Club, a Badminton Club, a Gymnastics Club, a Little Dance Club run by Senior Students, a Maker Space Club and even a Mindfulness Club.
Nurture her all day We offer a wide range of co-curricular activities to support your daughter’s development and exploration, both during the school day, and after school.
From Year 4 your daughter can attend private Drama, Art as well as Speech and Communication classes after school, gaining valuable technical skills along with confidence in public speaking.
Private Music lessons are held before, Your daughter is also able to participate in during, and after school. Your daughter a wide range of sport, year round. Club Evergreen
Leading facilities
Club Evergreen, our After School Care programme, runs every afternoon of the school term. For busy parents rushing from work, collecting other children and negotiating traffic, knowing that their child is in a happy, safe environment is invaluable.
Our Junior School girls benefit from St Cuthbert’s state-of-the-art facilities such as the Performing Arts Centre, new swimming pool complex, a dedicated Junior School gymnasium, turfed playing fields and plentiful play areas for exploration.
Our experienced teachers make the girls very welcome and have afternoon tea waiting straight after school along with a great variety of games and creative activities such as cake decorating and gardening. On fine days the girls go out to play before activities and supervised homework. Many girls come before or after Sport, Music or Drama practice or whilst waiting for buses.
St Cuthbert’s is well served by transport from all parts of Auckland, including a private bus network that leaves from North, South Central, East and West Auckland. We operate a buddy system for our Junior girls on the buses whereby an older St Cuthbert’s girl is responsible for keeping a Junior School girl company on all bus journeys for her comfort and your peace of mind.
