Library News With the final event on the V8 Supercar Series having now been run and the championship decided at our newest circuit in Sydney, and a new magazine recently arrived entitled PROFESSIONAL MOTOR SPORT CIRCUIT, it is interesting to look at circuit design and history. I visited Homebush frequently for work before it became the site for the Olympic Village and could never imagine that a motor racing circuit would be there. Touring Car Champion Mark Skaife had a lot to do with its design, but even so the green groups required a three meter narrowing of the track in one of its fastest parts, annoying the drivers and teams, and making it more exciting for the spectators. This past year we have seen new tracks used at Townsville and Hamilton NZ and many other places around the world. What about some of the older and famous circuits? Some are still being used and some have returned to dust or even become housing estates. We have dozens of books of stories from the world’s circuits, just come into the Library and tell us which is your favourite circuit or event. One book on Australian circuits stands out: FAST TRACKS, AUSTRALIA’S MOTOR RACING CIRCUITS 1904-1995. Who remembers some of these names from the past? Albany and Busselton in WA, Darley and Undera in Vic, Catalina Park and Schofields in NSW, Strathpine and Surfers Paradise in QLD, and Quorn Hall and Longford (my favourite) in Tasmania. PAUL MURRELL is compiling a history on Port Wakefield. If anyone has information, like press clippings, photos or even anecdotes, Paul would be pleased to hear from you. He can be contacted through the Library or on 8338 9175. RON JOHNSON is doing the history of Collingrove, a very important Club asset. He would also appreciate your help. He can be contacted on 8251 3719. Peter Mussared has generously supplied us with Brooks Book number 7 for our overseas commitment. We are grateful for this. Thankyou for support during 2009 and we have a good selection of new books coming in early 2010, all made possible by your generosity. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL From the Library – Connecting People with Information Email us at sccsalibrary@internode.on.net

HRR News Planning for the 2010 Mallala Easter Historics is well under way with this also being the opening round of the Historic Touring Car Association’s racing calendar. A full field is expected. A super sprint demonstration may also be trialled along with a concourse/show and shine day on the Sunday. A Historic Eligibility Officer is still required for South Australia; if you are interested give me a call for details. MB 0417876484 CAMS has some great new information technology improvements up and running on the web site such as an individual portal where you can modify your own details and officials can text CAMS to find out if a your license is current. Merry Xmas or Happy Holidays to be politically correct and lets look forward to a great 2011. No HRR general meeting in January 2010 Cheers from the HRR Committee

Fleurieu News Coonawarra Weekend 13-16 November 2009 On Friday 13th, in record heat conditions 30 SCC members set off for the Fleurieu group’s annual weekend away, this year to the Coonawarra. Rendezvousing at the Keith Hotel for lunch with lots of laughter the scene was set for a great weekend. In convoy the group made their way to the Coonawarra where they checked in to the Chardonnay Lodge. After settling in the members all gathered in the rotunda in the centre of the complex for a barbecue dinner and by then a welcome respite from the heat. On Saturday morning they lined up in the front car park to compete in the Margaret & Geoff Roberts annual “Mystery Run”. There was lots of fierce competition with many setting records for u-turns as they strived to answer several difficult questions. The run culminated with a most enjoyable lunch at the Kincraig Hotel in Naracoorte and finally a leisurely drive back to Chardonnay Lodge for some R & R. That night guests were served a delicious a la carte dinner in the very elegant dining room at the Lodge. During the course of the evening the results of the day’s “Mystery Run” were announced by Margaret Roberts and many participants were presented with fun prizes amid much laughter and banter taking place throughout the room. Congratulations went to the winners of the perpetual trophy, a joint effort by Dennis & Pat Crowhurst and Brian & Rosemary Sawley. On Sunday morning the group strolled across the road to The Poplars Winery where they were treated to a walking tour of the massive winery complex and given an insight in to the entire process of wine making. From there the school bus transported the group to Di Giorgio Winery for wine tasting then on to Heyward’s Royal Oak Hotel in Penola for a leisurely and sumptuous lunch. The return journey took in stops at Balnaves and Wynn’s wineries for more wine sampling before reaching Chardonnay Lodge. The farewell evening was held in the rotunda and following a light casual dinner everyone joined in the fun by participating in the party games organised by committee member Christine Finnis. The Fleurieu Group and its Chairman, Noel Roscrow, extend their sincere thanks to Judy & Garry Rainsford for their organisation of a very successful and fun event. Fleurieu Runs for 2010 Sunday 17 January – run leaving from the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club, Barrage Road, Goolwa at 10.15 for 10.30 and finishing for lunch at the Newton residence, Liverpool Road, Goolwa. Please bring your lunch, chairs, glasses etc. RSVP to Ali Roscrow, 8555 2029 or @bigpond.net.. Sunday 28 February – Dawnbuster Run Sunday 11 April – Dawnbuster Run Sunday 2 May – May Day Luncheon Sunday 26 September – Mid morning Run Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 October – Weekend away Sunday 14 November – Mid morning Run.

Dad’s Army and Other Volunteers For those members who do not know about Dad’s Army, they are group of members who come in on Tuesday morning’s and assist with maintaining the Clubrooms and garden, as well as any other odd jobs to be done. If you are interested and have some spare time on Tuesday mornings (it doesn’t need to be every Tuesday), give us a call in the office Wednesday to Friday 8373 4899. Morning tea / coffee and biscuits are provided. There are also other opportunities where volunteers can have a lot of fun. One such opportunity is catering for a group of ladies (known as the Ionians) on the fourth Wednesday each month. This involves making sandwiches with a group of ladies and you are normally rostered on every second month. Once again, contact the office for more information. A special lunch was held in December to thank volunteers from Dad’s Army, the Ionian Group and the Library team.
