Sports adds more than wins, losses he next 25 pages contains the pictures of 29 varsity winter sports teams from all of Sullivan County’s eight school districts. There are several more teams which we couldn’t get in front of a camera, which would bring that total to 34 teams. That translates into approximately 500 varsity athletes competing in interscholastic sports competition this season. That is a terrific number. And while less than a handful will go on to play organized sports in college, we feel high school sports is an integral part of our children’s education and development. Competition, striving to improve and learning how to interact with others are all important elements in our children’s education. We commend these students for putting in the time and effort which is needed to be on a varsity team and also applaud the parents for the many missed meals, late nights and dedication it takes to keep your child playing. Many of our young athletes will not appreciate their days on the hardwood or at the track until much later in life. But rest assured, it will be an experience which will certainly help mold you into a better person…hopefully a person with meaningful values instilled by your coaches, parents and friends. We know full well the tremendous sacrifice it takes to succeed at anything and while many times wins and losses get in the way of the true score, we know full well that all our student-athletes in this section are winners. Keep up the good work and don’t ever give up!

Eldred boys’ basketball counts on key returnees BY ANYA TIKKA
E
ldred boys’ basketball Coach JJ Gass expects the season to be very competitive this year in Class D. “So, it’s going to be a fun year,” said Gass. “It’s that [competitive] spirit that helps the teams give their best.” Eldred made it to Section IX championship game last season but lost to perennial power Coleman. Their overall record was 5-15, 4-4 league. “This season we are hoping to get back to sectionals,” said Gass. “We return the majority of the team from last year. Some younger players moved up from last year’s JV team to help round up our team.” Top returners from last year are Dave Powers, Bray Curreri, Nik Dilles, Peter Vorstadt, Jake Halter, and Tim Worzel. Key players lost to graduation include Anthony Margarum, Mike Donnelly, Nick Stymacks, and Connor Frazier. “This year should be good year for the team,” said Gass. “We are looking to stay competitive in our nonleague schedule and hoping to get a shot at the league championship.”

Young players key to girls’ hoop success BY ANYA TIKKA
‘W
e have a lot of young players so it's going to take some time to get where we want to be,” Eldred girls basketball coach Ryan Jasper said about his team prior to the season. But Jasper feels hopeful. “We're going to have to work extremely hard early on to be competitive, but if we rebound well and we defend at a high level consistently we will be successful.” He felt the team had to work hard to improve on last year’s record of 4-14 and to contend for the league title. “We have a mix of seniors and sophomores/freshmen with nothing in between (no juniors) so we need to get used
to playing together. Kelsey Collins, Jess Schips, Sam Banghart and Nicole Elvin give us some good size up front so hopefully we can use that to our advantage.” When asked about possible weaknesses in the team, Jasper explained, “Our strength will be our defense and our weakness will be the inexperience of the younger players. “We’re still learning the new system for the older ones but time will help with both of those things so it should be an exciting season. We hope to improve on last year’s record and continue working hard and improving each day.” He continued, “In the back court we’re going to be pretty young – but very talented with
Jordan Lepes, Kate Reiser, Sheila and Jenna Burns, and Rebecca Morgan, who’s currently out with an A/C separation. We hope to get her back at some point. Hannah Bisland is coming back from major knee surgery and new to the team is Destinee Arnold who transferred from Honesdale High School.” Key losses to last year’s graduation are, Kayla Kelly, Steph Lee, Abby Ellert, and Erin Angus. underneath, the Comets will be depending on Shomo more than ever this season. “He can play the guard position and pretty much every position on the court,” says Dworetsky. Along with Shomo, Pinder and Fannings, Dworetsky also names point guard Brandon Berardi as a key player this season. And with a 31 record thus far, the Comets seem primed to make that fourth sectional appearance. But Dworetsky – never one to get ahead of himself – remains grounded: “We are a really young team this season without much experience,” he says. “We’re really just looking to get better and better every day. We’d love to make sectionals again but number one is academics and to become better players.” To a Great Season… Go Comets!

hough Fallsburg boys’ basketball coach Pete Dworetsky lost nine players to graduation last year, and carries a thin, young roster of only eight total players this season, the eighth-year coach is still looking to make his fourth straight sectional appearance. Comprised of three seniors, one junior, three sophomores and a freshman, Dworetsky’s squad is certainly young, but as the coach says, “all eight of my guys bring something very unique to the table and as long as I see improvement on a day-today and game-to-game basis, I think we’ll be just fine.” Key returners for the Comets include guard Nick Pinder, guard Jeremiah Fannings and center Ahmad Shomo. Though Shomo didn’t see much time last season – due to academic issues – according to Dworetsky, “he’s back this season with a new attitude and he’s been outstanding for us thus far.” A versatile athlete on the court with a deadly jump-shot and presence

aving reached the first round of sectional competition last season, first-year Fallsburg girls’ basketball coach Lucile Carter-Harris is looking to achieve even more this season. Having lost eight players from last season’s squad to graduation, Carter-Harris says her key players to watch this season are returning starters Nyasia Harris (center) and Tiffany Sutim (point guard). Losses to graduation and an early season 1-3 record notwithstanding, CarterHarris maintains some lofty goals for her team this season. “I’m looking for us to reach sectionals again this season and for us to clinch that sectional title,” she said. “I’m looking for day-to-day improvement, but we’ve never had a girls’ banner to hang in our gym. I’d really love for us to finally get that first banner this season.”

T
he Liberty’s boys basketball program had a tough season last year (3-13, 0-6 OCIAA) and coach Dave Slater is simply looking for game-to-game improvement from his young team this season. So far this season, the Indians have posted a 1-3 record and says Slater, “we’re a young team and we’re hoping to grow and mature as the season progresses. It’s going to be a game-bygame progression, but I’m looking for us to build as a team and win some more games [than last season].” According to Slater, his top returning players are seniors Chris Santiago and Julian Spina. Another player to watch, says Slater, is Stephen Johnson. “Last season was tough,” offered Slater. “This season I’m happy to improve game by game, and we’ll just have to see how the season ends up.”
Members of the 2013-14 Liberty boys’ basketball team are: (front row, left to right) Stephen Johnson, Lyndell Olmo, Shakree Gibson and Kareem Pierre; (middle row, left to right) Morris Schraeder, Ignacio Feijo, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Chris Santiago and coach Dave Slater; (back row, left to right) Grant Harman, Michael Burke, Phillip Cohen, EJ Allen, Tariq Johnson and Julian Spina.

Freshman Savannah Reck is starting at the all-important point guard position this season, and according to Quatrale, “she’s been doing a great job of handling the pressure of being a varsity point guard in her debut varsity season.” With a sophomore at center, it’s a mix of old and new for the Lady Indians this season; a season where Quatrale says she’s looking for consistent improvement from her squad. “As a team we’re looking to get better every single day,’ says the fifth year coach. “Whether it be in practice or in a game, we’re looking for marked improvement out there. he Lady Indians basketball team finished last season with a 6-12 record overall. But with returning All-League seniors Tea Williams and Erin Kinne, coach Beth Quatrale is looking for a sectionals run in 2013-14. With both Williams and Kinne running the floor at the forward position, the Indians have struggled to a 1-4 record thus far. “We found ourselves in tight games against O’Neill and Sullivan West to start the season, but in both cases we came up on the short end,” offered Quatrale. Even so, Quatrale sees a lot of potential in her squad and blames the early loses to fundamentals: not converting open lay ups as well as shots in the paint. “Once we can put those chip shots in the basket, I

ivingston Manor’s boys’ basketball coach Charles Hicks has big expectations of his young team. “We’re hoping to win our division and make a run for the section title,” he explained. His expectations are based on recent history. Although last year’s record was 6-12, the previous year Hicks took his team all the way to the state final four. The team’s record then was 16-5. So what happened? “I graduated 12 seniors [in 2012],” Hicks recounted, “and only two returned last year.” “We may not be young in age, but young in sports,” he continued. Looking ahead, Hicks will be counting on juniors Matt Janik and

Terrance Lockhart, both starters a year ago. Another key player is senior center David Dutcher, who also saw quite a lot of playing time last year. “We’re still playing up,” Hicks said. “We’re a little low – the graduation [in 2012] hurt us, losing that many. This is still a transition period. “We know what to expect, we’re young, working hard, and have expectations,” he continued. Hicks is starting his 11th year as a varsity coach. He knows what it will take to get back to the state final four. “You have to have a mix,” he explained. “Kids who buy into the program, have athletic ability and skill level and a desire to win.” He also mentioned a good supportive atmosphere that fosters sports helps.

the first quarter and down by only three at the half before losing to the tough O’Neill squad in their first league game of the season. And Sullivan West hoped to pick up its first win of the season last night on the road at Liberty in a class rivalry showdown.
But weather, holiday, illnesses and other circumstances have kept players sidelined all season. “I’m looking forward to getting the whole team together,” Nober said. “The junior class is really strong. They have Ronj Padu, Brian Stauch and Richard Shevak, all of whom
played last year. Two seniors, Chance Bibbo and Owen Andrews, also return to the squad from a year ago. But two big losses, three-point specialist Matt Cardona, and feisty point guard Sawyer Erlwein left two holes to fill which will take time to replace.

oming off a 3-15 season with no league wins, Coach Pat Donovan is optimistic his young team, which returned virtually every player, will improve in 2014. Donovan said his team has a lot of fight, play hard and never quit. Though they have already lost three games in this weather-interrupted season, Donovan feels they will get better as the season progresses. KAYLA GRECO | DEMOCRAT

T-V boys eye sectionals STORY AND PHOTO BY ED TOWNSEND

n discussing 2014 sectional play with Tri-Valley boys’ varsity coach Brian Tingley, he quickly expressed the fact that "I would be disappointed if we don't make it into the sectionals this year." Several of the players anticipate a good season. The team last season won their first game in the sectionals against Chester and finished with a 12-8 record. They lost their sectional semifinal game to Pine Plains, who at the time were ranked No. 1 in the state in Class C. When asked what the team looked like at this early stage of the season Tingley said, “we should be quick if nothing else.” He pointed out that he has a very fast team and that “they work well together, pass the ball well and they like to be around each other.” Tingley stressed that rebounding will be key to his team’s success, both offensive and defensive. He said he wants to see more shot blocking. When asked about the offense Tingley said, “we have the speed here to get up and down the court and we got some guys that can play inside, players that can shoot outside and we have guys who can also handle the ball." Returning players from last years team include Alex Brown, Devin Donnelley, Mike Post, Sam Tingley, Donntae Brock and Jesus Lozada. Stephen Carleton and Thomas Mungeer. Moving onto the varsity team from his position as team manager is Kainin Justiniano. Tingley noted that a new transfer student would be trying out for a team position and that the squad will consist of 12 or 13 players. While talking about the varsity team being able to acquire some of last year’s undefeated JV team, Tingley pointed out, “they will find it different when
coming up to the varsity level because up here you can't overpower people and the scouting is better.” In conversation about sectional play Tingley noted, “it’s not going to be easy for us because Chester is going to have a very good team as they didn’t lose any important players and they also had a very good JV team that will add to their strength.” He also feels that Seward should also be a tough opponent.

Kelly, Jessie Leszczynski and Danielle Shafarsky. Closs said that the strengths of the team are, “their work rate, conditioning, getting up and down the court
and working their fast breaks. Chuck Reynolds, head coach of Minisink Valley will certainly attest to their quickness and speed as “they ran us and down the court” during the Lady Holiday tournament. “Conditioning is very important to us as it allows us to play the type of basketball that we want to play which is to get up and down and to get into teams on defense and dictate how the game is played,” Closs added. Closs said the team is “very guard heavy and we are undersized at our forward positions but they will be physical.” The varsity girls’ team has made the sectionals the past three years but coach Closs didn’t give a prediction despite the impressive start. “We’re going to take it one game at a time and I told the girls early on let’s not think what we can do, let’s get busy doing.” Way To Go Teams!!

he Tri-Valley girls’ basketball team is off to a 6-0 start and ranked No. 4 in the state. They won the Lady Raider Holiday tournament for the first time by defeating two Class AA schools in Minisink Valley and Middletown. Jason Closs is the new coach moving up from the Tri-Valley boys’ junior varsity where his team last season posted a perfect 16-0 undefeated record. This will be his fourth year of coaching on the varsity level and he brings to the court 12 total years of coaching. When asked if there were any difference between coaching a boys’ junior varsity team and a girls’ varsity team, he said, “I went from a boys team last year that worked very hard, really practiced well and was very coachable and now I’ve moved to a girls program this year at the varsity level with athletes that are very similar to what I had last year.” In looking at the upcoming season before the unbeaten start, Closs sensed he had a strong team. “These girls are hard-working, they have been well-coached in the past by former coach John Tenbus and is
