‘A real, down-home, country fair’ BY AUTUMN SCHANIL
T
he Grahamsville Little World’s Fair began in 1878, a year when the first telephone was installed in the White House, Edison made electricity available in the home and Harley Procter introduced Ivory Soap. Back then admission was just 10 cents and 425 people attended that first day. The Little World’s Fair has been held every year for the past 137 years – except for 1928, when flood waters took out the bridge and destroyed the fairgrounds – making it the longest running independent fair in all of New York State. It’s a fair that still holds onto its old-fashioned rural charm while also offering new, fun games, rides, shows and activities for the whole family. “The Little World’s Fair is a real,
At noon on Saturday, August 20, the Draft Horse Pull will be held in the main ring. Always a crowd favorite, the Draft Horse Pull is sponsored by the NYS Draft Horse Pullers Association.
down-home country fair, said longtime attendee Lynn Aylesworth of Fremont. “No matter where you’re from, you just feel at home. Between the people, the food, the animals and the great shows you could easily spend the whole day there. “And you can’t go wrong with the fried dough, she laughed. Besides the spinning, turningstomachs-upside-down rides and the classic win-a-giant-stuffed-animal games, you’ll have the chance to feast your eyes on a magic show, line dancing, tractor pulls, a tug-ofwar, an animal adventure show and a watermelon eating contest. The Sullivan County Youth 4H part of the fair will unofficially begin on Wednesday, August 17 with pen and building set up, evaluations and registration. Then on Friday, August 19, get ready for the Open Horse Show, the Sheep and Goat Show, and later, the Alpaca Agility Show.

The 4-H barn is always filled with great things to see. This pig and her piglets were on display several years ago but we are sure there will be more animals to see this year and even a horse show, sheep show and goat show. Check out page 9 for a complete Youth Fair schedule.

Pull! Dig in your heels! Give it all you’ve got! Tug-of-war is played in just about every country in the world and this year, for the first time, it will be played at the Little World’s Fair in Grahamsville. Taking place in the Main Ring of the fairgrounds at 5 p.m. Saturday, August 20, teams of five will compete for a minimum grand prize of $500, a rotating trophy, and of course, winners bragging rights. Better yet, each participant will receive a complimentary admission ticket to the fair! If tug-of-war isn’t quite your slice of pie on Saturday, perhaps a slice of watermelon is. Hosted by Nate Gilmore of Gilmore’s Melons, the Watermelon Eating Contest will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 on the Center Stage. It’s bound to get both messy and sticky, as the competition is hands-free. There will be five age groups ranging from seven to 11, 12-16, women’s open, men’s open, and finally, seniors.
