Winter sports reminders and tips! W

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM ith winter sports underway, in an effort to provide local athletes and their families with important information, we interviewed Dr. Mikhail Itingen, DO. Dr. Itingen is a physician with Catskill Regional Medical Group, and specializes in orthopedics, and is also part of Catskill Regional Medical Center’s orthopedic surgical team. While each sport has their own set of common injuries and tips, something relating to all winter sports is the importance of having calcium and Vitamin D. Itingen explained that the lack of sunlight in the winter causes our bones to be weaker. Therefore, consuming the proper amounts of Vitamin D and calcium are crucial. For calcium, drinking milk and eating yogurt and cheese are recommended. Also, according to Itingen, our muscles are tighter in the winter, which increases the risk of injury. “Warm ups should play a big role,” he said. “Stretch arms, legs and your back. Spend more time warming up in the winter.” He added that the muscles in your

heart must be in good shape before any activity. Dr. Itingen identified the most common injuries per winter sport and gave some tips to remember. Skiing The worst injuries are to the head and the spine and neck twists. There are also some leg injuries. “Never ski alone, wear a helmet, watch for weather changes and have the proper clothing,” Dr. Itingen said. He added that kids get injured more often than adults, oftentimes because they have hand me down equipment. Indoor Track Turf toe is a common injury and is often misdiagnosed. There is also the risk of stress fractures. Itingen says it’s important to have a pair of good sneakers and change them every 300400 miles of running. Basketball Common injuries occur in the lower extremities, such as ankle injuries (sprains and fractures), wrist sprains, knee sprains, torn muscles, quad injuries. Almost all of these are caused by overuse. His tip: Like track, having good sneakers are important. In basket-

ball, Itingen recommends high top sneakers. “For all these sports, most injuries happen at the slow part of the game, when people are tired,” Itingen said. “Make sure you don’t overdo anything. Make sure to rest.” Wrestling Facial injuries are most common, as well as elbow and knee injuries. All should be treated by an orthopedic surgeon. What do Catskill Regional Medical Group and Catskill Regional Medical Center offer? Dr. Itingen is in his office at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris five days a week. “We are always keeping an eye on these injuries and are available to help all the time,” he said. “If I’m not there, I’m working with emergency providers who notify me of the injuries.” “We do all the trauma and most non-operative orthopedic injuries,” Itingen said. “Ninety-eight percent of pediatric [orthopedic] injuries heal with casting.” He added that CRMC’s orthopedics department also works with both kids and adults when it comes to do

low extremities, most hand injuries, sprains, dislocations, knee scopes, shoulder injuries, tendinitis and more. He also had high praise for Catskill Regional Medical Group's new Urgent Care Center in Monticello. In the event you are concerned about an injury, don’t put it off. Always have it checked out! In summary, Dr. Itingen says, “Dress well, hydrate, have the right equipment, don’t [play] alone, be safe and get out there.” Dr. Mikhail Itingen received his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, and a Residency in orthopedic surgery at Peninsula Hospital Consortium in Far Rockaway, NY. Dr. Mikhail Itingen is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Mikhail Itingen provides orthopedic care, including sports medicine and orthopedic trauma surgical services. He sub-specializes in orthopedic surgery for the ankle and foot. To reach Dr. Itingen, please call Catskill Regional Medical Center at 845-794-5335.

An indoor track primer Runners, jumpers and throwers vie for personal records and team honors gyms. These factors taken together require indoor track athletes to evince great perseverance and effort in their events. f the three running seasons indoor track is by far the most grueling and demanding. There are those late night returns from Friday night meets at West

where schools are classified by size from the small ‘D’ schools to the larger ‘A’ schools, in winter there are only two classes ‘A’ and ‘B’. For Sectional purposes all of the Sullivan County schools except Monticello compete in the ‘B’ championship meet. To compete at the state qualifier an athlete must meet the Section IX state qualifier standard (See those pictured). Those standards are different from the state meet standards (also pictured). To compete at states an athlete must be one of the top two finishers at the state qualifier meet, which pits all Section IX athletes against each other regardless of school size. A third place finisher who meets the state standard can also

Sullivan West’s Mike Mullally (far right) and Monticello graduate My-Kell Farrar (fourth from left) vie in the 55 hurdle finals at the NYSPHSAA championship last March 3. Farrar was second among NYSPHSAA athletes and Mullally was third. They finished fourth and fifth in the Federation standings that included NYC, Catholic and Independent School contenders. Mullally is currently ranked first in NYS in the event. Farrar moved on to SUNY Cortland where he played football this past fall.

qualify for states. There are six divisions in the OCIAA. Monticello is in Division III, Liberty is in Division IV, Fallsburg is in Division V and Sullivan West, TriValley and Eldred are in Division VI. Many indoor track athletes view the

season as necessary preparation for spring track. Indeed for athletes who did not compete in winter, it is very hard to catch up to those who did. Some indoor track athletes will move on to other spring sports but the vast

majority will move right into spring track. Keep an eye on upcoming issues of the Sullivan County Democrat for information on indoor track performances and the results from the key meets.

Big Three lead the way for Fallsburg

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM he 2016-17 OCIAA Division IV winners, the Fallsburg Lady Comets, are off to a good start this season, having already earned wins over multiple division opponents. Their success once again revolves around a group of young women their coach Dan Redmond (the 2017 Sullivan County Democrat Girls Basketball Coach of the Year) calls, “The Big Three.” The trio is made up of senior Diamond Weeks, who recently became the school’s all-time leading scorer, passing Sam Copeland who held the accolade for many years. Sophomore Amanda Zeno and junior Zariah Williams are also strike fear in the area defenses. All three worked in the offseason to get better. Zeno went and played on a couple of AAU teams, and participated in

T

showcases competing against the best of the best, while also attending training sessions a couple times a week. Weeks also participated in several showcases, and once again trained with Gym Ratz in Florida, NY. According to Redmond, Weeks also spent several hours playing pick up against males to increase her physicality and make her stronger. Williams also played many hours on the local courts to work on her skills. She spent many hours close to home just working on her craft. In addition to “The Big Three,” another key player is senior Sierra Barbiani whose shown tremendous improvement and growth, dominating the boards and adding an inside scoring threat. “Sierra is a young lady that has grown so much from freshman year,” Redmond said. “She has gotten better

and better each year. She has learned from all the coaches a little more and more each year and has taken the advice and run with it. She was part of the OCCC summer league team as well as coming to any open gyms and any opportunities to play basketball anytime. She has gotten some personal training with some basketball trainers and her game has flourished to the next level.” All four girls took part in an OCCC league team coaches by Redmond this summer, which helped build their team chemistry. Despite tremendous regular season success last year, the team was upset by eventual Section 9 Class B champion, Highland Huskies, who shocked multiple teams on their road to the State tournament. Redmond scheduled a much tougher schedule for the Lady Comets this season. “My motivation behind making a tough schedule was the ability to make us more prepared for different possible sectional opponent,” Redmond said. “We have run into a buzz saw the last couple of years by losing to Marlboro, Spackenkill and Highland. I have learned that they play a different type of basketball on the MHAL side and I realize the more different types of opponents we play, the more prepared we will be. It gives me a chance as a coach to strategize against different types of things that can be thrown at my team.” The Lady Comets have two big home games coming up on January 17 and 19 against division rival Chester and local rival Tri-Valley, whose led by Morgan Shamro who played on the same OCCC league team as the ‘Big Three’ over this summer.

Coach: Chris Russo Last season's record: 5-15 Key returning players: Alberto Florez, Dameion Nedd, Shykel Hilliard, Onyxx Clark, Kevin Lebron Key losses to graduation: Sam Stanford, Jaquan Pool-Porter, Dominince Brownridge, Shawn'e Eagan. Key games: Our Division games are really important to us - Cornwall (1/3 & 2/7), Goshen (1/10, 2/13), & Port Jervis 12/21, 2/1). We also play in several benefit games - Dick "Coach" O'Neill Jingle Ball Classic, Slam Dunk Heart Disease, and the BCANY vs Cancer Classic. Coach's comment: We have a nice mix of returning players and new additions from JV along with some players who have come back to us Khadeem Richards and Tyriek Whidbee. We are a hard working group that is athletic and aggressive. I really like the direction we are headed and the group of guys in the gym they want to get better each day, they want to compete, and want to win. It is a special group of kids that are getting the most out of their talent.

Boys Basketball Outlook

BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM The boys basketball season has gotten off to an exciting start as eight county teams have been working diligently to improve their game and be at their best for the latter half of the season! Here’s an outlook on their divisions‌

OCIAA Division III The Monticello Panthers are off to a 3-4, 1-0 OCIAA start. They’re in a four-team division featuring Goshen, Port Jervis and Cornwall. Like the Monties, Goshen also won their division opener. Cornwall currently has the best overall record at 5-2, but the division is wide open. Panthers’ Coach Chris Russo’s coaching experience paired with a loaded roster makes Monticello a team to keep your eye on. OCIAA Division IV This division features two Sullivan County schools, Liberty and Fallsburg. The Comets are off to a

good start, having beaten the Indians last month, a team that beat them twice in 2016-17. With two division wins, Fallsburg holds a comfortable lead at this point in the season, as no other teams in OCIAA Division IV have earned a league win yet; however, there is still several more division games left. The other two teams in the division are Chester and James I. O’Neill, who currently hold .500 overall records. OCIAA Division V Tri-Valley and Sullivan West are in this division with S.S. Seward. The Bears are off to a 5-2 start, and already earned a big division win at home against the Bulldogs. Both T-V and SW will have quite a challenge in slowing down an S.S. Seward team led by John Guerra that’s undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state among Class C schools. OCIAA Division VI Of all OCIAA divisions, this one is

what most Sullivan County schools call home. Roscoe and Livingston Manor have gotten off to ideal starts, each winning two Division VI contests, while Eldred traveled to Roscoe on Friday for their first league game of the season. Fred Ahart’s Blue Devils

already earned a win over the Wildcats and are on an impressive win streak, having recently swept through the competition at the Downsville Tournament over the holidays. Ahart’s group lost to S.S. Seward in last year’s Section 9 Class D championship game.
