When blizzards and heavy winds shut down our roads and knock out power, they’re ready to respond to the storm and open up their doors for those with no where else to go. If someone is trapped in their car after a violent crash, they’re there with the jaws of life to help free them. What’s probably the worst day of someone else’s life is just another day on the job for these volunteers. This year holds an even more special significance because the firefighters parade coincides with a week full of events dedicated to our veterans and remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City, Shanksville, PA and Washington D.C. There are few greater examples of the selfless sacrifice of firefighters than what the world saw 18 years ago at

Ground Zero in lower Manhattan and The Pentagon in D.C. In the weeks and months after those attacks, hundreds of fire departments and EMT companies throughout the nation, including Sullivan County, traveled to New York City to assist with recovery efforts. We still haven’t forgotten their bravery and look forward to the Rock Hill Fire Department hosting this year’s 9-11 Memorial Service in conjunction with the Monticello and Wurtsboro Fire Departments. Finally, we’d like to thank the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition and everyone who was involved in bringing the AVTT Vietnam Memorial Wall to Rock Hill from September 11th through September 15. It is fitting and appropriate that the wall will be escorted from Woodbourne to its temporary home at Frog Field in Rock Hill by local fire departments, EMS and police agencies. Anyone who has seen the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. knows what a mov-

ing experience it can be. The replica coming soon to Sullivan County is sure to be an unforgettable experience. While the week’s events include live music, food and fun, it’s really a time to think about the sacrifice and dedication of all of our fire departments, EMTS, police and veterans. They truly represent the best of America and we’re very proud to call them ours.

The annual Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association Firemen’s Parade brings together fire departments from throughout our area and beyond. It’s our chance once a year to thank all the firefighters, EMTS, police agencies and first responders for the amazing work they do. Day or night, rain or shine, this dedicated group of predominantly volunteers stands ready to react to any and all emergencies that could arise. We typically think of firefighters as rushing to the site of a burning building and assisting those at the scene while they battle to get the flames under control. They do all of that and so much more. When the rivers overflow their banks and cause devastation in our communities, our local firefighters are there to help people escape with their lives.

Who: The Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. is hosting the 91st Annual Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association Parade which recognizes all those volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to protect their communities. What: 91st Annual Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association Parade When: Firemen’s Parade Lineup begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. Parade begins at 2 p.m. Live music performed by Far Beyond Gone will take place from 3 - 7 p.m. The parade award ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. with the raffle award winners chosen at 8 p.m. Where: The Parade Route will take place along Rock Hill Drive before turning onto Glen Wild Road. Other events: The public is welcome to view the AVTT Vietnam Memorial Wall all day on Saturday, Sept. 14. The wall will be available for viewing on the Rock Hill Fire Department’s lighted ballfield starting at 2pm on Sept. 11, 24 hours a day Sept. 12, 13 & 14; and until 2pm on Sept. 15. On Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. there will be a special 9-11 Memorial Service hosted by the Rock Hill Fire Department in conjunction with the Monticello and Wurtsboro Fire Departments. A frog’s tale

T

he Rock Hill Fire Department has served the community for 63 years. What you might notice is their trucks look a little different than most. The exterior is lime green and a frog’s logo graces the emergency vehicles. But how did that come to be? Almost 20 years after RHFD’s formation in 1956, it was decided in 1973 that a brand new fire truck was in order. A committee of members was formed and after much contemplation on what truck to buy, a visit was made to the Ossining Fire Department to inspect their new FWD all-wheel drive fire truck. With a few modifications to Ossining’s truck design, the committee began to list out the customized specifications that they required for what was to be the first fire truck to The Frog Pad, better known as the Rock Hill Firehouse, sits on Glen Wild Road in Rock Hill. be custom built for a fire department in Sullivan County. The length of the truck, the size of the compartments, the pump and tank specifications were all under consideration. Not to mention the two top-mounted reels of one-inch water hose that could be pulled off and “charged” with water at once when upon the scene of a vehicle or small fire. But probably the most pondered and history-making decision to be made came down to the exterior color of our newest “Pride of the Fleet.” The cost for the brand new fire truck was $53,000. The truck they had sampled in Ossining was the standard “fire engine red” which seemed pretty ordinary to the committee. Upon examination of the color charts that were provided by the truck salesman, a blend of colors that consisted of “Seagrave yellow” and was mixed with a lime green tint to make a unique color that was referred to as “Rock Hill Green.” It was the first fire Rock Hill Fire Dept. “The Frog.” A wet down (a celebration that is given when a department gets a new truck to show it off to other fire departments and the public) was held with 4-0 being on exhibit inside the firehouse’s four-bay garage that existed then, and it was our show piece. It was at this time that the firehouse on Glen Wild Road became known as “The Frog’s Pad.” Shortly after the wet down, a local Monticello sign painter who had gold leaf lettered the new beauty and bestowed one last finishing touch. He visited the firehouse with the reason, he said, “to touch up an area of his work.” When he emerged from underneath the truck it was found that he had left a frog portrait with the word “ribbit” next to it on the front drive differential casing almost as a branding. This branding still exists today. Truck 4-0 was in service for about 12 years before Lou Tunno of Westbrookville was hired to refurbish it in about 1987, during Drew

In early 1975, the new 1974 FWD truck, which sported a Seagrave fire truck body and FWD all-wheel drive chassis, was almost ready to be put in service. RHFD’s Ex-Chiefs Dick Tremper and Leon Harding accompanied Chief Charlie Grant to Clintonville, Wisconsin, for their final inspection and were charged with driving the new FWD, “Truck 4-0,” back to Rock Hill. During the evening of their visit while in Clintonville there was spotted in a store, a small rug decorated with a frog design. Chief Grant made the comment that the new truck looked like a big green frog (mostly due to its color and its body height on the four-wheel drive chassis) and the purchase of the rug was made. Before Truck 4-0 left the factory, a large piece of plywood was mounted across the front to protect it from highway hazards and debris on the way back. Once the crew of three were almost home, in Matamoras, PA, they borrowed a staple gun and stapled the “frog rug” to the plywood barrier on the front of the truck. Upon its arrival in Rock Hill, Truck 40 began its history of being known as

The Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department was started in 1956 when three community-minded men, John Behrens, Bill Bensinger and Dick Benson, met and saw the need to establish a fire department. A few weeks later they were joined by Dick Bailey and Rudy Finke. On July 28, 1956, the first official meeting of the new Rock Hill Fire Department took place in the basement of the Methodist Church. At the meeting, Dick Benson was named President, John Behrens, Vice-President, Richard Bailey was named Secretary and William Foss was Treasurer. Gilbert Foss was named the Chief and Ed Case Assistant Chief. The Ladies Auxiliary was started about the same time with Mrs. Mary Bailey as President, Mrs. Luella Benson as Vice President, Mrs. Evelyn Barton as Secretary and Mrs. Marge Finke as Treasurer. On June 12, 1957, the first fire truck was purchased from the Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey Fire Department. The truck was a 1934 Seagraves 500 GPM which cost $300. In October of 1957, the present firehouse property was purchased for $2,500 and a brand new 32' x 52' firehouse was constructed by the members at a cost of $13,000. On January 28, 1959, Assemblyman Hyman E. Mintz introduced a bill in the State Legislature to create the Rock Hill District. The

bill passed the legislature on March 12, 1958 and was signed into law by Governor Averell Harriman on April 18, 1958. The first public meeting of the newly-formed Rock Hill Fire District took place on Tuesday, December 2, 1958, when the first Board of Fire Commissioners were elected. Elected to office were David Jaffee, Vincent Dollard, Arnold Sheeley, Andrew Gordon and Martin Gottlieb. John Behrens was named the Secretary and Treasurer. The Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department answered its first alarm on July 1, 1959. As of 2016, the Department maintains 7 pieces of apparatus, 3 chief vehicles, 2 ATV rescue and brush fire units, along with 2 rescue boats. They have added a new modern, lighted softball field complete with bleachers, concession stand and median scoreboard, and during the summer they host a softball league. In addition to the ball field, they built a youth soccer field, a children’s playground and a park for the entire community to enjoy. The Department is an active participant in the community and is a proud sponsor of the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Little League. Each year they award $3,900 in scholarships to deserving high school graduates.

ment purchased 4-0 back from an individual near Pittsfield, Mass. in 2007, who had refurbished it to nearly “The Frog” of the Rock Hill Fire Department that it was before its sale. Amid a great deal of conversation among RHFD members, a team of five, Gary Smith, Michael Hoyt, Steve Gottlieb, Dale Sonnenschein and Chet Smith made the trip to see if our one time pride was worth the asking price to get it back. Needless to say the recovery team bought and drove the “Pride of The Fleet” home to Rock Hill. Truck 4-0, “The Frog,” had found its way back home to “The Frogs’ Pad”, the Rock Hill Fire House. Today, at RHFD, the firefighting engines, the tanker and the rescue trucks are all this unique color of “Rock Hill Green” and helps carry on the department’s proud traditions. And that’s how “The Frog’s Pad” got its name. Rock Hill Fire Dept.’s trucks are now all painted ‘Rock Hill Green.”

henever Tom Hendrickson talks about his grandchildren, his eyes well up with tears. “I am a sentimental a-hole,” said Hendrickson laughing as he wiped away his tears. Words are not needed when you see his tears, you just know he is proud of his family’s legacy in Bethel and especially about his grandchildren. “I love them,” said Hendrickson. “They do an excellent job, they are fantastic.” The Hendrickson and Cunningham families have been serving Bethel and Sullivan County over 80 years. It all started with Claude Henry Hendrickson, Tom’s father, who joined the White Lake Fire Company in 1936. The White Lake Fire Company began responding to calls in 1927. after spending three years in the Army while stationed in Germany. Hendrickson said he joined the fire company because he liked putting out fires. “I was already chasing the fire trucks anyway, so I figured I should drive one,” said Hendrickson. Hendrickson, 76, is now retired from active fire fighting but is a lifetime member of the company and also serves as a commissioner. One of Hendrickson’s favorite memories was during the summer of 1969 when the Woodstock festival came into town. Hendrickson was fire chief at that time. Waking up one morning, he found the front lawn of his house filled with tents and people waiting for the festival to start. “I knew they were coming,” said Hendrickson. “I just didn’t know they were coming to my place.” Having to leave his house, Hendrickson said he sought out the biggest man he could find and told him that he will leave his home open so they can use the facilities and drink water. Hendrickson told the man before he left, nothing can go missing or become dirty or else, “I’m going to

shoot you.” Hendrickson said he returned home to find the place just the way he left it, maybe even a little cleaner. “We had about 90,000 people come to the firehouse and drink out of the garden hose we left out for them,” said Hendrickson. “We brought them baloney and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches [to the field at Woodstock] and even the old Model A tanker that was full of water,” said Hendrickson. Nothing like that happened in 2019 for the 50th anniversary weekend according to First Chief Brendon Cunningham. “Not one call came in,” said Brendon. Hendrickson’s grandchildren, 2nd Assistant Chief Shane Cunningham, 34, 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Cunningham, 32, Fire Chief Josh Cunningham, 30, and 1st Assistant Chief Brendon Cunningham, 30, all followed the family tradition and joined the fire company. Since they were children, the Cunninghams were always around the White Lake Fire Company.

Brendon said, along with their great grandmother Ruth Hendrickson, they would attend bingo night at the firehouse and help out in the kitchen. “One of our first jobs growing up was cleaning the firehouse every Saturday,” said Brendon. Being at the firehouse was just the natural place to be said Shane. “It’s a chance to be with the family more often, everybody is here. “I moved in with my great-grandmother, just so I can be closer to the station. She would drive me to drills until I was old enough to drive myself,” said Shane. Shane in 2017 was honored with the “Firefighter of the Year” award by the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters Association. That fire is one of the hottest the Cunninghams ever faced. In 2017, the White Lake Company responded to a fire with possible entrapment. Despite some confusion at the scene on whether or not there was someone trapped inside, Brendon thought quickly on his feet and consulted with the landlord of the burning building to

find the best access point. “I yelled at Shane to pack it up,” said Brendon. They grabbed the ladder and placed it where the landlord said would be the best place to reach the trapped man. Shane, along with Monticello’s then Fire Chief A.J. Washington Jr., ran up the ladder, made their way inside and found the man and rescued him. “It was like a maze inside,” said Shane. The Cunninghams grew up on the family farm near White Lake. Besides spending time at the firehouse, they worked odd jobs during the summer when they weren’t at the White Lake beach. “Being in the fire company, it definitely opens you up. In school, I was voted as the quietest,” said Brendon. Brendon said being at the fire company, they have been able to foster relationships with not only the community but neighboring fire companies. “We have a softball league, go to a lot of meetings and parades. We won a lot of awards for the parades,” said Brendon. Five years ago, Brendon during the Sullivan County Firemen’s Parade in

Liberty proposed to his now-wife, Brittany. Family is what brought the Cunninghams to the fire company, and their own families at home are what keeps them going. Nights, weekends and on holidays the White Lake Fire Company is always on call. “We can’t forget..what makes it easy for us is our family at home. They understand what we do,” said Brendon. For Brendon, this rings ever so true as his wife, Brittany, comes from a firefighter family herself. Her father, Michael Hoyt, was the past Fire Chief at the Rock Fill Fire Department. “She grew up around that, him always running out [to an emergency situation]. She knows if the pager goes off, I’m leaving,” said Brendon. Being at the firehouse, according to Jeremy, has kept them in Bethel and working in the county. “We all bought homes here in Bethel,” said Jeremy. Fighting fires is not the only thing the Cunningham boys do, all of them work full-time jobs. Shane works for the Sheriff’s Office Jail Division. Josh and Jeremy work as

grounds crew for Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. And Brendon works with his father, Patrick Cunningham, at the Bethel Highway Department. During Hurricane Sandy, Brendon recalled how the firehouse was open for eight days straight. “We were handing out dry ice and water,” said Brendon. Brendon was invited along with other fighters to the Governor’s State of the State afterward. With the victories comes the tragedy the Cunninghams said. Some stay with you for a long time, they understand its part of the job. One of Brendon’s saddest moments came recently when he assisted in saving a drowning two-year-old boy, the same age as Brendon’s son Owen. At the time, they didn’t know whether or not the child would survive but carrying the child’s body to get help, Brendon could not help but think of his own child. That night Brendon went home and cried. “I cried like a little baby,” said Brendon. “We are all busy with our lives, multiple jobs, and outside work commitments,” said Brendon. “But when that call comes in...you drop everything and answer the call.”

Damascus Ambulance Corps marks 50 years of service J

oe Davis Sr. says the Damascus Volunteer Ambulance Corps is blessed to have a community that supports them. As the president of the corps, Davis oversees the organization that has reached its 50th anniversary this year. The volunteer group got its start when a group of concerned citizens realized they didn’t have an ambulance corps. Before it got started, citizens would call the local funeral director when there was an emergency.

The funeral director would change the hearse to an ambulance and go pick people up. But he announced he was going out of business and selling the hearse. So the group of concerned citizens formed the ambulance corps and bought a used Cadillac that they would keep at a local garage. Whenever they had to go out on a call, the garage owner would have to open the garage for them. This proved to be a challenge, and fortunately for them Thomas and Lucille Griffith donated a piece of land. Local construction workers, masons, carpenters and excavators

got together and built a building on the donated land. And that building is still the Damascus Volunteer Ambulance Corps today. Davis points out that the building had to be lifted a few feet, as the old ambulances were small and the new ones got taller. “So it started 50 years ago—just concerned citizens concerned about their neighbors, and it’s still going today,� Davis remarked. The corps has about seven EMT’s and five EMR’s and operates 24 CONTINUED ON PAGE 23F

hours a day seven days a week. It covers all or parts of the townships of Damascus, Manchester, Buckingham and Lebanon. They also are on-call for the surrounding area, such as Honesdale and Lake Como as well as the Sullivan County side. The members are all volunteers, and the corps provides and pays for training. They only ask that members stay for at least one year. “Volunteerism is tough,� Davis said. “We’re blessed to have some really good people, but we need more, we desperately need volunteers.� If anyone is interested in joining, they can go to their monthly meeting on the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the ambulance building, located at 1290 Cochecton Turnpike, Tyler Hill, PA. “It’s very gratifying, it really is,� Davis said about volunteering. “We go out and help people. A lot of our calls aren’t life and death; a lot of them are medicals and elderly people. But we do have our serious issues too, the last few years we’ve been faced with the drug epidemic.� He said that in one week one of the ambulance corps members resuscitated two people who had overdosed and brought them back to life. It just goes to show if it were not for a group of citizens forming the

ambulance corps five decades ago, and for the group of volunteers who keep it going today, lives could have been lost. The ambulance corps celebrated the 50th anniversary with a takeout chicken BBQ recently, held at the ambulance building on a Saturday afternoon. By the time it started at 1 p.m. there was already a line of cars waiting to pick up their food. “We’re blessed,� Davis said. “The community supports us.�

he line-up will take place on Rock Hill Drive and in the Crystal Run parking lot on Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m., and the parade will step off at 2 p.m. There will be ample signs to direct you to where you have to be. The truck judging will take place at the former Frontier Insurance building parking lot. Registration and judging will commence at 9:00 a.m., and will continue until 11:30 a.m.

Refreshments, music and entertainment for the kids will be at the firehouse at the end of the march. Hot dogs and cold drinks are free to all marchers. illions of people visit the Vietnam Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. Many veterans who want to honor and visit the wall for their fallen comrades in D.C. might not have the means to make the trip. After much research and planning, the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition will bring a version of that heartfelt wall in D.C. to Rock Hill. There are 58,318 names, as of Memorial Day 2017, listed on the memorial wall in D.C. Names are still being added as veterans pass away from their war-time injuries. Starting on September 11 at noon, a replica of the Vietnam Memorial wall will call the outfield at the Rock Hill Fire Department’s Pavilion and Baseball Field home for five days.

There will be an opening ceremony on September 11 at 7 p.m. that will bring together local emergency first responders and veterans to Rock Hill. On that evening, Sullivan County Veterans will lay down reefs amongst the memorial wall to honor those who lost their lives and are still missing from action. The memorial wall will open to the public for 24 hours a day, for the five days it is here. Soon after, the ceremony will turn its thoughts to honoring those who lost their lives on 9/11. That portion of the event will be coordinated between the Rock Hill, Monticello and Wurtsboro Fire Departments. Information booths will be on-site in order to provide, information, history, and context of the Vietnam War and the wall.

It will travel through Woodbourne to connect with State Route 42 South. The AVTT will go through Fallsburg and Kiamesha as it makes its way into Monticello. The AVTT will then go on to Route

After getting off the exit, they will make a right at the traffic light and then another right onto Jefferson Street. The AVTT will travel until it reaches Broadway and will make a left onto Broadway. It will travel down Broadway and East Broadway until the roundabout to re-enter Route 17 South. The AVTT will travel on the quick way until Exit 109, and once there, it will make a left, and it will make its way until it reaches its final destination, the Rock Hill Fire Department’s Pavilion and Baseball Field. The total trip is 19 miles. If you go The Traveling Vietnam Wall is open to visitors 24 hours a day from September 11 afternoon - September 15 before noon at the Rock Hill Fire Department Pavilion and Baseball Field located at 61 Glen Wild Road. Admission is free.

There will be a computer on-site so that visitors can find the name of a loved one on the wall. Once the name is found on the computer, it will direct them to the panel where it is located. The wall that will be at Rock Hill was created by the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT), a Texasbased company that is veteranowned. The replica is 360 feet long and stands eight feet tall at its center, an 80 percent scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in D.C.
