We have also placed automatic external defibrillators (AED) with several of EMTs spread throughout the district. Calls for 2014: The corps averages 200 calls per year. Scope and challenges: “Our district covers all or parts of the Towns of Delaware, Callicoon, Fremont, and Hancock,” said Captain Diana Duffy. “While 2014 brought several challenging calls, one of the most challenging aspects for our members is the fact that we are caring for our friends, neighbors and family members. Whether it is a laceration, a motor vehicle accident or a cardiac arrest, we are caring for our community and the people we know. In doing so we don't just finish the call at the hospital but will be interacting with all involved long after the call is done.” Awards for 2014: Best Appearing Ambulance Corps at Hortonville Field Day. Diana Duffy, Dawn Buchanan, Connor Duffy, Ashley Buchanan, Sam Avrett, Norman Bauer and Brittany Reddish all have been EMTs for five or more years and newest EMT Cody Buchanan just passed his exam this week. In addition to the EMTs there are 15 other members that assist the agency either by driving, assisting

with calls or office staff. It is a team effort. “We are all volunteers. One of the continuing challenges, not only to our agency but to the EMS system as a whole, is the need for volunteers to answer the call to the community. We are always looking for new members. We encourage people to join their local squads.” — Diana Duffy

iddletown Medical, the Hudson Valley’s premier provider of healthcare services, is now providing a “reservation service” for its Urgent Care Centers in Middletown and Chester. Available seven days a week at both Urgent Care Centers, patients can simply phone the location they want to go to and can “Reserve a Spot” by pre-registering. Once they arrive, they will then be the next person taken (although in case of emergency, they’ll be seen immediately).

“We know everyone’s time is valuable, and this allows patients to save time,” said Lori Marl, Operations Director. “It’s just another service we’re adding to better assist with the busy lifestyles of our patients.” Both Urgent Care Centers are open seven days a week and offer: • Treatment of non-emergency illness and injury. • Walk-in X-ray services • Splints and sutures

Middletown Medical was the first in the area to offer immediate medical care, and ensures personalized emergency care, thanks to an award-winning staff of physicians. The Middletown location is at 111 Maltese Drive, and the phone is 342-4774, while the new Chester Center is located in the Chester ShopRite Plaza, and can be reached by calling 469-2692. Your best option for extended hour care:

Crystal Run Urgent Care much more affordable price than that of a hospital emergency room. “Urgent Care is not intended for someone who is having chest pain and suspects they are having a heart attack,” urges Margaret Coughlin, MD, a Family Medicine physician at Crystal Run Urgent Care. “In that situation it is better to call 911 and get yourself to an emergency room. Urgent Care is more for individuals that have experienced minor emergencies and injuries that are non-life threatening but still cannot wait for their next doctor’s appointment.” Dr. Coughlin added: “We see lots of patients with cold and flu-related symptoms like sore throats, coughs, headaches and stomach aches in the winter months as wells as people that slip and fall on ice and have mechanical injuries such as a sprain or strain. As the weather warms up

we see more injuries from outdoor activities like insect bites, allergic reactions, burns as well as cuts and bruises.”

Not all Urgent Care is created equal Many Urgent Cares are staffed almost exclusively with physician assistants and nurse practitioners. What sets Crystal Run Urgent Care apart from others is that it is staffed with trained Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine physicians at all times, in addition to certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants. In fact, having a physician available on site at all times is one of the many criteria that Crystal Run has met in order to be the only private practice Urgent Care in the region to be both accredited by the Joint Commission and a Certified Urgent Care Center as

PN remains committed to founders’ vision of personal service

Family firm celebrates 55 years in business Later in the sixties, the Kaufmans moved to Monticello where Norman’s brother, David, had established a career in public service. Eventually, David became supervisor of the Town of Thompson. Norman’s son Steven L. (currently the president) and David’s son Steven

Jared Kaufman and his cousin, Steven B. Kaufman are third and second generation respectively of the Kaufman family involved in the business.

B. (vice president) were the second generation to join the business, and Steven L.’s son Jared is part of the sales/service crew. Steven L.’s wife Lois is also involved. Fifty-five years later those simple alarms have evolved into elaborate and remotely-operated security and alarm systems. What Norman could not have foreseen were how… … you can control almost any aspect of your home through an app on your smart phone. … you can lock your front door and turn off the oven from your phone while you’re sitting at work. … CCTV systems and motion sensors allowing your phone to stream live video of your front door and alerting

15630

MONTICELLO — The year was 1960. Norman Kaufman was visiting a friend’s house in Brooklyn when a salesman rang the bell and offered to show them what he claimed to be the newest and greatest development in home alarm systems. “This gentleman comes in with a fog machine [to simulate smoke] and says ‘Do you want your family to die in a fire?’ ” Jared Kaufman, Norman’s grandson, related recently at PN Alarm in Monticello. The salesman was shown the door, but Norman had had a brainstorm. Kaufman told his friend he could install an alarm himself. Norman and wife Phyllis went to a hardware store and bought equipment for their aspiring enterprise, which they had named “PN Alarm.” Phyllis and Norman literally started the business out of their station wagon, selling systems to neighbors, and the firm grew by word of mouth.

you if someone comes by while you’re not home. PN has thousands of clients from “Lake George to New York City,” according to Jared, including many residents here in Sullivan County. Jared has been working at PN full time since 2000. “My best experience on the job was working with my grandfather, Norman,” said Jared. “I was standing in a room with the walls gutted out and just thinking to myself ‘How am I going to do all this?’, then my grandfather just walks in and says ‘Let’s work.’ ” “We provide any and all services,” said Senior Vice President Steven B. Kaufman, who claimed PN could match “any [better-known] company in the country.” Those products include personal emergency response systems (PERS) that allow seniors to call for help in the event of an emergency. But these are slightly different from just any PERS you see advertised on TV. PN’s PERS contain a GPS system that allows emergency responders to ping the exact location of the person who needs help. “The best experience is the one I haven’t had yet,” concluded Steven B. “I love to come in here every day to design and engineer things that I know will help people in this community.” PN Fire & Burglar Alarm is located at 31 North St. in Monticello (7946133) and also in Middletown (3437600). Call toll-free 1-800-PNALARM (762-5276). For complete list of services visit http://pnalarm.com.

What PN Alarm offers… RESIDENTIAL SECURITY SYSTEMS Custom designed, from simple to elaborate, and linked to Central Station to provide police response. Hardwired or wireless smoke sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and propane sensors work alone or in combination. Central Station can identify the difference between the three. COMMERCIAL SECURITY SYSTEMS Specialized in designing and installing commercial security systems. Control panels can be programmed to operate security sensors in buildings from a few hundred square feet to over 10,000 sq. ft. In warehouses or garages, commercial motion sensors can eliminate false alarms from animals that might enter the building, such as birds. Built-in time clocks and schedules can tell Central Station things such as what time the alarm was turned on/off, which employee is arming/disarming the security systems and detect employees entering after hours. Programmable control panels can alarm different portions of a warehouse. ”Hold-up” switches can be installed by a desk or behind a counter, giving you peace of mind when the main alarm is disarmed. COMMERCIAL FIRE ALERT SYSTEMS Upon activation the system can recall elevators, release electronic door controls, shut down HVAC systems and alert occupants in building. Fire panel can interface with the sprinkler system to alert Central Station on sprinkler activation, valve closure and low pressure on dry systems. ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING A pipe freeze up from a faulty furnace or power failure can cause major damage in a home or business. PN Alarm has developed a loss of heat system that is easily installed and inexpensive. Thermostats are placed in your home or business and when the furnace shuts off and the temperature starts to drop the Central Station will receive a low temperature signal causing operator to dispatch your fuel company or heating contractor. – See complete info at pnalarm.com

According to a press release: “As a designated Stroke Center, Catskill Regional has an expert Stroke Team comprised of highly trained physicians, nurses and technicians that can treat stroke quickly and effectively, using the latest medicines and techniques, to minimize brain damage. Having quick access to these types of services within the first three hours of showing symptoms of a stroke is essential to preventing longterm neurological damage.” This means stroke victims will be transported directly to the Harris campus instead of having to go all the way to Middletown, where the

other nearby stroke center, Orange Regional Medical Center, is located. The two hospitals are part of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System. “Time is critical when it comes to a stroke,” said Dr. Carlos Holden, CRMC’s medical director of Emergency Medicine. He noted that there’s usually a very small window of time for someone to seek medical attention after a stroke has struck. That deadline is often less than three hours. “After that the brain begins to die,” said Dr. Holden. A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or blood vessel and severs the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. “What happens is that the brain is basically suffocating,” said Holden. He added: “We want to remind area residents to call 911 immediately if they begin to experience symptoms of a stroke – sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body;

sudden confusion; trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and/or sudden, severe headache with no known cause.” And since every minute counts, medical providers need to use modern technology to solve problems of distance. CRMC’s Harris and Callicoon Campuses can consult stroke specialists through the use of “Doctor Polly,” a state-of-the-art technology used to help diagnose stroke and other illnesses by remote consultation. “Dr. Polly” – aka the Polycom RealPresence Practitioner Cart – allows doctors to assess a patient’s symptoms over a computer screen in real time. Dr. Polly represents a simple, mobile workstation situated at the head of a table or in an exam room. It assists doctors and nurses in overcoming the restraints of time and distance so they can diagnose patients wherever they may be. “Dr. Polly is a great colleague,” said Dr. Holden. “You can see the patient in front of you and ask them to

describe their symptoms as if they were right in the room at that moment.” CRMC’s designation as a Stroke Center, as well as new technology such as “Dr. Polly” represent the newest and most advanced methods of treating stroke cases, but Dr. Holden stresses that prevention is still the best treatment. It all comes down to managing one’s risk factors such as high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation and physical inactivity and taking greater responsibility for one’s own well-being. “This designation signifies our ability to rapidly assess our patients and get them the treatment they need, states Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer Gerard Galarneau, MD. “Now, people who show signs of a stroke can be cared for right in their own community, receiving quality stroke care and minimizing the affects that a stroke can cause. ” For information about our Stroke Services at Catskill Regional Medical Center, call 794-3300 or visit www.crmcny.org/strokecenter.

Flooding dangers: What you should know If there is one thing we’ve learned since the 2000s is that Sullivan County is prone to repeated flooding. We’ve experienced major floods in which lives have been lost and property damage has run into the millions. With milder temperatures approaching, New Yorkers are urged to learn about flood dangers and sign up for NY Alerts. Governor Andrew Cuomo declared the week of March 16 as Flood Safety Preparedness Week, and with that in mind we offer this summary of flood safety tips.

W

Roadways can wash away quickly – and become very dangerous – during flash floods like the one last July 4th weekend.

ith milder temperatures approaching in the coming weeks, communities may experience heavy flooding. Though Flood Safety Preparedness Week has passed, residents should take a simple preparedness step each day or to set a daily goal to prepare for a severe weather event.

Sign up for NY Alerts at https://users.nyalert.gov to get immediate alerts on flood warnings and severe storms. Taking the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps training is one way to prepare for any emergency or disaster. The Corps gives residents the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. Visit www.prepare.ny.gov for a list of current in-person trainings happening across the state. New Yorkers can also visit this website to take a condensed version of the training online.

the hazards of walking or driving a vehicle through flood waters. “Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard,” noted a report from the NWS. “The Centers for Disease Control report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. Most flood-related deaths and injuries could be avoided if people who come upon areas covered with water followed this simple advice: Turn Around Don't Drown.”

Before, after and during a flood BEFORE A FLOOD • Know your Risk: Is your home, business or school in a floodplain? Where is water likely to collect on the roadways you most often travel? What is the fastest way to get to higher ground? Knowing the answers to these questions ahead of time can save your life. • Communications Plan: It is important to be able to communicate with your family and friends in the event of a disaster. Whether it is having a specific person identified to contact for status updates or a safe location to meet up with family members, having a plan in place will give you peace of mind if disaster does strike. • Stay Informed: The National Weather Service’s Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service provides RSS feeds for observed forecast and alert river conditions to help keep the public informed about local water conditions. • Develop and practice a 'family escape' plan and identify a meeting place if family members become separated. • Have a professional install check-valves in plumbing to prevent flood waters from backing up into the drains of your home. Make sure your sump pump is working and consider having a backup. Make sure your electric circuit breakers, or fuses, are clearly marked for each area of your home. • Make an itemized list – as well as potentially photo and video documentation – of all valuables including furnishings, clothing and other personal property. Keep the list in a safe place. • Stockpile emergency supplies of canned food, medicine and first aid supplies and drinking water. Store drinking water in clean, closed containers. • Plan what to do with your pets. • Have a portable radio, flashlights, extra batteries and emergency cooking equipment available. • Keep your automobile fueled. If electric power is cut off, gasoline stations may not be able to pump fuel for several days. Have a small disaster supply kit in the trunk of your car. • Find out how many feet your property is above and below possible flood levels. When predicted flood levels are broadcast, you can determine if you may be flooded. • Keep materials like sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and lumber handy for emergency water-proofing. • Check on your insurance coverage. Homeowners’ insurance policies generally do not cover flood damages. Only flood insurance can protect your home against flood damages. You can purchase flood insurance whether or not you live in a mapped flood zone.

DURING A FLOOD • Stay Informed: Monitor local radio and television (including NOAA Weather Radio), internet and social media for information and updates. • Get to Higher Ground: Get out of areas subject to flooding and get to higher ground immediately. • Obey Evacuation Orders: If told to evacuate, do so immediately. Be sure to lock your home as you leave. If you have time, disconnect utilities and appliances. • Electric Safety: Don't go into a basement, or any room, if water covers the electrical outlets or if cords are submerged. If you see sparks or hear buzzing, crackling, snapping or popping noises --get out! Stay out of water that may have electricity in it! • Avoid Flood Waters: Do not walk through flood waters. It only takes six inches of moving water to knock you off your feet. If you are trapped by moving water, move to the highest possible point and call 911 for help. • Do not drive into flooded roadways or around a barricade; Turn Around, Don't Drown! Water may be deeper than it appears and can hide many hazards (i.e. sharp objects, washed out road surfaces, electrical wires, chemicals, etc). A vehicle caught in swiftly moving water can be swept away in a matter of seconds. Twelve inches of water can float a car or small SUV and 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles.

AFTER A FLOOD Wait for the “All Clear”: Do not enter a flood damaged home or building until you're given the all clear by authorities. If you choose to enter a flood damaged building, be extremely careful. Water can compromise the structural integrity and its foundation. Make sure the electrical system has been turned off, otherwise contact the power company or a qualified electrician. Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible to discuss the damage done to your property. If you have a home generator, be sure to follow proper safety procedures for use. You can find generator safety information at: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/co/generator.shtm Heed Road Closed and Cautionary Signs: Road closure and other cautionary signs are put in place for your safety. Pay attention to them!

It is important to follow all instructions during a flood emergency.

the 2002 Ford. It also owns a 2006 Ford. In regards to special equipment: The new 2014 is equipped with five-point harnesses for increased safety for rear passengers. Involvement: Corps participates in several community events throughout the year including Callicoon Tractor Parade, Youth Center 5K run

and Red Dogs football season.
