Diehl Homestead Farm welcomes Farmstock visitors STORY AND PHOTOS BY ANYA TIKKA

A

visit to the Diehl Homestead Farm during a Farmstock event opens one’s eyes about what it takes to keep a farm running and earning a living in this ancient calling. The entire Diehl family works in the farm that dates back to at least 1842 and “probably earlier,” according to Alice Diehl, whose husband Peter now works mainly with the beehives. Their son Adam is married to Annette, and he looks after the dairy production. The couple’s kids also help around the farm. In addition, Annette makes maple cotton candy, delicious maple cream that’s maple syrup reduced to creamy consistency, and maple sugar. The whole family pitches in into the running of the multi-faceted farm, and the cozy saphouse kitchen also serves as a direct outlet store for the pretty bottled honey and maple products. Farmstock day saw a steady stream of visitors, many of whom were at the farmstead for the first time. “Most people come back,” recounted Alice with a smile while seeing to the visitors on the Farmstock day, selling the products, and preparing cheese in a large pan. The cheese was

for her family’s consumption, although “We’ve talked about making more cheese and butter” for selling. “We started Farmstock as a way to educate people about where their food came from,” Alice explained about the program. It began in 2010 as part of the Sullivan County Food Network. Visitors also got to see what goes into producing the delicious, fragrant, real maple syrup we all love to pour over pancakes. Edward Loughrey, a neighbor who helps out in the maple production end at the farm, noted, “It takes about 40 to 50 gallons of sap to get a gallon of syrup.” Getting the maple trees ready for the season starts early in late January or February with wading through snow to check the lines that will bring the sap to the collection containers that then get taken to the sap house for processing. Diehl Farm taps about 2,500 trees in a season. In addition it offers raw natural honey from over 15 bee hives, and produces milk from a 50-strong PLEASE SEE DIEHL HOMESTEAD FARMS, 4R

The farm’s roots reach back much further into history. “There was a log cabin here in 1842… although it probably goes back much further,” Alice stated.

ing that they have thought about expanding the maple production, for which there’s much demand in the metro area. All that Diehl Homestead Farm produces is pure and natural, from the raw honey straight from the hives, to the sap from maples that grow on the farm’s 50 plus acres, to the milk from cows that munch on grass and feed that is all natural grain. In addition, the consumer can visit the farm and see how everything’s produced. Edward and Pete described in more detail how the syrup is made. dairy cow herd. The milk from the dairy herd goes to New Jersey markets, Alice explained. Milk prices are strictly regulated in the United States, and consequently dairy farmers across the country find it very hard to make ends meet. Alice said the Diehls are part of the National Dairy

Organization that connects thousands of farmers across the country to talk about their issues to try to work on the prices and regulations for profitability. Alice noted that the maple syrup and honey sales help a lot in keeping Annette and Adam’s young family going, despite of the milk pricing. “At the moment, we sell everything we can produce,” she continued, say-

Laura Szymczak came from New Brunswick, NJ with her son, Ted, and his friend, Ryan Newell, both 9 years old. “I already have the maple cream,” she stated, adding she uses it for filling the handmade chocolates she makes. “It’s great.” She’s been coming back many times. Ted and Ryan didn’t say much because their mouths were full of maple cream and they were grinning from ear to ear.

Maple Tour highlights ‘growth industry’ STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRED STABBERT III

ast week’s New York State Maple Tour wound its way across northern Sullivan and western Ulster counties as 132 registrants got a first-hand glimpse into what our local maple syrup producers are doing to get better. Two busloads of suppliers, producers, researchers and retailers enjoyed what they saw as they spent last Monday and Tuesday learning about the local maple industry. “This is really impressive,” said Mike Farrell, a member of the Maple Research Center at Cornell University in Ithaca. “It’s incredible. “New York state is the best place in the world to make syrup,” he said. “The trees are very healthy, we have the best markets and easy access to many trees. “They have everything going for

them,” Farrell said. “This tour shows what should be happening in the Catskills. Maple syrup production is the fastest growing agricultural industry. “There is incredible growth and last year was one of the biggest maple syrup crops in history,” he said. Participating in the tour were: • Catskill Mtn. Sugar House operated by John Garigliano, in Grahamsville; • Justus Asthalter Maple Farm operated by Dawn and Sean Boyes in Parksville; • Muthig Farm operated by Ray and Dot Muthig in Parksville; • Thunder Hill Sugar Shack operated by the Mickelson family in Grahamsville; and • Frost Valley in Claryville. The tour also stopped at the Time & The Valleys Museum in Grahamsville. Stephanie Caccamo and her husband Steve came down from East

Syracuse to join the two-day tour. “It’s so interesting, every saphouse is different,” she said. The couple owns Next Generation Maple Products, a full service maple syrup equipment provider. Also on tour was Keith and Jennifer Moore from Louisa, Kentucky. “Last year we produced 52 bottles of syrup,” Keith said in his southern drawl. “We are pretty proud of that.” Conversely, the sugarhouse they were visiting, Catskill Mtn. Sugar House, produced 10,000 gallons, as they tapped a record 38,000 trees. The Moores learned about the New York Maple Tour through Maple News and “wanted to learn more production.” They certainly did. The tours included an in-depth look inside each sugarhouse with each maple farmer detailing what makes their facility unique. Glenn Goodrich from Cabot, Vermont was truly impressed.

“My family started maple syrup farming in the 1800s in Cabot,” Goodrich, the seventh generation of his family to be in the business, said, “This is an excellent tour. The Gariglianos have done an excellent job here. “They have a state-of-the-art operation,” he said. Coming from a farmer with 50,000 taps over a 45-mile radius it was indeed high praise. Goodrich, like many farmers in the industry, is only too happy to help his fellow maple syrup producers. “I invented the device on top of the evaporator which boosts efficiency,” Goodrich said. Also on hand to promote local products was Tara Luty of Roscoe Beer Company and April Hodge of Catskill Distillery in Bethel. Both were handing out free samples, which the tour members seemed to enjoy.

But perhaps the event’s biggest development was the announcement by Fred Bach – nephew to former CCE Director Earl Wilde – of a $50,000 endowment named for his late uncle and his wife, Elizabeth. The news got even better for CCE supporters when it was additionally announced that a yet-to-be-named donor would be matching Bach’s generous gift. quality programs and staff have set generations of local families on a decidedly agricultural path. Families like the Kaplans of K-Brand Farm (a.k.a.Egg U) fame. Or the Myerses, who’ve been farming in Sullivan County for nearly 200 years. With the Extension’s future a major topic at the “early centennialâ€? event, on hand was a part of CCE’s past and present, Earl Myers, who’s upheld his family’s 170-year farming tradition. “A major part of my farm has been involved in some way with Cornell Cooperative Extension‌ I want to see the next generation enjoy the same,â€? Myers said. Also present to kick off CCE’s centennial was Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther. State Senator John Bonacic sent representative Linda Cellini to the festivities, which featured food by Natural Contents, live music, and a raft of speakers that included Legislative Chairman Scott Samuelson and Sullivan County Historian John Conway. With the backdrop of a tough economy, CCE seems to be rebounding and announced several new initiatives, the first of which was the Extension’s plan to allocate five of

or the first time ever last Friday and Saturday, Maplehorst Farms in Monticello hosted the annual summer meeting of the New York State Christmas Tree Growers Association. The Christmas tree nursery – which had been operating since the late 1920s – attracted more than 200 industry folk for daylong tours of the sprawling facility, which includes more than 30 acres of all variety of fir trees and saplings. “They came from all over the area, and as far as Massachusetts, Vermont and Maryland,” offered fourth generation grower and coowner Karen Rapp. “They came to learn about our farm and how we operate here. We even got to show off the Christmas Shop we opened back in 2004.”

“They came from all over the area, and as far as Massachusetts, Vermont and Maryland . . .” A contingent from Cornell Cooperative Extension was on hand for the two-day event, hosting a seminar on integrated pear management. According to third generation grower John Rapp, the event was quite the undertaking, taking about two years to put together. It was catered by none other than Bill Sipos and his Mr. Willy’s eatery and featured various area vendors selling tools, signs and farming equipment.

“It was a very long weekend,” offered Karen, who added, “It was our very first time hosting this event and though it was tough, it was also very gratifying.” The event was simultaneously hosted by Bell’s Christmas Tree Farm in Accord. “We split hosting the event with them [Bell’s] because that way we could hold a lot more seminars,” explained John. “We went down there [Accord] Thursday for a meet and greet type event . . . we were able to get a lot more done by cohosting with them.” Running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event also featured several industry related seminars that counted toward “pesticide credits” for licensed applicators. Pesticide licensing became a New York State requirement back in 1977. Licensed applicators and farmers are required to renew their certifications every three years. The seminars that count toward the valuable pesticide credits are closely scrutinized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and must past DEC muster – as must the instructors – before being officially accredited. “This was a pretty massive undertaking for us,” said John. “We don’t know if we’ll do it again, but as far as I’m concerned it was well worth the effort.” Maplehorst Farms Christmas Tree Nursery is a year-long operation located at 153 Rapp Road in Monticello.
