he Hughson enterprise is a little like the post office in that “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” seem to keep it from appointed tasks. Recently, for example, on an icy, slippery day with schools on a twohour delay, the Jeff Sanitation truck lumbered up hill and down dale – and, in fact, ran a bit off the road when it got up to Hankins. “When that happens, we go back with a pick-up truck and get the trash,” said Diane Hughson, Jeff Sanitation’s president and bookkeeper.

community. With Stickel as teacher, Jamie began driving trucks at age 16 and she can handle anything from a tractor-trailer to the “roll-offs” – the big dumpsters that roll on rails in and out of the trucks. She can routinely be found behind the wheel of the Jeff Sanitation recycling truck and goes out on garbage runs too. For J. Hughson Excavating, Jamie’s often at demolition sites where buildings come down but their salvageable insides get sold. “My dad just sold a claw-foot bathtub on eBay,” she noted. Jim himself is out of the office most days, working on estimates for building demolitions or pond dredging, or checking on how jobs are going. Back at the Route 52 headquarters, Hughson Excavating staffer Cindy Robertson handles the secretarial work and bookkeeping.
‘Family? You can depend on them, for sure...’ – Jim Hughson For Jeff Sanitation, Diane’s at the helm, working on payroll and paperwork and fielding phone calls from residences or businesses on the roster of 900 accounts. Diane also mans a pick-up truck as well, hauling residential trash on Swiss Hill Road and in Kenoza Lake. The Hughsons say they value the uniqueness of the family business. “Family? You can depend on them, for sure,” said Jim. “Everything’s straightforward. You know where you stand.” “I like working here,” Jamie added. “You have to care. It all reflects on you.” Contact the Hughsons at 4820926.

hances are you’ve thoroughly enjoyed the fruits (and vegetables, and tacos, and fettucini alfredo) of Anna and John Valerio’s hard work and experience. The sister and brother – and their extended family – have made meals memorable throughout northeastern Pennsylvania and the upper Delaware River valley. “I’ve been working in the business since I was young,” John affirmed. So has Anna, and while both siblings pursued other professional interests, they each eventually returned to the business of food – John running the immensely popular Two Guys From Italy restaurant, Anna and husband Lalo Martinez opening

the growing, well-liked Fiesta on Main, both in Honesdale, Pa.
“I’m from Honesdale, and my husband is from Mexico City,” Anna
explained, adding that they met in Baltimore but decided the best place to raise their son Leo, now 8, was in Anna’s hometown. “We did have this idea to open a restaurant here,” Lalo remembered, “but Anna wasn’t sure if the town was ready for a Mexican restaurant.” “They were,” she added with a smile. That was four years ago, and Fiesta on Main remains the only Mexican restaurant in the region. Two Guys From Italy has a bit more competition from the bevy of Italian eateries in the area, but John and his staff have kept standards high and prices low, making Two Guys a destination unto itself. “I’m the owner/operator,” he said. “I do everything, but I’m not ever there to do anything specific.” That help-wherever-needed attiPLEASE SEE VALERIO, PAGE 6F

tude defines both siblings, who manage their respective establishments but can throw on an apron and cook when the need calls. “When you open the door, you have to expect the unexpected,” noted Anna, who shares duties with Lalo (they co-own Fiesta). There’s no sibling rivalry since John and Anna operate separate
restaurants, but Anna and Lalo cannot escape the fact that they’re married and in business together – a potential recipe for high tension. “We work it out, always,” Lalo assured. In fact, the two of them work so well together – and share the same passion – that they’re planning to open another food-related business in the future (sorry – no sneak peeks yet!).

For now, they’re enjoying the success that comes from authentic Mexican cuisine in a region starved for it. “It’s not just a way to make money,” Anna explained. “It’s also a lifestyle.” It’s a lifestyle they crave as much as customers do their food. “The nice part of being the owner
of anything is that you do have a level of freedom at your discretion – not having to answer to anybody,” Anna said. “Being my own boss,” seconded John. “While you have a lot of things to do, you have a lot of flexibility in how things get done.” “Though vacations are a little more challenging,” laughed Anna.
She and Lalo oversee a staff of 10, while John has around 20 working at Two Guys. Fiesta can seat upwards of 40 people, while Two Guys has capacity for 150 at a time. It’s hard work, to be sure, but that’s in their blood. “I have to say I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have a skill that people don’t generally have,” affirmed Anna. “It’s a comfort zone,” added John. And that translates into making guests comfortable. “We’re very thankful for our loyal customers,” said Lalo. *** Two Guys From Italy is located at the Route 6 Plaza in Honesdale and can be reached at 570-253-2612 and at twoguyshonesdale.com Fiesta on Main is located at 1139 Main Street in Honesdale and can be reached at 570-352-3700. The Villa Roma Salutes every “All in the Family” business on their great accomplishments Our ‘All in the Family’ History of theVilla Roma Almost 60 years ago, the Villa Roma was owned by a man named Ernesto Vindigni. The resort was no larger than a quaint boarding house with 46 hotel rooms, 10 cottages, a pool and two bocce courts. Days began with home-cooked meals and were spent relaxing with a swim or a game of bocce. However, that was before Marty Passante came along… While bow hunting in October of 1969, Mr. Martin Passante came across the Villa Roma and noticed the “for sale” sign. After much consideration, Marty convinced his two friends, Albert Aprea and Danny Vaccaro, to partner with him on the purchase of the resort property. They sold everything they owned on Long Island, NY and moved upstate to the small country town of Callicoon. The sale became final in December of 1969, and after a couple of years, Marty became the sole owner and the Villa Roma has never been the same since!
25604
By 1973 Marty’s dream was becoming a reality; they began constructing the Lobby and the Futura wing, keeping the hotel seasonal until 1977. Construction of more rooms began along with the Club Forum, which would accommodate 800 guests. While all of this was going on, Marty was busy coordinating marketing strategies that would bring guests to the resort all year long. Villa Roma kept growing. Before long, there was racquetball courts, the Ernesto (named after the original owner), and the Indoor Sports Complex in 1982. In 1983, Villa Roma built the ski area, followed by our 18-hole PGA golf course and timeshare units. The timeshares allowed for returning guests to purchase a unit for one or multiple week(s) a year, for a lease term of 99 years—this idea was brilliant! It raised money for new construction and put Villa Roma onto the map.

‘Treating your family as we treat our own’ The Perito Family Colonial-Bryant Funeral Homes STORY AND PHOTO BY ALLISON RUEF
O
f all the things in life that make people uncomfortable, death is probably at the top of many lists. It is a sad and painful experience – certainly not something most would choose to deal with every day. Fortunately, we have exerts who help us deal with the loss of a loved one and help us say our goodbyes. Anthony Perito, the owner of Colonial-Bryant Funeral Homes and Cremation Services has been this helping hand in our community since 1997. Joining him now is his fiance Linda Alonso, a Monticello native and licensed funeral director who has worked with Perito since 2007, and the next generation – his son Antonio “Tony” Perito, 23 and niece Karen Perrello, 28, also licensed funeral directors. Perito made his way to
Woodbourne via the Bronx, where he grew up. Having spent childhood summers at a small bungalow colony in Monticello, this area held fond memories for him. In 1997 he gave in to the unavoidable pull that Sullivan County has on so many of us and moved his family north. Colonial-Bryant has two locations, in Livingston Manor and Woodbourne. The funeral home on Rte. 52 in Woodbourne was Perito’s first location. The building itself is a beautiful, historic gem – built in the 1830s with a Neversink River stone foundation and 18 rooms, it is homey, comfortable, classic and clean. Perito will tell you it’s because it is his home – he and his son Tony are the only local funeral directors to still live where they work. “In the old days, communication wasn’t what it is today, so if you were the funeral director, you had to live in the funeral home. That’s just the way it was,”Perito said. Because they live where they work, what they offer is very personal. “We

After working in the industry in the state of Florida, Bill returned to his roots in Sullivan County in 1983. Since then Bill has grown his business and customer base in the area.
