A MESSAGE from the BETHEL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
t the end of last year, after many Woodstock’69 celebrations, events in all fifteen towns, and visitors young and old, we knew we were on the map again. The welcome mat had been laid and we extended ourselves, offering 50th Anniversary parades, concerts and happenings in every hamlet while service and hospitality were at their all time high. The Dove Trail, fifty artistic peace sculptures, six of which are located in Bethel, were erected throughout our entire county. The local Bethel Heritage Trail, depicting memories of ‘69, was created within our town borders. The Museum exhibits and performance season Bethel Woods Center for the Arts pulled off added to an outstanding Golden Anniversary year. The energy and excitement brought new faces, curious ‘wannabe’ homeowners and hopeful business entrepreneurs. 2019 was a good year... The Bethel Business Association was looking to capitalize on that moving in to 2020. The ‘start-ups’ and new storefront owners were gearing up while the seasoned professionals and more stable businesses were sure of their game. As always, all our members wished for a longer, stronger season, support and profit. The optics were good coming into January. Clearly, we were optimistic, ready for a great year and willing to work hard to ‘Live the Dream’. 2020 enters with so much promise however, with that comes whispers of a coronavirus. More talk arises in February and by March, we learn and adapt to a flu turned COVID-19 epidemic. Citizens should stay home. Many stores shutter, we close schools and some lucky quarantined workers rely on computers from their new bedroom offices. Technology is king. By April, our vocabulary is expanded to include PPE and medical terminology. We worry about toilet paper, disinfectants, masks and food insecurity. We social distance to the point of inability to be with our loved ones. The entire, exhausted medical community is put to the test and researchers and intelligence come together to suppress the ‘enemy’ we are now at war with. Local, state and federal governments struggle with leadership, medical advice, and the economy. This year, the local economy has been rocked by COVID. It left shuttered businesses without vision, and stranded them with no income and 6
little choice. Employees lost their jobs and some store owners simply walked away. If a business remained open, no matter what type it was, patrons weren’t leaving their homes to get through their door. Most professionals, real estate and service businesses remained above water, while restaurants and the self employed dug their heels in and had to get creative. The ‘order, pick up and delivery’ MO or curbside retail became the new business model. Recently service and other areas of business report that calls have picked up which is a good sign. As of this writing, the NYS ‘Phases of Opening’ relax one by one. The Mid Hudson was the last upstate area to do so. The business community and Bethel Business Association members have adapted to new policies and continue to do so. New sanitary and personal protocols have been instituted and are being followed. We are conscientious about our environments and the safety of our employees and patrons. You can be sure that your health and well being are of utmost importance to all of our members. We welcome your families to play in our parks, boat on our lakes, fish our rivers and hike the woodlands. You can shop our retail and antique stores and drop in to the many local artist studios and galleries. Take a drive, enjoy the scenery or stop for a bite of history. Would you really miss the farm markets, the fair or the chance to pet a cow? A casino, a water park, hotel resorts and even winter skiing are close by. Oh, and by the way, there’s a famous world-class Museum and Music and Arts Center just off 17B, aka ‘The Woodstock Way’. When you get serious about ‘loving it here’, we have all the professionals you need to find your new home address. In the meantime, we’re happy to have you stay at our Inns, BnBs and rentals. The area offers ‘foodies’ good choices all day and some of the best chefs ruling the restaurant kitchens all evening. You might also be impressed with the array of breweries, wineries and spirit distilleries. Wherever there’s food and drink, you’ll find a side of music. In Bethel and the surrounding area, Music is everywhere... If we sound optimistic, we are. Bethel has it all and we are willing to share. We hope you take the offer. The BBA welcomes you for a weekend, a season, or a lifetime.

Bethel History
T
own of Bethel, N.Y. measures 93.5 square miles, including 4.6 miles of water and 147 miles of road and is located on the watershed between the Mongaup and Delaware Rivers. The last recorded population was 4255 in 2010. Local government is lead by the Supervisor and a four person Town Board. The first inhabitants in the territory were the Leni-Lenape Indians. 1795 records state that the Pintler brothers, were the first settlers. Bethel separated from the Town of Lumberland and was incorporated in 1809. The earliest settlements were Fraser, Briscoe, North White Lake, Bushville and Stephensville. The current land map consists of Bethel, White Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, and parts of Mongaup Valley and Swan Lake. Hunting, tanning, and fishing were the original industries and naturally, agriculture followed due to the rich land, so suited to farming. Bethel is still considered an Agriculture community today. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that the tourist industry developed. Inns and summer camps lead the way in the ‘Golden Age’ for area hotels, namely Grossinger’s and the Concord, second home

development, and the hospitality industry. The ‘Mighty M’ Racetrack opened in 1958 and SC International Airport was built in the ‘60s. The Woodstock Festival, our claim to fame, put Bethel on the map in 1969. The number of resorts diminished in the next few decades, yet our second homes and seasonal visitors kept the Catskill area alive. To the delight of many, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and Museum opened in our backyard in 2006. The exclusive Monticello Motor Club arrived in ‘08. Most recently, Resort World Catskills, the long awaited casino, and The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Water Park made Sullivan County their home. Last year, for the Woodstock 50th Anniversary, the county-wide Dove Trail was promoted, while Bethel extended the trend with The Heritage Trail, depicting Woodstock highlights. Today, our town promotes business, the growing second home and tourist industry and a green, sustainable lifestyle. Bethel is idyllic. We offer open space, access to various bodies of water, fresh air and will always welcome visitors to a relaxed, country life.

his business here in Sullivan County was a natural fit. “I have always loved Sullivan County; my family had businesses in the Sullivan County Catskills for many years and I really enjoy the area and the people. I could not CONTRIBUTED PHOTO imagine living anywhere else”, says Dr. D’Abbraccio. “Aside from calling this my home, I love all that we have to offer here in the awesome Sullivan County Catskills. There is so much to do and it is such a beautiful place to call home all year around. Sullivan County is truly unique and exceptional! I am proud and happy to have my practice here and to be an active member of the local communities.”

FARMSTORE offering high quality products. Open Weekends by appointment or walk ins.
Enjoy a Great Day in the Town of Bethel lack Oak Buildings is a newcomer to Bethel. The business opened in the summer of 2019, just before the 50th Woodstock Anniversary. It is named after a big beautiful Black Oak tree, one of the oldest in New York, on the corner of Plank Road and Route 17B. They sell custom quality built Old Hickory buildings, cabanas, and animal shelters. With a variety of options to choose from, they use traditional construction techniques handed down from Amish communities. The sheds are reasonably priced, engineer-certified, and come with a 5 year warranty. They can be purchased outright or with a rent-to-own option and sales can be done from their website at BlackOakBuildings.com. Consumers can enjoy a self-guided tour at their convenience at the display lot which is open from dawn to dusk. Free delivery is offered within 30 miles. “The Town of Bethel is where I grew up. After graduating Monticello High School I went off to college for many years but always knew I would return home to start my family and business”, stated Dr. Noeth. It's a terrific family business with Jeff, Jamie and their son, Jack, all having a part in it. Black Oak Buildings is located next to Dr. Noeth’s long time successful wellness center. After wanting to purchase a shed for her family she realized what a great location it would be to sell sheds, and hence the idea became a reality. Check them out!

It's evident that this friendly duo love what they do, love their shop and love the Sullivan Catskills “We enjoy the vibe of Bethel.
