Professional Women of Sullivan County honor Woman of the Year and Distinguished Community Service recipients STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHARON MACGREGOR
Professional Women of Sullivan County, Inc. (PWSC), a Chapter of New York State Women, Inc. held their 37th annual dinner on October 30, recognizing Woman of the Year – Joanne Lionetti Gerow and Distinguished Community Service Award Winner – Barbi Newmann Marty. PWSC President Amy Colon said, “Today’s event is held for two purposes; to recognize our honorees, but also it is the PWSC’s primary fundraiser. With the money raised, we offer annual scholarships for local high school students as well as women returning to education.” Barbi Neumann Marty is not only the Senior Unity Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Sullivan and Orange Counties, but also a member of the Liberty Rotary Club, an AYSO soccer
coach, Little League coach, and a member of the Eagle Scout Board of Review, Friend in Need, Federation for the Homeless, Village of Monticello Holiday Committee, Monticello Chamber of Commerce Events Committee and a judge for 4H presentations through Cornell Cooperative Extension. She is married to Dan Marty and is mother to Dianna and Sofia. Denise Frangipane, 2012 PWSC Woman of the Year, shared a story regarding Neumann Marty teaching Frangipane’s young son about good people who are present in bad situations, much like those Mister Rogers credited his mother for pointing out in times of crisis. Christopher Henry of the Boys & Girls Club, as well as NYPD Agency Attorney listed the many activities he has known Neumann Marty to participate in or lead while never seeking credit. While accepting her award, Neumann

Marty offered many thanks to those who support her and especially called out her husband, “for being the glue that keeps us together. I am so grateful. He never makes me choose and always supports me.” Woman of the Year, Joanne Lionetti Gerow, has a long list of accomplishments and associations related to her extensive animal rescue efforts, at times in severe conditions which includes being 70 feet in the air in a bucket truck to save a cat, numerous rescues conducted in adverse weather and many feet of snow to recover a lost dog, and finding homes for over 40 dogs and cats following the displacement of animals on the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. A prior Board Member and vice president of the Sullivan Co. SPCA, a Cruelty Investigator, Constable and Dog Control Office for the Town of Liberty and Animal Control Officer for the Town of Fallsburg, she continues to work toward increasing training, knowledge and opportunities to raise awareness regarding the treatment of animals. She is currently assessing the feasibility of a new shelter in Liberty. Pat Valusek of the New York Humane Association also gave Gerow an Award of Excellence for the “countless animals who had an improved quality of life,” as a result of her work. Debbie Morelli-Speer began the pres-
entation, by sharing one of Gerow’s own quotes, “Joanne ‘is saving lives four feet at a time.’” Town of Liberty Supervisor, Charlie Barbuti pointed out that Gerow is not only the Dog Control Officer for the Town, but also a Peace Officer and the Founder and President of Catskill Animal Rescue. Name: Victoria Eddings - I go by Vicky Age: Recently turned 40 Place of employment: Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville. Current title and duties: Director of Strategic Initiatives. I oversee new projects, program innovation, implementation of program related grants, training plans for the staff, partnerships and guest relationship management. I directly supervise the Equestrian Program Director and the Community Programs Director – these departments run all equestrian activities both summer and yearround, our summer day camps, our after school program at Tri-Valley Elementary School, and all community outreach. I oversee program areas at Frost Valley such as our
teaching kitchen, garden and greenhouse, and specialty programs such as woodshop, pottery and screen printing. My job is very diverse. Years of experience: I am in my 9th year here with the YMCA. Previously I worked for 9 years at a YMCA camp in southwest Ohio. Favorite part of your job: I have two “favorite parts” of what I do. The guest interactions are amazing. People visit Frost Valley from all over. I have met so many diverse and interesting people. To hear the stories of how deeply people are connected to Frost Valley, the meaning that our camp and conference center has to people and the life changing experiences – its truly overwhelming in a good way. As a non-profit, I get to feel really good about the work we do in people’s lives. If you take five minutes to talk with any of the guests you

quickly become amazed at the impact. I love to work with the staff. The team of people I direct are wonderful individuals – genuine and hard working. Most challenging part of your job: Communication to all the moving pieces. On any given day we can have eight schools, or over 600 guests on a weekend, between staff and campers serve 1200 meals, and this all happens on over 5000 acres. There are logistics that have to happen to make it go smoothly – it can sometimes be difficult to get the message out to everyone that needs to know. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: One of my favorite on the job moments has been working with our New Jersey Healthy Family Weekend program to bring families to Frost Valley for a healthy living retreat where they learn to cook healthy meals in our teaching kitchen, they learn the principles of growing fresh fruits and vegetables in our garden and then how to replicate that in an urban setting. The goal is to have them work together as a family to change some of their unhealthy habits and kick start a better path. At the pilot weekend this
past November, I noticed one woman in particular was looking around with a strange look on her face. I started to talk with her and asked her if she was excited to be at Frost Valley for the weekend, and if it was her first time to the Catskills. She started to tear up and she looked at me and said “I am 30 years old and I have never left the city of Newark. You have no idea what it means to me and my family to be here.” I was blown away ... I will always remember her. Education: I have a BS in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio. Professional certification: I hold Organizational Leader status from YMCA of the USA. I am an accredited Site Visitor for the American Camping Association. I am a Level 4 riding instructor through the Certified Horsemanship Association as well as an Assistant Clinic Instructor. Favorite movie: For years my favorite movie was “The Man From Snowy River.” Its an obscure movie about an Australian man who works with horses. More recently I will admit I do love the movie The Notebook. Favorite actor/actress: Helen Mirren. She’s talented and can be
hysterically funny. How do you spend your spare time: With my family – with three children, there is always an activity happening. I enjoy hiking to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Catskills. I am a horse lover and look for the times when I can ride. Favorite vacation spot: So far of all of the places I have been to, I have most enjoyed Belize. Family: I am recently married to Bob Eddings. He has two children – Jack who is 16 and Juliette who is 14, and I have a little boy named Kellan who is five.

Civic or volunteer affiliations: I have helped at the Grahamsville Library with the Giant Pumpkin Party, I volunteered for a while at New Hope as an aide in the horseback riding program, I have volunteered at the holiday dinner that Aroma Thyme does for families in need on Christmas Day. 5Ks. I really like to stay active. Usually those are things that I do with family and friends. Favorite vacation spot: I would have to say my favorite vacation spot is Vieques, Puerto Rico. I have family out there. So one, I get to visit with my mother’s side of the family and two, it’s absolutely gorgeous there. The water is pristine and the beaches don’t get a lot of tourist traffic. They were untouched until about 20 years ago because it was a Navy training base. And you can see a little bit of everything. There are beautiful big homes next to a small demolished like home with chickens and wild horses running. It’s still very rural. I really love it there. Family: My immediate family is my husband Gary, we just celebrated our 23rd anniversary, and my two sons Trever and Evan. And our cat, Jeter. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I am a member of the Bilingual Advisory Committee for Sullivan Renaissance as well as a member of the Sullivan County Workforce Development Board. Dream job: I’d have to say that I really love what I do in this organization. I feel HR (Human Resource) can really make a difference and that’s what I aim to do here. So I guess my dream job is wherever I can make a difference.

Patricia Lamb STORY AND PHOTO BY JOSEPH ABRAHAM
Name: Patricia Lamb Age: 57 Place of employment: New Hope Community Inc. Current title and duties: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). I kind of do a little bit of everything. My primary role is the liaison with a consulting physiatrist. I do a lot of review of medical charts for regulatory compliance and I assist with policy and procedure and lots of other things. There are so many functions I do in a day, I don’t think about it, I just do it.” Years of experience: Thirty and half years, all at New Hope Community Inc. Right now I am an LPN, but through my tenure here I’ve been a Case Manager, a Program Coordinator, a Program Coordinator Director, Director of Residential Services and the Director of Health Services. I started as an LPN and I am
going to retire as one. Favorite Part of the Job: The folks and the unpaid rewards from daily interactions with the people we serve. Most challenging part of the job: I have a very busy office. Lots of people utilize me for historical perspective and information. I handle multiple tasks daily and process a lot of paperwork that requires a lot of detail and accuracy. The window of time between October 15 and December 5, with the regular duty, adding on Medicare D open enrollment for all the people we provide support for. Favorite on the job moment/ memory: Many years ago our houses were first built, and one particular lady did not want to move from the main building to the house. Her comments were ‘I’m not moving, I’m not leaving New Hope.’ We get all of her stuff together and she moved into the first house that opened here on campus. We didn’t even get

through the door and her statement was, ‘I’m never going back to New Hope.’ There are so many memories it makes me smile. I have developed a lot of friends and relationships. I’ve taken many out fishing. We would do the whole course, I’d take the fish home, we’d clean them and eat them. Before I took them back, one particular lady was allowed to get married. Her and her husband chose my husband to marry them, he was a pastor. Education: Tri-Valley Central School before attending SUNY Delhi. I went for nursing and to be an LPN. Professional certifications: I’m a Nurse. I’ve taken several courses through the OPWDD. I have completed a division of quality assurance investigative training. I have done a lot of regular teaching and education courses online. I am thinking about going back to school. But I never wanted to be an RN because I didn’t want paperwork. My mother always says, ‘What is your job right now?’ And a majority of it is paperwork. Favorite movies: Braveheart, Gladiator and War Room. They have a deep meaning. There is a thread there for life to kind of look back at. Favorite actor and/or actress: Sam Elliot and Mel Gibson. How do you spend your spare
time: With family, church family and friends. I do geocaching, fishing, hunting, knitting, I like to play Pinochle, go to church functions, but I would say all those things not necessarily in that order. Favorite vacation spot: Alaska Family: I am widowed. My husband William [Lamb] passed away in January. I have a son and a daughterin-law, William and Andreya Lamb. I have two beautiful grandchildren, Laryana and Daniel. I have a wonderful mom, Agnes Kortright. I have two sisters and an awesome brother, Butch and a sister-in-law, Donna. I don’t know what I would have done without them [Butch and Donna] over the last several months. Civic or volunteer affiliations: I am an active member of the Community Christian Fellowship Church in the Manor, which was started by my late husband. I volunteer every Fall for the Sullivan County Long Beards at their NWTS Fall JAKES event. I help kids make Bluebird houses. We do between 100-200 bird houses every year. I spent three years as a trustee/secretary of the Neversink/ Fallsburg Cemetery Association. In the past, I had spent 15-16 years with the Neversink Volunteer Ambulance. Dream job: To be a fishing guide in Alaska.
Christine Bunce STORY AND PHOTO BY AUTUMN SCHANIL
Name: Christine Bunce Age: 27 Place of employment: Bethel Woods Center for the Arts Current title and duties: Education and Outreach Manager. Duties: Develop, implement and evaluate all mission-based programming serving all audience demographics. In addition, develop and maintain community relationships and partnerships to truly be a resource for and by the community to best fulfill the mission of Bethel Woods and Sullivan County. Years of experience: At Bethel Woods, almost three. In education, seven years. Favorite part of your job: Being able to make people feel good, laugh and be in the present moment whether it is through an artistic challenge, a life event, or simple conversation. Through our programming I am able to connect with many diverse audiences, some for long periods of time, most short, but each opportunity to be with the community enables me to bring awareness and education of other perspectives, experiences and cultures. This part of my job allows for me to promote equality, through a humanistic approach. I have had many conversations with guests, teens and other participants about how others may feel differently about a topic, look at an image or artwork differently, or their culture drastically different from your own, but that all these varying perspectives are authentic and valid for that person, even if you do not agree with it. Understanding through listening, experience and communication is my favorite thing to teach and it is a daily occurrence in my position. Most challenging part of your job: Breaking the public perception that Bethel Woods is just a concert venue, or if they do know artistic or educational programming happens, they think it is arts and crafts or babysitting. We offer high caliber programming that is truly accessible to our community. Being a Bethel resident

most of my life, I wish I had this access growing up. The programs I support are tailored in partnerships with institutions, like the New School Mannes School of Music and College of Performing Arts, Museum Association of New York, entities of the community such as NACL Theater, Downtown Barn in Liberty, and nationally acclaimed artists such as Story Pirates, Darrah Carr Dance Troupe, and many more, to provide unique, world class opportunities to Sullivan County. Favorite on-the-job moment, customer or memory: I honestly have several from each of the ten programs I support. The moment that always hits my core is when a teen or child, can look back and positively reflect their journey in the program and communicate how it altered their perspective or skill set. My most proud public moment where this reflection happens is every May at the culminating PI: Photography Exhibition. I watch 20 diverse teens, navigate all the complexities of being a teen, to stand up in front of peers, parents and strangers, and definitively state who they are, what they care about and how they are going to move forward in life or their art. Sometimes the teens want to change the world, to fight the intolerance of their peers at school or just take a beautiful image. They make me very proud each and every day. Education: Master’s in Humanistic Multicultural Education from SUNY New Paltz. Dual Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Art Photography and Communication and Rhetorical Studies. Graduate of Monticello High School. Favorite movie: I'm not too big into movies, something about my attention span maybe! Favorite actor/and or actress: I've always appreciated Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. How do you spend your spare time: Hiking or being active. I teach yoga at YogAsh Yoga Studio in Monticello and LES MILLS Bodypump at Fitness Factory and might be addicted to fitness certifications! I've had about 8 different certifications at one time, but yoga and muscle training seems to be

the ones that have stuck with me. Favorite recreational spot: The Katrina Falls Trail in the Neversink Unique Area in Rock Hill, sitting on the bank of the Neversink Gorge makes you appreciate the power of water, the intense quiet of the woods and the universe going to play on whether you do something about yourself or not. Family: Fiance Louie Miraglia Jr., newly adopted dog, Duke.
Civic or volunteer affiliations: Alzheimer’s Association, Operations Advisor for Kappa Alpha Theta – Chi Chapter, Leadership Sullivan Class of 2017, and any 5K in the area! Dream job: To keep building off my current position so I can continue my educational leadership work and more throughly incorporate the benefits of physical, mental, emotional and social well being to individuals in the community.

Favorite on-the-job moment: Working here since 1989, I have a plethora of favorite moments, customers and memories on the job. Many years ago, I had an elderly man who was a regular visitor. He was a war veteran and very proud of his service and this country. He loved talking to me and sharing stories about his life. This gentleman has since passed, but I remember clearly his perfectly groomed snow-white hair and patriotic suspenders and ties. He loved to garden and would regularly bring me goodies like zucchini and tomatoes. He would always come back to visit me a couple of days later, because he knew I would bake for him breads and quiche, among other things. One day he was being incredibly playful and had on a special American Flag tie. He squeezed the middle of the tie, and all of a sudden “God Bless America” started to play, and he tried to act like he had no idea what was happening. He was so adorable. I am incredibly

blessed to have a job where I am able to interact with folks in this way. I am richer and a better person for opportunities like these. Professional certifications: I hold many NYS Town Clerk’s Association Training & Education Certificates, various Small Business Training
Certificates, NYS Managing Electronic Records Certificates, Customer Service Certificates and even an Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace “Ingredients for Leadership Effectiveness Certificate”! I enjoy any opportunity I am given to learn ways to better myself and gain knowledge so I can better serve in my capacity as Town Clerk. Favorite movie: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” I have always had a real connection with the story of Charlie as I too grew up in the absence of luxury. There is the quote at the end of the film where Charlie discovers that a kind heart is a far finer possession than possessions themselves. Willy Wonka tells Charlie not to forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted. “What happened?” Charlie asks. Willy Wonka replies, “He lived happily ever after.” I relate and remember this every single day, both in my public and private life. I believe if my heart is true and I work hard and do the best that I can that everything else in life will follow in the way it is supposed to. Addendum: When I asked her husband David of 46 years if he wanted to say something about his wife's accomplishments these were his words, “My wife and I have done all of our work by hand up until 20 years ago. At that point we brought a computer. She still verifies all the work by hand and then enters it into the system. She is well organized meticulous but I am not. We are the perfect set of unmatched people.” He also said that in 46 years he has never heard a harsh word to anyone but she does not hold back when it's just the two of them. This is the perfect match made in accounting heaven.

Favorite on the job memory: One of my most meaningful experiences as a pastor reflected back to my former career, where I developed the RISE program. One of my clients that I supported through the criminal justice system as a victim, was assaulted by a clergy person, so it had layers of complications for me. That was more than 20-25 years ago. This summer they came to this area to visit someone and made the effort of coming to one of my worship services to say hello and tell me that life was going very well. It was one of those moments for a lifetime. Education: Certification from Wesley Theological Seminary;
